Eighth Day - " The souls who are detained in purgatory" “Today bring to Me the Souls who are in the prison of Purgatory, and immerse them in the abyss of My mercy. Let the torrents of My Blood cool down their scorching flames. All these souls are greatly loved by Me. They are making retribution to My justice. It is in your power to bring them relief. Draw all the indulgences from the treasury of My Church and offer them on their behalf. Oh, if you only knew the torments they suffer, you would continually offer for them the alms of the spirit and pay off their debt to My justice.” Most Merciful Jesus, You Yourself have said that You desire mercy; so I bring into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart the souls in Purgatory, souls who are very dear to You, and yet, who must make retribution to Your justice. May the streams of Blood and Water which gushed forth from Your Heart put out the flames of Purgatory, that there, too, the power of Your mercy may be celebrated. Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon the souls suffering in Purgatory, who are enfolded in the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. I beg You, by the sorrowful Passion of Jesus Your Son, and by all the bitterness with which His most sacred Soul was flooded: Manifest Your mercy to the souls who are under Your just scrutiny. Look upon them in no other way but only through the Wounds of Jesus, Your dearly beloved Son; for we firmly believe that there is no limit to Your goodness and compassion. Amen.

Night and day, they continually sing the Glorious Praises of the True Lord; they are adorned with the Word of the Guru's Shabad. || 1 || O my Lord and Master, I am Your child; I seek Your Sanctuary. You are the One and Only Lord, the Truest of the True; You Yourself are the Destroyer of ego. || Pause || Those who remain wakeful obtain God; through the Word of the Shabad, they conquer their ego. Immersed in family life, the Lord's humble servant ever remains detached; he reflects upon the essence of spiritual wisdom. Serving the True Guru, he finds eternal peace, and he keeps the Lord enshrined in his heart. || 2 || This mind wanders in the ten directions; it is consumed by the love of duality. The foolish self-willed manmukh does not remember the Lord's Name; he wastes away his life in vain. But when he meets the True Guru, then he obtains the Name; he sheds egotism and emotional attachment. || 3 || The Lord's humble servants are True — they practice Truth, and reflect upon the Word of the Guru's Shabad. Pray this Lazaroo in overcoming faith: “Antipas, my faithful witness, who was put to death…” (Revelation 2:13) Oh, Jesus. My first thought is, “Oh, no! Poor Antipas!” But then I realize his death took him straight to heaven! I can feel sorry for his friends and loved ones but not for him. My second thought is, “Oh, no! WHY Antipas?” I mean, You Yourself said he was your “faithful witness.” But then I envision the heavenly welcome he received as Your faithful martyr. Wow. Born of a priestly family near Moscow in 1782, he entered seminary at a young age and soon distinguished himself for his piety and his scholarship of ancient languages. He was tonsured a monk, but was made a professor at the seminary in Moscow, where his expositions of the Faith, spoken and written, caused him to be regarded as a Father of the Church in his own time; many called him "the new Chrysostom." In 1817, at the age of thirty-five, he was consecrated bishop, and in only a few years rose to the rank of Metropolitan of Moscow, the highest office in the Russian Church since Peter the Great abolished the Patriarchate. He remained Metropolitan for the rest of his life. Saint Philaret seemed literally tireless in his labors for the Church: no-one knew when he slept, and his servant, no matter when he came to the Metropolitan's quarters, would always find him working at his desk. He worked to restore moral standards among the clergy, which had fallen into laxity. Whenever he was forced to depose a cleric, he would secretly contribute to the family's needs out of his own resources. Similarly, he used up all of his financial resources in charitable works, always taking care that his donations were kept secret. He funded the building of a large hospice for orphans and children of poor clergy families. St Philaret gave his full support to the fifty-year project of translating the Bible into Russian, and translated several Old Testament books himself, though the project was opposed by the Tsar and by some powerful groups in the Church. He supported the work of the fathers of Optina Monastery to publish translations of the Fathers of the Church; these translations, when they appeared, contributed to a great spiritual awakening in Russia. He reposed in peace in 1867 at the age of eighty-five. The well-loved "Morning Prayer of Philaret of Moscow" which begins "Lord, grant me to greet the coming day in peace..." was brought into Orthodox piety by St Philaret but seems originally to have been written by Francois Fenelon, the French Quietist writer. The prayer also came to be used by the Optina Elders and is sometimes referred to as the "Morning Prayer of the Optina Elders." The prayer appears in several similar versions. O Lord, grant me to greet the coming day in peace. Help me in all things to rely upon Your holy will. In every hour of the day reveal Your will to me. Bless my dealings with all who surround me. Teach me to treat all that comes to me throughout the day with peace of soul, and with the firm conviction that Your will governs all. In all my deeds and words guide my thoughts and feelings. In unforseen events let me not forget that all are sent by You. Teach me to act firmly and wisely, without embittering or embarrassing others. Give me strength to bear the fatigue of this coming day with all that it will bring. Direct my will, teach me to pray, pray You Yourself in me. Amen.

Psalm 38-40 New King James Version (NKJV) Prayer in Time of Chastening A Psalm of David. To bring to remembrance. 38 O Lord, do not rebuke me in Your wrath,Nor chasten me in Your hot displeasure!2 For Your arrows pierce me deeply,And Your hand presses me down. 3 There is no soundness in my fleshBecause of Your anger,Nor any health in my bonesBecause of my sin.4 For my iniquities have gone over my head;Like a heavy burden they are too heavy for me.5 My wounds are foul and festeringBecause of my foolishness. 6 I am [a]troubled, I am bowed down greatly;I go mourning all the day long.7 For my loins are full of inflammation,And there is no soundness in my flesh.8 I am feeble and severely broken;I groan because of the turmoil of my heart. 9 Lord, all my desire is before You;And my sighing is not hidden from You.10 My heart pants, my strength fails me;As for the light of my eyes, it also has gone from me. 11 My loved ones and my friends stand aloof from my plague,And my relatives stand afar off.12 Those also who seek my life lay snares for me;Those who seek my hurt speak of destruction,And plan deception all the day long. 13 But I, like a deaf man, do not hear; And I am like a mute who does not open his mouth.14 Thus I am like a man who does not hear,And in whose mouth is no response. 15 For [b]in You, O Lord, I hope; You will [c]hear, O Lord my God.16 For I said, “Hear me, lest they rejoice over me,Lest, when my foot slips, they exalt themselves against me.” 17 For I am ready to fall,And my sorrow is continually before me.18 For I will declare my iniquity;I will be in [d]anguish over my sin.19 But my enemies are vigorous, and they are strong; And those who hate me wrongfully have multiplied.20 Those also who render evil for good,They are my adversaries, because I follow what is good. 21 Do not forsake me, O Lord;O my God, be not far from me!22 Make haste to help me,O Lord, my salvation! Prayer for Wisdom and Forgiveness To the Chief Musician. To Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. 39 I said, “I will guard my ways,Lest I sin with my tongue;I will restrain my mouth with a muzzle,While the wicked are before me.”2 I was mute with silence,I held my peace even from good; And my sorrow was stirred up.3 My heart was hot within me;While I was [e]musing, the fire burned. Then I spoke with my tongue: 4 “Lord, make me to know my end,And what is the measure of my days,That I may know how frail I am.5 Indeed, You have made my days as handbreadths,And my age is as nothing before You;Certainly every man at his best state is but vapor. Selah6 Surely every man walks about like a shadow;Surely they [f]busy themselves in vain;He heaps up riches,And does not know who will gather them. 7 “And now, Lord, what do I wait for?My hope is in You.8 Deliver me from all my transgressions;Do not make me the reproach of the foolish.9 I was mute, I did not open my mouth,Because it was You who did it.10 Remove Your plague from me;I am consumed by the blow of Your hand.11 When with rebukes You correct man for iniquity,You make his beauty melt away like a moth;Surely every man is vapor. Selah 12 “Hear my prayer, O Lord,And give ear to my cry;Do not be silent at my tears; For I am a stranger with You,A sojourner, as all my fathers were.13 Remove Your gaze from me, that I may regain strength,Before I go away and am no more.” Faith Persevering in Trial To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. 40 I waited patiently for the Lord; And He inclined to me,And heard my cry.2 He also brought me up out of a horrible pit,Out of the miry clay,And set my feet upon a rock,And established my steps.3 He has put a new song in my mouth—Praise to our God;Many will see it and fear,And will trust in the Lord. 4 Blessed is that man who makes the Lord his trust,And does not respect the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.5 Many, O Lord my God, are Your wonderful worksWhich You have done; And Your thoughts toward usCannot be recounted to You in order; If I would declare and speak of them,They are more than can be numbered. 6 Sacrifice and offering You did not desire; My ears You have opened.Burnt offering and sin offering You did not require.7 Then I said, “Behold, I come;In the scroll of the book it is written of me.8 I delight to do Your will, O my God,And Your law is within my heart.” 9 I have proclaimed the good news of righteousnessIn the great assembly;Indeed, I do not restrain my lips,O Lord, You Yourself know.10 I have not hidden Your righteousness within my heart;I have declared Your faithfulness and Your salvation;I have not concealed Your lovingkindness and Your truthFrom the great assembly. 11 Do not withhold Your tender mercies from me, O Lord;Let Your lovingkindness and Your truth continually preserve me.12 For innumerable evils have surrounded me;My iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to look up;They are more than the hairs of my head; Therefore my heart fails me. 13 Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me;O Lord, make haste to help me!14 Let them be ashamed and brought to mutual confusionWho seek to destroy my [g]life;Let them be driven backward and brought to dishonorWho wish me evil.15 Let them be confounded because of their shame,Who say to me, “Aha, aha!” 16 Let all those who seek You rejoice and be glad in You;Let such as love Your salvation say continually,“The Lord be magnified!”17 But I am poor and needy;Yet the Lord thinks upon me.You are my help and my deliverer;Do not delay, O my God.

In part one (00:00 - 25:35), Jon reviews the image of the ideal state of humanity and postulates it as a garden mountain fortress. He asks Tim why this is so different from a more familiar one of a heaven full of clouds and angels. Tim says that it’s important not to mistake the image of a metaphor for the reality of what the image points to. Tim also quotes TS Eliot saying that poetry is a “raid on the inarticulate.” In other words, poetry is meant to describe things that can’t be described in normal, factual use of language. Tim begins to outline the use of the metaphor of chaotic water in the Bible. Chaotic water is the first image given in the Bible. It’s meant to convey a state of un-creation, a state that is uninhabitable and unwelcoming of life. Tim begins to contrast the dark chaotic water that is present at the start of Genesis with the river of life that flows through Eden and is created later in the creation story. In part two (25:35 - 40:25), Tim explains that chaotic waters often become personified as evil. For example, in the story of the Exodus, Pharoah and his army is made equivalent to the chaotic waters in Exodus 15. This story runs in parallel with Psalm 18. "O Lord God of hosts, who is like You, O mighty Lord? Your faithfulness also surrounds You. You rule the swelling of the sea; When its waves rise, You still them. You Yourself crushed Rahab like one who is slain; You scattered Your enemies with Your mighty arm." (Rahab is a Hebrew word for Egypt). In part three (40:25 - 52:25), Tim outlines Isaiah 17:12-14. 12 Woe to the many nations that rage— they rage like the raging sea! Woe to the peoples who roar— they roar like the roaring of great waters! 13 Although the peoples roar like the roar of surging waters, when he rebukes them they flee far away, driven before the wind like chaff on the hills, like tumbleweed before a gale. 14 In the evening, sudden terror! Before the morning, they are gone! This is the portion of those who loot us, the lot of those who plunder us. The metaphor of chaotic waters further expands to equate the warring nations with chaotic waters. Then Tim begins to outline the new creation prophecies and their relation to the chaotic water metaphor. Joel 4:18: 18 And in that day The mountains will drip with sweet wine, And the hills will flow with milk, And all the brooks of Judah will flow with water; And a spring will go out from the house of the Lord To water the valley of Shittim. Zechariah 14:6-9: 6 On that day there will be neither sunlight nor cold, frosty darkness. 7 It will be a unique day, known only to the Lord with no distinction between day and night. When evening comes, there will be light. 8 On that day living water will flow out from Jerusalem, half of it east to the Dead Sea and half of it west to the Mediterranean Sea, in summer and in winter. 9 The Lord will be king over the whole earth. On that day there will be one Lord, and his name the only name. Isaiah 2:1-4: 2 Now it will come about that In the last days The mountain of the house of the Lord Will be established as the chief of the mountains, And will be raised above the hills; And all the nations will stream [lit. “river”] to it…. 3 And they will hammer their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not lift up sword against nation, And never again will they learn war. He says that new creation means the restoration of the cosmic mountain and the reunification of the waters. In part four (52:25 - 57:35), the guys try to crystalize their thought process. Danger and death in the Bible are described as chaotic waters and love, peace and security are described as a river of life. Tim says these images are fundamental to understanding the Bible, especially the prophets. In part five (57:35 - end), the guys recap their conversation on metaphor and talk briefly about creating the video on metaphors in the Bible. Tim briefly touches on the story of Jesus walking on the water. Why is this story in all the gospels? Because in the Jewish tradition, it represents Christ’s command over the chaotic waters that threaten human life and originally appear in Genesis 1. Thank you to all our supporters! Eighth Day: Today bring to Me THE SOULS WHO ARE DETAINED IN PURGATORY, and immerse them in the abyss of My mercy. Most Merciful Jesus, You Yourself have said that You desire mercy; so I bring into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart the souls in Purgatory, souls who are very dear to You, and yet, who must make retribution to Your justice. Amen.
