With over 18 years of nursing experience, she founded Melanated Health Secrets, a blog dedicated to empowering individuals, especially fibroid sufferers, to manage their conditions naturally by balancing hormones and resetting their nervous systems. She will graduate in a few weeks with a Doctorate of Nursing Practice in Family Practice at Pacific Lutheran University, where she focuses on cultural aspects of care. Her innovative approach and dedication to holistic health have earned her features in several prestigious publications, including Slate, Nurse Journal, and Thrive Global, and appearances on platforms like the Black Women Rising podcast. Rosa's passion for health advocacy shines through her work with Melanated Health Secrets, where she combines her extensive nursing background with a deep understanding of holistic wellness to guide individuals toward improved health literacy and self-care practices. As a Tacoma native, Rosa's journey is also deeply personal, as are her fibroid and thyroid experiences. A mother to a vibrant blended family and a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., her life is a testament to her belief in community, advocacy, and the transformative power of culturally competent care. Rosa Crumpton's vision for the future of healthcare is one where everyone has access to information and treatments that honor their whole selves, bridging gaps in health equity and promoting wellness across communities. I know it's a struggle. It can take a couple of interviews to try to find the right provider. Now, if you don't have a good relationship with your provider, shop around. We are fortunate to be in that kind of time that we're able to do that. But it's really important for you to have somebody that knows your health when you are somewhat healthy. Because if you do have something happen and you go to the emergency room or the urgent care. They don't have your whole record, they don't know all the stuff that's going on with you. That's not where you get treated, especially with chronic health issues. My second thing is if you are a veteran and you have not signed up for your veterans benefits, please do that. You can file online, you could call the number, just Google like VA benefits or whatever. Fairly straight forward process, but it does take time. So go ahead and get that started today.

The dog we have shared our homes with for many years, becomes the blood in our veins and the beat of our hearts. What do we watch out for though, how can we tell our dogs are healthy and happy? What can we do to keep them active and contented? You will learn: How dogs made it so easily into our homes and heartsWhy nutrition is so important to health. How to monitor your dog's health and why to keep records.Mental stimulation games and why we should play them. How to check your dog's vital signs at home. How to manage aches and pains, when medication may be needed and how supplements and therapies can help. Signs of common age related illness. How to manage and monitor your dog's life quality. Hey Everyone! The subject of today's podcast is easy- intellectual wellness, or what we need to do to keep our minds sharp, balanced, and always learning something new. The concept is easy, but sometimes getting started isn't, and I wanted to talk about, from the perspective of a teacher of a topic that nurtures intellectual wellness, how adult learning of a hobby really is beneficial. I don't just talk about music in this episode, but how we can start with what you "always wanted to learn" and go from there. It's so good for you, why are you waiting? Don't put it off to the side any longer because life keeps going on. :) Want to learn more about the 8 facets of wellness? Here is the link for the Wellness Guide for Teachers! Click HERE to get it for free! In the meantime... My 12-Week Signature Program is the program that changes and works with everything. How you eat and how you perceive eating everyday, the ways you become more active in the ways that are best for you, and how you are driven to stick to a foolproof plan will show you the results that you have been dreaming about. You'll lose the belly fat, you'll gain strength, mobility, energy and a more balanced and stress-free lifestyle. Sounds to good to be true? Probably because you've seen all of these magic programs and pills promise the same thing. Hey Everyone! Let's welcome PAFE-Cast's First Guest! I decided to keep things (really) close to home for the first one and decided to interview my husband, Scott. Today we discuss the issue of what spouses think when wives decide to go with a healthy diet, even if they don't want to. I figured he would be great at this, especially since he works as a chef and can cook literally anything. So with that, let's dive into how we make this work! A personal trainer specializing in serving pregnant women, Dawn Weyand decided to share her expertise with a wider audience through her book "Natal Health: Pregnancy Fitness and Wellness Guide" in 2013. At that point, life took a turn. While completing a law degree, Dawn's interest in pregnant women took her to the American prisons where she uncovered some questionable practices. The result is a documentary "Pregnant Prisoner." The subject has become her calling and she is actively fundraising to improve women's lives in the prison environment. I appeared in an advertisement for NDSS. "Many NDSS researchers contributed to the map of chromosome 21, which was the first to be mapped as part of the Human Genome Project due to the relatively low number of genes on the chromosome. NDSS created Changing Lives: Down Syndrome and the Health Care Professional, which aimed to educate physicians, nurses, genetic counselors and other health care professionals on the clinical and developmental needs of people with Down syndrome. NDSS launched Everyone Counts: Teaching Acceptance and Inclusion, a curriculum for grades K-6 that encourages positive relationships between students with and without disabilities. In 2008, NDSS spearheaded the effort to help pass the Prenatally and Postnatally Diagnosed Conditions Awareness Act (Kennedy-Brownback legislation; Public Law 110-374). The law seeks to ensure that pregnant women receiving a positive prenatal test result and parents receiving a postnatal diagnosis will receive up-to-date, scientific information about life expectancy, clinical course, intellectual and functional development, and prenatal and postnatal treatment options. NDSS is carrying out the spirit and intent of this law by helping to facilitate the passage of Down syndrome information bills at the state level. In May 2008, the Congressional Down Syndrome Caucus (CDSC) was formed under the leadership of Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA). The purpose of the CDSC is to educate members of Congress and their staff about Down syndrome. NDSS works the CDSC to support legislative activities that would improve Down syndrome research, education and treatment and promote public policies that would enhance the quality of life for those with Down syndrome. In 2015, the CDSC expanded to a bipartisan, bicameral Congressional Task Force on Down Syndrome. NDSS unveiled its public awareness campaign, My Great Story, which honors and celebrates people with Down syndrome by showcasing stories written by and about them in a unique online storybook. Through a generous grant from the Riggio Family in 2005, NDSS provided three-year grants to two colleges in New Jersey to develop model postsecondary programs for students with intellectual disabilities. Over time, NDSS has provided technical assistance to emerging postsecondary programs across the country. Today there are over 250 two and four-year colleges and universities providing postsecondary education opportunities for students with intellectual disabilities. Hey Everyone! Today's episode focuses on Environmental Wellness. This is the type of wellness that covers whether the places you frequent either nourish or drain you. We will go through an exercise that helps you break this down and decide for yourself about where you physically spend the most time, and what these places do for you. Then we talk about what to do with this information. I would recommend listening with a piece of paper, notebook or journal right to the very end. Going through this is very helpful and can really help to fix things you didn't know were weighing you down. Want to learn more about the 8 facets of wellness? Hey Everyone! I started the series about the eight facets of wellness, which will accompany a free e-book momentarily. Today's segment is on social wellness. It's SO, SO important because I believe that the sources of many people's stress lies with social wellness issues. So many of these issues can be mitigated with knowledge on what social wellness is and what you need to get there. Yes... YOU! You have an unbelievable amount of control in this area. In this episode, I'll guide you through some exercises and reflections of how to start developing social wellness and how to start thinking about it in ways that don't aggrevate any situations. I'm not providing any bookarks because frankly the entire episode is important and a lot of points tend to overlap one another. So take a moment and sit through it, and then listen a second time. It'll be worth it. I promise. EDIT: As stated, I have the link to the finished Wellness Guide! Click HERE to get it for free! In the meantime... Cure for COVID-19 Isolation The Healing Journey: Relationships and Wellness Guide New York— October 11 — Could this be the miracle to the COVID-19 Isolation? Dr. Rosenna Bakari is using her latest book, “The Healing Journey: Relationships and Wellness Guide,” to support mental wellness by creating a challenge. “#HealingChallenge2022” will organize “healing squads” to address the isolation that so many people are feeling during COVID. Healing squads will consist of 4-12 readers from family, workplaces, friendships or organizations that hold each other accountable for engaging with the book all year with the author's guidance. “The easiest way to initiate change is to open ourselves up to new experiences (The Healing Journey).” Positive Impact Participants will begin to normalize healing as personal development by using common language and goals based on the book. Nothing like this has been done before and the potential for change is enormous. “So many people need this type of support” Product Availability Participants, including businesses, can register for the challenge at HealingChallenge2022.com. “The Healing Journey: Relationships and Wellness Guide” can be purchased anywhere books are sold.

#040 - When we think of older adults during COVID, images of older adults living in long-term care communities sheltering in place with hands pressed against windows trying to connect with loved ones circle in our heads. 2020 was a year of incredible hardship and pain for many people and especially for many older adults and their families. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) tells us that since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, older adults have the greatest risk of requiring hospitalization or dying if they’re diagnosed with COVID-19. This has been one of the most heartbreaking fall outs of the pandemic. All of this is true, and yet, its only part of the story when it comes to older adults and COVID. Research over the past year has shown that older adults have been, by and large, psychologically resilient during the pandemic. In this episode, I: Share statistics on the state of mental health of older adults during COVID-19 compared to adults of younger ages. Discuss the important role of resilience in coping with the COVID-19 pandemicExplore 5 resilience strategies identified by researchers as beneficial for use by older adults. #020 - With COVID rates on the rise, and African American and Latinx folks 2-3 times more likely to have COVID than White Americans, I wanted to bring an expert on the podcast today to share a little bit about why there is this health disparity and what we can do to reduce this disparity, protect ourselves, our families, and strengthen our community in the midst of COVID. Before we get started, I want to acknowledge that COVID is lasting longer than many of us anticipated. If you're an older adult, or caring for an older adult during COVID, download the free COVID-19 Wellness Guide for Older Adults. It'll help you weather this storm. Here’s a look inside my interview with Dr. Monique Williams:[05:04] Dr. Williams describes her person-centered approach to practicing medicine in outpatient primary care with older adults.[09:55] For most of us, our life's passion is not realized until after Kindergarten, but this was not the case for Dr. Williams. Dr. Williams' interest in geriatric medicine started very early.[13:33] Unfortunately, there are many health disparities that disproportionately affect African Americans. Dr. Williams discusses some of these disparities and shares what is contributing to these disparities. [22:31] To scientists researching topics in minority communities, Dr. Williams asks important questions, like: "Do clinicians and researchers have a commitment to the community? Are they going to actually engage with the community in a sustained manner? Or do they simply get what they want and then leave?"Listen to Dr. Williams' recommendations for minority research.[24:37] Learn about one community's efforts to systematize COVID response and testing[27:34] Dr. Williams shares her recommendations for older adults surrounding COVID-19.[33:29] Senior care communities have been disproportionately impacted by the Coronavirus pandemic, ranging from high rates of COVID in some communities to high rate of isolation in others. Dr. Williams shares tips for senior care communities.[37:52] Dr. Williams describes her personal experience of overcoming COVID and shares an important message.Click here to listen!Help older adults stay mentally well during COVID-19. Paige Brown also known as The Experience Better Lifestylist, is an Empowerment Coach, Health and Wellness Guide and a Brand Affiliate for an amazing Athletic Wear Company that supports women and children in need. It is obvious that these are the very things that attracted me to her, but it goes so much deeper. We are in the midst of a beautiful human rights movement- The Black Lives Matter Movement, and it was her post about some of her story that really pulled at me. Paige is a mixed woman and all of her life she was told that she wasn't black enough or wasn't white enough. She didn't know where she fit in and had developed a lot of identity issues. It has been thanks to her deep healing work that she has done these past 3 years that supports her in her sharing her truth. In this episode, we talk about The Black Lives Matter Movement, white privilege, racism, and finding self. It is an incredible conversation, the best interview I have ever done. #008 - I recently received a letter from a listener:"Dear Dr. Koepp, My mom has recently become depressed. She's 94 and lives alone. She has seen her internist and is on 10mg of Lexapro. My family and I aren’t sure what we should be doing (if anything). Where should we go from here?"In today's episode of the Psychology of Aging Podcast, I talk about older adults and depression. I share what you need to know and how you can help. And here's why this is so important. Depression is the most prevalent mental health condition among older adults. I share where to begin when you notice signs of depression.[06:04] Depression is not a normal part of aging. So, it's really important to know the signs and symptoms of depression in older adults, so you know what to look out for.[09:12] I share a personal example of depression in my own life and what I wished I had done differently. [10:55] It's important to start a conversation with your older loved one about depression. I share tips for doing this. #005 - Last week I shared many examples of older adults living in long-term care communities whose families are not able to visit them in person. You probably know older adults who have been admitted to the hospital since the Coronavirus Pandemic and aren't allowed to have family by their side to comfort them and advocate for them. This experience is incredibly upsetting and unsettling for families... because in times of pain and suffering and fear and loss and illness, it's healthy to reach to others for closeness. In fact, being physically close with our loved ones when we are sick actually provides comfort and helps us to heal. This is a cruel irony indeed. On one hand, physical comfort is healing and protective and on the other hand, physical closeness can cause us harm (e.g., COVID-19). Social distancing when our loved ones are sick, has taken away one of our healthiest coping and soothing strategies. As if illness was not hard enough, now there's separation to contend with as well. You may be surprised to learn that there is actually a name for what is happening. It's called Ambiguous Loss. And in today's podcast I explore Ambiguous Loss more deeply. In this episode, I discuss anticipatory grief and ambiguous loss during COVID-19 especially as they relate to older adults and their families. And, I’ll offer suggestions for moving through grief during the Coronavirus pandemic. Here’s a look at what I talk about in this episode…[02:47] Everything you need to know about anticipatory grief, starts here.[04:08] When we begin to process grief, there's a common experience of reflecting on missed opportunities in the past and anticipating losses in the future. Learn why.[06:02] COVID-19 is de-stabilizing life as we knew it and triggering anticipatory grief. As humans, however, we are no strangers to this type of grief, we experience it all throughout our lives. [10:47] You may be surprised to hear that I am grateful for the concept of ambiguous loss. I explain why.[12:59] There are two types of Ambiguous Loss. Part One: Psychological Presence and Physical Absence is described here. We are experiencing a tremendous amount of this type of loss during the Coronavirus Pandemic.[15:46] The second type of Ambiguous Loss is when there is a Psychological Absence and a Physical Presence, like with dementia. This is one of the reasons caring for a loved one with dementia is so incredibly painful. [18:16] I share several recommendations for helping you to move through anticipatory grief and ambiguous loss with By the end of this episode, you'll have a language for talking about how complicated what you're going through actually is during COVID-19 and why you may be feeling drained at the end of the day. You'll understand that grief is a natural human experience and the more we can acknowledge it, normalize it, and find ways to work with it and through it, the better and healthier we'll all be.Check out the show notes here! #004 - We’ve all heard stories of older adults on lock down in their long-term care community. As a Psychologist who specializes with older adults and families, and who provides a lot of education and training to long-term care communities, I have the unique opportunity to see into the inner world of the older adult living in a long-term care community, the concerned family member, and the long-term care community and it's staff as well. In this episode, I explore the common emotional experiences during COVID-19 of older adults, their families, and the senior care communities they live in. And, I’ll offer recommendations for helping each group to improve their quality of life and strengthen their relationships to one another during the COVID-19 pandemic. Here’s a look at what I talk about in this episode…[07:43] Even without COVID-19, moving into a senior care community is an adjustment for even the healthiest of families and older adults. I talk a little bit about this adjustment here.[11:33] I describe the common experiences and feelings of older adults living in quarantine or "lock-down"in a senior care community[16:49] My biggest concern with older adults living on lock-down in their long-term care community is that it might validate their sense of rejection or abandonment from society[18:37] Family members are desperate for information and tools for helping their loved one living in a senior care community. I describe many of the fears and concerns family members are facing during COVID-19.[21:37] What feelings arise when your older loved one becomes sick and you cannot see them? Family members are experiencing extreme fear, desperation, and distress.[22:30] Senior Care Communities are making many pivots to keep up with CDC guidelines, maintain care for residents, communicate with families, and provide healthy work places for staff. [27:35] Team work makes the dream work for everyone. Learn more about my number one recommendation![28:11] Learn about what older adults living in senior care communities can do to enhance their quality of life while on quarantine[29:21] Family members have an important role in helping an older adult to live their best life and the senior care community to provide their best care! These recommendations can help![32:41] Senior Care Communities have a lot on their plate, but a little effort with communication can go a long way. Learn how. By the end of this episode, you'll have a better understanding of what each group can do to help improve their quality of life and strengthen their relationships with one another during the COVID-19 pandemic... and ultimately improve health and wellness for all! #003 - Do you know any older adults who are refusing to maintain their social distance? Let me give you an example. Have you seen the article of the Italian doctors who returned to work after retirement to assist the Italian healthcare system only to become seriously ill or die themselves as a result of the Coronavirus? A listener actually recently emailed me to say that she's really worried about her own parent who recently returned from retirement to assist with their medical clinic... and this clinic doesn't even treat Coronavirus! This listener was distraught! She felt powerless over her older parent's decision. I wanted to spend some time on this podcast talking a little bit about the psychological underpinnings of why older adults might refuse to maintain social distance and work instead. In this episode, I share two psychological theories to explain why older adults may put themselves at risk by working rather than remain socially distant, including:>> Sebastian Junger's, Tribe Phenomenon>> Erik Erikson's Psycho-Social Development Model Here’s a look at what I talk about in this episode…[02:20] Discover the similarity between soldiers returning from deployment only to request to return to the front lines and healthcare workers returning from retirement to work during COVID-19.[02:44] This phenomenon is best described in Sebastian Junger'sbest selling book, Tribe.[06:03] Ever wonder why as humans we have an innate drive to create and contribute to the wellbeing of others? Erik Erikson's Psychosocial Development model helps us understand this with his stage, Generativity versus Stagnation.[07:10] I share one of my favorite examples of Generativity, Sarah Blakely.[08:02] Learn about the psychological and social downside of not mastering Generativityin middle age. There's even a name for it- Stagnation. [08:38] Learn what it takes for older adults to reflect on their lives and experience few regrets, according to Erikson's final stage in human development - Integrity vs. Despair. [09:39] Lastly, I tie up these theories in a lovely bow to discuss the notion that older adults who choose to work may be acting with integrity to put themselves at risk, and at the same time may be protecting themselves from despair.By the end of this episode, you'll have a better understanding of why some older adults may choose to work during COVID-19 despite great risk to themselves.Check out the show notes here!
