Zach Veach has had an incredible professional auto racing journey. He climbed the open wheel ladder system and made it all the way to the NTT IndyCar Series. After three seasons with Andretti Autosport, Veach transitioned to the Vasser Sullivan Lexus RC F GT3 GTD program in IMSA (International Motor Sports Asscociation) and is adapting well to his new “office.” In this interview he talks about his journey and transition into “tin tops” as well as how he prepares for his race weekends. We’ve said we’d avoid doing remote interviews but, well, changing times call for changing approaches. The final in our series of catch-ups with previous guests, we reached out to Zach Veach, who in only five months has encountered a whole number of life changes, luckily he can laugh. Closeout song is “Climb Down That Tree” […]
Zach Veach is most known in American open wheel racing for making his opportunities happen for himself. Not growing up with the same wealthy means as others, Zach created a series of opportunities for himself first in Indy Lights, where he won multiple races, and then securing his own sponsorship in IndyCar to run the […]
It's Part 1 of the Week In IndyCar Listener Q&A show as we dive into a bunch of questions submitted via social media. A sampling of the items posed this week (Q&A begins at the 2m40s mark in the episode): "What actually happened to Zach Veach? I doubt he willingly stepped aside for the rest of the year to help the team prepare for next season, he seems like a great guy, but I don't think any racing driver no matter how nice they are would willingly do that. As a Canadian I'm very happy to see Hinch back in the car, what are his odds of being in that seat, or at least that organization for next season?" "Do you think that Sergio Perez could make the transition to IndyCar, now he has been replaced by Seb Vettel at Aston Martin in F1 #mepersonally he would fit in well at SPAM with Pato O'Ward and brings investment to the team." "Due to the lack of Indy Lights this year, do you think this will give the current crop drivers higher chance not being replaced, or will teams spend more time considering options from F1 / sports car championships?" We really ought to retire the catchphrase. Yep, this is a review of the 104th Running of the Indianapolis 500 as Takuma Sato stole Scott Dixon's lunch money after one of the most dominant displays in the history of the race - The latter leading 111 laps! Some of the key talking points we mention are below: Start Scott Dixon immediately takes the lead from Marco Andretti, Zach Veach makes contact with Ed Carpenter on the short chute between 1 and 2 Lap 6 - First Caution James Davison had a catastrophic brake failure as his right-front wheel caught fire then exploded. It is believed that his front brake line pinched or kinked, clamping the front brakes shut with almost 300 pounds of pressure. Lap 25 Marcus Ericsson crashes in Turn 1 Lap 84 Dalton Kellett crashes in Turn 3 Lap 93 During the restart, Conor Daly spins out in Turn 4. Oliver Askew spears into the inside wall avoiding the incident. Lap 100 The race restarts, Dixon and Rossi leapfrog each other away from the rest of the field. Lap 122 Alex Palou crashes in Turn 2 Alexander Rossi makes contact with Takuma Sato while leaving his pit box and is penalized for avoidable contact. Lap 144 Alexander Rossi crashes in Turn 2 Lap 170 Scott Dixon pits for the final time, undercutting Takuma Sato who pitted a lap prior. Lap 196 Spencer Pigot spun out on the exit of Turn 4 and crashed heavily into the end of the pit wall. The race ended under caution with Takuma Sato ahead of Scott Dixon. [20:30] The Not News (only if we have time) - Jean Todt visits the 500 - Roger Penske is reportedly flying to Nashville for potential 2021 street race deal.
The DTC dissects a variety of driver movement news that includes Zach Veach’s abrupt departure from Andretti Autosport and the major announcement that Michael Jordan will field a NASCAR Cup team with Denny Hamlin and Bubba Wallace. It's the first of a two-part World Wide Technology Raceway doubleheader wrap-up episode of the Week In IndyCar Listener Q&A show as we dive into a bunch of questions submitted via social media. A sampling of the items posed this week (Q&A begins at the 8m31s mark in the episode): "Michael Andretti seemed especially mad at Zach Veach after he piled into that race 1 crash. Have you heard anything about Zach's chances of staying at Andretti? If he leaves, who gets that seat? Hinch? Conor Daly? Kevin Magnussen? Scott Tucker?" "I saw that Dave Furst is the new VP Of Communications for IndyCar. This seems to be a bit of a revolving door position with Curt Cavin and Mike Zizzo having the job the past couple of years and Zizzo in the role for a short time. Any insight on this?" "Do you think RHR & Colton Herta are justified in their frustrations with RVK? Is he angering other members of the paddock as well, or just the Andretti Autosport duo?" "It seems like I notice articles on Racer.com reporting NASCAR teams failing post race tech and associated penalties issued at a much higher rate than IndyCar. Any reason to the seemingly perfect tech inspection record by IndyCar teams, is it under-reported or are penalties dished out in a hushed manner? Also, what's the best instance of bending the rules or fooling tech inspectors you ever saw?"
