Episode #522: 2024 IndyCar Grand Prix Of Detroit Review

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 10, 2024 68:40

Sorry this one's a little late folks, Dre was caught up with the day job, but allow yourself to catch up with what we thought about one of the most chaotic races in recent times, the 2024 Detroit Grand Prix! It was THE chaotic race of 2024. Eight cautions, 12 driving penalties handed out (Four of which to Will Power, whose race position looked like an EKG monitor), and FORTY-SEVEN per cent of the race ran under yellow, including 20 straight in the middle of a damp Detroit where everyone was caught out by the bumpy braking point into Turn 3 on Chambers Street. Yikes. In the end, Scott Dixon kept a cool head and did what he does best - save fuel brilliantly when a race broke out at the end and lead a Honda 1-2-3-4 in Chevrolet's back yard, and the gang try to make sense of one of the craziest IndyCar races in modern times, including a Penske implosion! But there was also two major PR nightmare the series delivered that we had to discuss - Santino Ferrucci having a shoving match with Kyle Kirkwood and dropping a homophobic remark when interviewed about it (Right on the first day of Pride Month). Then Agustin Canapino and the first part of his verbal tirade after Theo Pourchaire hit him during the race, and Ricardo Juncos calls him a "Son of a thousand whores" on the team radio. There'll be more on this next week, but see where the story began. All that and more on another Motorsport101!

Episode #521: Marc Marquez Moves To Ducati

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 6, 2024 69:52

Well, that took a turn. In one of MotoGP's biggest ever silly-season decisions taken by a factory side, Ducati announced yesterday that Marc Marquez had signed for the factory Ducati team, in a shock reversal from the Bologna factory's higher-ups. According to Autosport and other reports, Championship leader Jorge Martin was offered the seat after the Catalan GP, but Ducati changed their mind when their suggestion to Marquez of joining Pramac was firmly rejected. Marc made a powerplay, forcing Ducati to make a decision, and pulled the trigger on turning Marc, red. As a result, Jorge Martin's now heading to Aprilia, in a shock 24-hour lightning turnaround of a deal. So what does it all mean? Why did Ducati change their minds? Just how good has Marquez been so far? And what does it mean for the rest of the field. Can Jorge Martin bring the #1 plate to Noale? What about the other forgotten man in the field in Enea Bastianini, who looks set to join Tech3 KTM? Will he clash with wonderkid Pedro Acosta? And what about the rest of silly season? Will Ducati lose Pramac as a customer as Yamaha makes a compelling case to buddy up again? Will Trackhouse take Joe Roberts, or someone like Joan Mir? Where do the GP25's end up if Pramac moves? So many questions, so little time on a huge Motorsport101! Oh and the Italian GP was mentioned too! (Special thanks to Lyla Carvallo for the wonderful edit, check her out at @lylasthinking on X)

In the middle of the biggest weekend of Motorsport, we had a Catalan Grand Prix in MotoGP to take care of, and with it, we had an erratic weekend from race winner Pecco Bagnaia, who crashed out embarassingly from the lead in the final lap of the Sprint, only to come back and take control of the Grand Prix. Find out how he bullied Jorge Martin into second on the show. There's also more Marc Marquez talk, as he had to make two more furious comebacks from 14th on the grid, as he took that spot to second in the Sprint and third in the GP. Is the qualifying becoming a problem for MM93 though? We also talk about Aleix Espargaro announcing his retirement over the weekend too, and talk about how the last rider of the 800cc era became one of the best riders in the world and an ambassador for the grid. Also, there's calendar news too as Kazakstan takes India's spot on the calendar as 2024 as Buddh likely moves to 2025, and Repsol and Honda breaking up after nearly 30 years together. It's a loaded episode of Motorsport101, listen in now!

Welcome to an extended edition of Motorsport101, because quite frankly, we didn't think Monaco was worth a full episode of the show, but it made for a fine Keepin' It 101 opening segment. So if you want to skip to the Indy 500, fast forward to 19:20. In that opening segment, we praise Charles Leclerc for winning the Monaco Grand Prix in dominant fashion over Oscar Piastri and Carlos Sainz, while also casting an eye on a chaotic Lap 1, with Sergio Perez in a huge accident with both Haas drivers, and the Alpine's of Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly colliding again at Portier. Then we get into the 108th Running of the Indy 500, with Josef Newgarden and Pato O'Ward going head-to-head for the win once again, with Josef going back-to-back for 500 wins for the first time since 2002. We talk about how they did it, as well as the polarising characters of Newgarden and O'Ward in 2024, something guest host RyanErikKing called "This generations Foyt and Andretti." We also talk about the big winners and losers of the race, such as Kyle Larson, Alex Palou, Christian Rasmussen and Conor Daly, and some of the drivers who struggled like Will Power and Honda as a engine supplier in general. And we deal with the breaking news of Tom Blomqvist being benched at Meyer Shank Racing for the return of Helio Castroneves. All that and more in the next Motorsport101!

Max Verstappen had to go hard to win his 59th GP of his career (Fun Fact: Every other member of Red Bull's history also has 59 combined), at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix last week, but he had to earn it after a spirited fight with Lando Norris for McLaren. Max was going so easy on his tyres at the back end of the split, he lost a 7 second lead in the last 20 laps of the race, leading to Norris being in the DRS zone of Max right at the end of the race. Is it the first sign that Red Bull are being caught? There's also dialogue on the state of the silly season after Carlos Sainz is still on the fence about signing with Audi, as well as Valterri Bottas being seen coming out of Williams garage citing "coffee" as the reason. So who may end up where in F1? Listen in to find out! And finally, F1 has had to deny it's going to America for a fourth race on the schedule, and instead made it clear they want to make moves in Asia, with Thailand set to join the calendar in 2027 and South Korea also potentially joining in the future. Is this the right move for the series and will European rounds suffer as a result? All that and more on another episode of Motorsport101!

He's had 22 of them in a row going back to his 2022 season. Of them, 18 are Top 5's. His insane run of form ties in beautifully with the heated three-way fight for the win he had with Will Power, as his Zenmaster form begins to return from 2022, and Lundgaard, the Indy GP specialist who cannot catch a break after his fifth Top 5 finish at the track. We talk about how it all came together on track. Also, does IndyCar have a marketing problem... or a storytelling problem? It's amazing. We thought MotoGP was the regular series that had the most potential problems heading into 2024 and it's delivered new ownership, three classic races in a row, and a likeable new set of regulations. Who'd have thought? Jorge Martin held his nerve in an incredibly intense French GP in front of 120,000 rabid home fans, as Marc Marquez took some revenge on Francesco Bagnaia after beating him with a stunning final lap divebomb. Martin after another perfect Sprint/Win double, now has a 38-point lead in the standings. But will it be enough for him to claim the Factory Ducati seat over Marquez or current resident Enea Bastianini? We also talk about the the new regulations and there's some big changes planned. Ride-height and holeshot devices banned? Fairings reduced in width and shorter from the front. Fuel reduced to 20 litres from 22. Rear aero now included in homologation. And engine displacement reduced from 1000cc to 850. But will it work? And will there be after-effects? All that and more on another loaded Motorsport101!

Sadly, it wasn't without controversy though, as US Presidential Candidate and former Preisdent Donald Trump was invited to the race on behalf of F1 and Lando and McLaren were probably a bit too accomodating for him. We talk about that. CONTENT WARNING: Sexual language is used that you may find upsetting, be careful if you choose to listen. Look after yourselves. And in an idea that came together by the wonderful RJ O'Connell, we decided to recount and retell the 50 most important moments in the nine and a half year history of the show. Back in October 2014, Dre Harrison and Ryan King decided to start a podcast for Dre's final-year University project. We never thought a decade on, we'd still be doing this. In this edition of the show, we take care of the other major breaking news story of last week, Andretti's bid of getting on the grid for 2026 being rejected by F1's management wing. Where do they go from there, and will they persue the 2028 Grid instead with FOM leaving that option out there? And finally, a full review of the 24 Hours of Daytona as Porsche won a heated 23 hour and 58 minute battle with Cadillac's #31 car with Tom Blomqvist gunning for Porsche's Felipe Nasr right at the very end. We talk about that almost race long fight, as well as the other big picks of RJ's #01 Cadillac suffering another failure, as well as the #10 Acura's explosion in the night as well. We also talk about LMP2 with a Lieger that went horribly wrong (Like, bringing out five cautions wrong), as well as an impressive win for ERA Motorsport and IndyCar's Christian Rasmussen leading the charge, as well as a dominant win in GTD Pro for RISI Competizione and Ferrari! ...And just how did a 24 hour race end 2 minutes early anyway? In this special episode, all FOUR hosts (Yes, we got King in for this one too), break down all the angles from the biggest transfer of the social media era of F1, as Lewis Hamilton will be joining Ferrari in 2025. The shock of the move itself and how we got to this point. How did Lewis go from signing a 2-year extension in August to activing a release clause just 5 months later? Can he bring in some of his own favourite staff? And can he co-exist with Charles Leclerc, another elite driver? Can Fred Vasseur (Who's worked with them both), control that relationship? Then there's the greater ramifications. Carlos Sainz is now confirmed to be out of Ferrari at the end of the year, where does he end up if he stays on the grid for 2025? And then how do you define the morale at Mercedes? It can't be great when they're about to lose a transcedent star. Who do you replace Lewis with? Is it Alex Albon? Fernando Alonso? Esteban Ocon? Or do you gamble on F2's Andrea Kimi Antonelli, their golden prospect? It's a deep-dive to end all deep-dives, in a bonus Motorsport101!

KTM themselves are in an interesting place, after moving up to second, but a distant second. Is Brad Binder alone enough to close the gap for an inconsistent factory effort? Has Jack Miller become cooked? And was the right man flipped for Pedro Acosta? And finally, Ducati. From the brilliance of Bez and Diggia's late surge, to Marini's shock departure.
