Presentatie: Robert Denneman
There were IndyCars on track at Indianapolis Motor Speedway last week for a hybrid system test, and Conor Daly was again behind the wheel of a Juncos Hollinger Racing Dallara participating. He checks into Speed Street to fill co-host Chase Holden and listeners in on what unfolded in the test, which was the first time a lot of drivers got to try the new hybrid cars out at the legendary oval. Conor explains with the newly added weight of the hybrid system, the cars are slow in comparison to previous years, but it's still too early to make a prediction of how next year's Month of May will be. The guys also dig into other big news items in the IndyCar world including more details being revealed about the Arlington Street Race, Fox beginning promotion of the 2025 Indy 500 and Hailie Deegan making the jump from the NASCAR world to run IndyNXT full time.Conor's former Ed Carpenter Racing teammate Rinus VeeKay joins the show to chat about his last minute hire to drive for Dale Coyne at the recent IMS hybrid test. Rinus explains that although he had recently been relieved of his driving duties at ECR, he still thought it would be good to show up at the IMS test and try to schedule some meetings with potential new teams, which led to him getting in the Coyne car for some laps. Having spent a lot of time at ECR with Rinus, Conor was curious to what factors may have contributed to the team's struggles in recent years, despite driver effort. The guys also fielded questions from social media listeners, who wanted to know what the dynamic between Conor and Rinus was like as teammates and what the team was like after Conor left. Rinus explains that one of the main reasons he ended up making the jump from the European karting ranks to the Road to Indy was the scholarship system in place, which helped get him into the IndyNXT ranks and in front of IndyCar team owners. They also discussed what may be on the horizon for Rinus, to which he is optimistic he will be back in IndyCar full time.
Conor Daly traded his Dallara in for a Silverado this past weekend as he was in NASCAR Truck action at Kansas. He joins co-host Chase Holden to dig into how the Friday night event unfolded and how he managed to bring the PolkaDot sponsored Niece Motorsports number-44 entry home in 17th position. They also catch up on the latest IndyCar off-season news, where Alexander Rossi has been tabbed to be the new pilot for the Ed Carpenter Racing number-20 ride. Conor explains why he is upset with ECR's lack of acknowledgement for former racer Rinus VeeKay's contributions to the team. IndyCar's rumored return to Texas and Michael Andretti stepping down from his position of power at Andretti Global are also discussed.Team Penske Racing Engineer Luke Mason joins the show to help give listeners a better idea of the technical side of IndyCar racing. Through his position on Josef Newgarden's team, Luke has won back to back Indianapolis 500s over the past two seasons. Conor and Luke discuss how some drivers in the paddock have struggled to get used to the heavier Dallara that has developed over the years with the introduction of the aeroscreen and the hybrid system. They also dive into the world of dampers and how much of a difference they make in car setup programs. Conor asks Luke about the aerodynamics of the car and trim methods used to help make speed in qualifying, as well as how his requests to find comfort in the car differ from Josef. 21+ and present in North Carolina. Tonight, on Trackside, we have a lot of news to talk about! Kevin and Curt start the show by talking about Keanu Reeves racing at IMS. They discuss Rossi moving to Ed Carpenter Racing, and how he can help Ed Carpenter Racing become a better team. They also talk about Christian Rasmussen going to ECR as well. They debate on who will be in the Juncos lineup, and Jamie Chadwick's test at IMS. Kevin talks about how she could benefit from another year of Indy NXT. Later, Kevin and Curt talk about the big news that Michael Andretti has stepped down from his leadership role at Andretti. They talk about who will take over in Andretti's stead, and what will happen to the team's name. They speculate if the reason Andretti stepped down was because of F1 refusing to have the Andretti branding. They also discuss Wayne Taylor Racing removing the Andretti name from their branding. To round out the first hour, Kevin previews the next hour. In the second hour of the show, Kevin and Curt look at some tweets by fans. They talk about the group that Zak Brown and Michael Andretti formed called Andretti Acquisition Corp. II, and what the purpose of the organization is. Could it be to buy IndyCar? They also answer a question about other investors being added to IndyCar to help with growing the series. They also talk about the schedule, and the importance of avoiding football. Later, Kevin and Curt talk about the likelihood of returning to some previous tracks that fans have been vying for several seasons. They talk about if they will ever go back to Phoenix and Watkins Glen. They also talk about the possibility of Daniel Riccardo racing IndyCar, and his fear of ovals. To end the show, Kevin reviews what they missed, including if the IMS oval test will be open to the public. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The development that shocked the IndyCar world last week was that Rinus VeeKay has been let go by Ed Carpenter Racing. Also, the guys weigh in on the FBI raid of Rahal Letterman Lanigan.2024 IndyCar Champion Alex Palou stops by the show to talk about how he clinched his third title in four years during the Nashville finale weekend. After a rough qualifying effort and a grid penalty, Alex knew he had the odds stacked against him to stay ahead of Will Power in the final points standings. Alex explains that he was relieved when he heard about Will's seat belt failure and unplanned pit stop, but was disappointed that they did not get to race each other properly for the title. Alex and Conor relate over how the race at Nashville played out and what made it fun, but different from other oval races this season. Finally, Alex talks about his goal to win an oval race next season and what it will take to stay ahead of the competition.

It was another all-time classic race in Indiana as the 108th running of the Indy 500 led to a final lap showdown between arguably the two best oval drivers in the world, as Josef Newgarden and Pato O'Ward left it all on the line, with Newgarden taking victory and becoming the first man to go back-to-back at the 500 since Helio Castroneves in 2002! Joey Barnes joins Steph Wentworth on the Autosport to discuss the wonderful fight for the win between Newgarden and O'Ward and breakdown how O'Ward used strategy and aggression to get back through the field, and the conflicting emotions between the two drivers. Also on the show, a deep dive into the race's high-level of attrition, with just 21 cars out of 33 finishing on the lead lap, and how the four-hour rain delay and the possibility of a race that had less than the alloted 200 laps caused the drivers to be even more aggressive than usual. There's also a chat about Kyle Larson who finished 18th in his first ever Indy 500 as he attempted the famous double with NASCAR's Coke 600, how the rain delays both in Indiana and North Carolina scuppered his chances, and whether he or Ed Carpenter Racing's Christian Rasmussen should win Rookie of the Year honours. As drivers follow their trajectory through motorsports, they are often faced with potentially life-changing decisions. On episode 397 of the Dale Jr. Download, Indycar talent Conor Daly joins Dale Earnhardt Jr. and co-host Mike Davis to discuss a crossroads he faced and how his choice affected his career path. After winning the Star Mazda Championship in 2010 and securing a hefty scholarship fund to invest in his future racing endeavors, Daly had to make the selection of a lifetime: pursue Formula One or Indycar? Son of former Formula One driver Derek Daly and Indianapolis Motor Speedway employee Beth Boles, Conor was no stranger to auto racing. In fact, he begins by saying that he has hardly any early-life memories that don't involve racing. He recalled his time spent at the Racing Babies childcare facility at IMS and his early infatuation with the sport. He also spoke of his father's racing career, which ended when he was born in 1991, and how he has been able to uncover more of his accomplishments through the digital age. Up to that point in 2010, Conor had rapidly progressed up the opening rungs of the motorsports ladder. From his first time behind the wheel of a go-kart at age 10 to winning the 2006 World Karting Association Grand Nationals, he and his father Derek worked tirelessly on his burgeoning career. From karts, he took on car racing through the Skip Barber National Championship, which he won in his first year in 2008. Then came the Star Mazda circuit, which of course brings the story to that crossroads at the end of the 2010 season. A stipulation of Conor's scholarship and the Road to Indy program was that while he could take part of the money and pursue GP3 racing in Europe, he still needed to enter a handful of Indy Lights events. After the first three events of the schedule, competing for Sam Schmidt Motorsports, Conor found himself with a 2nd place finish and a victory and leading the season points. His prospects in the world of Indycar were so high, that he revealed he actually got a call from Graham Rahal as he was about to depart for Europe, asking him, “are you sure you want to do this?” Ultimately, Conor left the United States and departed for England, where he'd stay with Rahal's stepfather Chris Berry and set up a home base for his time spent racing in GP3. Daly explained that in his debut GP3 race he qualified 29th and was immediately hit with the regret of his decision. In his absence in the Indy Lights series, Josef Newgarden would go on to win the championship and sign a three-year contract with Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing. And while Daly would wind up inking a deal with the Force India Formula One team that would have him serve as a test and reserve driver, his time overseas would prove unfruitful, and he returned home to pursue a path in Indycar. Conor and Dale Jr. discuss Europe's perspective on American racers and theorize as to why it is difficult for them to break into the Formula racing ladder. After returning home, Daly did whatever he could to be at the tracks on race weekends, even at one point driving the Indycar two-seater for fan experiences. His perseverance would eventually win out, as he rose from filling in for injured drivers to racing part-time and now full-time for Ed Carpenter Racing. Daly took time to speak on the ascension from spending his childhood at IMS to racing in the Indianapolis 500. Just this past May in the 106th running of the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing”, the hometown hero brought home his best finish to date, sixth place. DIRTY AIRBefore Conor joins the show, Dale, Mike, Alex, and Hannah chat about: Kelley's birthday bash Long weekend in Daytona The great Cup race rain debacle Kurt Busch's injury progress ASKJR presented by XfinityThis week the fans asked questions about: Strangest excuse to explain a crash Feelings on Greg Ives' leaving as crew chief Updates on his ongoing car projects Championship Four predictions To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices.
