During the 20 years of International Formula 3000 as the main training ground for Formula 1, before it was replaced by GP2 in 2005, many motorsport legends passed through without becoming champion. From drivers that went on to become F1 race winners to Indianapolis 500 conquerors and sportscar heroes, we've attempted to rank the best nearly-men of F3000 during the latest episode of the Autosport podcast, which features special guest David Sears. Boss of the Super Nova Racing team that delivered titles with Vincenzo Sospiri, Ricardo Zonta, Juan Pablo Montoya and Sebastien Bourdais between 1995 and 2002, Sears joins chief editor Kevin Turner and Plus editor James Newbold to dissect our resident F3000 enthusiast's list. He also shares his anecdotes of the Super Nova drivers that made our list and reflects on those he raced against during a glittering driving career that morphed into becoming a team owner and driver manager. Together they are teammates in the Cadillac VSeries.R IMSA GTP car for Chip Ganassi Racing. We caught up with the champagne soaked duo just after their 2024 Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach winning post-race press conference. The two share what the key to victory was, how their team dynamic works and what happened here last year at the start. Bourdais also talks about the future of the program and also seeing his McDonald's Indy car that he won with here years ago. Honest, straightforward and humorously entertaining. Enjoy! Renger van der Zande is teamed with Sebastien Bourdais in the IMSA WeatherTech Series racing a Cadillac GTP car for Chip Ganassi Racing. We caught up with him for this interview during a cold and rainy press day for the 2023 Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach. Besides being a multiple winner at the Rolex 24hrs of Daytona, Renger has successfully competed in multiple classes around the world. In this interview, Renger talks about the differences to the new (for this year) hybrid powered Cadillac compared to last year, gives props to his teammate in regards to their race at Long Beach last year and talks about his thoughts on what the strengths of his race car is and how he wants to get back to the winner's circle. A true gentleman and supremely talented race car driver; it didn't take too much longer before he found himself in Victory Lane at Laguna Seca Raceway in May. Enjoy! NOTE: Renger will be racing in the season finale this weekend (Oct. 11-14, 2023) at the Motul Petit Le Mans at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta. By Larry Mason Copyright © 2023 Larry Mason

Racing in the Cadillac V-LMDh car in IMSA for Chip Ganassi Racing, Sebastien Bourdais will return to his home, LeMans France, to compete for overall victory. The post Ep. 347: Sebastien Bourdais – F1 and Indycar Veteran, IMSA Frontrunner first appeared on Fun With Cars.
Team building or team destruction? The most dangerous part of Peugeot's former factory 908 HDi FAP factory LMP1 program wasn't the driving; it was the pre-season team building events where bruises and broken bones were the norm, as Sebastien Bourdais and Simon Pagenaud share in Part 2 of our lookback on the great French endurance racing program that ran from 2007-2011. “It's OK, you're not going to die alone,” Bourdais said of one harrowing team exercise. The on-track action was also no picnic. To start, factory driver Franck Montagny, frequently mentioned as the center of Peugeot-related mayhem, hit a cat at 205mph while testing and the results weren't pleasant… They loved the original 908 model which ran through 2010: “It was just a perfect car,” Pagenaud said. The all-new car for 2011? “It was difficult,” he continued. “It was very pointy to drive. Man, the V8 diesel was a lot more vibration than the V12.” And how about another Montagny tale of ‘Days of Thunder' rental car racing on the highway to get to the airport after testing at Monza? Then there was the time Pagenaud threw up in the morning at Le Mans… And how much money did(n't) Peugeot pay Bourdais, its big national star? Take a listen to the conversation, and below, we have Part 1 with Bourdais, Anthony Davidson, and Pedro Lamy. [SPF]
Kyle Kirkwood came into the 2022 season with a lot of promise as he's the only driver to win all three championships on the Road to Indy ladder system in consecutive years. We chatted with him prior to the 2022 Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach about his preparation for this year's event, the Indy 500 and how he's been able to learn from veteran Sebastien Bourdais who was in this seat last year. Driving for the four-time Indy 500 winner, A.J. Foyt, Kirkwood talks about the dream coming true to finally race at the Indy 500. Enjoy! NOTE: Kirkwood had his best finish of the year at Long Beach with a 10th place. It was announced at the end of the season that he would be moving to Andretti Autosport to compete for a championship there in 2023. Kirkwood also raced with the Vasser Sullivan Lexus team for the endurance rounds in IMSA. He and his co-drivers won the season finale at the 2022 Petit Le Mans (Road Atlanta). Kirkwood also was at the top or near the top in the Thermal Club Spring Training IndyCar test in early February 2023. By Larry Mason Copyright © 2022 Larry Mason
Sebastien Bourdais captured four straight championships in an Indy car and has won in numerous other classes too. Going into the 2022 Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach would be the first time he's been to the event not racing an Indy car. He spent time with us at the pre-race media luncheon to talk about the Cadillac DPi car and the differences with Indy cars, LMP2 cars and World Endurance Championship (WEC) LMDH Hypercars. He also explains how different types of tracks in the IMSA WeatherTech series suit his Cadillac better than the competitor's cars and vice versa. A wealth of knowledge and skill – Sebastien Bourdais. Enjoy! NOTE: Sebastien Bourdais would go on to earn the pole position at Long Beach and lead the first six laps before a slight miscue with a backmarker in the hairpin would drop him to last in class. In one of the best comeback drives ever, he put his head down and made it back to the lead, handed off to his teammate who brought it home to win the race! In 2023, he continues to drive for the Chip Ganassi Cadillac GTP team and was the fastest Cadillac qualifier for the season-opening Rolex 24hrs at Daytona. By Larry Mason Copyright © 2022 Larry Mason
This edition of Brembo RED with Dan Sandberg features four-time IndyCar Champion and sportscar racer Sebastien Bourdais who talks racing, winning, and the fear of owning a Ford GT. He also tells RED what three race cars he's driven that he would want back in his garage. Also, Howard Smith, General Motors Vehicle Performance Manager for Performance SUVs and Police Vehicles, joins RED to discuss the all-new BIG horsepower 2023 Cadillac Escalade V-Series. Bourdais is currently driving the No. 01 Cadillac DPi-V.R for Chip Ganassi Racing in the IMSA WeatherTech Championship. With a win at the last race the Frenchman from Le Mans discusses his 30-year racing history, Le Mans 24, and his future in the sport. He also tells us why he “couldn't keep his Ford GT.” Smith was tasked with bringing the Escalade V-Series from grocery getter to a full size, go faster SUV. The BIG V, the result of “customer ask” has 682 hp, 653 pound-feet of torque and is stopped by BIG Brembo brakes. Smith says, “launch control was a necessity.”
Welcome to episode 23 of the Lovecars On The Grid podcast! Our hosts Tiff Needell and Paul Woodman are back to bring us another round up of motorsport events from the past week! We've had an interesting weekend from MotoGP, Formula E, Indycar and NASCAR! But we kick off with what is possibly one of the most insane road races in the World! The Isle of Man TT is currently taking place, with average speeds of over 130MPH! In WRC, we had very dusty roads in Sardinia, even after the road sweepers had been through! With 3 minute intervals between cars, it made for a tough rally, with a great weekend for Hyundai and a win for Ott Tanak. Moto GP riders were out in Barcelona, as Fabio Quartararo takes another win and begins to run away with the Championship. Will he win? In Moto2, British rider Jake Dixon qualified in 4th place, with Sam Lowe, our other British rider crashing out and retiring from the race. The win in Moto2 went to Celestino Vietti after a last lap battle with Aron Canet. In Moto3, our highest British finisher was JohnMcPhee in 7th place, but just half a second separated the top 7 riders! The win went to Spanish rider, Izan Guevara. Formula E were racing their electric cars in Jakarta. Mitch Evans took the win in his Jaguar. For the British drivers, Jake Dennis was the highest finisher in 6th place. Over in the US, the IMSA racing cars were in Belle Isle, a really tight race track! Sebastien Bourdais won with Cadillac, with British drivers Ollie Jarvis and Tom Blanc in 2nd place. Staying in Detroit, the Indycar was on Sunday at the same track. With lots of overtaking, the race win went to Will Power, having qualified from 16th, followed closely by Alexander Rossi. NASCAR was an entertaining race once again, with several incidents and yellow flags. Kyle Busch was arguably robbed of the win, following a safety car with 2 laps to go. This bunched the cars up, allowing Joey Logano to overtake and win the race. In other news, Kimi Raikkonen is going to appear in NASCAR in New York in August! BBC Top Gear was back last night also, with some old school USA banger racing. What did you think of the episode? Let us know in the comments! We also had Le Mans test weekend, and GT cars at Paul Ricard Circuit! Next week, we of course have LeMans approaching. F1 returns at Azerbaijan, with F2 supporting. Indycar are at Road America, arguably the best road course on the calendar! World Superbikes are at Lugano.

EPISODE SUMMARY Tim Coffeen, the host of “Tim Coffeen Talks Indy car and Racing History,” will share stories and memories from his long career with top Indy car teams. As a winner of seven championship rings, Tim not only understands the history of open-wheel racing, he has lived it! https://sportshistorynetwork.com/podcasts/tim-coffeen-talks-indy-car-and-racing-history/ (EPISODE ON SHN WEBSITE) EPISODE CREDITS Tim Coffeen - the man with the stories Joe Ziemba - host and interviewer Ross Blilie - intro/trailer production TIM COFFEEN BIO Long ago, the racing bug bit him. Hard. Growing up in Indianapolis, it is not difficult to imagine how the lure of speed, excitement, and powerful engines snared Tim Coffeen at an early age. He was hooked by the sport of Indy Car racing and determined that there could be no better way to make a living than doing something that he truly loved. While still in grade school, Tim would hitchhike to the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) each spring and carefully watch the competing race teams prepare for the annual Indianapolis 500, the biggest event in all of auto racing. His initial break occurred while he was still in high school when he was hired to assist in the garage area at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during the filming of the movie “Winning” starring Paul Newman. He interacted with car mechanics and other racing personnel, and no job was too intimidating, or too uncomfortable, for the young man. Little did he envision back then as a high school “rookie” that his career would span decades and his role as a team member with some of the biggest open-wheel organizations in the racing industry would result in winning seven, that's seven, Indy Car championship rings! But there is more to Tim Coffeen than his impressive racing credentials. He is an author, commentator, speaker, and historian with unsurpassed knowledge of Indy Car racing history. From his humble start as a lower-level assistant during the production of “Winning,” Coffeen quickly jumped into sprint car racing (both as a driver and as a mechanic) on old-fashioned dirt tracks throughout the country. He worked with his mentors and friends Bubby Jones and Jan Opperman for many years on the sprint car circuit, then eventually graduated to the big leagues at the IMS with drivers Opperman and Jones. During this time period, Coffeen also worked for the famed Bettenhausen brothers. In the 1980s, he joined the team headed by the respected George Bignotti as a mechanic for drivers Gordon Johncock and Mario Andretti. From 1983-1988, Coffeen worked with driver Josele Garza and the successful Machinists Union Racing. But in 1989 (and concluding in 2011), Coffeen began a long-time role with https://www.newman-haas.com/index.html (Newman-Haas Racing owned by businessman Carl Haas and actor Paul Newman.) With a stable of notable drivers, the team captured seven championships. As Lead and Chief Mechanic, Coffeen worked with such well-known drivers such as Mario and Michael Andretti, Nigel Mansell, Cristiano da Matta, Bruno Junqueira, Oriol Servia, Graham Rahal, Justin Wilson, James Hinchcliffe, and Sebastien Bourdais. It's Part 2 of the Week In IndyCar Listener Q&A show as we dive into the season file using listener-driven questions submitted via social media. A sampling of the submissions: "Two questions regarding Jimmie Johnson: What does Jimmie need to accomplish next year for his rookie IndyCar season to be considered successful? If he does relatively well could it open the door for more drivers from “non-traditional” IndyCar backgrounds?" "Has Dale Coyne Racing celebrated well the season outcome? Because after having clumsily dumped Sebastien Bourdais at the end of last year, they beautifully locked in 13th and 16th spots in the 2020 final standings. Seabass got them 7th and 11th the previous years." "What are the odds Conor Daly is back at ECR next season? Or in full time role elsewhere?" "I just booked a Triple Threat, No DQ, Barroom Brawl between Conor Daly, Sage Karam, and Will Power. Who wins, and how is the victory achieved?" Peugeot's factory LMP1 diesel program was a marvel of speed and engineering from the moment it was unveiled in 2007. Taking on Audi, the kings of Le Mans, with the twin-turbo V12-powered 908 HDi FAP, made for incredible memories as the French national team brought the fight to the German squad. Although Peugeot's turbodiesel LMP1 effort didn't last long--the brand withdrew at the end of 2011--and its final product, the twin-turbo V8 908, was far from loved by its drivers, there are tales aplenty to share, and with the help of Sebastien Bourdais, Anthony Davidson, and Pedro Lamy, we can take a deep look inside the era and all the peaks and valleys that were produced. From broken bones to shattering gearboxes to the miraculous finish on the 908's 24-hour debut, our trio provides great detail on how the Peugeot LMP1 program was wilder than anyone imagined.
