In this week's edition, we look back at this November episode, exploring how F1 teams make key decisions on areas like driver recruitment, development, and race strategy and comparing it with how things are done at a top Premier League football club. F1 is a sport built around technology, whereas, in football, the smartest teams have only begun using technology in the last decade for recruitment, strategy, in-game tactical decisions, and more. With James to compare how Mercedes recruited Kimi Antonelli with how Liverpool FC discovered Mo Salah, we have two experts in their fields. Rob Smedley, former race engineer to Felipe Massa, head of track engineering at Williams and who now runs Smedley Group which advises across the F1 spectrum on data and AI. Dr Ian Graham, of Ludonautics, was famously head of the data department at Liverpool FC for 11 years. His data analysis played a key role in building the Jurgen Klopp team that won the Premier League and Champions League. His book How to Win the Premier League is a brilliant guide to the way key decisions get taken in an elite sport.

Peter talks at length with the driver who in 2024 underwent open-heart surgery before rising again to win. Only one other driver in motor racing history - Robert Kubica - has won both a World Championship Grand Prix and a major rally championship; the other is Heikki Kovalainen. Winner of the 2008 Hungarian GP for McLaren-Mercedes and a podium finisher for Renault F1, Heikki subsequently won two Japanese Rally Championships with Toyota in 2022 and 2023. Then, in the spring of 2024, Heikki's life changed suddenly when he underwent urgent open-heart surgery in Finland. For two hours he was on life-support.As we now know, the operation was a resounding success. Heikki was soon back in business, presenting the trophies on the podium for the Secto Rally of Finland in early August, before winning again in Japan. It wasn't over, though: on November 25 he was lying a stunning third in the WRC2 division of the Rally of Japan when he crashed heavily on a fast right-hander. As he says in this interview, "it gave the new heart system a bit of a work-out..." And still there was to be an epilogue: basically uninjured, Heikki on December 14-15 jumped into a car totally new to him and won the all-tarmac Union Rally in Italy. All for the love of his sport. Which is why, in our opinion Heikki was unquestionably the star of 2024 In this interview he talks to Peter about his surgery (44:30); about his massive shunt in Japan (28.53); and about beating the likes of Michael Schumacher, Sebastien Loeb, David Coulthard, Felipe Massa, Sebastian Vettel and Toyota's latest Rally star, Sami Pajari, in head-to-head match races in a wide variety of cars (17:00).With thanks to Jetcraft, the world's largest buyer and seller of executive jets:https://jetcraft.comTo OEM Exclusive, the passionate suppliers of OEM upgrades for exotic and high-performance vehiclesAnd to TrackNinja, a lap-timer and data app designed to help users improve their on-track car and driver performance through analysis and an innovative Data Garage.
The F1 season is almost over. Max Verstappen has joined Alain Prost and Sebastian Vettel as a four-time world champion. But there is one very important matter still to resolve. The Formula 1 Constructors' Championship may not have the same caché with fans, but it matters a lot to the teams; it dictates how much F1 prize money they earn. But this year it means even more; for the first time in 16 years, the two teams fighting it out are McLaren and Ferrari. This has echoes of the great years of Schumacher and Hakkinen of Hamilton, Alonso, Raikkonen and Massa. Ferrari hasn't won the title since 2008 and McLaren hasn't won it since 1998. Whoever wins, it's going to be epic! Which of these great names will prevail? Who has the stronger drivers? And how did we get here, when the season started with a series of Red Bull 1-2 finishes? With James to discuss this are; Rob Smedley, former race engineer to Felipe Massa at Ferrari, BBC Commentator and former McLaren mechanic Marc Priestly and Autosport's own Jake Boxall-Legge. Has Lando Norris blown his opportunity to win the Drivers' World Championship? Can Ferrari stage a late push to claim the Constructors' title? And did Fernando Alonso go too far with his comments about Liam Lawson? This week, DC and EJ review the United States Grand Prix, where Ferrari achieved their first one-two finish in the US since Michael Schumacher and Felipe Massa in Indianapolis back in 2006. However, the most debated moment of the race was arguably the stewards' decision to hand Lando Norris a 5-second penalty for his overtake on championship rival Max Verstappen. DC and EJ believe the incident reflects Lando Norris' inexperience in a title fight, suggesting he should have given the position back to Verstappen and waited for a better opportunity to attack later in the lap.Plus, they question whether Ferrari made the right decision in signing seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, given his recent dip in form.Anchors, you can now join the FFS! He graciously took a break from his work with the Global Karting League, a groundbreaking initiative he's passionately leading, to join us for this conversation. The project is creating a buzz in the karting world and providing unprecedented opportunities in Motorsport to those who previously may not have had the chance to begin. In the second instalment of our series, we delve into his dynamic collaboration with Felipe Massa, recounting events from the harrowing crash in Hungary in 2009, which led to pivotal changes in helmet safety, to the intense 2008 championship finale that narrowly eluded them and has recently resurfaced in the media. A special mention goes to Rob's nephew, Ted from Western Australia, who sat alongside his uncle during the recording in silent fascination, captivated by the stories of Smedley's adventures, perhaps even drawing inspiration to tread a similar path in the future.
Another all-star field gathers for the world's first “Race of Champions” of the year (2:00); Jenson Button and Felipe Massa head the list of Formula One winners on the entry list (4:00); why driving the GTP hybrid prototype is so difficult (7:00); another heavy IndyCar component and why the hybrid will enhance those ties this year (11:30); Indy 500 winner Josef Newgarden on his adaptation to the premier category and the hybrid (14:00); Marcus Ericsson on trying to open his Andretti era with a Rolex 24 win (17:00); Colton Herta's impressive Rolex 24 record and what he enjoys about the special dynamic of teammates in sports cars (19:00); Roger Penske's deep roots in sports cars and why Le Mans and Daytona remain high on his victory target list (21:00); will Porsche Penske Motorsport improve on its Daytona disappointments of 2023? (23:00); with defending winner Meyer Shank Racing off the grid, Wayne Taylor Racing adds a second car in trying to bring Acura its fourth consecutive victory (26:00); the explosive growth of manufacturer involvement in the GT categories (30:00); the return of Corvette vs. Mustang (32:00); will the race top last year's record-setting crowd? (34:00).
While we were wondering if Felipe Massa would show himself at this years Sao Paulo GP while he tries to sue for a world title, interlagos once again did not disappoint. While Max continues to break records each and every weekend, the rest of the field has much to still fight for. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thegrandstandf1/support

On this episode of Nailing The Apex, Tim Hauraney sits down with President of Honda Performance Development (HPD) David Salters. David has been involved in building racing engines for a long time, starting with CART then moving over to building Mercedes V10 F1 engines, David walks us through how special the F1 V10 engines were, and how many engines McLaren would go through in one weekend during the V10 era (3:10). From working with Mercedes designing and building the V10, in 2006 David moved over to Ferrari F1 team and took the main position head of engine development, winning constructors championship in 2007, and 2008, while at Ferrari David worked hands on with some of the greats, and tells us about working with Michael Schumacher, Kimi Raikkonen (9:38). David was with Ferrari in 2008 when Felipe Massa lost the F1 drivers championship to Lewis Hamilton in the last few corners of the Brazilian Grand Prix and takes us through that day (13:27). While working in F1 and for Ferrari David worked with many Team Principals, and explains how Ross Brawn hired him at Ferrari (15:38). In 2013 when the new F1 V6 Hybrid Power Units were getting ready to be deployed, David tells us about the time Jean Todt, Bernie Eccelstone, came to check the noise that was coming out of the V6 Hybrid Power Units. Then talks us through how F1 missed the opportunity to tell the public just how efficient the Hybrid Power Units were (19:19). The F1 V6 Hybrid Power units are extremely complex, and David was the first to build them for Ferrari and he tells us just how difficult they were to conceptualize and execute (22:23). 2024 IndyCar will switch over to a 2.2 litre V6 Turbo Hybrid, Honda is involved in this process (27:18), David takes us through where the technology will live on the IndyCar and explains while certain elements are placed in particular areas, and how the push to pass, and regeneration will work on the Honda Power Unit (31:45). David tells us that the Hybrid technology won't interfere with the sound of the Honda IndyCar engines (39:00) Visit https://sdpn.ca for merch and more.
