Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss Catherine of Aragon (1485-1536), the youngest child of the newly dominant Spanish rulers Ferdinand and Isabella. When she was 3, her parents contracted her to marry Arthur, Prince of Wales, the heir to the Tudor king Henry VII in order to strengthen Spain's alliances, since Henry's kingdom was a longstanding trade partner and an enemy of Spain's greatest enemy, France. For the next decade Catherine had the best humanist education available, preparing her for her expected life as queen and drawing inspiration from her warrior mother. She arrived in London to be married when she was 15 but within a few months she was widowed, her situation uncertain and left relatively impoverished for someone of her status. Rather than return home, Catherine stayed and married her late husband's brother, Henry VIII. In her view and that of many around her, she was an exemplary queen and, even after Henry VIII had arranged the annulment of their marriage for the chance of a male heir with Anne Boleyn, Catherine continued to consider herself his only queen. With Lucy Wooding Langford Fellow and Tutor in History at Lincoln College, University of Oxford and Professor of Early Modern History at Oxford Maria Hayward Professor of Early Modern History at the University of SouthamptonAnd Gonzalo Velasco Berenguer Lecturer in Global Medieval and Early Modern History at the University of BristolProducer: Simon Tillotson In Our Time is a BBC Studios Audio ProductionReading list:Michelle Beer, Queenship at the Renaissance Courts of Britain: Catherine of Aragon and Margaret Tudor, 1503-1533 (Royal Historical Society, 2018)G. Dan Wootton - Media, Musk and the Future of Freedom in the UK   In this compelling episode, we dive into the UK media's evolving landscape with a prominent journalist who has transitioned from the glitz of showbiz to the gravity of political commentary. The conversation begins with an exploration of the guest's career shift, sparked by the divisive Brexit vote, which highlighted the mainstream media's reluctance to embrace democratic outcomes, pushing our guest towards independent platforms.   We discuss the inception of GB News, intended as a conservative counterbalance in a left-leaning media environment, and the challenges that ensued, including the guest's personal battle against media constraints, particularly after hosting a controversial figure. This leads into a broader discussion on cancel culture, where our guest recounts facing repercussions for promoting free speech, drawing attention to the media's uneven handling of controversial discussions.   The episode also covers a recent petition in the UK, gaining nearly two million signatures rapidly, as a testament to public unrest with the current government and establishment. This is portrayed as not just a call for electoral change but a deeper demand for systemic reform.   The conversation touches on Elon Musk's influence on social media freedom, suggesting a hopeful shift towards more open discourse. Finally, we explore the rise of populist movements across continents, advocating for a grassroots approach to political change in the UK, challenging the traditional political duopoly.    This episode is a clarion call for listeners to engage with their political environment, emphasizing the transformative potential of independent media in an era where free expression is under threat. The discussion underscores the importance of diverse voices in media, highlighting how one journalist's journey reflects broader societal shifts towards seeking truth and accountability in governance.   Connect with Dan… Dan Wootton Outspoken airs weekdays at 5PM UK/12PM ET/9AM PT

To make sure you never miss great content like this, subscribe to our channel: https://www.youtube.com/@spiked  What does Keir Starmer actually want? The UK's new Labour prime minister is usually described as moderate, pragmatic and non-ideological. Here, historian and broadcaster David Starkey argues that this is an illusion. Starmer, Starkey explains, is a fierce anti-democrat. He wants to transfer power from the UK's elected parliament to unelected bodies, from the courts to the civil service to the quangos. His party will establish the supremacy of the ‘Blob', all while cracking down hard on free speech. Our democracy and liberty are in peril.

Katherine Howard, the fifth wife of Henry VIII, was Queen Consort for only 16 months before she was executed for treason. While Henry VIII's other wives (particularly Anne Boleyn) have been constantly reinvented, Katherine has remained stereotyped as the frivolous hyper-sexualized "good-time girl" (as David Starkey phrased it). In truth, she was a far more sympathetic and interesting young woman, thrust into one of the most dangerous spotlights imaginable, the court of Henry VIII.  Featured Guests: Gareth Russell, the author of the critically acclaimed book on Katherine Howard, Young and Damned and Fair, and Dr. Nikki Clark, a senior lecturer in Early Modern History at the University of Chichester who has researched the women in the Howard family extensively. There are no universal values or human rights, argues Dr. David Starkey at our St. George's Day conference. The West's creation of international law, and international bodies to govern an international rules based system lies at the heart of the West's current problems. The West believes all peoples and regions of this world share universal beliefs and values. They don't. Russia and China understand this. We don't. Just at The West's moment of triumph, when it saw its enemies vanquished, it finds itself in its greatest identity crisis. How did the West end up mired in the identity politics of race, gender and sexuality? Why is it losing dominance on the global stage to Russia and China, the latter a superpower created by the West via entry to the WTO. Are patriotism and pride in the values and achievements we've inherited from our ancestors enough to help restore the West? These and many other issue are discussed by Dr. David Starkey in this fascinating talk delivered at "Believe in Britain & The West", the New Culture Forum's 2022 spring conference, held, appropriately, on St. George's Day. #NCFConf22 ----------------- SUBSCRIBE: If you are enjoying the show, please subscribe to our channel on YouTube (click the Subscribe Button underneath the video and then Click on the Bell icon next to it to make sure you Receive All Notifications) AUDIO: If you prefer Audio you can subscribe on itunes or Soundcloud. On 30 November 2021 Neil Oliver delivered the New Culture Forum's 2021 Smith Lecture to a sold-out audience in central London. The title to his talk was "The Attack on Our History & Culture". In recent years we have seen a concerted effort to rewrite British history, denigrating its achievements, exaggerating its faults and casting its heroes as villains. From Churchill to Nelson, our most revered national figures have been unjustly defamed & their reputations traduced. From the abolition of slavery to the Industrial Revolution and the development of one of the world's most racially tolerant societies, Britain's remarkable achievements are now undermined by agenda-driven historical revisionists. Alas, from schools to universities, our younger generations are now all too often taught such revisionism as historical fact. No surprise, therefore, that attitudes towards Britain's history & culture, and institutions such as the Monarchy, are far more negative in those under 25 than above it. This divergence in opinion is greater than we have ever known before – and does not bode well for the future. For a nation ignorant of its past is unlikely to sustain its culture, institutions and society. Whether our current predicament is evidence of the Marxist “Long March Through the Institutions” or not, from the Soviet Union to “Year Zero” Cambodia, the revision – and eradication – of history is a favourite tactic of radical ideologues. NEIL OLIVER Neil Oliver has considerable first-hand experience of “cancel culture” and the attack on history. During his tenure as President of the Scottish National Trust (2017-2020) he was subjected to numerous attacks and pressure to oust him for his public views, including supporting Scotland remaining within the Union, condemning the Scottish government's “Hate Crime Bill” and defending JK Rowling against accusations of transphobia. THE SMITH LECTURE The Smith Lecture is the NCF's flagship annual event and is delivered by a nationally or internationally significant figure from the arts, media, politics or academia noted for their involvement in the “culture wars”. It seems some things don't change after all. A now familiar row has broken out in the Labour Party over the idea of patriotism and nationality. This has been a continuous theme of the party's travails in the post-Blair era. But as debates go it's pretty thin gruel: lots of angst but little in the way of ideas. In this episode we try to go a little deeper and lay out the pitfalls and power of patriotism as a way of doing politics. To shed light on these topics, hosts Zoe Williams and Luke Cooper are joined by Labour MP Jon Cruddas, who has argued for some time now the left need to engage pragmatically with the politics of land and territory associated with nationality, and Ash Sarkar, Senior Editor at Novara Media, who has repeatedly told the likes of Piers Morgan and David Starkey that criticising your country doesn't mean you hate it. They discuss George Orwell's famous essay, 'notes on nationalism', and the work of Stuart Hall, the founder of Cultural Studies and one of the most eminent figures on the post-war new left.  Editor: Camilo Tirado  Producer: Luke Cooper  The podcast is published as a collaboration between the Another Europe Is Possible team and the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung London office.  For more information on ideas discussed in today's podcast check out these links:  George Orwell's "Notes on nationalism" Stuart Hall interview: "we need to talk about Englishness"  Jon Cruddas critque of "cyborg socialism"
