The checkered flag has flown on the 2024 IndyCar season, and Conor Daly brought the Juncos Hollinger 78-car home to a well-earned 10th place finish. He joins co-host Chase Holden to talk about the unknowns the paddock faced as they rolled into Nashville Superspeedway, a track the IndyCar Series last raced at in 2008 when only a handful of current drivers were competing. Conor explains that he actually leaned on his teammate from the 2024 Indianapolis 500 Ryan Hunter Reay for some intel on the track, to which Ryan provided his race notes from his last visit. Much of the weekend saw drivers dealing with the mountainous bump in turn four, which caused teams to focus on finding a balance in their setups to try and ease the jump. A race to the finish in the championship points standings was decided early when Will Power had a seat belt malfunction, and while Colton Herta drove into victory lane, Alex Palou celebrated his third season crown in four years.Race winner Colton Herta joins the show to discuss his epic late race battle with Pato O'Ward, which saw the two front runners split slower traffic in a move that decided the final outcome. Colton explains that after an underwhelming qualifying effort, he wasn't sure what to expect on race day. But the Andretti Global team's improvements in raceability saw Colton making steady improvements throughout the season, and he was finally able to capture his first short oval victory. Conor and Colton relate on the confusion that short track racing can cause, as lead lap and slower cars are mixed across the surface, making it hard to determine which contests are for position. Colton is excited about the momentum this victory brings, and expects to be a championship contender in 2025.

Conor Daly and co-host Chase Holden return to Speed Street after a wild weekend in the streets of Detroit. In a race that saw Scott Dixon put on another fuel saving clinic to bring home his 58th career IndyCar victory, there was no love lost amongst the rest of the field. Conor and Chase dig into the latest Santino Ferrucci spat with Andretti Global teammates Kyle Kirkwood and Colton Herta, which bubbled up during an incident in the second practice session of the weekend where Santino felt Kirkwood blocked him unnecessarily while he was on a fast mock qualifying run. This marks the latest in an ongoing saga of driver feuds surrounding Ferrucci, and Conor gives listeners more insight to the feelings in the IndyCar paddock regarding the AJ Foyt Racing pilot. Scott Dixon joins the show to chat about how he survived the chaos and how the layout of the Detroit circuit leads to aggressive, caution-laden events. While this most recent running saw 47-laps run under caution, Scott gives a few ideas for changes that could be made that may help eliminate some of the contact between cars in the tight turns of the street course. Chase also pitches the idea of the IndyCar Series returning to the highbanks of Michigan International, to which Scott replies he's game as long as the fans follow them there. Scott and Conor discuss their time spent racing each other in the 108th running of the Indianapolis 500, and Scott weighs in on his contact with Ryan Hunter-Reay. Finally, the guys preview the upcoming weekend in Road America and Scott looks forward to his chaotic schedule immediately following when he'll fly to France to begin to prepare for the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The shake-up within the ECR team sees Conor Daly replaced by Ryan Hunter-Reay, leading Daly to join Nitro Rallycross. Concluding the episode, Parker and Landon celebrate the successful collaboration between Garage 56 and NASCAR at Le Mans. Detroit was a wild one, and this time it was for all the right reasons... mostly. The new street circuit down Jefferson Avenue was an awful layout but made for some decent recent in the end. But one thing still remains clear. Alex Palou is still HIM. His first ever Street Circuit win now puts in the drivers seat for the $1m bonus and he at times looked DOMINANT in a 74 lap leading charge. Dre and Cam make the most of the performance! We also talk about a potential referendum on McLaren after Pato O'Ward made another big blunder, crashing into the wall while trying to pass Santucci. Alongside Felix Rosenqvist pushing Alexander Rossi into the wall, just what is going on with a team that should now be contending? And we get into the big news of Conor Daly being fired from Ed Carpenter Racing after a poor, but not outlandishly bad run of form, with Ryan Hunter-Reay coming out of retirement to race the #20 instead. Is there more to it than what it appears? All that and more on another loaded Motorsport101!

Being paralyzed from a horrific racing crash has not stopped the drive of Robert Wickens. The paraplegic racer shares his inspirational story with Dale Earnhardt Jr. and co-host Mike Davis. His story is also unorthodox. How did he get into racing? The exposure came from television, NASCAR and a bootleg, sex-free version of Days of Thunder. Dale Jr. and Robert connect on the mutual bond of matchbox cars, which they both, as children, used to emulate the races they watched. The two racers laugh sharing memories of innovating their makeshift tracks. The passion grew and a decision to abandon stick-and-ball sports led Wickens to go-kart racing. From there, his career took off. He moved to the states and then to Europe chasing his dream. While in Europe he navigated the pathway up the motorsports ladder in various series of competition. It was a journey that took him from open-wheeled racecars to German touring cars with Mercedes. While in the Mercedes program, his path even crossed with Formula 1 great Michael Schumacher, who served as an advisor to the team. Wickens earned his FIA Super license and was a reserve driver for a Formula 1 team. He was under contract with an F1 organization but the opportunity was severed by a driver with a bigger checkbook. Wickens' return to North America came with an opportunity to race in the NTT Indycar Series fulltime with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports. The rookie came out of the gate with authority capturing the pole at the ending of the qualifying session at the season opener at the St. Petersburg course in Florida. Wickens then led the majority of the race before controversial contact with two laps to go between he and his good friend Alexander Rossi. The incident took him out contention for the win. His Indycar progression was going well. Then August 19, 2018. Wickens lined up 6th for the 500-mile race at the tricky Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania. The seventh lap would change Robert Wickens life forever. While battling Ryan Hunter-Reay, a crash sent his car into the catchfence violently at a speed of 210 mph. Wickens tries to recall the scattered memories he has of the day, that live in bits and pieces in his mind. The accident resulted in badly fractured legs, arms, hands, ribs, neck, a pulmonary contusion and thoracic spinal fracture. Robert Wickens survived the crash but was now faced with being a paraplegic. Wickens reveals what he knows about the time he spent in an induced coma and the struggle to just survive.. He then opens up about the pain he endured from his injuries, both physically and mentally, and the ripple effect its had on so many people in his life. His journey since the crash has been damn-near miraculous. Driven by a thirst for independence and a desire to return to racing, Robert Wickens fought through various levels of rehabilitation to get to his ultimate goal. That goal? Strapping in behind the wheel of a racecar. At first, E-Sports and iRacing were his proving grounds. Now, the next chapter has begun as Wickens is competing in IMSA's Pilot Series for Hyundai in a racecar with hand-controls. It's a journey that has inspired so many, including everyone in the room.   OPEN SEGMENT Before Wickens' arrival, Dale Earnhardt Jr. reveals what it was like to be a part of the nomination panel, for the first time, at the NASCAR Hall of Fame. The DJD then debates who they would select from that list to make it into the next class of the HOF. ST. PETERSURG, FLORIDA – The 2021 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season is off to a flying start and Host Bruce Martin keeps pace by providing interviews with some of the biggest names in the series like Colton Herta, Alexander Rossi, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Conor Daly, and Jimmie Johnson. Two races into the season and it appears that youth is not just served, it's being showcased in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. Twenty-four-year-old Alex Palou won the season opening Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama at Barber Motorsports Park on April 18. This past weekend, 21-year-old Colton Herta started on the pole and led 97 laps in the 100-lap Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg to score his fourth career victory. That ties him with his father, Bryan, who is on the team's radio calling race strategy for his son this season at Andretti Autosport. It's the first time the two have worked together on the same race team and the results have so far been very impressive. Find our full show notes at evergreenpodcasts.com/pit-pass-indy.
