My guest on this episode is artist manager Zack Zarrillo. Zack is co-founder of Alternate Side, a full-service music company that represents over 30 artists in the alternative/rock/pop/electronic/metal genres. He also co-founded Bad Timing Records, and he began writing his popular music blog "PropertyOfZack" when he was just 16 years old. The blog became a go-to source for music fans and industry insiders alike. Zack's Alternate Side management has a combined catalog of over 5 Billion streams, 10 gold records, and 4 platinum records. He's also is a fierce advocate for artists' rights, which is the ethos of his company, and offers mentorship and assistance in music ownership, career development, finances and mental health. During the interview we spoke about how management has changed over the last few years, where he finds talent, how TikTok has benefited his artists, the reason why labels today aren't signing artists, the current trends in the business, and much more. I spoke with Zack via Zoom from his office in Philadelphia. On the intro I'll take a look at how we're all paying too much for concert tickets, and Spotify and YouTube Music are raising their subscription prices. var podscribeEmbedVars = { epId: 86981157, backgroundColor: 'white', font: undefined, fontColor: undefined, speakerFontColor: undefined, height: '600px', showEditButton: false, showSpeakers: true, showTimestamps: true };

On this episode of INSIDE MUSIC, fan favorite Zack Zarrillo returns to discuss a number of changes currently happening in his life. Zack recently announced plans to shutdown his popular music blog, PropertOfZack, and he also made the decision to leave or end the two podcasts he helped create. This, on top of the news he is leaving his position at Jade Tree Records, has lead many to wonder exactly what Zack has planned for the future. This episode provides listeners with a number of answers, as well as a lot of explanation. Music journalism is not always what it’s made out to be in movies or books, and during our time with Zack a lot of the falsehoods of the business are brought into the light. Enjoy!

On this episode of INSIDE MUSIC, PropertyOfZack founder Zack Zarrillo stops by to discuss the latest developments in his professional life. Zack has appeared on the show before, but since that time he has made the incredible (and possibly insane) decision to reboot his beloved music blog, which gave us the perfect excuse to chat once more. He also shares insight on the money side of blogging, as well as his plans for Bad Timing Records in 2015. All in all, it's a big chat, but also one of our favorites to date.
Many months ago, Zack traveled to Brooklyn to drink wine on Jesse’s couch. It was a dark night. Brooklyn was riddled with Ebola trying to root out the suits of CMJ. However, we overcame. Sit tight and spend the holidays listening to Jesse and Zack discuss the Loudness Wars, if paying a manager by month before income is sleazy, if reviews or press releases matter, and how to deal with writing credits. Thank you so much for listening to Off The Record in 2014. This will be our last episode of the year. We can’t wait to be back next year! On this episode of INSIDE MUSIC, host James Shotwell chats with Thomas Nasiff, co-founder of Bad Timing Records. Thomas and James have known one another through their work as music bloggers, but this is the first time the two of them have shared a real conversation. They discuss Thomas' early life in Florida, his decision to launch Bad Timing, the bromance he shares with Zack Zarrillo, and a whole lot more. This is a must-hear podcast for anyone interested in working in music, and especially those who hope to one day launch a record label.
Zack Zarrillo (PropertyOfZack, Bad Timing Records, Off The Record podcast) is on the show this week, and he's talking about blink-182's 2003 untitled album. We discuss the effect music can have on you at different developmental stages, and discover that we both own the Tom Delonge Fender Stratocaster. What we don't touch on, is Scott Raynor/Travis Barker, which usually comes up when people discuss blink-182... it's probably because I'm a decade older than Zack.
In which we discuss what we learned and got wrong in 2014, how art is viewed in the moment vs. decades later, and our end of the year lists. We're changing things up this week; instead of your regularly scheduled songwriter interview, I sat down with label owner, music blogger and band manager Zack Zarrillo to chat about our favorite songs of 2014 so far -- along with some hot-button issues. We delve into the practice of cowriting, whether bands should be scorned for the practice and why the perception of the practice differs for different musical genres. We close things out with a discussion on bands whose lyrics are penned by someone other than the lead vocalist.
