On this episode of Obsessed with Death, singer-songwriter Kevin Devine joins for a candid and wide-ranging conversation about mortality, grief, and how becoming a parent changed his perspective on purpose and risk. He reflects on early encounters with death, the emotional impact of losing his brother, sobriety, artistic interpretation, and how music about death fosters connection more than explanation.

After some time away, and ahead of his channel's 3 year anniversary, Dave recaps the past month. He talks about his trip to Pittsburgh for Eddie P. Con, comic hunting with Jim Rugg, his new home studio, and recent conversation with Kevin Devine. Dave shares an awkward moment he once shared with Metallica's James Hetfield, talking Marilyn Manson with Johnny Depp, and the time he caught Jon Stewart hilariously off-guard. www.directeditionpodcast.com
Songwriter and musician Kevin Devine joins Dave for an expansive conversation about music, nostalgia, pro-wrestling, humor, geekdom and all things in-between. They discuss the earnest will of 90's frontmen, the importance of context in creativity, and power of sobriety. Kevin shares stories from his long career, discusses his new podcast “Give it a Chance,” and reflects on the inspiration for releasing material direct to Patreon since 2020. The conversation is, hopefully, the first of many between Kevin and Dave, as long as the FBI doesn't shut them down first. With open-minds, Kevin and Casey start the podcast listening to one famously despised pop song - obviously, since we can't play the track for legal reasons, this is a quick homework assignment for our listeners to stream on their own. Kevin and Casey will give their first impressions of hearing the song as well as some insight into what the time was like when it was originally released. Next, since they are both musicians, they'll break down the good, the bad, and the ugly of the tune's musical attributes and lyricism. They'll compare this song to similar songs (that are loved!) and discuss why the world has decided this song is a famous turd.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Kevin Devine is someone that every young musician should listen to. Throughout this conversation he gave some of the most well thought out responses I have seen on the podcast. He analyzes everything and looks at music from a lense that not every musician can see through. He is also a genuine personality and is one of the nicest people out there. The interview itself was all over the place - It started with living on Staten Island covering Nirvana songs and ended with a quick conversation about how terrible our favorite sports organizations are. This is truly a must listen so tune it up and let us know your thoughts!

I know you're expecting a long podcast description filled with colorful wording and a comically loose outline of what we're talking about. Not today. No sir, I am tired today, I'm exhausted and spent. We're talking about things we've done this week. Been there, done that. Michael went to Seattle, Max went to Phish, and the world keeps turning, baby. Can you smell that? That's home cooking and the kitchen is this podcast. Please, help me find my child. Today's episode is an interview with Kevin Devine, who's in the midst of celebrating the 20th anniversary of his career and will continue to do so with two career-spanning Brooklyn shows in January 2023, both presented by BrooklynVegan. Throughout this conversation, Kevin reflected on the first two decades of his career, from his early days up through his new album 'Nothing's Real, So Nothing's Wrong,' and in the process, he touched on everything from being called emo at a time when the genre was very stigmatized, to nostalgia festivals like When We Were Young, to some of his favorite late-career albums by other artists, and more. Kevin Devine and Liam Holt are partners, but more importantly, friends that have each other's back. Both have had their share of success, but not without the challenges that come from running an electronics industry business. This is their story. They've managed to not only build a great company but also discover a way to help those in need that are fighting cancer.

Jesse Rhys Cannon on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 6/22/22 About Jesse Rhys Cannon - I somehow got my first work being paid in the music business when I was 15. Since then I've managed to work in nearly every facet of the music business. If a stranger happens to know who I am, they usually know me from being lucky enough to have worked on records in various capacities with bands like The Cure, Animal Collective, The Misfits, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Brand New, Limp Bizkit, Man Overboard, Somos, Basement, Kevin Devine, Weird Al Yankovic, NOFX and The Menzingers. I'm also known for writing the book Get More Fans: The DIY Guide To The New Music Business, which has gone on to be one of the most popular books on the music business as well as the best selling book on creativity in music Processing Creativity: The Tools, Practices And Habits Used To Make Music You're Happy With. I also host two podcasts, Off The Record and Noise Creators and write articles on the music business for various sites like Alternative Press and Party Smasher Inc. along with a handful of others. But that doesn't explain how I got to do all of that and that's what I'm supposed to explain here. When I was 15 I started to get paid for doing live sound at concerts and spoken word events. Two years later, a hilarious and fun guy by the name of Stork liked my mixes and invited me to engineer live performances at the world-renowned freeform radio station WFMU. There I was lucky enough to work for 9 years recording acts like The Magnetic Fields, Spoon, The Sea and The Cake, Olivia Tremor Control and a couple hundred others. Because of this I started doing live sound at local clubs The Pipeline and Connections. In time, I started booking shows for the company that booked those clubs and the legendary Coney Island High in NYC. Somewhere in this time I got my first credit on a record singing back up vocals on a song with Joey & Dee Dee Ramone, which I still question if I've ever topped. Those jobs gave me enough courage to put on my own concerts, and be crazy enough to think I knew what I was doing enough to start recording local bands. But all of this would happen at night, so I needed a day job. I then started working at my local punk record store (Let It Rock), which then qualified me to work at Soapbox Records on St. Marks Place in NYC. This was great since it also housed esteemed indie label Go-Kart Records where I ran the record store and did publicity. While I love marketing, PR is way too social for me and I preferred talking to creative people instead of cranky zine editors. I was also writing for the esteemed zines of the day like Tape Op, Punk Planet and Maximum RockNRoll. So I decided to stop doing live sound and working at record labels in order to focus on record production. My boss at Go Kart was kind enough to give me a recommendation to Alan Douches at West West Side Music, who happens to be the engineer with the most credits in all of music history. At West West Side I got to learn how to engineer and master from the best in the business. Not only did I get to work under Alan's amazing talent, the best producers in the business were coming by every day (J. Robbins, John Agnello, Brian McTernan) as well as the coolest bands around seemed to walk in the door every day (Fatboy Slim, Fall Out Boy, LCD Soundsystem, Brand New). In that time, I met Steve Evetts (one of my favorite producers growing up) and got to work with him on great records by The Dillinger Escape Plan, Senses Fail, Saves The Day and Say Anything. He then brought me to work with Ross Robinson (my other favorite producer growing up) and I got to work with The Cure & Limp Bizkit among others under him. While all that was happening, two other significant parts of the story happened. I harnessed my own production skills and they became so in demand I started my own studio Cannon Found Soundation, which I still run to this day working with hundreds of bands a year. In that time these two interests collided and I decided to start a blog on the things other blogs weren't writing about in music and wanted to show all the secrets being hidden since that's the most punk thing you can do and punk is the closest thing I have to a religion. This blog became Musformation, a blog I continued through 2015, when I decided to diversify my writing across sites with bigger audiences. The blog's music business articles seemed to be very popular and really resonated, so I decided to go with it. I started helping and then managing the two most promising bands I was producing — Man Overboard and Transit, so I could experiment with the ideas I was writing about. These ideas turned out to be right and both signed with one of the biggest indies in the world (Rise Records) and built massive fan bases under my watch. That was fun and all, but managing and producing records full-time do not mix. So those bands went their way and I kept producing records. A lot of bands asked me to manage them, but I like sleep and hate stress so I decided against that option. I instead put out my book Get More Fans, so every band could learn everything I did working with them and researching the new music business. Because of that book I got a reputation for knowing music tech, which led me to getting approached to do the podcast, Off The Record and form Noise Creators, a service I co-founded that helps connect musicians with the best producers in music today. I now host Atlantic Records Inside The Album where I make audio documentaries on the creative processes of some of the best artists in music like Dashboard Confessional, nothing.nowhere, Jason Mraz and Vance Joy. In 2017 I released Processing Creativity to much praise, I am presently working on a bunch of conversations I want to have on how we change the way people create music to reflect when creative science says enhances creativity. I am trying to change the way records are made and always looking for bands who are interested in doing something new and interesting. I am presently producing, mixing and mastering records 7 days a week and developing a documentary. In 2019 I relaunched Musformation as a YouTube channel to start distributing the knowledge I've acquired to a new audience. As well I relaunched MusforMGMT where I am handling marketing and label services to established artists. In 2020 I took on production duties for the hit podcast The Daily Beast's The New Abnormal as well as their other fantastic podcasts Fever Dreams & The Last Laugh. In 2021 I opened Podstream Studios a live streaming & podcast studio in the heart of Times Square as well as Brooklyn Recording Paradise Brooklyn's most enjoyable recording environment. My talk with Kevin Devine was epic. We hit the ground running discussing our mutual struggles with addiction, seeking alternative models of strength and masculinity, our love of Kurt Cobain, Elliot Smith and he shares a great story of borrowing Gordon Gano's guitar and then bleeding all over it. An Horse: Live at The Zoo, Fortitude Valley, 28 February 2020 An Horse are a duo formed by singer/guitarist Kate Cooper and drummer/backing vocalist Damon Cox. They met while working in Brisbane record store Skinny's and started playing music together in the shop after work. Their debut EP, "Not Really Scared" was released in 2008. When Canadian duo Tegan and Sara played an instore performance at Skinny's, Cooper slipped them a copy of the EP and shortly after An Horse were invited to join the Canadians on an American tour. An Horse's big American break quickly snowballed, with subsequent tours supporting Death Cab for Cutie, The New Pornographers and Jessica Lea Mayfield. They were signed to New York label Mom + Pop Records, and debut album "Rearrange Beds" was released in 2009. An Horse made waves back home when they became one of the few Australian bands to ever play live on The Late Show with David Letterman. Second album "Walls" followed in 2011 and then - after relentless touring - Cooper and Cox took a long break to concentrate on other projects. Cox drummed for Kevin Devine, Tancred and Brand New while Cooper recorded a solo album and pursued a career in commercial music production. Eventually, An Horse came back together to record a third album, "Modern Air", which was released in 2019, and the following year they came home to tour Australia. Kevin Devine is a prolific independent singer/songwriter with something like two dozen combined studio albums, live albums and EPs. He records solo, with his band (called the Goddamn Band) and as a member of Bad Books with Manchester Orchestra's Andy Hull. Kevin came up through the punk and hardcore scene in New York City, where he was born and currently makes his home. During this episode, Kevin discusses growing up in Staten Island (historically New York City's most conservative borough) with a cop as a father, but being given the freedom to explore his own beliefs. We talk a little bit of NYC evolution and gentrification, discuss Kevin's idols Kurt Cobain and Elliott Smith and their relationships with masculinity, chop it up about activism, socialism, and various other "ism"s, and try to figure out how all of this relates to his continuing personal evolution.
Jeremy Bolm plays DJ and brings you an hours worth of music and some discussion behind what you hear. Fr. Leon Pereira O.P. is chaplain to the English speaking pilgrims to Medjugorje, one of the largest pilgrimage sites in the world today. The Church is currently investigating the authenticity of the apparitions of Medjugorje and on this podcast we will always be obedient to what the Church decides and teaches. In this episode, Fr. Leon gives a beautiful insight into the importance of devotion to Our Lady and also explores and explains the 5 'stones' of Medjugorje, how they relate to the Catechism of the Catholic Church and how they bring us closer to God. FR. KEVIN DEVINE: We also ask you to keep in your prayers the soul of Fr. Kevin Devine. Fr. Kevin was the chaplain to the English speaking pilgrims prior to Fr. Leon. Fr. Kevin died shortly before the release of this podcast. He was taken to God on the Feast of the Annunciation of the Lord, on 25th March 2021. Sorpresa. Escuchar audio

Hudson Yards opens Friday, March 15th, with the public being able to visit the new shopping mall and food court, the massive sculpture of stairs (tentatively) called the Vessel History Hudson Yards is a unique development. Other areas in Manhattan may change names, like the Lower East Side splitting to become the East Village, and new areas may be built, like Battery Park City, but Hudson Yards will be the last neighborhood to grow from previously undeveloped land. The site has been a railyard since the turn of the last century and had been the target of many developers over the years, but only recently did plans come together to build the largest private real estate development in the United States on top of the block-long open area of train tracks. A cutaway model shows the multiple layers at the site: Amtrak and NJ Transit trains at the deepest level in the Hudson Tunnel, 30 tracks of LIRR storage just below ground level, then an elevated platform constructed over the tracks that contains machinery to run the complex, support structures drilled into the bedrock, and the street-level parks and building entrances. If you take the new 7 Train extension to Hudson Yards, you'll emerge from even deeper under the complex since the new station is 125 feet below street level, making it one of the deepest in the subway system. The part of the development opening now is really only half of what will ultimately rise from the rail yards. This section, east of Eleventh Ave, was developed first, but more residential towers and open public space will be added in the next phase west of Eleventh. In this episode we'll learn about a few new features opening this weekend in this new neighborhood. Stores Shopping at Hudson Yards will be pretty similar to the retail space that has opened at the new World Trade Center complex, with high-priced fashion brands filling most of the space. A multi-story Neiman Marcus will anchor the shopping areas, with stores like Louis Vuitton, Coach, and Zara showing up along the mall's corridors and stores from luxury watchmakers Patek Philippe, Rolex, and Piaget. Visit B3ta on the second floor where shoppers have the ability to try out products that are usually ordered online and produced by smaller companies that can't afford to open an entire storefront. The Shed The structure sitting along the High Line that looks like an inflatable ice cube is the art, performance, and event space at Hudson Yards, called The Shed. It's a transforming building with sliding panels and a rolling canopy that can host a variety of events. There's a very cool video animation on the Hudson Yards site showing how the Shed transforms to change from an indoor venue for concerts and art to an open-air plaza for watching movies, and the Shed will even announce on social media when it will be transforming the building for a new event, so you'll have advance notice if you want to stop by watch the four-story structure move. The Shed will be opening in early April with a five-night concert series. The Vessel The Vessel sculpture has fast become one of the most recognizable features of Hudson Yards. 150 feet tall with 154 interconnected stairways, visitors can climb onto dozens of observation platforms and view Hudson Yards from multiple directions. It's sure to become a favorite of photographers. The name may be "The Vessel" for now, but Hudson Yards will be accepting suggestions for a more-fitting name for the sculpture. During the opening ceremony where Big Bird helped Anderson Cooper officially open the Vessel to visitors, Big Bird compared the sculpture to his own Sesame Street bird nest, which is an interlocking nest of brown branches. Visiting the sculpture currently requires making a free reservation, but it's unclear if this will continue into the future or if it's only intended to keep crowd numbers low during ongoing construction at Hudson Yards. If you take any innovative photos of the Vessel or have a suggestion on a better name than "The Vessel", send them in to A Great Big City on social media! Observation Deck If you're longing for a higher vantage point, make your reservation for The Edge, an observation deck at Hudson Yards that will become the highest public balcony in the city. Jutting out to the southeast corner from 30 Hudson Yards, the triangle-shaped deck will offer a variety of views across the city and the Hudson River, all from a height of 1,100 feet. The glass walls surrounding the observation deck will lean outwards at the point of the triangle, giving daredevils an opportunity to lean forward and look straight down from a point 65 feet away from the building. The deck won't open as part of the Hudson Yards grand opening, but you can reserve a spot on the list to be one of the first visitors when it does open. The Future It may look out of place at the moment, but just like the World Trade Center complex, Hudson Yards will begin to blend in with the New York around it as construction is finished and more open spaces are added. The plaza is open to visitors and will have wifi access, so it may prove popular as a place to take a rest in Hell's Kitchen, which otherwise had a limited amount of public green space. The upcoming parkland along the High Line and the Hudson River will add a much-needed boost to an area where pedestrians were either relegated to a narrow sidewalk next to the highway and the only was the concrete rear wall of the Javits Center. Much like the open lawns along the Hudson in Battery Park City, the green space at Hudson Yards will likely prove to be a popular space for watching the sunset or having an afternoon picnic, and will really come to life when attendees from various Javits Center conventions explore the new spaces instead of trying to catch a cab out of the area. Welcome to the neighborhood, Hudson Yards! 5 years ago on March 12, 2014 — A natural gas explosion levels two five-story buildings on Park Avenue 3 years ago on March 12, 2016 — 84-foot tugboat 'The Specialist' sinks after colliding with a barge near the Tappan Zee Bridge Park of the day Davidson Playground — Morris Heights in The Bronx — Little is known about Oliver Mathias Davidson for whom this playground and the adjacent Davidson Avenue are named. Davidson served as Chief Engineer of Streets from 1867 to 1872, and at one time owned land in Fordham. The small neighborhood park contains playground equipment and many lush trees providing shade. The Queens Botanical Garden will be holding a Backyard Composting Workshop on Saturday, March 16th where you can learn what goes in a compost bin, how to maintain it properly, and how to use the compost after it has had time to develop. Registration is required, but the event is free. Call (718) 886-3800 for more info.
