Adam Nemer, founder of Simple Mental Health, shares his personal journey from a high-pressure career as a senior executive with undiagnosed anxiety and depression to becoming a dedicated mental health advocate. Nemer recounts how a thoughtful conversation initiated by a senior leader who took a mental health first aid course transformed his life, paving the way for his own healing journey and a redefined approach to leadership. By normalizing discussions around mental health, Nemer illustrates how creating supportive workplace environments can drastically improve both employee well-being and business performance. Throughout the conversation with Michael VanZetta, Nemer passionately details his mission to educate business leaders on building stigma-free workplace cultures. Through training programs and open dialogue, Simple Mental Health aims to make mental health literacy a key component of leadership, proving that compassion and awareness can transform not only individual lives but entire organizations. Nemer's commitment to shifting mindsets around mental health in the corporate world is a testament to the power of empathy, resilience, and authentic leadership.

Prior to Israel's current genocide in Gaza, that area was often referred since 2007 as an open air prison due to Israel's complete control. Our first guest this morning argues that if we explore the violence of zionism – that is, not just Gaza but zionist control more broadly – as a prison, then an abolitionist challenge to it, can come into view. Our guest is Fathi Nemer, a researcher and writer who published a piece in Scalawag Magazine called “Imprisoning Palestine: Zionist colonialism through an abolitionist lens”, in which he and his co-author argue that Israel's siege on Gaza is not the only carceral structure that zionism has imposed, but rather that the entirety of Palestinian life under zionism is a process of imprisonment. This is a slightly edited audio version of one of the MAKC livestreams we've hosted on our new Youtube channel. We will continue to polish the audio versions of those livestreams and release them as episodes here as well. Due to the amount of labor that goes into making them viable audio podcast episodes there will be a little bit of a delay on that. In the meantime I of course encourage folks to check them out on our YouTube channel and we will play with ways to get audio versions, perhaps even unedited audio versions to our patreons in a more timely manner. Please bear with us as we attempt to meet the importance of this moment with the livestreams and balance that with maintaining the catalogue for our podcast.  I will just note that prior to October 7th we already had 12 episodes of unreleased audio episodes so we will begin to get back to releasing some of those starting next week as well. As far as the livestreams the next one which we will release a properly edited audio version of will be our conversation with Fred Moten, which you can currently watch on Youtube. This conversation is an episode we recorded with the creators of Decolonize Palestine, Rawan Masri and Fathi Nemer from Ramallah in the West Bank. This conversation was recorded on October 19th so any description of current events or predictions made must be understood from that moment in time. It is our duty to continue to resist the genocidal onslaught that the United States and Israel have unleashed upon the Palestinian people, in particular the people of Gaza. I will be in DC tomorrow for the national march, which is a small act, but I look forward to being in the streets with hundreds of thousands of you tomorrow.  We will include links to many of the websites and groups they highlighted in the episode. In some cases they were responding to questions posed by folks in the chat so to that full experience you can watch this stream on YouTube. Another note you can now become a member of our Youtube channel. This will have some perks, basically very similar to being a patron of the podcast. Also we are in the process of finalizing our next study group and will have details on that for Youtube members or for patrons of the show very soon. You can become a patron of the show for as little as $1 a month at patreon.com/millennialsarekillingcapitalism On a more urgent note, there are many ways mentioned in this episode which you can also support Palestinians directly in this time from a humanitarian perspective. In these times of severe crisis caused by the US government and western support for Israeli settler colonialism and its genocidal expressions, there are urgent needs there and there are links where people can support those efforts.

In a 2021 American Psychological Association survey, nearly 3 in 5 employees (59%) said they have experienced negative impacts of work-related stress in the past month, and a vast majority (87%) of employees think actions from their employer would help their mental health. For Adam Nemer a Mental Health Leadership Consultant After a 20 year leadership career in Healthcare, mostly as a CFO and Sr Operations Executive, I've launched Simple Mental Health Leadership Consulting (www.simplementalhealth.com). Our purpose is to help leaders create stigma-free mental wellbeing workplace cultures. We do that by putting mental health literacy in their leadership toolboxes right next to marketing, finance, sales, and all the other skills they acquire over our careers. Our mission is simple: help organizations improve employee retention, performance, engagement and happiness by facilitating the creation of mental health literate leaders and psychologically safe organizations. At least 20% of American's every year experience a clinically diagnosable mental illness that pains the individual and impacts the performance of organizations just as much as any physical illness. While stigma still prevents most people from getting care, awareness of mental illness in the workplace has grown significantly post-pandemic. So much that the US Surgeon General has identified "Workplace Wellness" as one of the top 5 population health priorities for the country and 81% of workers report that they will be looking for workplaces that support mental health in the future. However, all the way from senior leaders to line supervisors, leaders don't know what to do. Their education and training was informed by the myths and stigmas of mental illness. (eg: "Leave your emotions at the door.") Widely adopted workplace wellness investments aren't "righting the ship." They're strategies bumping up against traditional organizational cultures. That's where we come in. We teach you what to do. We partner with you to incubate compassionate leaders who understand the connections between their leadership approach, their colleague's mental wellbeing, and core business metrics such as turnover, attendance, productivity, employee engagement and team dynamic. Leaders committed to creating psychologically safety among their teams. Leaders who don't see their teammates as employees or colleagues who are supposed to leave their emotions at the door, but as people who can't be separated from their feelings. In Technology of the Oppressed: Inequity and the Digital Mundane in Favelas of Brazil (MIT Press, 2022), David Nemer draws on extensive ethnographic fieldwork to provide a rich account of how favela residents engage with technology in community technology centers and in their everyday lives. Their stories reveal the structural violence of the information age. But they also show how those oppressed by technology don't just reject it, but consciously resist and appropriate it, and how their experiences with digital technologies enable them to navigate both digital and nondigital sources of oppression—and even, at times, to flourish. Nemer uses a decolonial and intersectional framework called Mundane Technology as an analytical tool to understand how digital technologies can simultaneously be sites of oppression and tools in the fight for freedom. Building on the work of the Brazilian educator and philosopher Paulo Freire, he shows how the favela residents appropriate everyday technologies—technological artifacts (cell phones, Facebook), operations (repair), and spaces (Telecenters and Lan Houses)—and use them to alleviate the oppression in their everyday lives. He also addresses the relationship of misinformation to radicalization and the rise of the new far right. Contrary to the simplistic techno-optimistic belief that technology will save the poor, even with access to technology these marginalized people face numerous sources of oppression, including technological biases, racism, classism, sexism, and censorship. Yet the spirit, love, community, resilience, and resistance of favela residents make possible their pursuit of freedom. David Nemer is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Media Studies and in the Latin American Studies program at the University of Virginia. He is also a Faculty Associate at Harvard University's Berkman Klein Center and Princeton University's Brazil Lab. His research and teaching interests cover the intersection of Science and Technology Studies (STS), Anthropology of Technology, ICT for Development (ICT4D), and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI).
