This COVID-19 situation is rough. Money problems are rough. So, when we consider financial issues during this coronavirus pandemic, that's rough on top of rough. It's a challenge – AND - there are graces, resources, and practices that can give some relief during this tough time. This Money Matters sharing contains 7 helps that may ease coronavirus-related financial burdens: Part 1: Receiving - two possible income sources for those that have lost work Part 2: Spending - three available graces that can reduce expenditures (one may bring a significant gain) Part 3: Nutrition - food resources for school-aged children out of school Part 4: Giving - encouragement about the importance of ‘living open’ - even when things feel closed and tight This episode contains audio from a video. And we know right now some people, because of financial situations, are continuing to go out to work, continuing to put themselves at risk for COVID-19 exposure because they're trying to keep money coming in their household. They have bills to pay. They have kids to take care of etc. There are helps. Some of the helps shared may be reminders, others may be options not yet considered. I’m sharing this information with prayer that the steps and resources can help meet financial needs and ease money-related stresses. If you don't personally don’t have financial concerns at this time, praise God and share this information with others. We don't know what folks are going through. Too often people have needs, there are often available resources – and there's an information gap between the two. If we can help to bridge that gap, please, please, let’s do that. You take care. God bless, be well, and stay well, physically, spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and financially. God loves you and so do I.

It's a few days before Thanksgiving - a time of year full of celebrations with family and food. Before the prolonged period of eat-festing begins, I'm led to share an episode about fasting. Hang with me here… The end of the year season is celebratory, but it can also be difficult for those that have experienced loss or are currently experiencing lack. Going into this new year, some may want or need to leave some things behind in this decade and to step into 2020 with boldness and a clear vision of what is to come. Some may need strength or movement comfort or clarity, courage, or earnestly desire a more intimate relationship with God. Fasting can minister to these and other needs. Christian fasting is prayerful abstinence from food and or/drink for spiritual purposes. While it involves food, it's about much more than food. I was in the house when the waters came in, and I thought my husband was going to die because the water closed the door to the bedroom and he couldn't escape. He was pushing, and I was pulling, and I made the decision that I had to save my son. As soon as I took my hands off the door, the entire door casing came down, and we were swept in a wave toward our living room. We made it up the stairs, and when the eye came over us, we fled to my best friend's house. God saved us, but our marriage did not survive for much longer. For me, Katrina changed my mindset about what was important, and it really upped my desire to be helpful. Suddenly, the material things weren't near as important. As a former teacher, I also recognize the need for children to get involved in giving and helping so they will turn into adults with the same mindset. The blessings my team and I receive from Comeback Coolers are far greater than what seems fair. I'm constantly given new friends, stories of impact, and a whole lot of love. Really, the gifts we give are returned in the form of tremendous love and God shows up in a big way each and every time. In his book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey asserts that most people are deeply scripted in a scarcity mentality. They see life as having only so much - as if there's only one pie out there. If someone were to get a big piece of the pie, there is less for everyone else. This kind of stinking thinking causes us to hold off, and pull back. It stunts possibility and growth, and negatively affects our performance and peace. Thank God for the flip side - the abundance mentality that is rooted in a deep sense of security realizing that there's more than enough. It sees possibility, opportunity and opens the door to options, creativity, gratitude, and growth. This episode explores these two frames of thought and action. Is your life balanced? Do you believe balance is possible? There's been a lot in my inbox and social media feeds about balance. Sharings about how it is not possible. It is unrealistic and unreasonable to even expect that you can have balance in your life. They are solid impassioned arguments that balance is BS. Well, I put these impassioned statements in the same category with: "New Year's resolutions are a waste of time!" or "It's hard and expensive to eat healthily." or "Diets don't work because the weight loss doesn't last!" The arguments are strong and stated as fact that you can hang your hat on, but really they are position statements coming from individuals that haven't been able to attain or sustain these elements. So they say they are not real or possible. Well, in various episodes of the Faith Applied podcast, we'll explore all those statements - but in this episode, we talk about balance from a position that doesn't embrace the limiting belief that it is not real. Many fitness experts say the pushup is like the perfect resistance exercise. Most people spend most of their lives doing the same things day after day after day. While habits can help productivity, and routine can bring comfort and convenience, if we don't venture out and try new things, we can stagnate and miss some of the beauty, excitement, and growth that exists outside of our comfort zone. Consider this: children develop at a fast pace partly because they regularly try things they have never done before. Every day we ask children to face a fear, to reach a new boundary, to try a new food, to try a new activity – to explore, learn and grow. We encourage children to try new things but rarely do the same. What happens to that curiosity as we age? Why do we let ourselves get in the way from exploring and testing and trying and growing? When was the last time you tried something new? Do you bad talk about yourself to yourself? ANTs (Automatic Negative Thoughts) are negative statements, defeating self-pronouncements that eat you up and tear you down. Sometimes we don’t notice them. Other times we overlook them. What's worse is that in at some level we tacitly believe them. ANTs and negative self-talk, like the little insect cause damage. They multiply, and piece by piece break down the favor and carry off the fruit that God has given to you. As a man thinketh so is he. ANTs, persistent destructive thoughts, they've got to go! US adults check their smartphones between 80 and 150 times per day. Cell phone separation anxiety is a real thing, and many would go periods without chocolate, talking, or intercourse before going one day without their phone. How connected are you to your smartphone? Smartphones are super helpful, significant parts of our lives, but like anything used inappropriately or in excess, this tool can become a trap. Live long enough, and periods chocked full of challenges will come. Times when we get close to our ‘tipping point’ and we turn to something…some action…or someone. Stress begs for release and that call rarely goes unanswered. An honest look at our habits, how we spend our time/money, and the things we take in (food, drink or other substances, people etc.) shows the means we take to get relief. Some methods of relief bring help and healing. Others bring harm. What kind do you choose and use? God made our bodies to move. It's also pretty well known that exercise does a body good, yet four out of five United States adults do not get adequate physical activity to improve or maintain health. Here’s the thing about the past – we all have one. And – not everything back there is sunshiny and rainbows. Some looks back reveal dreary times. Past pains, shame or regrets that can be burdensome. We can’t change the pictures of our past, but we can adjust the frame in which they are viewed. The Faith Applied podcast is about forward movement and growth. To start this podcast, I was led to focus this first episode on how not to stop – how to stick to what you start. Show notes with time stamps: 01:12 This episode is for individuals who at some time or another haveset a goal, a good goal. Something that you want to fix in your life that needs fixing. Something you want to uplift or improve. You are excited. You get started and are cooking with steam. You go for awhile and then all of a sudden something shifts and you stop. Then sometime later you start again, and you stop again and thus begins a start-stop cycle that I call startitis. 01:45 – Maybe you’ve had this experience related to nutrition or trying to lose weight… 03:00 – Or perhaps, you’ve lived the the same song with a different tune and instead of starting and stopping eating well, the start/stop relates to exercise. 03:50 Or perchance your startitis doesn't connect with physical wellness – it impacts your spiritual wellbeing. You desire a closer walk with Jesus and want to spend more time in God’s Word. You start regular personal study with a plan to complete the bible and fall off somewhere in Leviticus… 05:00 Can any of you relate to any of this? I can tell you with all honesty and sincerity that I can. We are not alone. We all have some area(s) where we start off on a path the better, but stop and cycle through a pattern that is active but goes nowhere. 08:07 We fall off the wagon so many times we refuse to try again. We know the truth that ‘he who Christ has set free is free indeed’, but we continue to walk around in bondage to behaviors that hold us back. 09:12 Permanent positive change. Is possible! It may not be easy, but it is possible. Let’s dig into three helps to stick to what we start. 10:29 Start small. Small changes are more sustainable. Starting small and going steady builds self-efficacy, protects our progress, and delights the Lord. 19:08 Find your fit. If we repeated try to make a positive change, and keep falling of that wagon - wagon, perhaps the wagon ain’t ours to ride. Don’t jump on the bandwagon of what is popular. Examine thyself so you can change yourself. Find and flourish in your path to better. 24:39 The most powerful tip to help you stick with what you start doesn’t deal with what or how - it looks at why…your motivation to start.
