New coaching clients often share they don't know how to hire another consultant. They say things like,  "I don't know how to find someone that knows all the things I know and who can work with clients in all the ways I work with them."   The truth is, they are right. Most people who have all of their capabilities alreay have their own business or are running an organization. They are not available for hire and if they were it would likely be too expensive to have them on your team.   When you do a lot of types of work for different types and sizes of organizations, hiring decisions feel overwhelming because there's no clarity on the exact skills or expertise needed.   The solution is to focus on positioning your buisness away from being a generalist. Once you specialize by what you do and/or niche by the organizations you serve, it simplifies everything in your business including hiring.   CASE STUDY: Using examples from fundraising, I cover how targeting particular services or clients can facilitate easier hiring, more efficient team building, and ultimately, business growth

As entrepreneurs, we're like special unicorns that usually have a lot of experience and can do multiple things. But having a unicorn business can be exhausting for us and confusing for potential clients. Maybe you feel overwhelmed by the multiple offers and products or services that you offer. Or you might struggle to market all of them at the same time. You almost definitely could be facing challenges keeping track of the latest developments in your wide market. It may be time to narrow your specialization and niche down.  I'm excited to dive deeper into this conversation with our guest Natalie Eckdahl. Natalie launched the Biz Chix podcast back in 2014, and she has been serving women entrepreneurs ever since. Her company, Biz Chix, Inc, helps service entrepreneurs build enduring, profitable, and sustainable businesses. She's the creator of the $ix Figures Lab, a year long group coaching program for women service-based business owners. By providing strategy, coaching, accountability, and community, Natalie helps these women grow and scale a profitable business.  But what exactly is specializing and having a niche? Well, in Natalie's words, “We can specialize by the work we do, the type of work we do, we niche by who we do it for.”  “But if you're trying to build a business that will scale, the first place you need to start is with positioning, and that involves some experimenting to figure out where you're going to put yourself in the marketplace.” - Natalie Eckdahl  Why should we specialize and niche? What are the benefits? Here are three things Natalie talks about more in this episode:  It informs all your business decisions from investments, hiring, and goal setting  You become more of an expert and are immediately more referable  You get to have an “automatic yes business”    But what are the challenges of specializing and niching? There must be a mindset shift. It takes time (even up to a year) to have only your new niche or specialty clients. Letting go of former investments and sunk costs. Repelling potential clients and projects that are no longer your specialty. Natalie tells us how to deal with these challenges and make the best of this transition period.  “I want to help people build a business that will be enduring. So it needs to be enjoyable, profitable, and sustainable. If it's not all three, they're not going to stick with it.” - Natalie Eckdahl  This is an easier process when you're being guided through it, and when you have a community of people around you who are also doing the exact same thing, which is exactly what her coaching program, $ix Figures Lab, offers. We learn what sets it apart from others in the market, from a solid community of entrepreneurs, business resources, and trainings you can access at any time, guided goal setting and check-ins, and easy access to Natalie herself.  Listen in to hear all Natalie has to say about specializing and niching down and to learn how you can apply it to your own business.  Connect with Natalie Eckdahl:  Website  BizChix Podcast  $ix Figures Lab  LinkedIn  Facebook  Instagram  Learn more about your ad choices. It's our third episode of 2023 and to counter any recent effects of ‘Blue Monday', as ever, it's my aim to offer some inspiration! So, this week on the podcast, I'm fully focused on my top five, most recently impactful reads, for those seeking empowerment, increased productivity levels and improved communication and leadership skills.    These books have truly influenced my approach; both internally at THC Primary Care as a business leader, and in the way I collaborate with the networks and teams within my client-facing portfolio. Each of them has remained an enduring and key reference point when it comes to:    Growing my business  Nurturing and empowering staff   Continually striving to communicate well  Recognising the importance of self-awareness, manifestation, visualisation and remaining positive  Adapting and adopting different approaches to prioritisation, organisation of time and task management Writing down goals, ideas, and giving your ‘second brain' the stimulation and the respect it deserves Maintaining consistency And finally…. why taking a break from social media might be a good thing….    So, in no particular order, the books that you need in your life right now are:    Twelve And A Half by Gary Vaynerchuk found here  Manifest by Roxie Nafousi found here  Hyperfocus by Chris Bailey found here  Building A Second Brain by Tiago Forte found here  The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy found here    Mentions in this episode     BoH podcast #131 Gratitude & Affirmations as a Business Strategy with Natalie Eckdahl  BoH podcast #219 Seeing Beyond What Your Organisation Does with Dr Owen Williams  Asana task management system  Good Notes app  K Digital Studio digital planner    Work with me        I'm Tara Humphrey and I'm the founder of THC Primary Care, a leading healthcare consultancy. “Probably 20% of your clients are causing 80% of the problems.” -Natalie Eckdahl   Finding your bookkeeping niche is hard. But not as hard as finding the number of clients needed to make a low-price business successful. Low pricing may seem like the way to gain many clients fast. But in reality, this kind of business model is working against you.   When you find your niche, it will be because it is something you are passionate about, something you can become an expert in, because you care about it. It is time to stop charging for a basic general service, and start charging for what your knowledge, expertise and experience are truly worth.   In part two, Natalie Eckdahl, founder of BizChix, host of the longest-running female entrepreneur podcast and voted one of the top women in business to listen to, speaks to the need to let go of mindsets and clients that are holding you back, finding your niche, and her upcoming virtual talk at The Successful Bookkeeper Summit.   If you are struggling, as an aimless generalist, taking every client you can for fear of losing business, this is the episode to get you headed in the right direction! Not just in terms of feeling like an imposter in the workplace, but being scared to price at equal value, or paying themselves less to not upset male colleagues or partners.   Women on average price themselves 28% lower than their male peers.
