As we head towards Easter yet again, perhaps it's time to think about – well, what makes us so special, that God would do this Easter thing for us? An Intimate Knowledge It's always something special to me, that time of the year we call Easter. So we are going to carry it on a little longer this week in the Easter story. This is my 17th Easter since I became a Christian. And it just never ceases to amaze me what the Easter story is all about. It's a good time for us to think about what God was up to. I mean, Christmas seems like it was just a few weeks ago. Hey, you know, that's when we celebrate the birth of Jesus, the whole baby in the manger thing; Jesus becoming a man. But Easter for Jesus didn't happen just a few months after Christmas. Easter for Jesus happened about 33 years later during the Passover celebration. It was the time when Israel celebrated the freedom that they had out of slavery. They'd been slaves in Egypt for a few centuries; God had sent Moses to tell Pharaoh to let His people go and God sent a whole bunch of plagues on the nation of Egypt. And the last plague, the most powerful plague, was the first born of every Egyptian family, their animals as well, the firstborn was killed by God and that ultimately convinced Pharaoh to let God's people go. But it didn't happen to the Israelites. You see, they were slaves in Egypt and God said to them, ‘Look, you get a lamb and you slay that lamb, and you put that lamb's blood on the top of your door frame and the angel of death will pass over your house and this plague upon Egypt won't befall your house. And so the Passover celebration was the celebration of the freedom that Israel received from slavery by the shedding of the blood of the lamb. And that of course is what Easter is all about. So here Jesus was in His early 30's and it's the Passover celebration and it's the time that we remember Jesus not only came to earth as a man, He not only walked through every trial and temptation that you and I do, He not only healed the sick and cast out demons and preached with power, He laid down His life for you and for me. He died for us! Now we will look at the how and why of that, but for me, Easter begins long, long before that. You look at God and you say, "Well, why did you go to such an extreme? What was this all about – you sending your Son, your only Son Jesus, your beloved and you let Him be spat upon and beaten and crucified?" Easter is God saying to us that you and I are "to die for". Now the term ‘to die for' is a contemporary term. If you're not aware it's SMS shorthand; you know, the kids as they send the SMS messages to one another often put the word "to die for" They don't write it out in full, they write it as 2di4 and it's shorthand for something that you just have to have. A girl might send an SMS to a girlfriend of hers and talk about a boy, say, "He was 2di4". A boy might look at a car or a motorbike and say, "That car or that motorbike is 2di4". Something that's ‘to die for' is something that you just have to have. And so that's why we're talking about it right now because that's what Easter's about. And this term "to die for" started me thinking, God was prepared to send His son "to die for" you and me. You and I, in His eyes, in His heart, we are "to die for". There's a beautiful Psalm. You may have heard me talk about this Psalm before. We're going to spend today looking at this Psalm. If you have a Bible grab it, open it up at Psalm 139 because Psalm 139 is a Psalm that I guess lays the foundations of Easter for me. It lays the foundations of "to die for". We're going to unpack this whole idea and have a look at what was going on in the Father's great and mighty heart. What was He thinking? How was He thinking about you and Me when He hatched Easter. Easter's a hard thing to get our hearts around; it's a hard thing to get our minds around, but Psalm 139 is a great place to start. Psalm 139 tells us just what was going on in God's heart. What drove God towards this amazing plan that we now call Easter? Let's have a read. If you have a Bible open it up. Psalm 139. We'll just look at verses 1-12 to begin with. This is what it says: Lord, you searched me and you know me. You know me when I sit down, you know when I rise up, you know my thoughts from a long, long way off. You discern my going in and my lying down; you're familiar with all my ways. Before even a word is on my tongue you already know it completely, Lord. You hem me in; behind me, in front of me, you laid your hands upon me. Such knowledge is just too wonderful for me. It's too lofty for me to attain. Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go to the heavens you're there. If I make my bed in the depths of hell you're still there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, If I settle on the farthest side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand me fast. If I say, surely the darkness will hide me and the light will become night around me, even the darkness isn't dark to you. The night will shine like day because darkness is like light to you. Isn't it a beautiful Psalm. They're not just words. This man who wrote the Psalm is pouring out his heart about how wonderful God is. And the three things that jump out at me in this short passages, the first few verse of Psalm 139: firstly how intimately God knows us. "Lord, you've searched me, you know me. You know when I sit down, you know when I get up, you know when I go out, you know when I lie down, you know what I'm thinking. Even before I say a word you know what words are going to be on my lips. Lord you know me." God knows us intimately. Sometimes Easter feels a little bit like a retailing phenomenon. You know, lets go buy chocolate eggs, have a long weekend, have a rest. And if God is a busy God and He doesn't have time for us then He doesn't love us. But that isn't who God is. He knows you and He knows me, everything we're thinking, everything we're doing, everything we're hoping for, everything we're for hurting for … God knows us. And secondly, He's on this journey with us. "Lord you hem me in: you're behind me, your in front of me, you've laid your hands upon me." It's interesting you know, when this was written all the other God's that all the other nations worshipped lived in static places. They lived in temples, on hilltops and people went up to the hills to worship them in their temples. But this God whom the Psalmist is writing about, this God spent 40 years on a journey in the wilderness with His people Israel. You can read some more about it in the Book of Exodus. This God sent up home amongst His people in the temple in Jerusalem when they finally crossed over into the Promised Land. This God has a heart to be with His people. It's His heart's cry. We hear it time and time and again from the beginning of the Bible, way back in the Old Testament, to almost the end. In the second last chapter of the Book of Revelation. God over and over says this: ‘I will be your God and you will be My people. And I will make my dwelling place among you'. God is a God who is on this journey with us. Even in hell, even in heaven, even if we go to the farthest part of the world, even there God is with us. His presence, His face – that's literally what the Hebrew means – His face is there. Even when it falls dark, surely the darkness will hide me and the light will become like night around me. But God, even in the darkness it won't be dark to you. The light will shine like the day for darkness is as light to you. God is in those dark places and He's not some distant God. This is not some unmoved mover. You know, someone who just doesn't feel for us. This God is a God who knows us – wonderfully, and beautifully and intimately – and He's on the journey with us. And I know that's hard for us to fathom. There are billions of people who've lived down through the ages and He knows each one of us more and more intimately than we can ever imagine. That's what God's like. He knows each one of us like that. And that for me sets the scene for Easter. He was There We're taking a look today at what was going on in God's heart. What was He thinking when He was dreaming up this whole Easter thing? It's an amazing plan. God sends His Son to earth to be beaten and spat upon and crucified, to die on that brutal Cross at the hands of men. Psalm 139, which is the Psalm we were looking at the break, tells us about His motivations behind Easter. It doesn't talk specifically about Easter, but it tells us what God's heart is for us. And we just had a look at the first part of that Psalm to show us that God knows us intimately, He's on every step of the journey with us. And that's huge … to know that God is walking every step of the way with us. There is nowhere we can go and be alone or apart from Him, even in heaven or hell. But how is it that He knows us this well? I mean, sometimes we don't even know ourselves, do we. We can't explain why we do what we do or how we react to something or why we did that. You and I are pretty complex creatures. There's so many layers to who we are. Some things are so deep inside us, we can't really understand them or talk about them ourselves. So how does God know? Well the writer of the Psalm goes on to explain that. Let's have a read now of Psalm 139 going on to verse 13 to 16. If you have a Bible, grab it. This is what it says: For God, you created my innermost being. You knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you for I'm fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful, I know that so well. My frame wasn't hidden from you when I was made in secret, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days were ordained for me, they were written in your book even before one of them came into being. That's one of the most precious passages in the Bible to me. As I look back on my life, and you too, there's a mixture of wonderful and desperate; beautiful and ugly. We've both done some brilliant things and we've done some really stupid things. There are great heights and there are dark valleys. But when you and I were conceived, God was there. My innermost parts – who I am; your innermost parts – who you are. A DNA blueprint – the way that we look and sound and all our gifts and abilities and strengths and weaknesses – all that, those layers of complexity He created in our innermost being. He knit you and me together in our mothers wombs. Imagine you and I have been handcrafted by God. Distinctive, one of a kind, completely, utterly, amazingly, beautifully, wondrously made. Separated and different from any other person who has ever lived or any other person who will ever live. Intricately woven together, each strand of DNA laid down according to God's plan. But not only that, not only who we are, but everything that would ever happen to us. Look at it again. ‘All the days that were ordained for me, they were written in your book before one of them came into being.' I so despair when I meet people who waste away their lives worrying and complaining about their lot. Yes, some people seem to have better lives than others. Some people seem to get all the breaks and the benefits and the blessing and other people seem to get handed more difficult lives – painful lives. A bit like Jesus; people like the Apostle Paul. But that's all part of God's plan. There's a beautiful poem, you might have heard it once before and it goes something like this: My life is but a weaving between my Lord and me.I cannot choose the colours as He weaveth steadily, Sometimes He chooses dark threads and I in foolish pride Forget He sees the upper and I the underside. Not till the loom is silent and the shuttles cease to fly Shall God unroll the canvas and explain the reasons why The dark threads were as needful in the weaver's skilful hand As the threads of gold and silver in the pattern He hath planned. You and I are what He made us to be. We're living the lives He planned for us, lives He always knew that we'd live. Nothing is a surprise to God. And when we put our faith in Him we experience the most incredible joy. I was having lunch recently with a women who is well into her 70's now, whose husband, quite a few years back, committed suicide. How devastating would that have been. But she put her faith in Christ. She spent time in God's Word and she has this quiet joy and a beautiful countenance about her. She could have lived the rest of her life bitter, but no, she's live it in Christ. And when we see the beauty of God's plan, handcrafted as we are by Him to live the life that He laid out before time began, we get some sense of what was going on in His heart when He came up with this plan for Easter. Because we can only live the life He has planned if we live it with Him. We have a basic problem, that problem is called "sin". It's the things that we've done wrong that keeps us away from Him. And that's what Easter's about. We're going to look at that shortly. That's Huge … As we continue to look back on Easter, one of the things that I hope we'll ponder is the reaction of the writer, the Psalmist, the person who wrote Psalm 139 that we've been looking at today. There's a sense of awe and wonder as He ponders how intimately God knows Him, how faithfully God hangs in there with Him, and the wonder of God's craftsmanship and plan. Look again at what the Psalmist writes in verse 6: Such knowledge is too high for me, it is so high I can't attain it. Verse 14: I praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works, oh God, that I know very well. Verse 17: How weighty are your thoughts oh God, how vast is the sum of them. I try and count them but they're more than the sand on the beach. I come to the end and I'm still with You. Easter is the time when God sent His Son to die for us, to solve this basic problem of humanity that we have. A problem that God calls "sin". And I know, "sin" used to sound like such an old-fashioned, fuddy-duddy word to me too, but it is the problem of humanity. And we've been looking at that over the past few weeks. But the thing that oozes out of this Psalm for me – that speaks so much about God's motivation behind Easter – is His incredible love. We will never ever be able to wrap our minds and hearts around God's love completely. We'll never, ever be able to understand how God feels about us. God says in His Word that one day we'll stand before Him and all things will be revealed. I can't imagine … I just can't imagine looking at God; I can't imagine looking on the face of Jesus; I can't imagine knowing and understanding fully how much He loves us. And when He created you and when He created me individually and wondrously and perfectly handcrafted you and me – intricately woven together in our mother's womb – that was the most amazing act of grace because He knew when He did that, that you and I would reject Him. He always knew that. He always knew that to bring us back to Him, to save us from ourselves, to save us from what we deserve – which is an eternity without Him – He'd have to send Jesus to die on that Cross for you and me. No if's, no but's, no maybe's – you and I, our sin, our rebellion are no surprise to God. He always knew and He still created us. He still allowed us to be born and He still planned every day of our lives, even before any of those days existed at all. That blows me away. No wonder the Psalmist writes: How weighty are your thoughts to me oh God, how vast is the sum of them. I try and count them but they're more than the grains of sand on the beach. Because behind Easter is this amazing act of grace. Not just that Jesus came to suffer and die for our failure but that God always knew that by creating us He would have to do that. And yet He created us anyway. Could I encourage you never ever put Easter in some measured little box; never ever to consign Easter to some head knowledge thing, but like the Psalmist be blown away by God's love. Every breathe you take, every step, every hilltop, every valley, every twist, every turn, everything that we have to suffer and bare – live it in this awe and wonder of who God is and how much He loves you in Jesus. Life takes on a completely new meaning and vibrancy and colour. Doesn't matter how much we have to suffer, how much we have to weep, how many tears we cry, we know that God has a plan and He always, and God was there when you were handcrafted by Him in your mother's womb. God always had a plan for you to be who you are, for you to live the life that He's given you and for you to have a life through the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus. And for you and me to walk in wonder and awe of the completely unattainable knowledge of His love for us in Jesus Christ. We've been looking at that over the last few weeks and we've seen how His love plays itself out on the Cross. But right now, unless we are completely lost in the wonder of His plan and His love, you know what, I think Easter just becomes another long weekend, doesn't it? Listen to the Psalmist: God I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are so wonderful that I know full well. My frame wasn't hidden from you when I was made in that secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days that were ordained, they were already written in Your book before any of them as yet came into being. How precious to me are your thoughts oh God, how vast is the sum of them. Were I to count them, they'd outnumber all the grains of sand on the earth. When I awake I'm still with you. You see, you and I are "to die for" in God's sight. God created us. He knew that we'd rebel, He loved us and He knew that His Son would have to come and die for you and for me. That, my friend, is what Easter is about. Because your rejection of God, my rejection of God severed the perfect relationship that we can have with God. And God is good, He's righteous, He's perfect. Ultimately when we reject Him, when we sin, when we turn against Him, when we do what we know is wrong, somebody has to pay that price. Now, if you look at our law and our judges, they don't work perfectly, but if we do something wrong, someone has to pay the price. That principle of justice comes from the very nature of God. God is a just God and He's a loving God and God's justice and His love were in conflict. Justice demanded that we be punished, love demanded that we be forgiven. On the Cross they come together, on the Cross they merge. Through the death of Jesus the demands of justice are met and the demands of God's love to set us free, to have a new life, are met as well. Friend, Easter is about the central devastating sickness of humanity. Easter is about setting you and me free from our sin to give us a new life. That's what it's all about. That's why we celebrate Easter. The chocolates are nice, the long weekend is nice, the church services are nice for those who go but bottom line God sacrificed His Son so that you and I could have an eternal relationship with Him. It's relationship that begins the moment we put our faith in Jesus Christ. Let's call our sin for what it is – it is sin. And friend, as much as we look in the mirror and we see wrinkles and warts and failures and bad things, God knows those, that's why He sent His Son Jesus to die on a Cross for you and for me, and that my friend, is Easter. If you have never put your trust in Jesus, then you do not know the freedom of God's forgiveness. The moment we believe that Jesus died to pay for our sin and through His death we're forgiven by God, the moment we accept that and believe that my friend, we are set free to live a new life. That's why Jesus rose again – to give us a new life. And that new life begins here and now. That is Easter.
We are kicking off 2025 and the first podcast of the year with a focus on The Experience Mindset, Changing The Way You Think About Growth, a book by Tiffani Bova. This is a read that several of us here at Nolan Consulting Group really enjoyed, it was part of an internal Book Club and we thought it was worthwhile to bring to the podcast table as an entry point for 2025. The book examines how Customer Experience (CX) and Employee Experience (EX) are intricately intertwined and interdependent - and it's those companies that recognize this and work to find success in both areas that see true growth and success. From stories of Chipotle and the Ritz Carlton to sticking data points from organizational research , it hits home the importance of how we approach and implement new strategies and process in the year to come.

I speak with an eyewitness to a modern revival in Wilmore, Kentucky, a spiritual event that made national news. Was it a hoax? Group hysteria? Or was this a genuine spiritual encounter? Karla Jay tells us what she heard and saw on her visit to Asbury University. Anthony Kirk, a transgender pastor at a Friend's Church shares a Bible passage that has been central to his spiritual and gender journey. Peterson Toscano 00:49 I am Peterson Toscano. This is the sixth episode of Quakers Today, a project of Friends Publishing Corporation. This first season of Quakers Today has been sponsored by Quaker Voluntary Service. Peterson Toscano 01:05 Karla Jay serves as the global ministries coordinator for Friends United Meeting or fu M. Her husband, Michael Jay,is the pastor of Rayville Friends Church. Karla has been on the pastoral team at Iglesia Amigos de Indianapolis, where her father Carlos Moran is pastor. Like many people, it was online that she first learned about the Asbury revival. Karla Jay 01:30 I just thought, oh, you know, these are people that probably want attention or just want to say that you know, the spirit is being poured over them. Peterson Toscano 01:40 On February 8 2023, after an on campus chapel service, a group of Asbury students decided to stay in the chapel to pray and sing. For the next two weeks students, community members and visitors from around the USA attended impromptu worship services. During that time classes were suspended online and in the media, people called it an outpouring of the Holy Spirit or the Asbury revival. According to Inside Higher Ed, "Asbury is part of the Wesleyan theological tradition, which emphasizes transformational encounters with the Holy Spirit." This year during the two weeks of nearly constant prayer and worship, over 50,000 visitors joined the students. Karla Jay was not interested in traveling the three hours to the Asbury campus. But her sister, who Karla doesn't get to see often, proposed they meet up and visit together. Karla shared with me what she saw and heard. And she reflects on what revival means to her. Karla Jay 02:47 It wasn't hard to find; the campus is not that big. We found it, and we saw that it will be a while before we got in. There was maybe 2000 people outside at the time we went there. Being already suspicious of what was happening, I was looking for like, are there any other Latinos? Are there other Black people here, you know, people that are different from regular white people? Or is this just like a white people movement? There was some other Latinos maybe not as many as I would have liked there to be. But there were some other Latinos in the crowd. The majority of the crowd was white. Karla Jay 03:28 We waited about 45 minutes to get in. And in the meantime, an usher came in. He asked us, What did we need? And what were we doing there? Like, did we come for anything in particular? And we said, we just came to feel the presence and to be here. He said, Are there any needs that you have that you would like me to pray for you? And we said just that we feel the presence that he prayed for us, that we may feel the presence and that we may be blessed? Karla Jay 04:03 It was just very quiet, even though there was music being played in the background. The worship leaders weren't not really leading people into worship. They were there. There was background music, people were praying, some people were singing to the music that was being played. Some people, if they felt like it, they went up and gave testimony. People were allowed to go in and out as they felt led. It almost felt like in a programed Meeting for Worship with background music. It wasn't organized. It was spontaneous. Karla Jay 04:44 We were there for about an hour and a half. And I felt like we had only been there for 15 minutes. I didn't feel bored or anxious then. I usually feel that in a lot of church meetings, I'm bored. I'm anxious that I want to leave. I believe I've already sang these hymns before. I probably already heard that sermon before, whether the person that I'm listening to is new, but I probably already heard the sermon in some way or another. I did not feel that at Asbury. I just felt like there was peace there. And that whatever was happening, a genuine experience for most of the people there. Karla Jay 05:26 Growing up Evangelical and Holiness, I did see adults making a plea for a revival to happen. But I'd never seen them asking for repentance or turning around. The church has been asking for revival to happen. But at the same time, I don't see many leaders of the church recognizing the sins that the church has been a part of . And some of that sin has to do with issues of justice. What I saw in Asbury is that this movement, or it might be too soon to call it revival, but this outpouring happen in very young people. I mean, these are college kids, they're not older than I don't know, twenty-three. They don't have any influence. They don't have any positions of power. This spontaneous worship happened among them. It didn't happen and an older generation that is not recognizing the sins and you know, like, the younger generation, it's been more honest about the injustice that is happening in this country. That might have something to do with you know, recognizing that not everyone in this country has the same justice and being able to recognize that and be able to say we are going to make a difference. I think that in itself is the movement of the Holy Spirit. God is not going to do an outpouring, and people that are not repenting and calling for justice in this country. If they're not calling against racism, if they're not calling against misogyny, the Holy Spirit is not going to move in that. Our relationship with God also has to do with a relationship with others around us and how we seek justice for our brothers and sisters. Anthony Kirk 07:48 My journey with religion and spirituality has been completely intertwined. In my relationship with my gender identity and coming out as transgender. My name is Anthony Kirk, I use he/him pronouns. I live in Klamath Falls, Oregon, and I am currently the pastor of Klamath Falls friends church. Anthony Kirk 08:18 There's actually a Psalm that has really helped me. I reflect on it a lot. I use it for Transgender Day of Visibility events, and I share it with those who are exploring their identity, exploring their gender, their sexuality, and wondering, Well, where do I fit? The scripture that I use comes from Psalm 139, verses 13 through 16, from the New Revised Standard Version Anthony Kirk 08:52 For It was you who formed my inward parts, you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I'm fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works, that I know very well. My frame was not hidden from you. When I was being made in secret. Intricately woven in the depths of the earth, your eyes beheld my unformed substance. In your books were written all the days that were formed for me when none of them as yet existed. And it's the beautiful reminder that God knew us since our conception, as we were formed, God knew us and loved us and created us long before society put labels on us and made assumptions. And that's brought so much comfort to me and so many people in my life. Peterson Toscano 09:55 That was Anthony Kirk, in an excerpt from the QuakerSpeak Video Made in the Image of God, a Transgender Pastor shares Psalm 139. You will find the full video and other QuakerSpeak videos at the QuakerSpeak channel on YouTube, or visit Quakerspeak.com. Peterson Toscano 10:12 Quaker Thomas Kelly Life from the Center is a free online pamphlet that includes excerpts from two of Kelly's books, Testament of Devotion, and The Eternal Promise. While reading Kelly's writing, Kathleen B. Wilson started copying excerpts verbatim and arranging sentences and phrases. The format helped her savor each word and phrase Alissa Vanderbark, a Quaker Voluntary Service fellow, and Jonah Sutton-Morse, a member of Concord Monthly Meeting in New Hampshire. Join us to read passages from the pamphlet. Alissa Vanderbark 10:56 I have no interest in silence as a form. But I know that devotion and dedication arise in the deep communing of the heart, in dwelling with a silence in the center of our being in periods of relaxed listening and expectancy. The silence within us seems to merge with a creative silence within the heart of God. And we hear eternity's whispers, and we become miracles of eternity, breaking into time, live a listening life. Order your outward life, so that nothing drowns out the listening. Jonah Sutton-Morse 11:39 The second spring of hope, business, we simple humble people can bear the seed of hope. No religious dictator will save the world, no giant figure of heroic size, will stalk across the stage of history today as a new messiah. But in simple, humble, imperfect person, like you and me, wells up the spring of hope. We have this treasure of the seed in the earthen vessels, very earthen vessels, yield yourselves to the growth of the seed within you. In these our days of suffering. Sow yourselves into the furrows of the world's pain and hope will grow and rise. Be not overcome by the imposing forces of evil and of might. Be of good cheer as Jesus I have overcome the world. Peterson Toscano 12:59 That was Alissa Vanderbark and Jonah Sutton Morse reading excerpts from the free online pamphlet Quaker Thomas Kelly Life from the Center. You can read the full version and the introduction written by Kathleen B. Wilson at the website QuakerThomasKelly.org. And you can connect with Quakers like Jonah at the Society of Friends Discord group. I will have links for you in our show notes. Peterson Toscano 13:29 Thank you for listening to Quakers Today. This podcast is written and produced by me Peterson Toscano. I receive a lot of assistance and input from the Friends Journal staff Gabe, Gail, Martin, and Ron Thank you Friends. Peterson Toscano 13:42 For articles and blog posts related to this episode visit FriendsJournal.org. Music on today's show comes from Epidemic Sound. This is the end of season one. But fear not Friends Publishing Corporation has renewed this show for another season. I will continue to produce it with the possibility of a co-host. We will premiere Season Two on June 13th 2023. Peterson Toscano 14:10 Season One of Quakers Today was sponsored by Quaker Voluntary Service. Thank you so much. QVS is the only organization in the United States dedicated solely to the spiritual and vocational needs of young adult friends and seekers. If you have a comment or suggestion for this podcast or just want to say hi, you can email me podcast@friendsjournal.org. Stick around after the closing to hear voicemails from listeners who share their daily spiritual practices. Thank you Friend. I look forward to spending more time with you soon Peterson Toscano 15:15 In a moment, you will hear voicemails from listeners about their daily spiritual practices. But first, I want to share with you the question for our June episode, and it is a question about leaders and leadership. The world is changing rapidly. And these include changes to how we view our leaders in the political realm and religious spaces. With so many people working remotely, even the relationships between managers and workers have changed. So here's our question for you to consider. What do you expect and need in a leader? This could be a leader on the job, in a religious space, in your community, or in the political world? What do you expect and need in a leader? I would love to hear and share your thoughts. Leave a voice memo with your name and the town where you live. The number to call is 317 Quakers. That's 317.7825377. 317 Plus one if you're calling from outside the USA. You can also send an email. I have these contact details in our show notes over at QuakersToday.org. Now we hear answers to the question what is a daily practice that clears your head and studies you for the day Sunny 16:36 I'm Sunny in Virginia. I attend Richmond Friends Meeting. And thank you for the query. It helped me think through what it is that starts my day. After reading today books in the luxury of my bed without hot coffee and a dog, I go for movement in the fresh air. This morning I swept the desk with a sturdy broom while the pollen was still damp so the mask wasn't needed. Some mornings I'd like to scoop leaves or rake or follow the dog around the meadow. But breathing and moving awakens my body and pulls things together. I add a little yoga, maybe a hot shower, but the thing is the motion of leaving my body with the breath that gathers my mind, body and spirit into the center. And there I can face today. Thank you for that query again. I'm gonna watch myself with more consciousness but not obsession. 17:33 Sharlee from Allentown Pennsylvania, I worship at the Lehigh Valley Friends Meeting. So the daily practice that clears my head and steady for the day is praying a prayer a member of my meeting shared with me. She was the convener of a group that met to walk with me during a time of aa upsetting spiritual doubt. And the prayer is God most high and glorious, come into the shadows of my heart. Give me a generous spirit and let me always live in the light of your love. Thank you goodbye.

In this podcast episode, Nicole O'Byrne speaks with Andrew Stobo Sniderman and Douglas Sanderson about their book, Valley of the Birdtail: An Indian Reserve, a White Town, and the Road to Reconciliation published by HarperCollins Canada in 2022. Valley of the Birdtail was awarded the OLA Evergreen award in 2023. The book weaves together the multi-generational stories of Indigenous and non-Indigenous families to depict a larger picture of Canada's history. Looking to the town of Rossburn and the Waywayseecappo Indian reserve, the authors showcase the different realities of the people living in these communities, particularly the inequality of education and the long-lasting effects of residential schools. Intricately researched, Valley of the Birdtail incorporates legal histories, political analyses, and the personal histories to reflect on the relations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians and ends with a hopeful look to the future. Andrew Adobo Sniderman is a writer, lawyer, and Rhodes Scholar from Montreal. He has written for the New York Times, the Globe and Mail, and Maclean's. His profile of Canada's Truth and Reconciliation Commission on Residential Schools won the award for best print feature of 2011 from the Canadian Association of Journalists. He has also argued before the Supreme Court of Canada, served as the human rights policy advisor to the Canadian minister of foreign affairs, and worked for a judge of South Africa's Constitutional Court. Douglas Sanderson (Amo Binashii) is the Prichard Wilson Chair in Law and Public Policy at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law. He has served as a senior policy advisor to Ontario's attorney general and minister of Indigenous affairs. Sanderson's research areas include Aboriginal and indigenous legal theory, as well as private legal theory. Dr. Sarah Longair unseats European powers' efforts to control the East African coast, through a Kiti Cha Enzi, or Swahili Chair of Power, produced in the 19th century. Intricately decorated with an ivory inlay, a large, wooden throne sits proudly - not in its place of production of Witu, Kenya, but the stores of the British Museum. Kiti cha enzi, or seats of power, were used as thrones by Swahili rulers from the 18th century. Their distinctive form incorporates myriad cultural influences, highlighting the vibrant pre-colonial trading history of the Swahili community, while their symbolic use speaks to shifting patterns of power on the African coast. Produced as Germany and Britain competed for colonial control on the East African coast, this chair is a material symbol of how a small Swahili community resisted European expansion. Its seizure from the Swahili Sultan Fumo Bakari, and subsequent relocation by Admiral Fremantle to the National Maritime Museum, and later British Museum, speaks to our current interests in the colonial origins of museum objects. But it also reveals the complex rivalries between Western imperial pofwers, and how East African leaders exercised their own agency by playing them against each other. PRESENTER: Dr. Sarah Longair, Senior Lecturer in the History of Empire at the University of Lincoln. ART: Kiti Cha Enzi (Swahili Chair of Power), East Africa (19th Century). Superstar vioinist Hilary Hahn joins us to talk about her album ECLIPSE, from Deutsche Grammophon records. A celebration of Hilary's return to the stage (after a year-long sabbatical), ECLIPSE documents her artistic growth during that experience – represented by three wonderful works that speak to Hilary's virtuosity in different ways. Listeners will revel in Hilary's performance of Pablo de Sarasate's Carmen Fantasy (which Hilary had never performed before), and a brilliant rendition of Dvořák's sprightly violin concerto. The centerpiece of the program, however, is the violin concerto by Argentine composer Alberto Ginastera. Intricately layered, sometimes powerful and sometimes almost painfully intimate, Ginastera's concerto is given a spectacular performance from Hilary, running the gamut from fierce virtuosity to glass-like delicacy.

In this converstaion with Mark Poehner (Marco), we cover a few topics such as his experience as a foreigner growing up in Colombia during a time of inmense violence . We also talk about his family dynamics and upbringing and his approach to parenting. We talk as well as his passion to reforestation and conservation of endagered forest species in Colombia. And how everything in life is intricately interconnected. Here is more about him in his own words: "It wasn't until I was in my 50s and read Third Culture Kids, by David C. Pollock and Ruth E. Van Reken, that I understood how growing up in Colombia and going to Colegio Bolívar molded my identity and social adaptation. Like many other CB students and alumni, I am a hybrid of two or more cultures, having entered Colombia at age 5, in January 1961. It was a bewildering introduction to a society at war with itself, with extremes and contrasts between wealth and poverty, ethnic diversity, natural beauty and abundance and the ugliness of the Violencia. My father, who had been born to missionary parents in Pereira, Caldas (1926, prior to the secession of Risaralda), also felt “called” to minister to the poor and downtrodden, so he ventured into the most remote regions, jungles and marginalized neighborhoods, where the refugees settled; and he took me with him. I formed deep bonds with the forests and pueblos of Colombia. I became a “grincolombiano” or “grindio.” On my 17th birthday I left home, Colegio Bolívar and Colombia, to make it on my own. Borrowing my airfare, I went to the USA, where I began working as a farm laborer, a dock worker, and even a janitor at my high school, to subsist. It took four years to afford college, where I felt out of place socially. I worked a few years as a journalist, then turned to teaching, first adults, then children. In my early 30s, in a crisis of identity, I returned to Colombia to explore my national affinity. Teaching some wonderful 4th grade classes at CB, from 1988 to 1991, I realized that I was both Colombian and USAmerican, and that it was my choice to embrace both. During that time I was offered an abandoned farm in upper Pance, above the town and the end of the road. I bought it in February 1989, borrowing from my retirement account. I devoted it to reforestation with native species, and to the conservation of endangered forest species. I learned the hard way, that the idealism of “self-sustained” farms takes 26-hr. workdays; so I kept the project going on my meager teacher budget. Dealing with the violence of my upbringing (frequent fighting in my neighborhood, ongoing disturbances in the countryside and the city), I pursued a different approach to relationships and communication. After marrying and becoming a father, I was given a mentor in “Effective Communication and Relationship Building.” I studied under Selwa Saíd for 17 years, learning how to teach and raise children without coercion, punishment or yelling, and to listen to the intent and desire of others in conflict. I thoroughly changed my approach to teaching and parenting. Now retired, I live between my two countries, between Cali and Central Coast California. Between forestry and surfing. As a hermit in the Farallones de Cali and as a dad on the Monterey Peninsula. As many other CB alumni, I'm a hybrid, a bridge builder, and hopefully a resource for a more peaceful and healthy future." Soundscapes: Wilderness Lodge Christmas Follow along with the show notes below! Want More Here With The Magic? Visit The Website: https://herewiththemagic.com Watch Here: https://www.youtube.com/HereWithTheMagic Connect on social media: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/herewiththemagic Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/herewiththemagic/ ---------- (3:00) A destination in its own right and beloved for decades, Disney's Wilderness Lodge is perhaps the warmest, coziest, and most inviting of the more than two dozen resorts scattered across Walt Disney World. That truth only becomes even more evident at Christmastime. Imagineered to resemble a great lodge, this grand timber-clad hideaway promises fire-lit evenings, magnificent details, and a welcome respite from the cold…real or imagined. Nestled among a forest of towering pines, the lodge seems an extension of the wilderness, blending in with the woodland all around. At the entrance, a choir of a cappella carolers carries a cadence of reverence and anticipation, of hope and utmost tranquility. They are setting the tone for the cozy winter scene before us, the silent night in the heart of the wilderness only broken by their vibrato. Here, the entryway portico reveals the first signs of yuletide cheer, but as we move into the atrium beyond, we are irrevocably awestruck by the splendor before us. (4:00) Four columns of bundled logs, representing the four corners of the world, surround a six-story spruce tree that has been commissioned for the holiday season. A vast cathedral with a jaw-dropping centerpiece, the tree stands triumphantly at the heart of the lobby, decorated with curations from the depths of the wilderness. Intricately carved wooden animals, poinsettias, pinecones, and flickering tepees adorn each branch, honoring the natural world that inspires every corner, every moment found within this Magical place. The four striking tepee chandeliers frame the Christmas scene with perfect symmetry, bathing it in a warm glow and serving as a reminder of the native people who revered and cherished every rock, tree, and creature as a gift from the Great Spirit. At the culmination of each year, their celebrations were not to do with prosperity or power, but rather were used as a time of reflection, a time to of pause and of peace and gratitude. (5:45) The hootin' and hollerin' merriment over at Whispering Canyon Café is infectious, lifting our spirits and making us smile involuntarily as watch families roar with laughter at the silly yuletide antics of the cowboys and cowgirls who gallivant around the dining room. The clatter of forks on tin plates and the wafting scent of old-fashioned barbecue are almost enough to divert us from our tour, especially at the prospect of freshly baked cornbread and sweet apple pie. (7:03) The revelry and joy Here are infectious as the mouthwatering aromas. They remind us of holidays at home, gathered together with people we love around tables groaning with delicious food, sharing stories and creating priceless memories. The echoes of those stories come back to us Here, unbidden but profound. They remind us of how important it is to cherish the gift of each moment while it is ours to have and hold, and of the transcendent Magic of the holiday season. (8:41) After that boisterous interlude, we cross the lobby and are reacquainted with the contemplative ardor of this space, now inviting us to rest and be still in the presence of the elements: earth, fire, wind, water. (10:22) To that end, we come across a charming little bridge at the mouth of Silver Creek, a babbling hot spring that pulls the eye outside toward the wandering waterway beyond. It is Here that we notice more festive details to highlight the rustic merriment in the air. Ribbons in patterns of Buffalo plaid and patterned wooden canoes accent wreaths and garland, strung up along the little footbridge and on the wall of windows leading out into the winter twilight. (11:28) All around the Lodge, the holiday nuances shift as we find ourselves moving from one area to the next. The bright red accents found throughout the lobby are joined by their patriotic counterparts as we enter Territory Lounge, a homey little den where friends can gather to share a festive libation and stories of holidays past. (12:22) Here is where the first true notes of those beloved holiday carols greet our ears with glorious song, brightening the spirit of even the Grinchiest traveler. Pull up a chair and enjoy something that tastes of the season… a Hot Toddy or an Irish coffee? Perhaps some piping hot fondue to crowd around? Let it be a balm to the chill that lingers from outside as we spend a moment in this cozy space. (13:49) Let's make our way, now, back into the silent winter's night and away from the echoes of revelry still rising above the chorus of carols in the main lodge. Down the pathway we go, along a wide bridge lit by lanterns. It is still but for the brass symphony of “Good King Wenceslas” and ”Little Drummer Boy.” Where are we headed, you might be wondering? What could possibly extract us from the allure of the main lodge, the cozy merrymaking? (15:11) Upon entry into the rotunda of Boulder Ridge, all our confusions are allayed. Neither as grand nor as imposing as the lobby we just visited, Boulder Ridge is a chamber of timber and stone, a four-story retreat from its busier counterpart Here too, a Christmas tree stands at the center of the cavernous room, large and elegant in its own right. Its glow casts light all around the circular space, upon patterned rocking chairs and into hidden nooks. (16:23) A fireplace dances jovially in a hearth set into the far wall, beckoning us into a vacant rocking chair in the wake of its warmth and light. The swell of holiday song reverberates around the rotunda, a private Christmas concert we can enjoy from the fireside mezzanine. Flames flicker away and music rises and falls in tandem. Time stands still and, for a moment at least, all is well. As we rock back and forth in rhythm with the orchestra, we realize that what we have really found Here in this place is the sought after tranquility so ubiquitously associated with this time of year. Impervious and resting like snowfall on the tips of tree branches, peace is a gentle presence. Like a friend who takes a seat next to you by the open hearth, not speaking or making a sound, peace is a comfort to the weary and worn, to those who have known trials and strife in the year gone by, and to those who simply need to know that they are not alone. You are not alone, not Here in this place where so many memories have been etched into the edifice of rock and stored in the rings of centuries-old reclaimed timber. These moments, of happiness, of peace and togetherness, are brought back to life in a special way this time of year. (17:20) They move like snowflakes, softly and quietly, and like Magic, undetectable by human eyes and yet felt as ardently as heat from the firelight. They twirl about and echo with the laughter and joy of generations, gladdening our spirits and revitalizing our souls. We know them, their sense of wonder and their delight at the Christmas season. We feel it too, as though they were seated by the fireside With us, sharing stories and hopes and dreams for the year to come. Still, the starry night outside calls to us, and a moonlit stroll along the edge of the forest is Magical in the winter stillness. (19:28) We hear the distant sounds of a waterfall calling from the wilderness, the horns from the nearby boat dock punching through the peaceful night as they make their final journey across Bay Lake before retiring for the evening. (19:59) The acoustic strum of the holidays surrounds us Here too, but as we make our way to the intoxicating aroma of campfire cooking at the water's edge, we find our nostalgia once again ignited as the electro-synthe-magnetic musical sounds of the Water Pageant reach our ears. (21:54) With an extra skip in our step, we follow the lights and sounds along the lakeshore, past the now dormant Fire Rock Geyser, and around the unusually empty Silver Creek Springs pool. On a cold night like this, and given the lateness of the hour, swimming seems an unlikely activity. Even so, the glassy surface reflects the moonlight, giving it a mesmerizing, ethereal glimmer. The revitalizing breeze brings us out of our reverie and into the present moment as we make our way along the winding pathways and footbridges toward the rush of Silver Creek Falls. We hear the babble of Silver Creek as it drifts along toward the picturesque waterfall, drowning out any sounds of caroling, of pageantry, or boats ferrying guests. (25:09) The gentle strum of a guitar plays into the night the sounds of the Solstice, serene and somehow part of the woodland fabric all around us. Violins glide through the melody like skaters on a frozen lake, so free and limitless in the capacity of their song. (26:41) Following the path alongside Silver Creek, we are brought once again into the luminescent radiance of the main lodge, its wall of high windows offering blurred visions of the people within. Like a scene from a beloved holiday story, we watch children's eyes mirror the dancing firelight, wide and in awe of the holiday wonderland they have found. We watch couples holding each other close, families reunited around the Christmas tree. (31:14) It would be impossible, standing out Here in the damp night air, to resist being part of such an enchanting scene. Rather than disrupt the holiday greetings and “welcome homes,” we find rest on the fringes of the scene, a sleek, high-backed rocker in front of the 82-foot tall Grand Canyon fireplace. Its massive stone structure and elaborate iron grate are a focal point in the absence of the opulent Christmas tree, but in this Norman Rockwell scene it instead offers a quiet, unassuming vigil; a refuge for anyone seeking a cozy moment of pause by the comforting blaze. (33:13) It is Here, on the outskirts of the yuletide cheer, that we are able to observe the true Magic of this place come to life. Elevated to its pinnacle in its overlay light and color, warmth and grace, Disney's Wilderness Lodge is a space for every kind of celebration. Whether you find yourself Here surrounded by loved ones, or in seeking solitude and reflection on your own, this space is comfort and joy in equal measure. It wraps us all in the resonant warmth of the season, unbiased and indulgent, in a welcome that makes us feel so very much at home, no matter how far from home we really are. (37:50) However your holiday season is taking shape, whatever draws you Here in heart or in spirit, it is our hope that you will know peace in this place that resounds like the choir of carolers now bidding us goodnight. We hope you will feel comforted by the undeniable presence of holiday cheer. (42:00) And on a silent, snowy night nestled in the valleys of the Pacific Northwest, a roaring fire calls you to rest in its cozy, incandescent glow. Whether weary from all that you've carried so far or alight with the joy of this season of hope, there is space held for you Here. This moment, this glorious time of year, is yours to be present in, yours to find comfort in, yours to know lasting peace. Be Here With the Magic of the holidays, the Magic that is found on a cold winter's evening in this haven in the heart of the wilderness.

Moving from data driven to metrics informed decisions and what does this mean for customer acquisition professionals? This was a primary topic of conversation on the latest Selling the Cloud podcast with Michael Pollack, Intricately CEOData is like water - it's really important if you don't have any but what if you have TOO MUCH? Water's value increases exponentially when you process or distill it into higher value outcomes (coffee vs water). This applies to B2B Marketing and Sales by evolving your data strategy from "contacts to context" - creating marketing & sales intelligenceCRM, Martech and Salestech platforms contain and create a lot of content (data) - but not enough context such as: - What to say and/or what content to share- When do you share it and how- How do you say it or how do you message the contentMarketing can add more value to revenue growth by REDUCING the number of leads and moving to a "disqualification" versus "qualification" orientation. Disqualifying low fit leads, contacts, and prospects increases time invested on high quality leads & opportunitiesWe all know the buying journey has changed - but why are we still using techniques from 10 years ago?Mike has some interesting insights and ideas that he shares in this episode.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Our culture tells us we should be so many things we are not, then tells us (without knowing us) that we should accept ourselves and embrace high self-esteem. God, on the other hand, is completely aware of who we are and how He made us. The things He has to say about us are not uninformed or generic. He knows what He made each of us to be, and He knows what we've each done with it so far. Today Cinthia looks at Psalm 139 where the Psalmist expresses awe at how well God knows him and at the amazingly creative work God did in making him. So what does this mean for how we handle our lives? Join Cinthia to look at God's incredibly intimate care for us and what it means to respond to the One Who made our fingerprints.

Maybe I am spoiling the end, but I can’t help myself. Michael Pollack, co-founder of Intricately, tells a story about how his team…using the data his product helps customers collect and used, helped his customer see a new opportunity, develop a new offering, and take to market. This is not even necessarily what his product helps customers do. His team went above and beyond the strict purpose of the product to help his customer achieve an outcome larger than their relationship required. Get early access to our latest psychology lectures: http://bit.ly/new-talks In this lecture, we will look at Jung's theory of individuation, where he maps out a path of psychological personality development that, ideally, culminates in greater self-knowledge. Intricately linked to this process is a gradual unfolding of the archetypal Self, which can be understood as an ideal image that both drives and is the end goal of individuation. While this lecture seeks to provide an in-depth introduction to this central concept in Jung's psychology, we will also ask some important critical questions: Is individuation an elitist endeavour? Can individuation be achieved without being in relationship to others? Most importantly, is individuation, as Jung conceived it, still possible in our hi-tech and digitally connected world? Dr Kevin Lu, PhD, is Director of Graduate Studies and Director of the MA Jungian and Post-Jungian Studies in the Department of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies, University of Essex. Rachel Twigg's sermon on John 1:1-14 for the 1st Sunday in Christmastide
It's a few days before Thanksgiving - a time of year full of celebrations with family and food. Before the prolonged period of eat-festing begins, I'm led to share an episode about fasting. Hang with me here… The end of the year season is celebratory, but it can also be difficult for those that have experienced loss or are currently experiencing lack. Going into this new year, some may want or need to leave some things behind in this decade and to step into 2020 with boldness and a clear vision of what is to come. Some may need strength or movement comfort or clarity, courage, or earnestly desire a more intimate relationship with God. Fasting can minister to these and other needs. Christian fasting is prayerful abstinence from food and or/drink for spiritual purposes. While it involves food, it's about much more than food. In the Bible, we see that fasting is not a command; it is a choice - one that can bring beautiful, powerful blessings. Intricately connected with prayer, fasting deepens our connection to God. This bonus episode shares resources, information, and inspiration that I pray will be helpful and supportive to you if you choose to take on this spiritual discipline. As data has gotten cheaper, companies have started buying it. All of it. But that's actually the worst thing we can do. Just ask your sales team. Instead, we should should focus on what attributes matter the most and dig deep on those, said Michael Pollack, our latest guest on The Sales Engagement podcast. He is the Co-Founder at Intricately, a company dedicated to helping cloud vendors understand how businesses are investing in their digital infrastructure. In this episode, Michael explained the 6 main types of data. He also talked about optimizing your sales organization, outlining a great framework you can use to identify the data that matters most to you. Here's what he had to say.
Those of you familiar with Rohit Tandon aka Sepoys' monthly 'Verdura Vibes' podcast on boxout.fm may associate him with soothing jazz-leaning tracks, lo-fi hip hop and relaxing downtempo mixes. As a producer, however, Sepoys is very much inclined towards making liquid drum 'n' bass. That's not to say it's very hard-hitting d'n'b either. His unique strain of liquid drum 'n' bass comes with ambient overtones and distinct melodic lines, occasionally making way for jungle. The Vancouver-based Indo-Canadian producer, DJ and art director, previously based in Goa, started out as a scratch DJ, before getting into house, downtempo and lounge. The liquid d'n'b that defines his sound is only a fairly recent development and one that he's getting quite skilled at. Intricately designed, Sepoys' productions are informed by engaging beats and immersive atmospheres. His mix for Wild City comprises largely of his own releases, with infrequent interjections by tracks from India-based drum 'n' bass artists Watashi, Crash Comet, The Untitled One and Aditya Malve x Quistek. There's a steady rhythm throughout the mix, a unifying percussion that keeps you engaged, and subtle changes of pace that offset potential boredom with intrigue.
