    Why is Fitness and Weight Loss So Hard?

    Why is fitness so hard? It certainly seems that being fit is a difficult task. Why else would there be a booming fitness industry, yet still a looming obesity epidemic. In 2021, the gym and fitness club industry alone was about 35 Billion US Dollars in 2021 and that was significantly down from pre-pandemic levels. And gyms are only a portion of the total fitness industry. In 2019, the weight loss and diet market size was said to be about 192 billion US dollars. Just for comparison, the entire NASA budget was just over 25 Billion USD for 2022. So, we're spending almost 8 times more money trying to get fat off our waists than we do getting people into space. So yeah, the fitness industry is huge, but according to the US Center for Disease Control, over 36% of US adults 20 and over were obese in 2016 data.  38% of men were obese. That's not small numbers. Statistically, that's an epidemic. The American diet certainly has a lot of do with those numbers, but shouldn't our fitness industry be helping to keep those numbers down? We are literally spending about $600 per US citizen on diet and weight loss per year. That's not an insignificant number.So, despite spending all this money on fitness, why are so many Americans not only overweight, but obese? Is it that fitness is hard? We'll discuss it next.     When we think about what it would take to lose weight, we often envision long hours at the gym, elliptical machines, and eating only salads. In fact, the whole fitness industry is based on promoting an easy fix, implying that weight loss is somehow too difficult for the average person to do alone. There are times when a personal trainer may be needed. For example, if you are training for a bodybuilding contest, you may indeed want to hire a trainer that specializes in such things. If you have any special needs, for example, if you are diabetic, you may want to hire an educated  nutritionist.  There are times when professionals are needed, and I'm not going to downplay the services they offer.However, for most people, weight loss is simply a matter of moving more and eating less. That's it, that's the secret sauce to weight loss and the beginning of a fit lifestyle.     Establishing Your Mindset for Weight Loss and FitnessWanting weight loss and to get fit is common, especially as we get older. However, statistics show that fewer than 20% of American adults take the actions that would result in them being fit.Is being fit all that hard? To be honest, not really. The US Department of Health and Human Services recommendations only require 150 minutes of aerobic exercise each week and two strength training sessions. That's it. Do those two things and you are doing better than 80% of US adults.So, then if it's that easy, why do so many adults fail at it. We know that the desire is there, at least on the surface level. We know this because the fitness industry is booming. It's estimated worth was $16 billion dollars in 2021 and is expected to grow to $474 billion by 2028. That's huge.     We've all tried to stick with an exercise routine, signed up for the gym membership, and after a few days without even thinking about it, quit. We've all gone out and bought tons of “healthy” food, just to have it sit in the refrigerator and rot while we go out for yet another value meal. We have good intentions, but we just don't stick to the plan. It's frustrating. And we often feel like failures when this happens, no matter how many times it happens. You think, “I'm never going to lose this weight. I'm stuck with it.” You probably even make up tangible excuses about being “big-boned” or “too old”. You know in the back of your mind that neither is true, but they work for your ego temporarily.The problem is while we like to make the goals, we have a harder time changing our story to match those goals. Think about all the New Year's Resolutions that are forgotten in the first week of January. “New Year, New Me” posts decorate social media on New Year's Eve and even January first.
