This solo episode of the Female Athlete Nutrition podcast is a holiday special, but suitable for listening all year round! I talk about the increase in triggering messages and diet culture myths during the holidays, especially around weight gain. I reveal the truth about holiday weight gain, normalizing body changes throughout the year, including weight fluctuations in athletes' off-seasons. Weight gain, especially for athletes, is often a very positive thing for health and performance. Enjoying the holidays and/or off-season, with all the special food and activity shifts, does not inherently mean weight gain: if your body does change, the science suggests it will be minimal and balanced out across different seasons. Remember, seek support from a registered dietitian if you are struggling with your fueling, as well as thoughts around food and your body: we are here to help! Chief Medical Officer at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital Dr. Kevin Most joins the Steve Cochran Show to discuss the first warning signs of pneumonia, strategies to avoid holiday weight gain, and determining the right moment to consult a doctor for antibiotics. Dr. Kevin Most's Steve Cochran Show Notes: Staying healthy thru the holidays- try to prevent the 2-3 lb. weight gain seen by many in the 15 days around holidays Set aside time for exercise- don't skip your exercise just because you are off work Set aside some time for yourself- holidays can be stressful- find some time just for you Don't go to holiday parties hungry- eat healthy snacks before you go, as the food at holiday parties are often loaded with fat, salt and calories Eat in moderation, the goal is to enjoy food not over indulge. Eat mindfully- enjoy the taste not the volume Try to stay on your typical sleep schedule Be aware and limit your alcohol intake, set the number and appropriate timing Don't drink on an empty stomach. Food slows the time that it takes for alcohol to get to the small intestine where it is absorbed Drink a glass of water or tonic water plain between drinks Add vegetables to your diet- vitamins and fiber Take a walk after dinner- it helps digestion, good for your heart, good for relationships and keeps you away from that second piece of pie Get your flu and Covid booster now for full protection at Christmas If you are sick, stay home and zoom with the family Wash your hands frequently Have an expert put up your Holiday lights or do it with a group for safety, unplug the tree before going to bed Obstructive sleep apnea This is a condition that has periods of time while sleeping that the airway is blocked and no breathing occurs The body realizes it is short on oxygen and triggers a response from the body, often waking the individual Individuals who snore loudly are noted to have this condition It occurs when the throat muscles relax and block the airway, this can happen many times during the night There are many complications from OSA Daytime sleepiness and fatigue Cardiovascular problems including high blood pressure Increased risk of heart arrythmias Complications with some medications making it worse Risk factors- age, excess weight, narrowed airway, nasal congestion, diabetes, smoking, males, asthma Treatment- CPAP- Continuous positive airway pressure, mouth pieces, surgery, upper airway stimulator – Possible new treatment- Medication- this would be the holy grail New study looked at a combination of 2 drugs that stimulate the muscles that often relax causing OSA The study looked at 175 individuals with 4 arms- meaning one group received the 2 drugs at a specific dose, arm 2 – received the 2 drugs at a lower dose, arm 3 received only one of the drugs and arm received a placebo The sleep studies showed great improvement in the 3 arms that received the drug and the placebo arm was unchanged Nocturnal desaturation (when your oxygen drops) decreased in the 3 arms that received medication The low dose combo was as effective as the high dose The single medication did not work as well and had more side effects A new Phase 3 study is being run now with a much bigger group What does this mean? Break the cycle of holiday overeating by listening to the FREE video training with the accountability workbook we created just for you to Eat, Drink & Be Merry Without the Holiday Weight Gain In this episode we debunk the lie that the fitness industry teaches about discipline being the key to a successful transformation and how that philosophy has kept dieters on a hamster wheel for years. Every frustrated dieter wonders why they can't just be more disciplined. They wonder why they can start off strong and the wheels inevitably fall off. Generic dieting advice and the “just try harder” narrative is flawed. In reality, most people have tried harder to lose weight than anything else they've ever had to work at. So if trying harder isn't the answer, what is? Imagine waking up each day trusting that you aren't going to overeat, that you won't run out of willpower, and you'll go to bed that night feeling proud that you broke the habit of overeating. How would it feel to be in control of food, instead of food controlling you? Our habits shape our lives and finding the right system makes all the difference in the world. Whether you've been a Restrictor or a Permitter in your dieting past, your current habits either work for you or against you. When you understand the power of a habit, for better or worse, it's easy to see how having the right habits, systems, and support in place is a game changer when it comes to fat loss. In this episode, you'll discover how to become consistent so you can not only achieve your goals, but you can maintain them with ease. You'll learn: How habits have all of the control and developing the right ones will save you years of frustration. How the pressures of life keep you circling the diet drain and how to practice being persistent no matter what obstacles you face. The real answer to sustainable fat loss that leave you feeling in control of food and never go on a diet again. If forcing your body into a smaller version of itself through dieting worked, it would have worked by now. It's time to try something different. Something that actually works. Dr. Mike Kim- Gaining weight over the holidays // High Speed Pursuit / Stolen Vehicle // Stolen Vehicle Pursuit
Mama, are you thinking about the holidays yet? I seriously can't believe we're already heading into the holiday season! It's crazy. There's so much to plan and do during the holidays, but one thing most women aren't thinking of during this time is their health.Well, that might not be exactly true. We're already aware of how all the Halloween candy, Thanksgiving sides and Christmas treats are going to make us gain weight. And in the back of our minds the stress is building up around that, but what we don't think about is how we can prevent holiday weight gain altogether! We don't think about avoiding holiday weight gain because we also think that means we have to say no to all of the fun foods that we associate with the holidays. And, Mama, I get that! I love me a Twix on Halloween. I always have my mom's mac and cheese at Thanksgiving. And I wait all year for this one Christmas party where me and my friends party all night! I don't want to give any of that up.And I don't want you to either.I don't want you to miss out on the food, or the memories, or any part of the holiday season! Those are special times, and a healthy life doesn't mean you have to be a recluse or say no to everything that brings you happiness - in fact, I'd argue that's a pretty unhealthy life!Instead of living in the two extremes: I can't eat anything good if I want to be healthy or I'm going to eat everything because YOLO! I want you to learn how to explore the middle ground. And the absolute best tool I have for finding that middle ground is getting in touch with your future self.Get in touch with your future selfIf I just freaked you out and you thought, ok this lady's a little too woo-woo for me, I want you to give me one more minute to explain!I promise this isn't as weird or woo-woo as it sounds. Have you ever daydreamed about where you'll be in the future? Have you pictured what you want your life to look like? What your family looks like in 5, or 10 years? Your career? If so, you've gotten in touch with your future self! See, not that weird! Now, I just want you to apply that to your health. If in 2, 5, or 10 years you were the healthiest version of yourself what would that look like? What would you like to eat? (It's ok if your answer isn't salads!)How would you move your body each day?Would you like to be able to be on the floor with your kids, or hiking mountains with them? How would your marriage or relationships look? What are the words you'd use to describe yourself when you looked in the mirror? And this is a big one: What would success in your health look and feel like? How would you know when you've “made” it?When you start answering these questions you can shape the future you. And it propels you into the next step: having the answers to all your problems.Use future you to solve your problems. There are always two versions of you. The Now You and the Future You.Now You is where you're at right now, obvious right? Now You might feel broken, frustrated or annoyed that no matter how hard she tries she can't seem to figure out how to reach her goal weight, or even just feel good about what she eats. Now You doesn't know the answer or even where to turn for answers! And then, there's Future You. She has accomplished everything you want to. She knows the way. She knows how to overcome every obstacle that Now You will face because she's already been there! Most of us were never taught to look to our future selves for answers, but that's exactly what we need to do, especially when we're feeling lost in all the noise we see online about how to eat healthier or what the best workouts for fat loss are.Mama, if you're looking outside of yourself for all the answers to your problems, then you're never going to reach your goals! If you are the problem, then you have to be the solution too. That's why eating the same meals as that Instagram influencer didn't work. It's why doing all the TikTok workouts didn't work. That's why the pill and shakes have failed too. Those weren't made for you! They were made for someone else.If you want to reach Future You, the healthiest version of you, then you have to understand where you're at, where you want to go and how to fit that into your life. You need a custom approach. One that you create - but with some guidance! You need a teacher to guide you through and teach you everything you need to know about nutrition so that you have the tools to set up your diet. And that's where the Macros Made Easy Program comes into play! I teach you what nutritional boundaries look like. I teach you how to handle all the twists and turns that you will eventually face along your health journey. But then, you lead the charge in choosing what fits into your boundaries! If you want to eat pasta every day, we make it work! If going out for drinks with your friends once a week is a priority, I'm not going to make you cut out alcohol! If you can't imagine giving up baking cookies with your kids and then enjoying one with a glass of milk, that's doable! When you start finding and creating the solutions to your health you will find a sustainable way of healthy living. And that's what I want for you! I don't want you to have to rely on me forever! I'm your guide, and once you've learned what you need to learn, then you have the power to take over and lead yourself!Where do you want to be three months from now?Let's pull back a little bit and look at the not-so-distant future. Instead of thinking a few years ahead, I want you to think about a few months from now. In January of 2024, where do you want to be in your health?Do you want to have eaten everything you ever craved, drank every drink someone put in your hand, and see a few extra pounds on the scale?Or, do you want to have created boundaries that allowed you to eat well, but also didn't add to your weight gain? What is the path Future You would tell you to take?If it's the second path, then let's talk. You can schedule a free Healthy Mama Blueprint call with me, where we'll talk about where you're at in your health and what your goals are. And we'll see if the Macros Made Easy Program is a good fit for you.If it is, then we can get you started within a week so that you can avoid the holiday weight gain without having to deprive yourself over the holidays. If it isn't the right fit or the right time for you, that's fine too! I'll try to suggest something else that fits your current needs.Either way, taking the step to book a call can help you start living as Future You - the healthiest version of you. According to a study in the London Journal of Medicine, people gain the most weight starting at the beginning of October (what some people would argue is the "start of the holiday season") and that weight gain peaks after New Year's. And what's more, that weight you gain during the holidays takes an average of 5 months to get back off! That's a whole half a year you're going to be struggling or punishing yourself for a few months of holidays. Not ideal. And that is just to get back to where you were in October! Today, I go over why we are so likely to gain weight over the holidays and how to set yourself up for success so you don't spend half the year trying to get back to where you are right now. This way, you don't start 2024 trying to reverse the last 3 months. Check out our "5 Weeks to Avoiding Holiday Weight Gain" program!
