In this Q&A episode, I answer questions about how to train for varied competitive distances without getting pulled in too many directions, explain my compelling stance on avoiding coffee (and NSAIDs), and give a plug for Dr. Doug McGuff’s “Big 5” total-body workout—a simple, highly effective way to stay strong with just one workout per week. I also share thoughts on how corporations like Whole Foods Market and PF Chang’s continue to sell plenty of crap despite their healthy reputations, discuss the magic of Zone 1 walking for building awesome aerobic fitness, and explain one of the best ways to tell if you’re doing too much strength training. Hint: you shouldn’t be getting sore. These are practical, everyday insights you can use right away to simplify your training, improve your health, and avoid some common mistakes. TIMESTAMPS: Jack, age 60, asks about his running goals. He says he is confused about what Brad says the parameters should be. [01:11] Jack has another question about coffee. Is having that stimulant in the morning helpful for your overall well-being as an athlete? [07:38] Another listener asks: Should I take my high intensity interval training, my strength training like Dr. Doug McGruff's Big Five and a basically walking approach to races? [15:45] Some comments from YouTube include this with Brad's comment: How long should you sprint to achieve all the health benefits? Brad's answer: All your entire life. [17:56] Monica initiates a discussion on the industrial seed oils being used rather than butter in restaurants and even Whole Foods and P.F. Changs. [18:50] Anthony asks about building up aerobic fitness by walking. Brad's response is thatthe aerobic base is built at the lower exercise intensities where your body has sufficient oxygen to develop and fine tune your mitochondrial function [27:00] Chad experiences soreness after trying to complete body weight exercises every other day to failure. Brad answers: If you have recurring soreness from your strength training regimen, you are most certainly overdoing it. [30:48] Dr. Doug McGruff's book, Body by Science, has a great regimen of five big workouts to do once a week. [32:22] Chad is also asking about his schedule for training. You want to have ebbs and flows in your schedule such that you have built in downtime and you always respect the importance of intuition and adjusting on the fly. Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why!A brand-new Equinox trainer asks a simple question with huge stakes: how do you program for a 54-year-old lawyer who's 260 pounds, 42% body fat, fresh off a divorce, and dead set on getting to 200? We walk through exactly how we'd run the first two Equifit sessions so the client feels safe, seen, and genuinely excited to come back, not crushed and embarrassed after 15 minutes. We get specific on the assessment that makes you look like a true professional, including why taking blood pressure and resting heart rate is a credibility multiplier and a real service to the client. From there, we map out a “Goldilocks” first workout: warm-up with engagement, smart upper-body work before heavy legs, simple circuits built on push, pull, core, carries, and accessories that keep the session fun without turning it into random chaos. The goal is adherence and momentum, then progressive overload as conditioning improves. Then we shift to the part most trainers avoid: the sit-down conversation that turns a great workout into a committed client. We share how to present personal training packages clearly, why fewer options sell better, and how to add value with bonus sessions, reviews, and referrals while still playing the long game on your career. If you coach with competence and consistency, your rates rise because your results rise.If you got something from this, subscribe, share the episode with a trainer who needs it, and leave a quick rating and review.Want to become a SUCCESSFUL personal trainer? Welcome back to Late Boomers! We're your hosts, Cathy Worthington and Merry Elkins, and today we're diving into a topic that's close to our hearts—and so important to living our best third act: Fitness After 50. Whether you're just entering this milestone or already thriving in your 60s, 70s, or beyond, this episode is packed with inspiration, practical advice, and real stories to help you stay strong, independent, and energized at every age.We sit down with Michael Guadagnino, author of Fitness Over 50, 60, 70, and Beyond, who shares his passion for helping boomers unlock their potential through movement—no matter their starting point. Michael sheds light on why the habits we build post-50 make such an impact on our longevity, happiness, confidence, and daily independence. We also bust some damaging fitness myths, talk about the power of functional strength, and get actionable tips for building a routine that feels good—without intimidation.Key Takeaways:It's Never Too Late: Michael's story about Joan Campbell, who began exercising at 59 and was still swimming into her 90s, is proof that transformation is possible at any age.Ditch the Comparison Game: The most important shift is to listen to your own body, stop comparing yourself to others, and build your unique path to fitness.Functional Fitness Is the Goal: We discuss why being able to move well in daily life—not just in the gym—matters so much as we age.Strength Training Matters: Especially for women, building muscle is critical for balance, metabolism, and fall prevention, but getting started doesn't have to be overwhelming.Start Simple, Start Small: You don't need fancy equipment or a gym membership—Michael gives great examples of calisthenics, resistance bands, and walking.Mindset Makes the Difference: Embracing aging, letting go of fear and negative self-talk, and celebrating small wins can transform how you approach fitness.Move More, Sit Less: Michael's motto, “Movement is life,” underlines how important it is to simply keep moving, stretch, and keep blood flowing—even just a few times a week.Ready to Take the First Step?Michael's advice is to pick one simple thing you can do today—whether it's a short walk, a few chair exercises, or writing down a small goal. Progress, not perfection, is what counts! If you found this episode motivating, please subscribe, rate, and leave us a review. Some people are just born for what they do—and Robbie Stahl is one of them.At just seven years old, he was already lifting river rocks in his backyard with a homemade weight set. By the time he was 15, athletes were paying him to write their training programs. Fast-forward nearly three decades, and Robbie is the go-to expert for people over 50 who want to feel 20 years younger—without pain, burnout, or pushing themselves into injury. In this episode, Robbie, founder of The Fitness Doctor, breaks down why traditional workouts don't work for aging bodies, why focusing on intensity is the wrong approach, and how biomechanically optimized exercise heals you as it strengthens you.Robbie also shares what he learned from a five-year study of over a million data points to create what he calls the world's most advanced fitness system for people over 50.If you've ever wanted to feel strong, stable, and energized again without wrecking your joints or dragging yourself through another brutal gym session, this conversation will change how you look at exercise."Exercise is degenerative. It's like woodworking. You have to be really careful where you're taking little nicks away, otherwise you're gonna mess up the image." ~ Robbie StahlAbout Robbie StahlRobbie Stahl is the founder of The Fitness Doctor and a biomechanical exercise specialist with over 27 years of experience in the field. He has developed the world's most advanced, research-backed training system for people over 50 and has worked with elite athletes, military professionals, and thousands of men and women who want to restore mobility, reduce pain, and feel decades younger. His programs combine science, neurology, and biomechanics to deliver results without injury.Resources:➡️ Learn more about the molecule behind the longest life extension in history at https://MyVitalC.com Connect with Robbie Stahl:- Website: https://thefitnessdoctor.com - Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/fullbodyfixchallenge - Email: patricia@thefitnessdoctor.com - Full Body Fix program – join the event at https://bodyfix.thefitnessdoctor.com/ Connect with Chris Burres:- Website: https://www.myvitalc.com/ - Website: http://www.livebeyondthenorms.com/ - Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chrisburres/ - TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@myvitalc - LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/chrisburres

Recently, I had the honor of interviewing a truly remarkable woman on my podcast - Kim Rahir, a 60-year-old competitive Olympic weightlifter. Kim's incredible journey began in her late forties when she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). Despite her neurologist's warnings to “take it slow,” Kim walked straight from his office into the gym, determined to reclaim power over her body.   What began as a small act of defiance soon transformed into a lifelong passion. As Kim devoted herself to weight training, she grew measurably stronger and healthier, astonishing her doctors with her recovery. They credited her dedication to strength training and proper nutrition with successfully managing her MS when other options had failed. By her early fifties, Kim was getting strong and learning Olympic lifts under an experienced coach. Now, just over a decade later, Kim is redefining what is physically possible after 50. Last year, at age 60, she won a silver medal in Olympic weightlifting at the European Masters Championship. During our podcast interview, Kim eloquently dispelled prevailing myths surrounding age and athleticism. With her dedication to diet and intense training, she is living proof that maintaining supreme fitness well into retirement age is achievable. Her energy and lust for life moved me deeply. She encouraged my audience to ignore the doubters and recognize that transformative growth remains possible at any age. At 60, as she trains for upcoming international contests, Kim Rahir exemplifies grace, wisdom, and mighty strength - both inner and outer. Hers is the story not of youthful potential but of a maturity that empowers and enriches our second acts. You can connect with Kim in the following ways: Website:https://kimrahir.com Email:kim@kimrahir.com Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/kim.rahir/Want to rewrite the narrative of your life and health? Are you ready to get out there and start crushing midlife? If you have any fears about getting older, or you think aging is no fun, you need to listen to this conversation. My guest is Mimi Ison, an athlete, influencer and founder of Hey Middle Age. At age 60, Mimi is pushing herself physically almost every day: boxing and dancing and lifting weights and flying on a trapeze and doing a myriad of other activities that will blow you away. Mimi wants you to realize it's never too late to discover new things about yourself and challenge your body in exciting new ways. To find activities that light you up. And to exceed your expectations of what you are capable of. Like the rest of us, Mimi has also been through some messy midlife stuff. So our chat touches on how you can build not just muscle mass, but emotional resilience and personal strength too. During this episode Mimi divulges: What happened the first time she walked onto a boxing ring How she got through a physically and emotionally difficult period in her 50s Why she took a pause to listen to her body and take better care of herself The big revelation she had on her recent "big" birthday Why she thinks it's OK for women to care and talk about their looks Why she started her blog as a gift to herself, and how her Instagram turned her into an influencer almost overnight How she overcame the fear of putting herself out there and why she's saying "yes" to more opportunities these days Why she did an unpaid internship in her 40s, and the freedom she gained from being a beginner in midlife What "working out" means to her now, how she makes strength training fun, and how she keeps injuries from derailing her fitness goals Mimi also tells you how you can find an activity or workout that fits your lifestyle, and she shares her top three tips on how to love and celebrate your body right now—no matter where you are on your fitness journey. Listen now to my conversation with the lovely Mimi, and I promise you will no longer have doubts about how joyous midlife can be! Complete show notes available at Morebeautifulproject.com.

So its hard to say if breaking my neck when I was 31 would have changed my tragectory to becoming a Personal Trainer and Online Coach. But I believe it had alot to do with how I perceived my life and how being healthy was really all that mattered. Because having money means absolutely nothing when you wake up in pain and dread every single morning.

I just got back last night from the first professional conference I've been to since before the pandemic.  You know how these things are. If you're lucky, there are so many smart people around, great ideas are flying by you one after the other, and you leave with a head full of information, perspectives and contacts. Now, Im going to share some of that information on the show today – the bits that struck me as being relevant for gym and studio owners who are working with people ove 50 and want to grow their businesses.Chief among them -- the 'Fans First' approach behind the wild success of the Savannah Bananas baseball team, and how what we can learn from it in promoting fitness over 50.Life Priority Supplements -- Affiliate Discount  hereNaamly – Support our advertiser, who helps you keep in touch with your membersFunctional Aging Institute -- Use FAIMM50 discount codePrime Fit Content – Engage the over-50 market

A lot of people have similar insecurities around writing as they do around money. That's true for fitness professionals as much as it is for anyone. And this week on the Optimal Aging podcast, I'm talking about all of that and more with Billy Hofacker on Billy's podcast, Your Fitness Money Coach.Billy's a gym owner in Long Island and caters to the over-50 market. He's also a financial coach for other fitness business owners. He welcomed me onto his show recently, and I liked the resulting conversation so much that I want to share it with you here.We have different backgrounds on all of this, but again, the similarities between communications and finances are striking -- more accurately, the similarities between COMMON INSECURITIES about communications and finances are striking.Billy and I talk about money, we talk about marketing, we talk about some of the insecurities that drive us, and that maybe drive you , as well. I hope you enjoy the conversation.ResourcesYour Fitness Money Coach podcastBilly on FacebookLife Priority Supplements -- Affiliate Discount  hereNaamly – Support our advertiser, who helps you keep in touch with your membersFunctional Aging Institute -- Use FAIMM50 discount codePrime Fit Content – Engage the over-50 market

Here's a story for every gym or studio owner who says he doesn't have time to manage an email list or send out emails to prospects and clients on a regular basis. For Paulo Andalaft of Fit Factor in Fort Lauderdale, one email he sent in 2017 has brought in hundreds of thousands of dollars in ongoing revenue – and is still generating new referral clients right now. That's right. One email = hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue. How's that possible?
