I recently had the pleasure of parking up in the Cabana at Black Barn in Hawkes Bay and riffing on wine life with wine writer Elaine Chukan Brown. I say wine writer but actually they are much more than simply that. Elaine's wine journey started in earnest in 2011 but it's the life they had in the lead up to then that brings a richness and depth and, at times great humour, to this chat. Originally from Alaska, Elaine now calls Sonoma, California home and to spice things up they rocked up to our get together with a bottle of wine from Washington state. That threw me - especially as it was a Sauvignon Blanc blend. You could call that a ballsie move to sit down with a kiwi and pour them a glass of that stuff but what it actually was, was an incredible portal that saw us transcend into chatting about prohibition, the great depression, world war II and the effects it had on the American wine trade as well as Elaine's time spent training camels. You heard that right but here's the thing. The training camels came after a stint as a Tarot card reader for a Dial-a-Psychic gig which came after a decade of fishing for salmon. Not serious enough for ya? I'm deadly serious when I say this one is a cracker folks. After all those various vocations, Elaine has ended up dedicating their time to being a global wine educator, a wine mentor, a wine lover but mostly an absolute advocate for the people behind the bottle. The list of credentials Elaine has earned when it comes to wine is far reaching and includes publishing a wine book, The Wines Of California, assisting with the publication of the 4th and 5th editions of the Oxford Companion to Wine along with freelance writing for all the top wine mags. Perhaps most importantly, they co-founded the Diversity in Wine Leadership Forum, and has advised diversity initiatives in multiple countries around the world. They were in Aotearoa for the 2024 Chardonnay Symposium - a two day exploration of everything Chardonnay held in Heretaunga, Hastings by Hawkes Bay Wine. The key theme for the conference was to discuss a 'sense of place' and Elaine was asked to offer their take on it all, from Canterbury to California or Bannockburn to Burgundy. With deep roots to their own place and an academic background in Philosophy (that came after all the camels), they were one of the very best wine people to help define what a sense of place even means. So, shuffle your tarot cards, pour something that makes you think hard and get the cold smoked salmon plated up. This is the not serious Elaine Chukan Brown.not serious wine chats would like to thank our supporters:TradecraftBy the BottleAntipodes Water Co. In this week's captivating episode, we delve into the fascinating world of sustainable farming with author and co-founder of Black Barn Farm, Jade Miles.Black Barn Farm, is a biodiverse orchard, nursery and workshop space in north east Victoria which is a magnet for visitors to learn about permaculture, homesteading, as well as to pick-their-own from some of the 98 varieties of heritage fruit and berries. Jade's journey from urban living to becoming a passionate advocate for regenerative agriculture is a true inspiration. A renowned sustainable farmer and environmental activist, with a background in ecology and a deep love for the earth, Jade, alongside her partner Charles Showers, embarked on a life-changing adventure to establish Black Barn Farm, a thriving hub for regenerative farming practices. Her commitment to ethical and sustainable agriculture has earned her recognition in the field.Jade is part of a growing wave of women keen to arm themselves with skills like farming, composting, making and mending, and pickling and preserving. Just as the Covid-19 lockdown and its closure of supermarkets and limited food supplies were a call to arms for amateur sourdough bakers, Miles and her cohort were inspired by impending climate change, like the 2020 summer bushfires, to become more self-sufficient and less reliant on material and consumer culture.Join us for an enlightening conversation with Jade Miles, as we uncover the secrets of sustainable farming and its vital role in creating a healthier planet. Sometimes you just need to have a few key elements in place in your marketing system to get the sales going. In today's episode, I interview a guest who spends most of her time on two things -- social media and an email marketing process (called a "nurture email automated sequence"). These two elements are enough to drive new clients into her world and get them to feel ready to buy her bulk beef. If you're looking for ideas for content marketing for a bulk buy business, this episode will resonate with you! Head to my special affiliate link to get started: www.mydigitalfarmer.com/localline Who is Sarah Lovenuk? My guest today is Sarah Lovenuk from Black Barn Farms in Oxdrift, Ontario. Black Barn Farms was started in 2017 when Sarah and her husband Phil bought their property together. After converting a pole barn into a house the first year, they started their farm adventure in 2018 with 6 pigs, selling mostly to family and friends. Sarah wanted nothing to do with Phil's farming dreams at first, but was slowly convinced of the beauty of being able to farm regeneratively in order to improve the environment they live in and work with the ecosystems already occurring in nature! The goal at Black Barn Farms is to provide healthy pork and beef locally, with a dedicated focus on ethical livestock treatment, regenerative agriculture practices, and a sustainable source of quality food! Both enterprises are marketed as bulk sales every year as well as retail sales straight from the farm! They are the only farm in their area that has implemented the use of hydroponically grown fodder in order to reduce hay and grain consumption year round! Sarah recently retired from a 10 year career as a dental hygienist to take over farm sales, marketing, and farm education. Through early promotion of their farm ideals through social media, their farm has gained a reputation and a decent following in their small town. They have recently joined a local food co-op to enhance their sales reach outside of their community and created an online store in order to make selling their meats more convenient for local folks! It has been a huge success! Website: www.blackbarnfarms.ca Some of the resources mentioned in this episode: Join my free email list! Fun fact: Gideon Falls Volume 1 was the 7th Arc Analysis we ever did, and the first one we made it's own drop. Even though that was years ago, Volume 2 was always on our minds to return to because this book stays with you. Atmospheric, tense, creepy, gripping, psychedelic, creepy... Did we say creepy yet? This picks up right where Volume 1 leaves off, following the conflicted Father Fred in one version of the town and the disturbed Norton in another. Both of them on a search for answers and the mysterious Black Barn at the center of it all. --Hit us up at comicpatrolpod@gmail.com if you want to add a submission for a future Arc Analysis-- --Follow the Weapons on Twitter @Comic_Patrol for some extra tidbits of fun (we maybe promise it isn't creepy D pics)--
Where to start reading comics is a question that is always being asked by new readers and throughout the comic book community. It is a difficult question to ask, but one of our highest recommendations we can rely on is the works of the writer Jeff Lemire. Especially if you are looking to explore multiple different genres other than popular superheroes comic books. Gideon Falls by Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino with colors by the infamous Dave Stewart really does an excellent job at developing a new horror based world that is grounded in reality, but knows how to make it less predictable. There is always a new layer of mystery to get to the heart or center of the plot. However, once we learn the rules of Gideon Falls, the purpose behind the Black Barn that is seen is Norton Sinclair's visions, and the motivations about the Smiling Man behind the curtain, this supernatural story has you invested as you keep turning the page. If you are looking for a refreshing take on the horror genre, with a combination of supernatural along with mystery plot elements this book is for you. It also rewards readers for noticing small details or phrases, so do not be afraid to go back to reread previous issues as well. As fans of Jeff Lemire we strongly encourage readers to check out this story, his bibliography, as well as our previous reviews of Black Hammer and Sweet Tooth.
Jade Miles is the founder of Futuresteading - a movement, outlook and practical guide to living like tomorrow matters. Through her work as an author, speaker and podcast host she shares how to build your seasonal rhythm, expand your earth-skills and live your life in deep care and respect for the earth. Together with her husband Charlie, Jade runs Black Barn Farm — an ‘intentionally slow' orchard and nursery in North East Victoria. The farm is deeply entrenched in community, permaculture & regenerative practices. Throughout the year they offer workshops, events, tours, and pick-your-own produce days. All with the hope to get people more engaged and connected to the food we eat and the food systems that it comes from. Jade is somebody who truly walks her talk, who is deeply embodied and entrenched in her values and her commitment to the earth, to people, to community and to living like tomorrow matters. And she does so in an incredibly practical and tangible way.' In this episode we talk about: ➳ Key experiences that paved Jade's path in the work she now does ➳ What is Futuresteading? And how can it change the world? ➳ Seasonal living - including the rituals & celebrations and the details Jade's attuned to in the shifting seasons. ➳ The SIX seasons that Jade follows throughout the year (and how this aligns with the wheel of the year) ➳ Why Place-making is deeply important in our ability to connect with the world, with the land, and to live in a way that values tomorrow ➳ Jades shares beautiful wisdom around the power of Mutual Obligation in our world, as well as the call for being more open-source with our skills and our knowledge ➳ The importance of Community in a world that is built on systems that are unsustainable - especially the likes of our food systems and food sovereignty. We need each other and we need to know how to practice and build Community. Jade shares her thoughts and experience around this, especially for those of us who feel uncomfortable, afraid, introverted. ➳ Where to start and HOW to start if you feel called to grow your own food on any scale ☾ Plus so much more ☾ EPISODE RESOURCES Jade's Futuresteading podcast - start with this episode on Place-making! Jade Miles is an author, podcaster, farmer, organiser, speaker, and a few other things besides. I first came across Jade's podcast, Futuresteading, back when it started. Then last year, the visual extravaganza of Futuresteading the book came along - sub-titled ‘live like tomorrow matters: practical skills, recipes and rituals for a simpler life'. It draws on Jade's family life at Black Barn Farm – which features an incredible orchard of around 100 varieties of heritage fruit and berries, along with nursery, and workshop space in the Black Barn. Jade has also more recently become the CEO of Sustainable Table – so we get the inside story here of that transformative work and Fund we've heard a bit about in recent episodes. Jade is one terrific communicator and connector. And here there is also some pretty raw, honest and grounded reflections. We start with the fascinating and at times funny back story of their journey to becoming farmers, before exploring that inside story of Sustainable Table. Then standby for our chat about her book and podcast, particularly the one episode that shook her for days - with Tyson Yunkaporta. There's a bit of us two podcasters examining deeply what the point of doing such a thing might be, in light of her experience. And that's our take off point for exploring her profound experiments with ritual at home, deeply felt mother's dilemma on education and rites of passage, and her emotional connection with her music selection – one that comes full circle to her life's beginnings. In some ways, Jade's one of a growing number of folk who, with her family, is just doing what they're spotting up needs to be done – whether by them, or helping others, wherever they call home. This glimpse into the art of how they're trying to make it work, financially, health-wise, family-wise, and with investors and philanthropists in the regeneration movement at large, offers plenty of evolving insights. So here we are - Episode 100 of The Paul Weller Fan Podcast - who would have thought it? Firstly - thanks to you for your support , your shares and your thoughts - its all helped to get us to number one on iTunes and to grow listeners to the podcast over the past 18 months. Thanks to my wife and family for letting me do this thing - evenings, weekends and holidays spent creating something I hope is truly unique and special to fans of Paul Weller. To all the guests from past and future - it would be nothing without you - your honesty, warmth, stories and generosity is hugely appreciated. And of course thanks to Paul Weller! For the music - the live gigs - the story arc of 50 years from the creation of The Jam with Steve Brookes to now - and here's hoping for some time with Paul in the future for what will undoubtably be an epic interview at some point in the future right ? Episode 100 - takes us to Ripley - the Surrey village that is home to Paul's studio Black Barn - and also home for Paul's mum - Ann Weller. I always had Ann in mind as our centenary episode guest as was absolutely delighted to get a YES to my request - INCREDIBLE! Ann is not just Paul's mum - but she has been a key player in his story from The Jam to now - together with John, her dear late husband , Paul and Nicky's father, who managed The Jam, The Style Council and Paul Solo for over 30 years, until his sad passing in 2009. This was an absolute honour to spend time with Ann chatting over a cuppa and scone and a very special chat… I hope you enjoy - and thanks again for listening to our journey so far... As much as I love talking to the musicians, the singers and the songwriters, the producers and engineers, the music industry promoters, tour managers, road crew, band members, journalists and others, who have worked and collaborated with Paul Weller, this podcast was always intended to be a voice for the fans to share their memories of The Jam, The Style Council and Paul Weller… So many of these fans are just great story-tellers with great stories to tell, able to paint a picture on what the man and his music has meant to them over the years. This is another one of those very special episodes - with a man who is a regular in the front row at Weller gigs, on the forums and at events. My latest podcast guest is Shane Juson. We'll hear about his discovery of The Jam in 1979 - singles albums, live gigs, soundchecks, band meetings and more... We'll hear about his love of The Style Council and Paul Weller solo - from the early Movement gigs in 1990 and front-row adventures on every tour since (he's even got the t-shirts to prove it!). We'll also hear about some pretty wonderful and bizarre moments too. For example, watching Paul Weller's reactions at Black Barn, whilst listening to some of On Sunset on the day after the final recordings to having his photo taken by Paul next to the famous Stanley Road jukebox and being driven round the corner by Paul in his mini, for a tea and scone at The Nest with Charles Rees, Tom Van Heel & another superfan, Keiko Egawa… You can find photos that tie in to our conversation on my website, and join here for Shane's Facebook Group - Absolute Beginners The Jam. Another very special episode. Have a listen - share on your social media channels - and leave a 5-star review wherever you get your podcasts... It was a sheer delight to welcome actor and musician, Max Beesley onto The Paul Weller Fan Podcast. What a talent! - piano, vibes, drums and percussion - song-writing - production - and a successful TV & movie acting career to boot!. The Paul Weller Movement kicks off... Even though he was just 18 at the time, Max played a key part in those early days of Paul's solo career with The Paul Weller Movement. He performed live as part of the band across the UK and Europe in 1990/91. Surely I'm not the only one who managed to wear out a VHS copy of the Brixton Academy show because I played it so often?!. I've posted a link to that gig below as it's so very special to me - amazing songs and performances all round. Funky as hell too!. It was recorded on 20th April 1991, a whole year before Paul's first solo album was released in Japan (18 months in the UK). The gig features Steve White on drums, Jacko Peake on saxophone and flute, Henry Thomas on bass and Max Beesley on keys and vibes. Into Tomorrow, Kosmos & playing on the Wild Wood LP Cast your mind back to 6th May 1991. The first solo single… Into Tomorrow was released - and Paul was back!. Recorded at Solid Bond in February, this absolute banger has Weller on vocals, bass, guitars and percussion. Steve White is on drums, Dr. Robert (The Blow Monkeys) on guitar (and BV) with Max on the organ. He also mentions on the podcast about recording Kosmos during that session too. Next time you are digging in to your Weller albums - check out Wild Wood to hear Max performing extra vocals with Marco Nelson on Has My Fire Really Gone Out? and playing wurlitzer on Moon on Your Pyjamas (a song that Paul wrote for his eldest son, Nat). New Music - Song for Sabrina + Omar + Weller Solo? As you'll hear during our chat, Max has been working with Paul again in recent years. We hear about a very special collaboration called Song for Sabrina on his own soon-to-be-released solo album - The Groove Spectrum, working with his old Guildhall mate (and previous podcast guest) Omar in Paul's studio for his new LP and even recording some late night grooves with Paul at Black Barn that will hopefully turn up in the future. What a Roll Call... As a session musician, Max played, toured or recorded with the likes of Incognito, Jamiroquai, Robbie Williams, Omar, Brand New Heavies, George Benson, Stevie Wonder, The JB's and Zero7. As an actor, he has starred in many hugely successful TV series - The History of Tom Jones, Bodies, Hotel Babylon, Mad Dogs, Jamestown and The Outsider. In 2022, you'll be able to see Max starring alongside Keeley Hawes in Sky TV sci-fi thriller The Midwich Cuckoos and in Guy Ritchie's new movie Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre with Hugh Grant, Jason Statham, Aubrey Plaza and Josh Hartnett. Spoiler alert, you can also see Max on screen during the Paul Weller video On Sunset - with a little cameo appearance at the end on the promo film. On this episode I'm joined by PR Guru, Polly Birkbeck (the lady who looks after press for the main man - Mr Paul Weller!) Polly started her career as A&R assistant in the early 90s at Food Records (label for Blur, Jesus Jones, Diesel Park West and others) before heading over to Savage & Best PR where she was Head of Press working with the likes of Pulp, Suede, Elastica and Menswear during the crazy days of BritPop! She moved to v2 Records in 2000 and has worked with Paul Weller ever since - including for the past 15 years on her own venture, Complete Control PR Polly has loads of lovely stories of working with Paul, and even a nice surprise about the Black Barn crew and this little podcast thing! This is the story of a real life dream come true. When we began this podcast almost one year ago, we never imagined bringing you an episode like this one. But slowly, week by week, as we planted the small seeds of the Out of the Ordinary podcast a dream began to grow: could we invite a few of our listeners to join us at Maplehurst? Could we record one of our storytelling conversations in the context of a community? And friends, you said “yes.” You said yes faster than we could have imagined and all 50 tickets disappeared on the first day. (for which we are so grateful and which was a confirmation to us, to keep saying yes to more live gatherings). And the joyful sound of your “yes” is this episode. It’s a little louder than our typical style. It has a little more energy. But this is the sound of our gratitude and our awe. And the sound of 50 people listening in to our live conversation. And then a live Q&A. The barn felt like holy ground and a holy gathering that practically crackled in the place. Paul invites John to his studio, Black Barn, to discuss why – after more than four decades as one of Britain’s greatest singer songwriters - he’s still as excited to be making new music today as when he first started writing songs as Beatles-obsessed teenager. He discusses how his latest album, the acclaimed True Meanings, reflects on age and mortality, and reveals how a battered acoustic guitar provided the totemic inspiration behind some of his best loved songs, from That’s Entertainment to Wild Wood. This is an invitation. But before the invitation? A story, of course. This is the story of grass seeds and weeds. This is a story about the hard, daily work of preparation and how good that work can be. Lisa-Jo and Christie are inviting a small group of readers and listeners to join them for a gathering in celebration of Lisa-Jo's new book The Middle Matters. But first? There is particular work to be done, and this is a conversation about that work. Whether or not you have a barn of your own, whether or not you host large gatherings, we are all called to the ordinary, daily work of keeping and tending our people and our places. We may dream of glorious gardens, but first we must plant the small seeds and pull the persistent weeds. Here is your invitation! outoftheordinarypodcast.com/live We hope to see you at the Black Barn on July 27 when we host the first of what will be regular, intimate gatherings for conversation and community. This is the story of your worst fear come true. This is a conversation about trusting God with our kids, and others we love, this new year. Christie and Lisa-Jo recorded this episode after celebrating one son's eleventh birthday in the Black Barn at Maplehurst. If children make wishes when they blow out birthday candles, the parents who love them make wishes, too. Mostly we want our kids to be safe. But what if God wants to give them something better, something more, than safety? Christie tells the story of the terrible mistake that almost cost her young son's life, leading to a conversation filled with hard questions and trustworthy promises. If you worry about what this year might bring to those you love most in the world, this episode is for you. Listener invitation: Come find us on Instagram using the #OutoftheOrdinaryPodcast hashtag and share your new year's hopes and prayers for your precious loved ones. Black Barn is not your run of the mill investments shop. For one thing its founder Sara Glakas wants to listen. She started the Austin Women’s Investing Group, she’s active in the Initiative to Educate Afghan Women, and she also won 4 national championships with her NCAA basketball team. Sara is also a mom and wife and somehow keeps it all moving in a positive direction. On the episode, Sara shares about business, motherhood, and life. Hope you’ll listen! @NCAAwomen
This is a story about the search for a barn. Today we dig into what it looks like and feels like to watch your dream break into little bits and pieces you can't make sense of. Christie takes us from Chicago to Florida to a small town in Pennsylvania that often reeks of mushroom farms and manure where she buried all her broken bits of hope and then watched them grow. She shares the story of the time she opened her home to a small group, bought all the study books, and not one person showed up. If you're like us then you already know that dreams usually look nothing and also everything like you hoped. There's no straight road between what we dream and the realities we live and along the way all kinds of things we imagined, prayed, and hoped get broken. Let's talk about that today. Join the conversation! Let us know if you'd be interested in joining us for a day at the Black Barn by tagging @lisajobaker and @christiepurifoy or use our hashtag #OutOftheOrdinaryPodcastBecause we've got a new dream now and we hope to have you all over some day!
