Our guest today is Rachael Stirling: the brilliant theatrical actress and one of the stars of BBC comedy Detectorists, who is currently on stage in London in Giant, about the writer Roald Dahl. Gyles and Rachael begin by talking about a memorable conversation Gyles had with Rachael's mother, the great actress Dame Diana Rigg, when he interviewed her 25 years ago. And this interview with Rachael is no less memorable: it's a fascinating discussion of her childhood, her complex relationship with her mother, and her parents' divorce. It's a frank discussion of her first sexual experiences and her boarding school days (NB this episode is more graphic than our usual, with sexual refs and some swearing). And, finally, it's a moving discussion of Rachael's experiences as her mother's carer in the final months of her life. This is a special and very touching episode, thank you so much to Rachael. Rachael Stirling is currently playing Felicity Crosland in Giant, about the writer Roald Dahl, at the Harold Pinter Theatre in London. It's on for the rest of the summer and tickets are available here. Enjoy this. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices Hosted on Acast. To mark the tenth anniversary of BBC sitcom Detectorists, Mark Kermode and Ellen E Jones dig into archaeologists and treasure hunters on screen. Mark speaks first to stand-up comedian and actor Alexei Sayle about his small, but pivotal, role in the third Indiana Jones film The Last Crusade. Mark then talks to Italian director Alice Rohrwacher, whose recent film La Chimera is the story of a down-at-heel tomb raider, played by Josh O'Connor, looting Etruscan artefacts in 1980s Italy. Meanwhile, Ellen speaks to French-Senegalese filmmaker Mati Diop about her new film Dahomey - a docudrama that follows 26 looted treasures from the 19th century Kingdom of Dahomey, as they make their return trip from Paris to present-day Benin. And she talks to Mackenzie Crook, creator and star of Detectorists, about how an episode of Time Team inspired the series - about a pair of Essex metal detectorists hunting for long-buried treasures from the past.Producer: Jane Long A Prospect Street production for BBC Radio 4

Johnny Flynn is a polymath – as comfortable as an actor on stage and screen as he is writing and performing songs. You have perhaps seen him as Mr Knightley in the film Emma or as Ian Fleming in Operation Mincemeat. In his latest film, One Life, he stars alongside Anthony Hopkins, as the young Nicholas Winton, who helped Jewish children flee from the Nazis in what became known as the Kindertransport. He's currently starring as Richard Burton in the play The Motive and the Cue, the story of how Burton and Sir John Gielgud clashed as they staged Hamlet on Broadway in 1964. Johnny has also released four albums with his band Johnny Flynn & The Sussex Wit. He composed the theme song for the acclaimed TV series Detectorists, and more recently he's collaborated with the nature writer Robert MacFarlane on two folk albums: Lost in the Cedarwood and The Moon Also Rises. This week, Dan and Kasia talk about the sweet and gently profound Mackenzie Crook sitcom Detectorists, and what a powerful case it makes for 'ordinary civilians' doing grassroots history as a hobby. Maybe we all have a Saxon burial ground underneath our feet? Isn't that a thrilling thought? Can even a ringpull from a can of Tizer help bring the 1980s to life? Then there's Time Team, the show responsible for bringing archeology to the masses and making it sexy - how did it end up as a YouTube show, and what became of the anti-establishment hero at the heart of it (we're not talking about Tony Robinson, sorry Tony). *** For the full episode, join our Patreon!! *** ONLY £4 A MONTH TO SUPPORT YOUR FAVOURITE CULTURAL HISTORIANS - AND GET 20+ BONUS EPISODES AND A CURSED OBJECTS STICKER PACK! That's right, our sometimes-guest, sometimes-editor, sometimes-host Jacob climbs aboard for a deep dive into the life of one of his favorite authors, Herman Melville, who was a card-carrying Meatlovian drama queen.Melville is best known for being the author of Moby-Dick, which we will begin reading and covering throughout the rest of this summer and fall (with other stuff in between). But did you know he's also a peeb? A great-great-uncle, or maybe great-great grandfather, of a famous musician? An extremely weird writer who became a brain-addled bank employee at the tender age of 13? A Nathaniel Hawthorne fanboy to an uncomfortable degree?Listen for these and way more crazy true facts about ol' Hermy M. Topics include: Calvinism, robot butlers, British place-name pronunciations, horned toads, extremely heavy-handed gay innuendos, frightening new neighbors, The Detectorists, Yngwie Malmsteen, Jimmy Buffett, Meatloaf, hot southern soil, Nathaniel Hawthorne, mutinies on the high seas, skin factories, totally normal whale behavior, vagina diagrams, the original M. Dick, birth certificate confusion, perpendicular spouting, and secrets whispered under a gazebo in the pouring rain.Content warnings: death, mental illness, animal cruelty, sexual languageFurther reading: "History's Dick Jokes: On Melville and Hawthorne", by Jordan Alexander Steinhttps://lareviewofbooks.org/article/historys-dick-jokes-on-melville-and-hawthorne/ Jacob's YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/@bigyellowpraxis ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

The doctor's now set her sights on the local shape-shifter (Josh, run!) and unfortunately Tamika Flynn's proposed solution might be just as damaging as the problem has been (calling it now, if Carlos has to leave Night Vale, we riot). If all of that's a little too heavy for you, we lighten things up with a full recap of Season 3 Episode 2 of The Umbrella Academy, and a quick summary of the delightful The Detectorists. Aaaand then we bring on the heavy topics again by talking about MidJourney, its possible effects, a few cautionary suggestions, and how it might tie into the entire concept of human consciousness. And also Elizabeth's using it to make pretty pictures. Enjoy! This week's outro is a clip from Infinite Sky by TeknoAXE Looking for a present for that hard-to-shop-for person? First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on March 19th 2023 Now that the dust has settled, and the year is rapidly hurtling towards the Easter holidays, it seems like there is no better time for us to calmly sit down and have a bit of a chat about the most recent festive season. We're nothing if not topical here on VISION ON SOUND. No, really… Bear with me on this… Because, sometimes, right around the time of broadcast, it's rather difficult to fully appreciate the festive season for what it is. We get hung up on certain programmes as if they're genuinely the BEST THING EVER, but then find that, after a few weeks bitter reflection, we find that the programmes that briefly seemed so very special and shiny and new, might not have turned out to feel all that memorable after all. So, was CHRISTMAS 2022 a bit of a classic of iconic television moments, or merely another step on the inexorable journey from the giddy heights of days when CHRISTMAS TELLY felt like the hottest ticket in town down some slippery slope towards just being as “ho-hum” and monotonous as some people tend to suggest? Is the inevitable demise of linear television, and entire families gathering together to watch unforgettable programmes truly on the cards? I'm not certain we manage to get to the resolution of that during the next hour, but WARREN CUMMINGS and I did get together at the end of January to have a bit of a chat about what we found worth watching on the main channels in late December last year, and whether any of it felt truly memorable or special. Our viewing choices were surprisingly similar, so we talked a little bit about shows as diverse as MORTIMER AND WHITEHOUSE: GONE FISHING, GHOSTS, DETECTORISTS, INSIDE NUMBER NINE, Christmas Ghost Stories, crime dramas, and certain other things which at least manage to draw out one or two opinions on the state of current television programming, which I hope you'll find as entertaining to listen to as we did in recording them. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

Detectorists: Women finding treasure

The Conversation

Many of us as children dream of finding a treasure map and digging up gold and precious jewels. For some that longing never goes away. Kim Chakanetsa talks to two women from the UK and Canada who spend their free time using metal detectors to search for treasure. In November 2021, a British nurse called Elizabeth Bailey discovered a tiny gold book while out with her metal detector. She first thought it was from a charm bracelet but, engraved with two figures thought to be the patron saints of childbirth, it's believed the charm could have been given to a wealthy pregnant woman between 1280 and 1410, when it was illegal for anyone besides the nobility to own gold. Alison Walker uses her hobby of metal detecting to recover lost jewellery and keys for people around Ontario in Canada where she lives. Instead of taking a reward for finding precious belongings she asks that people 'pay-it-forward' to a breast cancer charity. She belongs to an international organisation called The Ring Finders and took up the pass-time 11 years ago after bidding for a metal detector in a charity auction.

As kids we dream about combing a beach and finding buried treasure with a metal detector, but married couple Heather and Dustin Allensworth are proving that that metal detection isn't just kid stuff on this week's Discover the Truth with Tyler Kern. Dustin started in 2018 at a hunt in Oklahoma. He says he only did “okay,” but he was able to win the gold coin at the event. “I got super excited about that,” said Dustin, “and we went to check it again the next day… and I haven't really slowed down a lot since.” Heather thought it seemed like a “cool” and “fun” hobby for Dustin at first. “When he started bringing home the things that I couldn't have because they were like his little trophies,” she explains, “I said ‘no, no, no, I need in this right now.'” Through water hunting metal detection they have been able to find a treasure trove of interesting items, including all kinds of jewelry. On the episode, Dustin shows off 14k rings, embedded with sapphires, rubies and diamonds. He also has found things like a pair of false teeth, which had the added bonus of a gold cap. Heather's favorite find is a 21k plain gold ring band, which is the highest k the couple has yet to find. Heather explains that being in Oklahoma, which she says is a “fairly young state,” there are only so many places they are allowed to go hunting for land detections, so they prefer to spend days in the water. Their children are also getting in on the act. Heather says their kids are beginning to enjoy treasure hunting with their parents. “It gets a lot of people together,” she explains, “They make friends, and it gives them a little bit of a quick challenge.” They have both recovered items during their adventures that people had lost, and they say the real joy in the process has been returning those items to people who thought they were gone forever. “It gives you that… warm fuzzy feeling that you're doing something good,” says Heather. Dustin even found a woman's class ring in a swimming hole. Her first question when he returned it, “How did you get it so clean?” Heather and Dustin also explain the items you need to properly hunt, including gloves, solid shoes and fishing hooks, along with making sure you have snacks and sustenance and pay attention and listen to the devices you use to hunt.
