How victim, villain, and helpless stories sabotage our most important conversations. The hardest conversations aren't just about what you say to the other person. According to Joseph Grenny, critical conversations begin with the stories that you tell yourself. As a leading expert on business performance and communication, and a New York Times bestselling co-author of Crucial Conversations, Grenny explains that navigating high-stakes communication starts by examining the internal narratives we bring into these situations. “You and I use three consistent types of stories in these moments that don't serve us well,” he says: Victim stories (emphasizing our innocence), villain stories (demonizing the other person), and helpless stories (justifying our poor responses). "Those three kinds of stories are what amp up our emotions and justify us in our unhealthy responses," he says.In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Grenny joins Matt Abrahams to share practical strategies for mastering difficult conversations through what he calls "TLC" — truth, love, and competence. From recognizing your motives during conflict to accepting your role in creating it, he offers tools for staying focused on what you really want rather than getting hijacked by short-term emotional impulses. To listen to the extended Deep Thinks version of this episode, please visit FasterSmarter.io/premium Episode Reference Links:Joseph GrennyJoseph's Book: Crucial Conversations  Ep.105 Radical Candor: The Communication Shift That Can Transform Your CareerEp.148 Conviction and Compassion: How to Have Hard Conversations  Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (02:16) - Influence & Why It Matters (04:15) - Truth & Love: The Foundation of Accountability (06:35) - Showing You Care & Respect Others (08:19) - Recognizing Motives in High-Stakes Moment (14:13) - Managing Emotions in Crucial Conversations (20:08) - The Final Three Questions (25:24) - Conclusion    ********This episode is sponsored by Grammarly. Over the last couple of months, I've had the opportunity to speak on communication confidence at a handful of leadership events. One of the things that has been really eye-opening for attendees is learning about the connection between their internal communication and external communication. So, I thought this would be a helpful (and fun!) topic to dig into on the pod.   Let's start with defining each of these terms. Internal communication is how you communicate with yourself. This includes the words and phrases you use and the tone of voice you use. When you're in a tough moment, do you speak to yourself with kindness, compassion, and respect? Or, do you have a tendency to beat yourself up and talk to yourself in a way you would never talk to someone else who is struggling? When you are on the cusp of making a big decision or going for something new and big, do you champion yourself by reminding yourself of your strengths, talents, and qualifications? Or, do you tell yourself you're probably not qualified, and you probably won't get what you want out of the situation?   External communication is how you communicate with others. When you are entering a high-stakes situation, do you show up with confidence and grace? Do you speak up, share ideas, and stand up for the people and issues that matter most to you in a way that calls people to take action and/or work beside you? Or, do you sit back, stay quiet, or run away the moment you sense anything uncomfortable, unpredictable, or challenging? Or, maybe you get defensive and aggressive when things don't go your way - perhaps taking on a my-way-or-the-highway attitude?   As you may suspect, our internal communication greatly impacts our external communication. If you don't have your internal communication dialed in, your external communication will probably be pretty poor, even harmful in high-stakes moments. Our internal communication patterns and habits are likely defaults that have been with us for years if not decades. In this episode, I talk through 5 ways to begin to shift your internal communication defaults in order to positively impact your external communication habits.   Bottom line… Your internal communication must be rock solid if you want your external communication to get you closer to your goals and dreams!  Resources: Join Aligned, my leadership incubator for values-driven women leaders: saradean.com/aligned Interested in becoming a sponsor of the Shameless Mom Academy? Stress can get in the way of our communication with others. To manage our stress, psychologist Jenny Taitz says, we first need to adjust the conversations that we have with ourselves.Taitz is an assistant clinical professor in psychiatry at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the author of several books, including Stress Resets: How to Soothe Your Body and Mind in Minutes. According to her, much of the stress we experience is self-created through negative thought patterns and harsh self-criticism. “We're doing this to ourselves all the time,” she says. But as we become aware of these unhelpful mental loops, Taitz' “resets” can help us disrupt them and reframe self-talk in more productive waysIn addition to changing our self-talk, Taitz offers tools for refreshing our communication with others. In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, she and host Matt Abrahams explore her G.I.V.E. framework — how being gentle, interested, validating, and easy-mannered equips us for more positive conversations with ourselves and othersEpisode Reference Links:Jenny Taitz: Website Jenny's Book: Website Communicator Jenny admires: Sharon Salzberg Ep.69 Feeling Nervous? Join André, The Impulsive Thinker, in this insightful episode of "The Impulsive Thinker Podcast," as he reflects on a profound discussion with Dan Holman in episode 267 about the delicate balance between accountability and forgiveness. He explores this continuum and its implications for both professional relationships and personal growth for the growth-minded ADHD entrepreneur. André reveals deep insights into conflict resolution and how the right mix of holding others accountable and offering forgiveness can impact our mental health and business relations. Key Points: 1. The Accountability-Forgiveness Spectrum: Breaks down the concept of finding a middle ground in conflict resolution, emphasizing that neither extreme accountability nor extreme forgiveness is conducive to healthy relationships or self-care. 2. Self-Accountability Importance: Acknowledging the challenge of self-accountability, André spotlights the natural tendency to deflect blame and the importance of owning up to one's actions to maintain personal integrity and progress. 3. Internal Dialogue and Self-Forgiveness: Gets personal about the harsh internal dialogue we often have with ourselves, urging listeners to slide towards self-forgiveness on the spectrum to foster self-compassion and personal growth. One Question For Listeners: Why does André urge listeners to shift towards forgiving themselves more and not hold on too tightly to accountability when it comes to self-evaluation? He motivates this introspection to help listeners understand that while accountability is vital for learning, excessive self-criticism can hinder growth, dampen self-esteem, and obscure the valuable lessons mistakes can teach. It's a call for listeners to strike a balance that propels them forward rather than holds them back. This episode is a gentle reminder of the power of self-reflection and finding the courage to forgive ourselves. André, The Impulsive Thinker, encourages high-achieving ADHD entrepreneurs to embrace their experiences, learn from mistakes, and allow themselves the grace to grow both personally and professionally. Get ready to dive into one of the most fascinating topics, the inner critic - that little chatterbox in your head that sometimes isn't the nicest. In this episode, I'm peeling back the layers to reveal how this inner voice, often dubbed the inner critic (or some not-so-nice names), is seriously misunderstood. Here's the thing; this internal chatter isn't just background noise, it's a powerful tool for self-discovery. When we understand it, it becomes our biggest ally, shedding light on our limitations. We'll go into the roots of this voice, tucked away in our unconscious mind, which is directing a whopping 95% of our actions and thoughts - our beliefs, values, and memories are all connected to this inner dialogue.I also speak about the law of polarity and how it's linked to our inner voice. Whilst you may want to shut that voice down, rejecting our inner voice is like rejecting a part of ourselves. I touch on why it's crucial to embrace and integrate this voice for the sake of self-acceptance and alignment. FREE NLP Masterclass - Introduction to NLP and Time Line Therapy®Essential Foundations of NLP Diploma Accredited NLP Practitioner - 12-Week Online ProgrammeFREE Manifestation Masterclass - How to Create Your Reality from the Inside OutMy Book - Activate Your RAS - The Art & Science of Creating Your Reality from the Inside Out Forgiveness Meditation 1:1 Coaching - Book A Free 20-minute Call With Me FREE Guide - Get Started Before You Feel Ready Roadmap - Discover 5 Steps to Step Outside of Your Comfort and Take Bold Action so you can Achieve Your Goals with More Ease Connect with me @iamsianhill

I am excited to bring back someone who has become a podcast staple on ‘The Imagination': Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, Certified Sex Offender Treatment Provider, Licensed Professional Counselor, Founder of Survivor Support, Podcast host of own podcast and channel, @JonKUhlerLPC, on YouTube, father of 3, husband to his high school sweetheart, survivor advocate, and someone you all heavily requested to bring back: Jon Uhler. In case you are new here or missed Jon's briefing on his background on the first episode we did together, here is a short recap of Jon's many accolades and credentials: Jon's work began over 30 years ago, and the evolution of his career path is nothing short of astonishing. His education includes attending Epic Bible College, Biola University, Talbot School of Theology, and California State University, and Fullerton. He's worked in both clinical and administrative capacities, outpatient and hospital settings, intensive day treatment settings, residential treatment programs, and in secure (locked) facilities - including over 11 years on Psychology Staff within the Pennsylvania Dept. of Corrections where he's logged more clinical contact hours within Solitary Confinement than any Psych Staff in the entire US. Prior to his work with incarcerated men, he spent years working with sexual abuse Survivors, and treating Severely Emotionally Disturbed adolescents in group homes and within the largest intensive psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility for troubled youth west of the MIssissippi. When Jon is not providing professional therapy or podcasting, he serves in an advocacy role, toward helping increase safety for vulnerable women and minors, who are being placed in harm's way by those pushing dangerous ideologies, public policies, and legislation. Jon has been doing a series of extremely valuable episodes on ‘The Imagination' around the topics of therapy for survivors, what to expect going into therapy as a survivor, working with patients with dissociative identity disorder, the path to healing for wounded warriors, and most recently - learning about a survivor's internal system through a brilliant presentation he created that we will be diving deeper into today. This series has gotten such incredible feedback and has become a valuable resource for survivors, therapists and advocates to learn about the intricacies of complex trauma and the appropriate routes to take for healing and getting help. There is a lack of compassion and understanding in therapeutic academia fortherapists who may come across survivors of satanic ritual abuse, mind control and extreme abuse and Jon's work over the last couple decades is helping to paint a bright and hopeful picture for the therapeutic community as a whole to understand what universities and traditional academia has left unsaid about how trauma actually impacts the body and mind. It also gives me hope that this series will help empower survivors to feel confident going into therapy with the tools Jon provides to help identify therapists who are ready to help along with questions to ask and a general idea of what to expect. Jon is so brave to step up and help us with these deep understandings and I ask you all to please grab a pen and paper and give Jon your full attention as we will be learning a ton today!  CONNECT WITH JON:YouTube:  Jon Uhler - YouTube &  UnMaskingTheTransMovement - YouTubeWebsites:-Home | survivorsupport-WELCOME TO - Unmasking TheSupport the show

Shandel and Melanie discuss the signs and dangers of falling into an "unhealthy cycle of misery" as a leader. They explore how fear, insecurity, and a lack of humility can disconnect leaders from their values and damage relationships with their team. However, they emphasize that recognizing when you've gone off track is the first step to getting back to purposeful, values-aligned growth.Key Takeaways:Pay attention to your internal dialogue, as it can provide insights into where you are in your leadership growth and when you may have fallen into a "Cycle of Misery."Don't be too hard on yourself if you recognize unhealthy patterns - the important thing is to take responsibility and get back on track as quickly as possible.Look out for signs like a lack of humility, fear of being wrong, blaming others, and disconnect from feedback from your team. These can indicate a disconnect from your values.Avoid being too busy "doing stuff" instead of prioritizing what really matters. Reframe excuses around not having time.Be open to pruning less effective practices, even ones you've "always done," rather than doubling down on the past.Personal stories can help identify unconscious patterns so you don't justify bad behaviors for the sake of success alone. Thanks for joining us - don't forget to subscribe, rate (or like), comment & share!Visit our website and follow us on social media - Facebook, Instagram & LinkedInWe LOVE your feedback & questions - click HERE to share your questions/feedback or email us at podcast@shandelgroup.comSubscribe for our free 66 Seconds with Shandel Group at shandel.com#LeadForClarity #LeadershipDevelopment #Leadership #Growth #ExecutiveCoaching #LeadershipCoaching #EmotionalIntelligence #Clarity #PersonalAccountability #Communication

Can we truly redefine our relationship with food? That's the provocative question we're exploring with Jane Pilger, host of the ‘Binge Breakthrough' podcast and a dedicated binge eating coach.  Drawing from deeply personal experiences, Jane shares her journey, her struggles, and ultimately her triumph, giving us all hope that we can do the same. She speaks candidly about the guilt and secrecy that shrouded her early encounters with binge eating and how understanding her nervous system played a pivotal role in her victory. We explore the undercurrents of binge eating, seeing it not merely as a disorder, but as a symptom of disconnection from our experiences. Jane exposes how diet culture conditions us to ignore our body's signals, leading to a profound disconnection from our own selves.  We venture into the realm of perfectionism, discussing how our relentless chase for an 'ideal body' can trigger unhealthy eating habits and constant nervous system activation. Listen as Jane enlightens us on the power of internal dialogue, transforming it from a relentless critic to an ally in our journey towards healthier eating. Join us as we navigate the intricate network of our nervous system, understanding its three states - fight/flight, freeze, and home base, and their role in binge eating. Jane shares her realization that her binges were essentially her body's desperate plea for pause, forcing her to slow down and break free from the onslaught of stress and perfectionism.  We dive into the potential of shifting our mindset, understanding that shame and judgment can exacerbate unhealthy eating habits. Jane leaves us with resources for those seeking help, emphasizing the importance of understanding our internal dialogue and how our nervous system influences our behavior. Together, let's redefine our relationship with food and reclaim the joy of eating! About Jane: Jane Pilger is a Master Certified Coach who specializes in empowering women struggling with food and body image issues to break through their barriers and cultivate food freedom and body trust. With a focus on helping clients who have battled with these challenges for years, Jane guides them in finding the missing link to shift from fighting against their bodies to working in harmony with them.  Whether it's addressing binge eating, building trust around certain foods, or understanding the root causes of their behaviors, Jane offers support and guidance to bring about lasting change. Alongside her coaching work, Jane finds joy in spending time with loved ones, engaging in triathlon training and racing, and embarking on new adventures.  She is driven by her desire to make a positive impact on those around her and to live a life rooted in love, trust, adventure, and personal growth. My guest is Sam Harris, Ph.D. Sam earned his bachelor's degree in philosophy from Stanford University and his doctorate (Ph.D.) in neuroscience from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He is the author of multiple best-selling books and is a world-renowned public-facing intellectual on meditation, consciousness, free will, psychedelics and neuroscience. He is also the creator of Waking Up and the host of the Making Sense podcast. In this episode, we discuss meditation as a route to understanding “the self” and experiencing consciousness, not just changing one's conscious state. Sam describes several meditation techniques and their benefits, including how meditation fundamentally changes our worldview and how it can be merged seamlessly into daily life. It can help us overcome universal challenges such as distractibility and persistent, internal dialogue (“chatter”) to allow for deep contentment and pervasive shifts in our awareness, all while acknowledging the more immediate stress-lowering and memory-improving effects of meditation. We also discuss the therapeutic use of psychedelics and the mechanistic similarities between the benefits of a psychedelic journey and long-term meditation practices. And we discuss the rationale behind Sam's recent decision to close his social media (Twitter) account. This episode should interest anyone wanting to learn more about the higher order functions of the brain, the brain-body connection, consciousness and, of course, meditation and why and how to meditate for maximum benefit.
