The stigma of mental illness is reflected in Regina, a social worker who contends with her own mental illness diagnosis and its implications for working in the field. Having been let go from a few jobs, she raises the ethical dilemma of disclosure: the pathologizing impact vs. the potential for accomodations. Where is the boundary or adaptation in the social work profession regarding embracing employees who may be struggling with the same disorders as those we treat? Regina shares her personal experience navigating her BiPolar II disorder and calls to action the need for societal awareness and social work advocacy.

One of the reasons that I originally went into sociology, and doing ethnographic research, is learning about people's stories. We are a species that likes stories, and likes hearing about people's stories. I think this is why “human of New York” is as popular as it is. People have their stories rooted in their lives and experiences. And when it comes to entrepreneurs and business, the ideas they come up with often are closely tied to those lives. This is what makes doing the podcast so much fun. I get to talk with people who have lived fascinating lives and come up with creative and inspired ideas to make people's lives better. To me, this is the essential part of experience design: making lives better for people using our own experiences, knowledge, and passions as the basis for our designs.Today's episode is no different. I had the pleasure of speaking with Diamond Drip. One of the chief questions we explore is “what is our authentic self”, and “how do we get in touch with it?” with all of the social distractions and noise filling our head on a regular basis. Those external distractions can be coupled with the internal challenges that we all face. For Diamond, part of this journey involved her dealing with Bipolar II, and using psilocybin as part of a clinical trial. The impacts of this trial lead her to realize her dream and passion for human design. The manner in which she approaches human design is through thinking about what we put out into the world, especially our energy. She was always told that her energy was contagious. She came to learn the importance of energy alignment when we are doing things that we are meant to do. We need to learn to lead from within in order to align our energy and our actions. We also talk about her time in the Air Force, working at a gym, her background in Graphic Design, and getting tired of not being the leading lady in her life. She describes how other leading ladies in her life, like her Aunt, helped to instill a belief in herself and her potential. And believing in ourselves in a message that we can all relate to. On the podcast Hyperfixed, host Alex Goldman sets out to solve mysteries and conundrums that listeners submit. But he's found himself having to do some figuring out for himself. Alex finally got diagnosed with ADHD just a few years ago, when he was around 42 years old. Which was a big relief after years of struggling with things like attention and task completion. The problem was that the meds they gave him triggered hypomania followed by big depressive crashes, resulting in a diagnosis of bipolar disorder type II. So now Alex has to manage depression, ADHD, and hypomania. I talk about loosening the grip on your identity being your mental health or illness. We then talk about saying you're sorry rather than being defensive when someone brings something up that they saw as hurtful. Sometimes we defend and try to prove we are always "good" which can lead to just hurting the person more and leaving you disconnected!!We answer a dear abbey question about when you are anxiously attached to your partner due to abandonment wounds.Call 909-817-1742 to leave a “Dear Abbey” voicemail or leave a text with a question or asking for advice!!Love you guys!

Holly Crumpler joins Paul to talk about living with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). Holly shares her journey to being diagnosed with DID, how she and her family manage it, and her frustration with how it's been represented in TV and film. Holly and Paul are also joined by Holly's son, Dylan, who offers perspective on what it's like to grow up as a child of DID and how his mother's diagnosis helped him make sense of things. For an accurate representation of this disorder, check out Holly & Dylan's short film, Petals of a Rose.More about Holly/DylanFollowing is the link where you can watch the 15 minute film and learn more about its impact:https://www.dylancrumpler.com/petals-of-a-rosePlease consider rating and reviewing Petals of a Rose on IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt19715926Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PetalsofaRoseTheMovieInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/petalsofarose_themovie/A note from Holly about our conversation I am not a therapist and I am only sharing my personal experience of living with DID. Additionally, it is important to note that each person who has DID experiences it in a personal, unique way, and I am only sharing my own lived experience.Further, it might be helpful to share that even though you have not featured many people on your show with DID, it is not a rare condition. In fact, research shows that at least 1.5% of people live with DID and a greater percentage live with other dissociative disorders. In comparison, following are the frequency of mental health conditions (in descending order) for people in the US per the DSM-V: Dissociative Identity Disorder: 1.5%Bulimia: 1.0 – 1.5%OCD: 1.2%Bipolar II: .4 - 1.0%Schizophrenia: .3 - .7%Bipolar I: .6%Anorexia: .4%WAYS TO HELP THE MIHH PODCASTSubscribe via iTunes and leave a review. Ketogenic diets are emerging as an exciting new alternative treatment for bipolar disorder and other psychiatric conditions. Many people may see remission of their psychiatric symptoms and may be able to reduce or eliminate their intake of psychiatric medications. Dr. Iain Campbell, a researcher who lives with Bipolar II, collected survey data from over 100 individuals treating their bipolar disorder with ketogenic therapy. While the data are not at the same level as randomized controlled trials, the results are amazingly encouraging and indicate a substantial improvement in people's quality of life. This week Licensed therapist Kati Morton discusses what to do when our medication numbs out our feelings. She also explains why therapists disclose certain information and when that's inappropriate. Then she digs into the difference between rumination and over thinking, why we have to grieve something we never had, and why we can close our eyes in therapy. Finally, she talks about dating with a mental illness and why DBT can be so confusing. Questions for Ask Kati Anything episode 194: 1. I have been diagnosed with BPD, Bipolar II, CPTSD and anxiety. I recently stopped taking my mood stabilizer because it numbs my feelings. I just started EMDR with my therapist and she indicated that I should probably go back on the mood stabilizer because my feelings are so intense and out of control. My thinking is that if I numb my feelings then the EMDR won't work. 2. In my last therapy session my therapist told me she recently had a client commit suicide. She disclosed that info to say that she wasn't fully present so we were only going to be checking in before the holiday. That was ok, but I feel really really bad for her. That can't be easy. I felt like I should say something to her, but I didn't know what to say. From a therapist's perspective, is there anything I can do or say to her? 3. I am so thankful for your videos and how you break things down in a simplified form. I'm hoping you can do this for my question. Could you please explain the difference between RUMINATING VS OVER THINKING? I've been an over thinker as far back as I can remember. It's both a blessing and a curse! I can create detailed stories in my mind and play them out, much like others watching TV. Mostly, I find I over think on conflict as I will replay the scene on repeat. 4. How can I live with the grief that certain times in my life will never come back, especially when these are times of childhood which could have been joyful or lighthearted and instead were deeply affected by trauma? How do we heal wounds of "missing" something that we can never bring back because of the time that is gone? 5. Just wondering why I shut my eyes in therapy and whether you have witnessed this in therapy? I notice when therapy gets too much or hard I close my eyes and can't seem to stop myself doing this no matter how much I try. Am I just weird and how do I stop this? Any advice? Thanks Kati 6. I met my girlfriend on an ED ward. I'm out and doing well but she's still there and struggling. Do you think our relationship can work? I really love her. Xx7. I've been doing DBT in therapy and it's getting confusing. How do I tell my therapist that I'm confused by it all and how do I know it's working, can u please answer? MY BOOKS Traumatized Are u ok? Hello, friends! I hope everyone is doing well. In today's episode, we dive into the following awesome listener questions: Our first question comes from a listener whose partner was diagnosed with ADHD in childhood. They're now wondering if they might also have Bipolar II, as they experience random bouts of depression and "good days" that may potentially be hypomanic episodes. The listener questions if these mood swings could be catalyzed by situational factors or if they are indeed random. We'll unpack the complexities of distinguishing between ADHD and Bipolar II, discussing the different symptoms, overlaps, and possible courses of action to consider. Our second question comes from a listener who's been grappling with deep existential thoughts about the concept of the "soul," particularly relating to individuals who die by suicide. They wonder about possible repercussions in potential afterlife scenarios, despite not being particularly religious. They ponder on possibilities like reincarnation, memory erasure, or even punishment. In response to this question, we'll delve into the intersections of spirituality, mental health, and coping with such existential concerns, while emphasizing the importance of empathy and compassion in our understanding of such tragic events. As always, if you have questions or topics you'd like discussed on the show, please send them to duffthepsych@gmail.com. The diagnosis of bipolar disorder is a modern concept. Manic depressive episodes have historically been rare. Once recognized in approximately 1 in every 5,000 people, it has since ballooned to a nearly 5% prevalence rate over the last 50 years. Further expansion into children and the creation of Bipolar II places more people at risk of misdiagnosis. On today's podcast we discuss bipolar disorder. If you are in a crisis or think you have an emergency, call your doctor or 911. On today's episode of Off the Cuff with Danny LoPriore, social media content creator, mental health nurse practitioner, and psychotherapist Dr. Kojo Sarfo, DNP, PMHNP-BC, joins me to talk about how his journey with ADHD turned him into a rockstar and influenced his career path as well as why it's important to make mental health fun and accessible through social media. “I don't like regular mental halth content; kinda like when I was in school and talk to the psychiatrist for hours and be like, “what's the difference between Bipolar I and Bipolar II,” and we'd have to sit down and do lectures. That's not fun, right? So, people have to digest it in fun and relatable ways.” (3:02) We chat about the importance of making mental health topics entertaining and relatable, how culture can influence how you deal with mental health issues, the flaws within the education system in terms of providing the right environment for those with mental health disorders, and how sometimes medications are essential despite the potential for abuse and side effects. “God is good, but with medicine combined…you're superhuman. I gotta put that on a shirt. Sometimes, you just need the meds.” (30:54) He also shares his takes on the political landscape, balancing the intricacies of comedy with being offensive, and working mental health struggles into comedy and social media content in a way that is authentic. “Let's have conversations about everything, because everybody deserves to be able to voice their opinion.” (53:05) In This Episode: (1:27) The origins of Dr. Sarfo's Late Night Show concept (3:58) Dr. Sarfo's journey from Ghana to Norway to the United States and culture shock (5:22) Dr. Sarfo coming to terms with having ADHD (7:00) The pressures of being forced into a profession within an African household (11:17) An academic glow-up for the books: a failure in high school to college scholar (17:55) The struggles of navigating the education system with mental health disorders (29:18) How trauma can compound over time (31:00) Sometimes medication is the answer - despite the abuse and side effects (33:44) What's the difference between a psychiatrist, psychologist, and psychotherapist? (36:28) Should you be mandated to see a therapist if you work in the mental health space? (40:18) The current state of mental health for Black Americans/Black Immigrants (46:35) Social media as a powerful tool to be used by mental health, polititcs, and more. (51:15) Adapting to how you need to say things in today's climate (56:23) Comedy lets you have your cake and eat it too (59:20) Danny teaches Dr. Kojo how to fucking dominate comedy (1:05:20) How Danny contributes to the art of comedy (1:13:30) Why do women not get diagnosed as much with ADHD? (1:16:02) How to spot emotional abuse Our Guest Dr. Kojo Sarfo is a mental health nurse practitioner, social media content creator, and psychotherapist. He is also the host of Late Night w/Dr. Kojo, a weekly live stream on Facebook. After spending his life coping with ADHD, Dr. Kojo decided to use those experiences to help others and talk about mental health issues in innovative ways using social media and comedy. Through his social media accounts, Facebook live streams, and stand-up routines, he is blazing a path for mental health professionals to connect with people in meaningful ways. Today's show takes a look at postpartum depression through a firsthand account of the struggle to understand and heal. My guest is another example that finding just the right therapy makes all the difference because the same treatment modalities don't work for everyone. Join us for Amanda's inspiring story. Amanda Cunningham is a Pop/R&B singer-songwriter, wife, and mother of a 10-year-old daughter. Songwriting and singing provide her with an outlet to put her oversharing to good use, letting others know that it's okay to poke fun at your imperfections and the trauma you've gone through and grown from. Amanda has struggled with mental health throughout her life, most recently having been diagnosed with Bipolar II, and she's here to share her postpartum depression story and her journey to find healing. She shares helpful insights about her feelings of guilt and what it's like to live in the “fog” of mental health issues. Amanda and I hope that her story can be an avenue of healing for others in similar situations. Show Highlights: An overview of Amanda's chaotic life and mental health struggles when she got pregnant at age 19 How Amanda had virtually no help or support when her daughter was born How the first two years of motherhood were a blur of mental fog for Amanda that she didn't realize until years later How Amanda's Bipolar II diagnosis came in recent months, confirming what she suspected about her mental health issues Why it's a massive flaw in our standard postpartum care for healthcare providers not to ask more about how a new mother is coping Why Amanda started therapy when her daughter was a few years old How Amanda found music as part of her healing and recovery Why it's easier to look back with a new perspective when enough time has passed What Amanda has learned about her journey Amanda's advice to others in similar situations Resources: Connect with Amanda and hear her music: Website, Instagram, and TikTok Visit my website, www.wellmindperinatal.com, for more information, resources, and courses you can take today!
