Why do so many adults with ADHD struggle with alcohol, even when they know it's not helping them? In this episode, Lynne Edris talks with Colleen Freeland about the powerful connection between ADHD, dopamine, nervous system regulation, and alcohol use. They explore: • Why ADHD brains often seek relief through alcohol and other coping behaviors • The difference between drinking for pleasure and drinking for relief • How dopamine and urgency drive unhealthy patterns • Why shame keeps us stuck • How to build healthier responses to stress and overwhelm • The mindset shift that makes lasting change possible Whether alcohol is your challenge—or whether your coping mechanism looks more like procrastination, scrolling, shopping, or overworking—this conversation will help you better understand your brain and create change with more compassion and less self-judgment. Colleen Freeland is an Intuitive Drinking Coach and host of the globally top-ranked It's Not About the Alcohol podcast. Colleen founded Emotional Sobriety Coaching© for high achieving professional women who want to reduce alcohol consumption by 80 percent. She combines holistic and evidence-based strategies in Neurophysiology, Cognitive Reframing, and Spirituality to reprogram the mind and body - so you actually prefer drinking in moderation. Feeling overwhelmed is incredibly common for adults with ADHD—but the real cause might not be what you think. In this episode, ADHD Coach Lynne Edris explores why overwhelm often comes from too much noise and not enough clarity. Learn how simple systems for planning, calendars, and task management can create the clarity your brain needs to stay focused, reduce procrastination, and follow through on what matters most. Lynne notes that when people come to her for help, three challenges show up again and again: overwhelm, procrastination, and the painful feeling of not living up to their potential. Lynne refers to these three struggles as the ADHD trifecta, because they're so closely connected. When overwhelm creeps in, procrastination often follows. And when those two take hold, it becomes much harder to follow through consistently in a way that reflects what you're truly capable of. The real antidote is clarity. When you have clarity about what matters, what needs to happen next, and where to focus your attention, it becomes much easier to take action and move forward without getting stuck. In This Episode, You'll Learn • Why overwhelm is so common for adults with ADHD • How overwhelm, procrastination, and unmet potential are connected • Why the root of overwhelm is often noise and lack of clarity • Practical ways to create clarity using your calendar and task systems • How to recognize your personal signs that overwhelm is creeping in Take the Productivity Breakthrough Quiz If you'd like help identifying what's really getting in the way of your productivity and follow-through, take Lynne's quick assessment: www.ProductivityBreakthroughQuiz.com In just a few minutes, you'll discover your unique productivity type and gain insight into what's actually getting in the way—so you can stop spinning your wheels, take control of your time, and show up more consistently at the level of your potential. PRE-ORDER the upcoming book now: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/the-bookWe aren't gonna tell you how to fix ADD/ADHD. (Spoiler alert, you or your loved one don't need fixing.) We are, however, going to teach our 6-month group on how to relate to ADHD, in yourself or in someone else. The actual problem is a societal standard our brain wasn't designed for. In this podcast we are talking about months 3 & 4 of the slow group curriculum. We will explore navigating overwhelm, and our capacity versus our desire. Modern society rewards our working beyond our capacity, forcing many of us to burnout and collapse. No wonder it's even more difficult to not fit the standard productivity mold that shames so many patterns of ADHD brain types. The slow group will learn how to assess, then tend to, capacity. Instead of living from desire, an inherently dominating pattern, we can start to honor the ebb and flow of our capacity. An important element is finding our unique motivators, based in pleasure and interest, as willpower does not provide the dopamine to motivate an ADHD brain.  Also discussed will be relationships, from the perspective of the person with ADHD, or from the perspective of being in relationship with the person with ADHD. Camille and Luis talk about how they navigate their family relationships when different brains need different systems from each other to thrive. You can register for the FREE Food Therapy session here: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/events/recover-from-burnout You can read more about, and register for, Camille's Embodying My Cycles & Rhythms 6-month group here: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/cycles-and-rhythms-slow-group You can read more about, and register for, the Embodied ADHD 6-month program, here: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/slow-practice-adhd----You can learn more on the website: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/ You can follow Luis on Instagram @holistic.life.navigationQuestions? PRE-ORDER the upcoming book now: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/the-bookAt the age of nine Luis was diagnosed with ADHD. He never medicated with pharmaceuticals: instead his drugs of choice were coffee, cigarettes, and a stimulating diet. Over the years Luis has learned how to reduce the stimulants needed to keep him engaged. ADD/ADHD is when there is not enough dopamine getting to the brain, usually because of low levels of brain and gut, or vagus nerve inflammation. People in this situation are sometimes referred to as “bored”, “lazy”, or "depressed", as a body collapses in to functional freeze. Camille and Luis discuss the upcoming 6-month ADHD Slow Group starting April 7th. It begins with learning to relate to the ADHD nervous system, overcouplings and judgments about ADHD behaviors, animism of the body, overwhelm, dopamine, relationships and finally cultivating a fascinating life. They will also teach how to leverage balancing foods, and how to consciously use stimulants. The gift of ADHD is a low capacity for bullsh*t, or as Luis calls it RITC, a Radical Inability To Conform. Instead of seeing it as a disorder, we see it as the dopamine deficiency that it is, so that we can learn to relate to in a healthier way. Parenting a child who goes from calm to chaos in seconds can feel exhausting. You try everything—deep breaths, gentle words, even walking away—and still, the meltdowns come. You're not alone. When kids struggle with big emotions, there's often a hidden root cause inside the body—and minerals play a much bigger role than most parents realize. In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Aaron Hartman to unpack the powerful connection between minerals, mitochondria, and meltdowns—and how nutrition, lifestyle, and nervous system regulation can help your child regain balance and calm. Why does my child melt down when they're “just tired or hungry”?When your child seems to unravel at the smallest thing, it's not bad behavior—it's biology. Mineral imbalances directly affect how their nervous system fires.Low magnesium or zinc deficiency can make the brain more reactive to stress. When blood sugar drops from skipping meals or eating too many processed foods, the body burns through nutrients fast—leading to irritability, anxiety, or panic attacks.A deficient diet full of additives and low in whole foods affects serotonin, dopamine, and other key neurotransmitters. When we calm the brain first and nourish the body, meltdowns start to fade.Takeaway: A balanced diet rich in real food, protein, and calming minerals helps stabilize your child's emotions and energy.Need quick relief while you work on those root causes? Try Quick Calm—my proven method to calm the brain fast so you and your child can reset and start fresh.Could my child's mood swings be linked to mineral deficiencies?Absolutely. Research continues to show how essential minerals affect mental well-being and brain function. Here's what parents need to know:Zinc deficiency is linked with attention deficit disorder (ADD/ADHD), depression, and poor immune function.Magnesium supports relaxation and sleep by calming overactive neurons.B vitamins and vitamin D play a critical role in serotonin production—affecting mood and focus.Too much copper or exposure to heavy metals can worsen anxiety, aggression, and brain fog.HTMA testing (Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis) can reveal these hidden imbalances, helping you target the root cause instead of chasing symptoms.

Treat ADHD, lower Alzheimer's risk? The episode explores emerging evidence that simply having ADD/ADHD raises lifetime Alzheimer's risk—yet appropriately treating it in adults, often with low-dose stimulants, seems to push that risk back down. How can the same class of drugs be both feared as “brain-burning” and yet potentially brain-saving—and what does that mean for people already in midlife?Treating prostate cancer successfully with--testosterone? Listeners are introduced to a first-in-oncology “directed evolution” case in metastatic prostate cancer, led by Dr. Lemanne's team, where high-dose testosterone was deliberately used to expand treatment-sensitive cells—and only then was hormone blockade re-introduced. But did this radical, counterintuitive maneuver actually work?Emotional trauma in youth as a hidden Alzheimer's driver? Dr. Gordon discusses links between youth emotional trauma to higher rates of Alzheimer's decades later, even in people who appear to have “moved on.” Is this just correlation, or should early emotional trauma be considered a subtle form of brain injury that can and should be addressed?Do you go to bed later on weekends, by just 1-2 hours, but make up for it by rising later?  If so, you'll want to know that you may be increasing your risk of breast or prostate cancer.  This episode explores that research.Have you heard of the new Alzheimer's blood tests, that improve as the patient improves, allowing better direction of treatment? Dr. Gordon walks us through the ATN panel (amyloid-beta, p-tau, neurofilament light), now accessible through routine laboratory tests, along with galectin-3 as a tau-clustering, inflammation-linked marker, and a new infusion drug (TB006) targeting that pathway. The Brain Fitness Coach: Judy Hahn's Science of Stress Recovery On this episode of the Make Mental Health Matter Show with host Kelli Melissa Reinhardt, with special guest Judy Hahn. Little bit about Judy's story from her:  My fascination with brain health and entrainment began over 37 years ago. Today, that passion is my primary focus. I now help individuals and practitioners support brain fitness, stress recovery, and nervous system regulation using non-invasive, science-based tools that spark real, measurable change.  I work with two core technologies: ~ A brain fitness device that uses light and sound to gently guide the brain into optimal states for relaxation, focus, deep sleep, and emotional regulation. It supports neuroplasticity, cognitive performance, and long-term brain health. ~ NeuralChek, an HRV-based tool that measures the variation between heartbeats to assess the health of the body's regulatory systems. It provides real-time insight into stress load, recovery capacity, and overall adaptability — making it ideal for personalized wellness plans and tracking long-term progress. Together, these tools offer a comprehensive approach to brain-body balance, stress management, and nervous system optimization. What excites me most is how seamlessly they complement the work of chiropractors, integrative doctors, and other holistic practitioners, but so many individuals use the in-home device for anxiety, PTSD, ADD/ADHD, autism, concussion recovery, poor sleep, cognitive decline, addiction, and more. It's also widely used by peak performers seeking an edge in focus, clarity, and recovery. Short bio: Judy Hahn was trained as an Integrative Nutritional Health Coach and has spent 7 years as a Functional Wellness Coach, often addressing the gut-brain connection of her clients' conditions. She is known as The Brain Fitness Coach working with an innovative in-home brain health device that reduces stress & anxiety, and better sleep, mood & mental clarity. She is currently working with many medical professionals, chiropractors and mental health providers to be able to offer this device to a greater number of individuals and clinics. Rethinking ADHD: Root Causes, Real Healing, and the Power of Functional Medicine

ADHD and other brain-based conditions such as depression, autism, and even schizophrenia are increasingly understood as inflammatory disorders of the brain—deeply rooted in the complex interplay between genetics, environment, and lifestyle. Many individuals go undiagnosed for years, internalizing harmful labels like “lazy” or “difficult,” until the weight of unaddressed symptoms finally becomes too much. But there is hope: Functional Medicine offers a radically different approach by uncovering and addressing root causes such as nutritional deficiencies, gut microbiome imbalances, food sensitivities, toxin exposures, and lifestyle factors. Stories of transformation emerge when these root drivers are corrected—children once labeled disruptive begin to thrive, adults regain focus and emotional balance, and families find relief. This emerging paradigm offers not just symptom management but the possibility of genuine healing through personalized, whole-body care. In this episode, I discuss, along with Dr. George Papanicolaou and Dr. Jaquel Patterson, how ADHD and other mental health challenges are often rooted in inflammation and imbalances in the body—and how addressing diet, lifestyle, and root causes can lead to real healing. Dr. Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive personal care, Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health—a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. In August 2017, I invited Dr. Papanicolaou to join The UltraWellness Center and we've been successfully helping people together ever since. Dr. Jaquel Patterson is a nationally recognized naturopathic physician, success coach, three-time Amazon bestselling author, and Forbes contributor. She owns a successful medical practice, Fairfield Family Health in Connecticut, and brings over 16 years of clinical experience, specializing in Lyme disease, autoimmune conditions, integrative psychiatry, and environmental medicine. A sought-after speaker, Dr. Patterson has been featured in USA Today, New York Magazine, and Forbes, and on CBS, Fox, NBC, and ABC. She's the past president of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians and currently serves on the board of the American Academy of Environmental Medicine. Certified by the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM), she's also completed a fellowship in functional medicine with a focus on psychiatry and ADD/ADHD. In addition to her naturopathic medical degree, Dr. Patterson holds an MBA in Healthcare Management from Quinnipiac University and an undergraduate degree from Cornell University. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks…   John: I wanted to know if you have any info on bpc 157 thats all over the internet thanks                                                  Jessica: Hi Dr. Cabral, First, thank you for sharing your knowledge and for all that you do! I was skeptical of naturopathy, but you have made a believer out of me. With a few podcasts and diet changes, my life has been changing for the better. Question about a new supplement that I recently heard about called Stasis. I was diagnosed with ADD/ADHD in the first grade. I am now 32yrs old and have been on medication since then. Recently, I heard about a supplement. Have you heard of this? If so, what are your thoughts?                                                                                                                Charlene: Hi thank you for all your help. I was wondering if you had any info about caffeine and mood. I stopped all caffeine for a time but every now and then I have a regular coffee and my mood seems better on those days. Is there anything I can do to help not need caffeine to be in a good mood?                                                                                                      Lilian: Hello Dr. Cabral, thank you for all you do! I have been struggling with the DNS flavor, it is incredibly sweet. I have seen many posts on the support group of people having the same problem and struggling with it. Many have tried the spices and all the other recommendation. My question is: do you think at some point there will be an unflavored, unsweet DNS powder available? I know Michelle has said that the flavor of the vitamins would be prevalent, but I really would rather have that than the sweetness in it. Besides, if we would add greens and blueberries/fruit that would not be an issue. Are there any chances that there will be one made? Please!                                                                                                                                    Shawn: My sister-in-law was recently diagnosed with small vessel polyigitis. She's in her late 50's, and overall she is very healthy... works out, stays active and eats healthy. What course of treatment/recommendations would you suggest for her? Thank you! In this episode of The Next Level Health & Fitness Podcast (formerly The Key Nutrition Podcast), Craig and I dive into the growing conversation around ADHD diagnosis. Craig, a licensed clinical therapist, has worked with countless individuals diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, and through his experience, he's discovered that not everyone who receives this diagnosis truly has it. Before jumping to labels and medication, he believes in first addressing key health and wellness factors that can play a massive role in focus, attention, and overall mental health.   We also break down a powerful mental health supplement stack that can help support cognitive function, mood, and focus—things that everyone, diagnosed or not, can benefit from. If you've ever wondered whether you (or someone you know) really have ADHD or if other lifestyle and nutrition factors are at play, this is an episode you won't want to miss.   At the end of the episode, I also share an exciting new case study I'm running with a group of dads looking to get in great shape while balancing the challenges of fatherhood, partnership, and life.
