Dan Barwick joins Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger on California Wine Country this week to talk about his impending return to England. He has been on CWC several times in recent years, the last time was this episode last August. He is one of the founders and the winemaker for Trecini Winery. They made their first Sauvignon Blanc in 1999. Dan has brought a New Zealand wine, a 2022 Babich Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough. It cost $4.99 at Bottle Barn. It's not a great wine but for $4.99 it's fine. There's no such thing as a terrible wine, as long as it's reasonably priced enough. - Dan Berger. Dan was born in Dover, England and worked at Harrod's London in the food hall where he saw a lot of wine. He moved to Sonoma in 1991 and has been making wine for thirty years. But he is moving back to England. They have a Chardonnay to taste, which is Russian River, 2022, barrel fermented in 500 liter neutral oak. It's one of his favorite Chardonnays that he has ever made. Clean crisp and immensely complex. Dan Berger says it will still improve with age, or even time in decanter. England is on the horizon, in particular the county of Kent where The Wine Garden of England is getting warmer and warmer. It is champagne country, says Dan Berger. The English have started making some great sparkling wines and they have one today. It is a non-vintage brut from Chapel Down. Dan Barwick tells the story that the timing was right to move back to England, for a combination of reasons. Dan Berger says that it is an exciting moment for English wine and that it is a well-timed move. They are tasting the wine from Chapel Down. It is made to emulate the style of Champagne and is "gorgeous." 16:00 What Dan Barwick Will Bring Back to England In England, Dan Barwick will do some consulting and will be able to bring all of his experience from California. He has already begun networking. He found an old friend he hadn't seen for forty years who says he has vineyards and asked if Dan could help him. Prospects are good. 23:00 Dan Berger: US Wine Consumer wine knowledge essentially zero. You have to hear Dan Berger speak truth to the people about how the average American wine consumer has zero knowledge of wine and what goes with what. It starts with his deadpan hilarious observation of Chardonnay on every table in a famous Chinese restaurant, where he was having the Gewurtztraminer.
Glamorous mother-daughter duo Nazaret Teclesambet and Favian Sutton created The Wine Garden on Baltimore Ave in 2019 as a space where women can relax, feel comfortable, and treat themselves - though all are welcome in the family-friendly space. The Wine Garden is open in the summer, but this year, they're doing their first winter experience - a Black Girl Magic Holiday Pop-Up at annex. at the Divine Lorraine Hotel. This was something we had to see (and taste) for ourselves! Racquel Williams and Shara Dae Howard took the show on the road to see the space, try some specialty drinks, and hear about the history of the Divine Lorraine that inspired this celebratory pop-up. We're celebrating at TM&TM Towers. Our valiant leader, who is both the brains and the looks of the pod, returns triumphantly from a trip to Portugal. Hear all about Ferg's adventures involving copious amounts of Port and seafood. Lee, who has been manning the fort, is overjoyed. In this week's thrilling episode we go in depth on the new exciting releases from Balfour and learn a little more about Ferg's approach to making top notch, boundary pushing English still wine. We also discuss the runners and riders at the recent Wine Garden of England event which took place at Balfour. How many of these producers do you know? We highlight great achievements by friend of the pod Jessica Summer and hopefully a friend of the pod Sam Povey, who have both been named in Harper's '30 Under 30'. Congratulations also to FOTP Libby Brodie for her placing in The Drinks List Top 100 Most Influential People In Drinks. Ferg and Lee discuss the recent MW exams and send their hearty congratulations to all those who have endured, battled, and worked their way through one of the world's most challenging qualifications. Lee talks about his time judging at this year's IEWA and we cover off the big winners including Busi Jacobsohn, Oastbrook, and Biddenden. As if that wasn't enough for you, there's the usual nonsense including chesschat, cattalk, and a theatre recommendation. TM&TM: More Than A Podcast, available to castdown wherever you loadpod from Thursday morning.

Good morning and welcome to Montrose Fresh, from The Montrose Daily Press. It's Wednesday June 16th and we're here to bring you a closer look at our top stories, events and more that matter to us here in Western Colorado. Today - Benezet Realty Partners and VCM Global Asset Management have purchased the Russell Stover manufacturing facility. And they already have big plans. Today's episode is brought to you by Elevate Internet. Whether it's for your home or your business they offer the best speeds at the best price. Right now, if you refer a friend you can get $25 off! Give them a call for more information at 844-386-8744 or visit them at elevateinternet.com. - Now, our feature story. Last August, Mitchell Bennett, CEO of Benezet Realty Partners was in Montrose, working with local producers on the Western Slope through a USDA grant. Benezet Realty Partners is a real estate investment company focused on food logistics, storage and production solutions. Bennett was already a fan of the area and its proximity to other regional towns, as well as the growing community. And coincidentally, while in Montrose, the Russell Stover manufacturing facility was up for sale. The company hadn't come close to completing an acquisition of that size before. But as Bennett continued to work with local producers, conversations resonated with him. So Bennett took the opportunity to walk through the plant. It didn't take him long to see the facility's year-round and long-term potential. His decision became clear. But with a purchase of that size, he needed capital. Bennett reached out locally first. Then he reached out to long-time friend Tom Vukota, founder and CEO of VCM Global Asset Management. The chance to purchase one of the largest facilities between Salt Lake City and Denver was exciting for the two. The sale was finalized and announced last week. And VCM and Benezet already plan to upgrade the facility. The facility — now dubbed the Western Slope Food and Innovation Center — expects to play an immense role in Colorado's broader food production value chain. The plant is expected to contribute to food waste reduction while adding potentially hundreds of jobs. Bennet noted that, because the region is in severe drought, preservation is all the more important. The pandemic, too, has caused disruption to producers and distributors, so the facility has the potential to provide immediate value. That potential boost has already been acknowledged. Benezet has received immediate interest from companies to move into the property, so much so that they've already compiled a lengthy list. And with so much interest, Benezet is trying to figure out how to bring in multiple tenants into the property. To learn more about this story visit us at Montrosepress.com - Next, Montrose got funky on Saturday while celebrating its first FUNC Fest since 2019 at Riverbottom Park. The festival saw around 5,000 people come and go throughout the day. With more than 40 vendors, food trucks included, the festival more than doubled its usual vendor count. The Grand Jun Beverage Company, San Juan Mobile Brews, Bravo food truck, Polar Express Ice Cream Truck, Truckin' Delicious, HOBO's Food Truck, Taste of New Orleans Snowballs, CMC Bakery and Corndawg's Hotdawg Cart were all set up in the food truck court next to the music section of the festival. And the Montrose Recreation District sponsored the kid's zone near the entrance of the park. The Black Canyon Rotary Club provided their annual Beer and Wine Garden. They even had to call in for more kegs of beer. And Sports Rewind and Montrose Surf and Cycle both provided rentals for the river throughout the day, from paddle boards, kick boards and anything people could use on the water. - That's all for today, thank you for listening! This week my guest is Ruth Simpson from Simpsons Wine Estate, in the village of Barham in Kent. Ruth and her husband Charles have been making wine at their property in the South of France for almost two decades but in 2014 decided to bring their expertise back to the UK, establishing Simpsons, right in the heart of what is now known as the Wine Garden of England. Ruth's background is working in the charitable and humanitarian sector and she is a fifth-generation member of the Grant family, who are responsible for the Glenfiddich, Balvenie and Hendricks Gin brands so, some would say she has alcohol running through her blood! We talk about what it's like working with your respective other, innovation in wine making and how Simpson's famous helter skelter came about! Jamie & Matt venture downtown to the HockeyTown Cafe and the MusicTown recording studios on the second floor. They are joined with Tony Batou of the Wine Garden in St. Clair Shores and Patrick Moore from the Michigan Bourbon Club. Tony & Patrick have just returned from a trip to Kentucky to pick four barrels. They break down the process of each pick. Talking about traveling the Kentucky Bourbon Trail we have Mike Dwyer (a man of words). Pat Akerley brought his guitar and wrote a new theme song for us. He also plays a track he wrote with his band in the 90's Beer On the Penguin. Here are the distilleries we heard about from Tony & Patrick's adventure: http://www.buffalotracedistillery.com/brands/wl-weller https://www.makersmark.com/ http://www.1792bourbon.com/our-bourbon Here is a link to the MBC https://www.facebook.com/groups/michiganbourbonclub/ This is Tony's shop http://www.thewinegardenscs.com/ https://www.facebook.com/TheWineGardenSCS/ www.ManCaveHappyHour.com
