This episode is quite literally the top of my mountain, my crown jewel moment, the summary of every podcast and every Comic Con I have attended. At the Great Lakes Comic-Con, I got to spend the entire weekend with Sam J. Jones himself, better known as Flash Gordon, Quarterback, NY Jets and Savior of the Universe. Growing up, Flash Gordon was on the same level as Star Wars to me, and I was not only star struck, but in awe of what an amazing person Sam Jones is. They always say, "Don't meet your heroes.", but in this case, I am so happy I was able to. I spent the entire weekend talking with Sam, but got to record our conversation for about 20 minutes where we talked about Hollywood, Flash Gordon, his appearance in Ted, his family, and life in general. This was bittersweet however, as the founder of Great Lakes Comic-Con, Mike DeSantis, tragically passed away a couple days before the event. I didn't get to thank him for this opportunity, but I am sure I will one day. RIP Mike. A million thank yous to my producer and co-host Randy Walker who spent hours cutting up 2hrs and 45 minutes of raw footage (because I didn't know how to work the Zoom mic).
It was a pleasure chatting with Randy Walker Director of Wayne County Veterans Services. Please check out the show and share with a Wayne County Mi veteran. Enjoy!

In this episode, we were joined by Tom Lawrence of Lawrence Systems and CNWR IT Consultants. He was on the show over a year ago, and his YouTube channel has just kept growing since then. In fact, it's become so successful that he's merging his business with CNWR so he can continue to focus on the YouTube channel while CNWR manage the business projects. Recently, Meta launched Threads and Tom shared his take on the various social networks and how he uses each one. Finally, Tom talked about how he uses AI like ChatGPT to help him manage his business. Bob and Randy played around with ChatGPT and Bob got it to generate this poem: In Detroit's vibrant heart, a celebration did ignite, Randy Walker's 40th birthday, shining ever so bright. Amidst the city's rhythm, where dreams intertwine, Tocororo awaited, a venue so divine. The night air was filled with excitement and cheer, As friends and loved ones gathered, drawing near. Randy, a soul adored, a beacon of light, Guiding others with kindness, a true delight. At Tocororo's threshold, the ambiance embraced, A tapestry of laughter and joy interlaced. The melodies of Motown danced through the air, Celebrating a milestone, a life lived with flair. The walls adorned with memories of days gone by, Each photograph a testament, reaching for the sky. From humble beginnings, Randy had soared, Touching countless lives with the love he poured. In the dimly lit room, candles flickered with grace, Illuminating the journey etched on his face. Friends raised their glasses, toasts filled with cheer, Honoring Randy's presence, a treasure so dear. The aroma of delectable cuisine wafted in the breeze, Tickling taste buds with flavors that pleased. From soulful barbecue to savory delights, Every bite a testament to culinary heights. The laughter echoed, resounding like a symphony, As stories of shared adventures unfolded with glee. From youthful escapades to wisdom's embrace, Randy's path had intertwined with every trace. A live band struck up a vibrant tune, Swaying bodies beneath the luminescent moon. Feet tapped to the rhythm, hearts beating in time, Celebrating Randy, a friend so sublime. As the night waned on, memories etched in hearts, Randy's spirit shone bright, never to depart. With gratitude and love, the celebration drew near, For forty years of existence, cherished and clear. And so, in Tocororo's embrace, Detroit's soul did sing, A testament to friendship and the joy it brings. Randy Walker's 40th birthday, a moment held tight, In the tapestry of time, forever alight. Randy had ChatGPT generate a biography of Bob, and this is what it came up with. It's not very accurate. Tempo offense has been in the mainstream of football thinking for about a quarter of a century now when guys like Randy Walker and Rich Rodriguez made it popular, but it still is, in many ways an underutilized and under-coached aspect of an offensive attack. Today's "best of" episode shares the ideas of 11 coaches on maximizing the advantages of tempo by how it is structured, the plays run with it, how it's game planned, the mechanics of playing fast and how it even can become engrained in culture. -Hawaii offensive coordinator Ian Shoemaker - tempo as a stressor to the defense -Kansas Offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki - Using tempo to create multiplicity, game planning tempo, paying attention to what plays work most efficiently with a fast pace -New Wisconsin Offensive Coordinator Phil Longo points out that you can move as fast as the officials, so understanding what their pace is can allow you to build your procedures and call plays that can be executed within that 12 or so seconds that it takes for the ball to be put into play. -Texas passing game coordinator and receivers coach Brennan Marion views tempo as a part of their attack which wears a defense down and forces them to play a fifth quarter in terms of the amount of reps. -USFL New Orleans Breakers OC Noel Mazzone was at the forefront of tempo and continues to utilize it but he points out how he teaches it and the types of plays he likes -Incarnate Word University assistant Keith Barefield ran the statistically fastest offense in football while he was the offensive coordinator at Quincy and it helped them turn an offense around and break records. In this segment, he explains how tempo should be coached as well as the mechanics of running the fastest offense. -Tennessee OL Glen Elarbee was part of one of the most explosive offenses in the country in 2022. #1 in Total Offense 538.1 #1 in scoring 47.3. He explains why he loves tempo for the offensive line and provides the details on coaching the mechanics of tempo with the offensive line in this segment from Lauren's First and Goal. -Arkansas OL Coach Cody Kennedy believes that training for tempo has to start in the meeting room and be carried over to walk through in getting linemen to think and make their calls. -McMurry University Head Coach Jordan Neal joined us when he was the coordinator of the #1 offense in D3 in 2016 averaging over 600 yards per game. He explains his 10-10-100 and perfect play drills which teach his players to line up and play fast as well as get into shape to play at a fast pace. -Tempo is not reserved for no huddle only. Army TE Coach Matt Drinkall joined us on the podcast in 2017 when he was the head coach at Kansas Wesleyan which had one of the most potent offenses in NAIA. He discusses how tempo can be utilized from a huddle to stress a defense. -We finish up with the Head Coach of Klein Cane HS in Texas James Clancy. He started the program at this new high school in 2017 and immediately made being uptempo a part of their culture. It's something they live in everything they do. He also explains how they coach tempo in practice. This has allowed them to have success on the field. Episode links and clinics at coachandcoordinator.com
The Grass Court Cutting King Maurice Gardner gives us the secrets to what makes great courts… and that's grass courts. Former Head Groundskeeper at Wessen Lawn Tennis Club in Pontiac, Michigan, Gardner takes us through a day in the life of a groundskeeper as well as the cost of the maintaining such a high standard of grass courts. The cost of keeping grass courts appears to be often too high, and in the case it may have been too high for Wessen which went out of business after boasting itself to be the first grass court club built in the USA in over a century. Country Clubs Have The Equipment Gardner, who studied agronomy after working at Wessen, mentions that country clubs already have much of the equipment required for keeping the grass courts. “All you really need beside what the course superintendent has is a painter for the lines,” says Gardner. Is The Allure Of Grass Still There? Randy Walker hosts this week's podcast here at BeyondTheBaselines.com and wonders if people will still want to play on grass, as grass courts are so elusive. “People travel to Newport” just to play on grass, says Walker. “Grass courts can add value to any club.” And he muses, throughout the podcast, if grass court play will grow once again in the United States. It's a dream that, one never knows, might become a reality.
Today's fun Friday has Randy Walker in for Devon who will be back next week. - Nordin Aquavit's Pink strawberry is out, and we have a sip. Each year is different, and this has a great flavor. We also talk a bit about what Aquavit is in case you don't know. - Randy went to Wyandotte's Iron Gate for a Tiki cocktail experience - Everyone's talking about the ZaBot Pizza Robot, but few are saying what it's like. We went with our own money and give it a spin with feedback - There's progress on Target coming to Midtown Detroit at Mack and Woodward. It's still a bit away, with construction starting in December as part of a larger development. It'll be a smaller format store, so getting the product mix right will be key. Good morning, it's Monday June 28th and this is The Herald Review's Daily Chirp podcast. We're bringing you a closer look at one of our top stories, along with other important things going on in our community. Today - Dozens upon dozens of people from around the country flocked to a private ranch on the border late Friday afternoon to rally for immigration reform in the United States. But first, a quick message from our sponsor [insert sponsor audio] - Before we begin, some local history. Did you know that Canelo has several buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places? One of them is The Canelo School which was opened in 1912 and is one of the few remaining one-room adobe schoolhouses in the state. Originally serving 20 students, their first teacher, Miss Fern Bartlett, would ride her horse eight miles each way to instruct the pupils. 36 years later, the school closed when just one student arrived. Since then, the school has served as a community center, a country store, a church and a funeral home. This and other historic Canelo sites are just a short drive away. NEW -- Today's history is brought to you by Benson Hospital - they're doing more than treating illnesses in Benson, they're building a healthier community. Benson Hospital is now collaborating with the Diaper Bank of Southern Arizona to provide diaper assistance to families in need. For more information visit their website at bensonhospital.org. Also, The Daily Chirp podcast is giving away 5 Amazon Echo Dots - one every month now through July. You can enter for your chance to win twice a day! Today's code is FIREFLYS and find the other codeword in our “Daily Chirp Podcast Alert” e-newsletter. To enter the sweepstakes go to myheraldreview.com, again today's codeword is: FIREFLYS - Now, our feature story. Dozens upon dozens of people from around the country flocked to a private ranch on the border late Friday afternoon to rally for immigration reform in the United States. Rancher John Ladd had invited members of an organization called the Federation for American Immigration Reform to his massive property off State Route 92 between Bisbee and Palominas for the three-hour event. F.A.I.R officials claim they're a non-partisan entity. According to the organization's website, their objective seeks to reduce overall immigration to a more normal level. It also says that reducing legal immigration levels from well over one million at present to a very generous 300,000 a year over a sustained period will allow America to manage growth, address environmental concerns, and maintain a high quality of life. About 10 miles of the Ladd ranch is right along the U.S.-Mexican border and the rancher is no stranger to undocumented migrants traipsing through his land daily. Ladd has also found several dead undocumented persons on his ranch over the years, people left behind by their human smugglers. But the running theme throughout the rally was not one of anti-immigration, but one about entering this country legally and becoming a lawful and productive member of society. While the event was titled “End the Biden Border Crisis Rally,” it centered more around the suffering of the parents, relatives and friends of people who have died at the hands of undocumented migrants inside the U.S. Many of those families, referred to as Angel Families, were at the rally Friday afternoon. Banners with photos of the deceased were spread out on the rocky ground in front of a raised stage where several speakers. Speakers included Tom Homan, a former director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement under the Trump administration, and Cochise County Sheriff Mark Dannels. There were about 30 sheriffs from around Arizona and other parts of the country at the rally. In fact, the event was schedu led for Friday because it coincided with the end of the National Sheriffs Convention in Phoenix. That meant many of the law enforcement officers who attended the convention then headed to the Ladd ranch for the rally. Also in attendance were also four members of a group called Advocates for Victims of Illegal Alien Crime. All of them were visiting from other states and each had lost either a child, a friend or another relative to a violent death caused by an undocumented migrant. - Thanks for listening, before we continue, a quick message from our sponsors, Prestige Family Living. Walker, who has 36 years in education and has worked for two school districts, came to Douglas from Illinois. Three years after arriving here he was named DUSD's athletic director and since has been an assistant principal at Douglas High School and principal at DHS and at Paul Huber Middle School each for two years before returning to Douglas High School two years ago. Upon his initial visit to Douglas High School he saw possibilities and hope for what the training room could be like. He knew then this would be his new home. Walker feels he is leaving the athletic program and the high school in good hands but won't deny these past two years have been a challenge dealing with COVID and the gun incident at DHS two years ago that led to the clear backpack policy. Walker admits he's going to miss the students and the teachers but adds he and his family are not going anywhere and they will still be around. The last week of school some of the staff at DHS threw Walker a surprise luncheon and presented him with some very nice gifts. But now,Walker says he is looking forward to following his son, who is 4, as he begins participating in youth sports. Get ready for this weekend, there's a lot going on. Like the Tombstone 4th of July Parade, Car Show & Pin Up Contest. The parade will be in Tombstone over the 4th of July!! It'll start at 11:00. And there is NO ENTRY FEE FOR PARTICIPATING IN THE PARADE!!! They're also putting out a special invite for the children to decorate their bikes and compete for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places!! Kids 15 and under are eligible. ALSO....they'll have a couple of car clubs coming to show off their own cars!!! If you'd like to enter contact Marge at 702-290-5290. Finally - we'd like to remember the life of Loretta Rose Bowman. Lorie was born in Plattsburg, New York. She served 3 years in the U.S. Air Force where she met the love of her life and soulmate, Clarence. She always supported Clarence while he continued to serve 22 years in the Army, traveling the U.S. and overseas with five children, while she sustained her career in the U.S. Government Civil Service in Finance and Accounting for more than 30 years. Lorie loved the outdoors, camping and fishing while her children were young. She was an avid crocheter and enjoyed doing crafts with her daughter. She loved watching her children and grandchildren participate in sports and competitions and was ALWAYS their number 1 fan. Even at 85 she still would cheer her loudest. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who will be tremendously missed. She is survived by her best friend and husband, Clarence, her sons and daughter, and her 6 grandchildren. Thank you for taking a moment with us today to remember and celebrate Lorie's life. Ross Richmond: Figurative Elements and Symbolic Objects In sculpting realistic figures of humans and horses adorned with color and pattern, Ross Richmond demonstrates how an artist can push his medium beyond its normal boundaries. The artist creates beautiful and expressionistic sculpture using gesture to convey narrative. Communication has always been the main source of Richmond’s inspiration, whether it be with oneself or between others. Richmond discovered glass in 1991 during his time at the Cleveland Institute of Art, where he received a BFA in glass, with a minor in metals. He is considered one of the top glass sculptors in the field today and has worked with (and for) some of the greatest glass and non-glass artists including William Morris, Jane Rosen, Preston Singletary, KeKe Cribbs, and Dale Chihuly. Richmond studied and taught at The Studio of the Corning Museum of Glass (CMoG), Penland School of Craft and the Pilchuck Glass School. The artist was awarded residencies at the Tacoma Museum of Glass, Toledo Glass Museum and CMoG. His work is represented by a number of galleries across the country. Working as an apprentice in 1997, Richmond became a member of Morris’ glassblowing team in 1999 and worked alongside him until his retirement in 2007. Morris encouraged teamwork and working outside the box – lessons reflected in both the surface and shape of Richmond’s exquisite horse figures. All of Richmond’s work is blown and hot sculpted, meaning that nothing is casted or mold blown – all pieces are made by hand while hot on the pipe in the glass shop. First, the main shape of the piece is established then allowed to cool. Working it in a colder state affords the artist a more “solid core” to work from. If the piece is too hot, the shape will distort as the details are brought out. A small oxygen-propane torch is used for all of the detail work, which allows for a greater variety of flame shapes and sizes to work with. Heads are typically blown, whereas all hands are solid. With a blown shape, Richmond is able to inflate areas or suck areas in as needed. Hands are made solid so that delicate fingers do not collapse or distort. All colors are applied in layers of glass powders, and the finished piece is coated with an acid to remove the shine for a matte finish. The inspiration for Richmond’s figures made between 2015 and 2018, was derived from ancient Egyptian sculpture, Japanese prints and Art Nouveau graphics, which all use or are inspired by natural scenes and landscapes. All of these different time periods and genres produced works that were highly ornate, yet simplistic in form and composition. Richmond used color and pattern to decorate and adorn the robes his figures are wearing to create imagery and convey a setting or scenery, to place the figure in a natural environment. Imagery of blossoming flowers or trees convey growth or growing to create the feeling of springtime bliss, awakening after the winter slumber. Carved imagery or applied components provide a bas relief and texture to an otherwise flat and smooth surface. Richmond says: “The figure has always been a major theme in my work, and in this series, I am breaking down the human form into a basic shape as if it were draped in fabric. This keeps the eye from focusing on the details of anatomy, and lets the viewer follow the sweeping gestural lines of the form. The basic shape of the body along with its quiet contemplative facial features, gives these figures a calm meditative feel.” In 2016, Richmond and Randy Walker were awarded a collaborative residency at CMoG. Having worked together on the Morris glassblowing team, the two artists utilized well-learned teamwork combined with strengths in form, color, and the ability to push the bounds of the material. Walker created objects that seemed to grow out of and be part of the natural world, while Richmond sculpted realistic figures adorned with color and pattern. Marrying their aesthetic, objects were transformed from natural objects into figurative works. Over the last few years, Richmond has been slowly building his own hot glass studio in Seattle. From March 4 through 27, Traver Gallery presents a unique exhibition of works by Jane Rosen and Richmond. Though their influence is always visible in one another’s artwork, this is the first time they have shown side by side. This exhibition celebrates and highlights the critical impact of artist friendships and highlights the vital influence each has on the other.

This week on Inside the Headset we are featuring Northwestern University Head Coach Pat Fitzgerald’s general session from the 2016 AFCA Convention. Coach Fitzgerald highlights his coaching journey, discusses the significance of developing a culture with key cornerstones, and shares insight on the responsibility coaches possess to impact players. Pat Fitzgerald is currently in his 15th season at the helm of the Northwestern football program, making him the second-longest tenured Big Ten head coach. Fitzgerald began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Maryland (1998) after he graduated from Northwestern, where he was a two-time All-American linebacker and winner of the Nagurski Trophy and Bednarik Award (1995 & 1996). After spending the 1999 season at Colorado as a graduate assistant, Coach Fitzgerald joined Idaho’s staff as a linebackers coach. In 2001, he returned to Northwestern, where he initially worked with the defensive backs, but later switched over to linebackers in 2002. Following the sudden passing of Randy Walker on June 29, 2006, Coach Fitzgerald was named Head Coach of Northwestern. He has led the Wildcats to nine bowl appearances, and four of the program’s five bowl victories have come under his guidance. Digital transformation journeys for financial institutions — regardless of size — present many challenges. Banks have traditionally been more of a follower, rather than a leader, in adopting emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, machine learning, and edge computing. If you’re looking for a bar that mixes Detroit iconography with midcentury modern (along with a dash of west coast garnish) you’ve found it in Hammer & Nail. Located in the old Carpenter’s Union building on Woodward across from the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Hammer & Nail’s drink menu runs the gamut from the crafty to the accessible, venerable, inexpensive beer. So the other day we (Randy Walker, Sven Gustafson and Devon O'Reilly) talked to the General Manager, Rick Paulger, about what the history of the place is, what their thoughts were bringing this concept to Detroit, and how they’re doing so far. Also, the fact that they use real cherries in their drinks. Most cherries you get at bars are actually manufactured and not technically food. We also tasted a few drinks, courtesy of Hammer & Nail, to get a feel for the menu. We rarely approach a new place with the idea of it is “good” or “bad” (unless they truly deserve it), but more along the lines of “if you like X, you’ll like Y.” If you like what you’ve heard, we do this every weekday on Daily Detroit. In a world of technological excess and social turmoil, one longs to return to the simple goodness of the earth and its bounty. Like a trip to the local farmer’s market, Jen Violette’s cornucopia of glass fruits and vegetables renews in the viewer a connection with the ground we walk upon and the faith that we remain part of a plan that makes life on earth sustainable. A full-time glass and mixed media artist based in Wilmington, Vermont, Violette is known for her colorful, garden inspired glass sculptures that often incorporate metal and wood. Recreating plant structures with molten glass, the artist has mastered the use of glass powders to mimic the colors and textures found in nature. “Since the growing season is relatively short in Vermont, I enjoy gardening with molten glass to extend my growing season.” A 27-year hot glass veteran, Violette received her BFA in Glass and Metal Sculpture from Alfred University School of Art & Design, Alfred, New York in 1994. She continued her glass art education through courses at The Studio of The Corning Museum of Glass (CMOG), Corning, New York; the Pilchuck Glass School, Stanwood, Washington; the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, Rhode Island; the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Deer Isle, Maine; and Penland School of Crafts, Bakersville, North Carolina. Her mentors and inspirations include hot glass royalty such as Lino Tagliapietra, William Morris, Martin Janecky, Dante Marioni, Richard Marquis, the late Pino Signoretto, Randy Walker, Karen Willenbrink-Johnsen, Jasen Johnsen, Stephen Dee Edwards, Fred Tschida, Walter Lieberman, and Brian Pike. Violette’s work can be found in private collections worldwide and is represented by a number of fine art glass galleries including Schantz Galleries Contemporary Art in Stockbridge, Massachusetts; Vetri Gallery in Seattle, Washington; Raven Gallery in Aspen, Colorado; Sandra Ainsley Gallery in Toronto, Canada; and Montague Gallery in San Francisco, California. Her work can also be found at Duncan McClellan Gallery in St. Petersburg, Florida, where from October 12–14, 2018, the artist will be featured along with glass artist Claire Kelly in a weekend event including glass demos by both artists. Currently fabricating larger scale installations and glass sculpturesdirectly mounted to the wall, Violette’s aesthetic now includes forest floor imagery with fall leaves and branches. She moves in and out of the seasons, simultaneously creating a spring inspired installation containing fiddlehead ferns and glass trilliums, as well as an homage to summer with black-eyed Susans and sunflowers, and a wall piece featuring large-scale ferns installed at different angles. Upon her return from the Glass Art Society conference in Murano, Italy, in May2018, Violette will participate in a Vermont Crafts Council Studio Tour held during Memorial Day weekend. During August 6–11 the artist will teach her first class ever, a Creative Glass Sculpting Techniques workshop, at the CMOG Studio.

Here’s a link to the survey: https://duckfeed.typeform.com/to/LDPTnY Table of Contents Bonfireside Chat is Ending How is Bonfireside Chat going to end? What’s Replacing Bonfireside Chat? Watch Out for Fireballs! is Going Weekly WOFF! Will Change Schedules in August What’s Happening to the Crystal Chronicles? What’s Happening to Other Shows on the Network? How is the Patreon Changing? Early Release is getting better. We’re changing the Slack access tier. What are some open questions? We’re holding a survey. Timeline of Changes Not all of this is happening immediately. Here’s a brief timeline so you can know what takes effect when. January: WOFF! expands beyond retro games. May: Brayton replaces Gary on Check It Out, Comrade! Late June: Changes to the Duckfeed Patreon will take effect. July 1: Early Release shifts to 1 week early instead of 1 day early. July 9: Bonfireside Chat Victory Lap season begins. August 1: Watch Out for Fireballs! schedule change takes effect. August 20: Final Bonfireside Chat airs. Bonfireside Chat is Ending It’s strange to begin an announcement about Watch Out for Fireballs! with news for a different show, but the fate of Bonfireside Chat affects everything on the network. We’ve thought about it long and hard, and we’ve decided to end Bonfireside Chat in August of 2017. Bonfireside Chat and the Dark Souls series have both been very good to us. We’ve met a ton of great people doing the show, built an audience, and made some great episodes. But the Dark Souls 3 season kind of broke us. It was the first time we had to spend so much time playing, examining, and talking about a game that we’re not crazy for. We knew the end of Bonfireside Chat would happen some day. As early as a year ago, FromSoft told us that the series was concluding. We entertained the notion of continuing the show by talking about SoulsLikes, but those are of wildly varying quality. And all of our thoughts come back to this: Dark Souls was a game that was so good that we couldn’t *not** do a show about it.* Most of the sequels were as well. But it makes no sense to bind ourself to things that merely imitate something that we love. What if From releases a new SoulsBorne game? E3 is in a few weeks, and it’s totally possible that From will announce something related to Souls. This won’t change our decision. Instead, that game will be covered on Watch Out for Fireballs! The same applies to any really good SoulsLikes. How is Bonfireside Chat going to end? We have a plan for ending Bonfireside Chat, and we’ve alluded to it before. This summer, we’re walking back through the whole series in the opposite order that we’ve covered it. Each game will get an episode + appendix pair, and we’re going to talk about each entry in the broader context of the series now that we know how it ends. So that means the order is as follows: * Bloodborne (July 2) * Dark Souls 2 (July 16) * Demon’s Souls (July 30) * Dark Souls (August 13) These episodes will have guests, and they’re already chosen from our Bonfireside Chat After Dark tier backers. They are John Hurst, Mitch Benes, Randy Walker, and Kilo Pascal. Prior to that, we’re going to cover the remaining soulslikes we’ve committed to covering. Namely, Let It Die, Nioh, and Hollow Knight. You’ll notice that this brings the entire podcast around full circle. We like how appropriate that feels. What Happened to Bonfireside Chat After Dark? We miscalculated when we added Bonfireside Chat After Dark to the Patreon. We had no idea what would happen with the series or the show when we thought that up. We’ll own that mistake, and we also want to make it right… and here’s how. Those backers who would have been guests on Bonfireside Chat After Dark will instead guest on those final revisit episodes. It feels right to get people from the community involved in the victory lap, especially if they are people who have supported us as much as those individuals have. We’ve spoken with them, and they’re cool with it. If you paid for a prompt or question on Bonfireside Chat After Dark, we will use your responses during those recap appendices. Please look for a message in your email inbox toward the beginning of June. What’s Replacing Bonfireside Chat? We’ve gotten a lot of suggestions about what to cover after Bonfireside Chat ends. People were pulling hard for games like the Witcher and Nier. We seriously kicked around the idea of starting up a show that chronologically examined the Resident Evil games. The Crystal Chronicles was on our Patreon milestone goals for a very long time (more on that later). Starting up a new show about a new series of games makes less sense than making big changes to Watch Out for Fireballs!, which has always been our flagship show. What happens if we broaden that umbrella, and make changes to the schedule to allow us to cover more games in greater depth? What’s it look like if the Witcher 3 becomes a game we could cover on WOFF!? You end up with something we’ve codenamed WOFF! 2.0. But we likely won’t use that name in the future. Watch Out for Fireballs! is Going Weekly WOFF becoming more frequent is a huge deal for us. And here’s what it looks like. The first 3 weeks of each month (or the first 4, if it’s a 5 week month) will feature full episodes about short or medium length games, or episodes about portions of larger games (like we’ve done with large games in the past). The last episode of each month will be a collective listener response episode about all of the games we covered that month. This kind of grouping will also let us do themed batches of episodes each month. Hypothetically, this is what “Weird NES Sequels” month would look like. Week 1: Super Mario Bros. 2 Week 2: Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest Week 3: Zelda II: The Adventures of Link Week 4: Feedback episode about all three of the previous games. Other ideas for themed groups of episodes would be a long look at the Wolfenstein series, going from Wolfenstein 3D to the 2008 reboot to Wolfenstein: The New Order. We could also do a Resident Evil cleanup month, with Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, Code: Veronica, and Resident Evil 6. We aren’t promising that either of those will happen right away, but they’re examples. If this sounds familiar, it’s similar to how we’ve treated JRPGs and CRPGs in the past. The Neverwinter Nights II series of episodes was a test model for this, and we think those episodes turned out very well. Looking at the math, our old “tick tock” model of release would usually result in 26 episodes per year. Our multi-part episodes have made us come out with slightly more than that (for example, we released 30 episodes in 2016). Under the new model, you would get 40 mainline episodes per year. Here are a few things that will happen as a result of this: * We will cover more “small” games. The Pac Man 2 episode in the Duck Bundle was a test for how this would work. * Split episodes will go away (namely, single episodes that feature two games, like the Starflight/Toe Jam & Earl episode, or the Brawler special). * We’ll be a little more liberal about splitting meaty games into multiple parts (example: Metal Gear Solid 2 is on our docket, and we’re splitting that 12 hour game in 2 because we will have a lot to say). * We’ll have to be more comfortable with some episodes being “only” 60-90 minutes, as we cover some shorter stuff. Two things that won’t go away are poll episodes and executive produced episodes. Those will be folded into the model, and remain unchanged. That means one of those will happen each quarter (or four times per year). Another consequence is that listener response episodes will be much meatier since they’ll cover 3 or 4 games, and there will be a more consistent deadline… namely, responses about all of the games should come in by the 15th of each month. WOFF! Will Change Schedules in August The changes to the WOFF! schedule will begin August 3, with Final Fantasy IV month. That’s right, we’ll be covering all of Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy IV: The After Years. For reference, here’s the schedule up through that point: Crimson Shroud (May 11) Pilotwings (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pilotwings) (May 25) Yakuza (June 1) SSX Tricky (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSX_Tricky) (June 15) NOX(June 29) Metal Gear Solid 2, Part 1 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal_Gear_Solid_2:_Sons_of_Liberty) (July 13) Metal Gear Solid 2, Part 2 (July 20) Final Fantasy IV, Part 1 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_IV) (August 3) Final Fantasy IV, Part 2 (August 10) The After Years, Part 1 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_IV:_The_After_Years) (August 17) The After Years, Part 2 (August 24) Final Fantasy IV Responses (August 31) What’s Happening to the Crystal Chronicles? You may wonder what us covering FF4 on WOFF! means for the Final Fantasy show we had planned. It means that show won’t happen. We pegged that show at a very high milestone amount because it would take a tremendous amount of work. But as Bonfireside Chat wound down, we realized we probably wouldn’t hit that total any time soon. And redesigning WOFF! presented an opportunity to cover the Final Fantasy games that were meaningful to us without taking on an unreasonable workload that would harm the rest of the shows. In general, we want to be very circumspect about adding new shows, so we’re going to make some changes to the Patreon campaign to reflect that. Expect more details later. Of note: Heartbeat City will not go away. Gary will record and release a pilot for that soon. What’s Happening to Other Shows on the Network? This change shouldn’t have a huge impact on other shows, but there are some things we’d like to announce/clarify so people know what’s up. Gary is taking a leave of absence from Check It Out, Comrade!, the network’s indie game show. Brayton Cameron from Teenage Dirtbags will be replacing him. Gary made this decision to free up more time for working on his book, and playing things for the new iteration of WOFF! We’re really excited to have Brayton take over his seat. Brayton is hilarious, and has different taste in games than Gary does, so you will see them cover different stuff. Gary will still come back for specific games (think Thimbleweed Park or Torment: Tides of Numenera). File Under Water has an end date. Right now, it’s slated to end in late October. A show about R.E.M. was always going to be limited, because they only put out a limited number of albums. We currently have no plans to cover another band. Radio Free Mid-World is a limited show as well. Once we run out of Dark Tower books, related works by King, and related media (the movies, TV show, whatever else comes) we will end that show. Don’t worry, this won’t happen until 2019 at the earliest. How is the Patreon Changing? We’re making some adjustments to the way our Patreon works, in order to reflect these changes to our show lineup. Chiefly (and logically), we’re getting rid of the $75 BSC Afterdark tier, and removing the “get a prompt on BSC Afterdark” from the $10 tier. We are also removing The Crystal Chronicles as a milestone goal. Both of these will be replaced by something else in due time… Look a little further down to see what we’re thinking of (and to see how you can help). We’re also making two other big changes. Early Release is getting better. Effective around the end of June and the beginning of July, episodes on the Early Release feed will come out a week early, instead of a day early. We are also raising the price of this perk to $5 per month. This is more valuable, we think, and it brings us closer in line with other Patreon campaigns that offer a similar perk. We’re going to make a great deal of these changes in the middle of June, and the “1 Week Early” change will happen for any episode that would have normally come out in July. The only show this doesn’t apply to right now is The Level, which will come out 1-2 days early because of how that show is produced. We’re changing the Slack access tier. Effective sometime in June, Slack invites will only go to backers at $5 and up. If you already have access to the Slack team, or access the Slack team before the change is made, then you will be grandfathered in. We will not revoke Slack access from people. We’re doing this for a couple of reasons. The community is getting very big, and it’s requiring more work and more touch than it did in the past. This will help control that. Additionally, it will reduce the number of drive-bys that happen, as $5 is a bigger investment. Something to note is that the $1 tier will not go away. Those small donation amounts are huge for us. You will still get access to incidental content, and access to Watch Out for Fireballs! polls. What are some open questions? Everything laid out before this paragraph is a decision we’ve already made. We feel like they are good decisions, and we wouldn’t shake things up so much if we didn’t feel so secure in how things are going. But each big decision is accompanied by multiple smaller decisions. And that’s why we’re running this survey… to gather useful information from you, and to hear your thoughts and ideas about how the network can get better at giving you things you want. Here are some questions that have gone unanswered, and we want your help. What’s a good replacement for the $75 tier? That’s a lot of money to give, and we want to make it awesome. Would you want to guest on an episode? Dictate a piece of media for a Try This type show? Dictate the subject of some video content like Let’s Plays? What kind of new milestones goals would you like to see? Should we do another live show each year? Should we hold a virtual DuckCon? Include more guest episodes on WOFF!? Do one-off milestones interest you? Not every milestone needs to be an ongoing commitment. Maybe we could do some actual-play tabletop one-offs. Maybe we could set a goal for Gary and Kole to stream some co-op games. And there are other questions we haven’t even thought to ask. We want to know what would make you a patron if you aren’t one already. We want to know what stuff we do that you care about, and we also want to know what you don’t care about. We’d also like to hear how you feel about the changes to our biggest shows. We’ve already made our decision about ending Bonfireside Chat, but it’s worth understanding how this will impact your listenership and patronage. Something we don’t want to hear is “Stick to Games” or “Stop mentioning politics.” We also don’t want to hear “Be more positive.” Save yourself the time and hassle if that’s what you were going to say. We’re holding a survey. After this novella of a post, we want to know what you think. Use the button below to fill out the survey. It will be a huge help to us. Completing the survey and selecting “Yes, I would like to enter the contest” will enter you for a chance to win a $20 Steam gift card (we are giving out three of them). We are especially interested in your responses if you’re not already a Patron of Duckfeed.tv on Patreon. A link to the survey: https://duckfeed.typeform.com/to/LDPTnY Thank you so much for reading this, if you’ve gotten this far. Your support has meant the world to us, and we are incredibly excited about what these changes mean for the network. Thanks for being along for the ride.

Episode 144 was our final episode from our current studio, and we couldn't have asked for a better episode to wrap things up. We were joined by Ming Chen from AMC's Comic Book Men, Jimmy McKnight from the Ninja Starship Podcast, and Randy Walker from our networking group and twitter stream. And yep, it's true...we're moving...again. After just a year, we're moving our studio to a new, dedicated building where we'll add more studios, more capacity, and just keep making things suck less bit by bit as we keep rolling...
