RFH 137 Reading Dunayevskaya's “Form and Plan” in 2025 (Part I)

Play Episode Listen Later May 10, 2025 55:03

Co-hosts Andrew Kliman and Gabriel Donnelly dive into the archives! This is the first of a two-part discussion of the text of a presentation that Raya Dunayevskaya gave in the early 1950s, titled “Form and Plan.” She argues that the alternatives are not whether or not to plan, but the “despotic” plan of capital vs. the cooperative plan of “freely associated men.” The despotic plan is a form of capitalism that reveals its despotic essence. Thus, Dunayevskaya sees “form” in a new light, not as something opposed to and less important than “essence,” but as something that forms and reveals essence. This insight gives her a new appreciation of volume 3 of Capital, which deals with the forms that capitalism takes in the market and in thought. She argues that “we” (the Johnson-Forest Tendency) “have greatly underestimated” that volume, because the JFT focused on counterposing form and essence in order to combat opponents who regard private property and markets, not capitalist production, as capitalism's distinctive feature. Plus current-events segment: On Josh Marshall's Talking Points Memo piece, “Trump's Already Lost.” The co- hosts discuss the kind of loss that Marshall has in mind, and the great distance between it and the total, thoroughgoing loss that is needed, They also discuss the Canadian election results, and the fact that Polievre's loss does not equate to an outright rejection of Canadian Trumpism. Radio Free Humanity is co-hosted by Gabriel Donnelly and Andrew Kliman, and sponsored by Marxist-Humanist Initiative (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/ ).

Co-hosts Andrew Kliman and Gabriel Donnelly dive deep into Henryk Grossman's model and theory of capitalist breakdown. They discuss Andrew's upcoming new article on Grossman, and Andrew's dialogue with a Grossman defender. MHI has recently published an article by Michael Rednitz, “Grossman's “Correction” of Marx's Law of the Tendential Fall in the Rate of Profit,” and the co-hosts also discuss its contributions to the critique of Grossmanism. This episode is a continuation of MHI's prior engagements with Grossmanism, including two prior episodes of this podcast series. In episode 53 we first discussed Grossman's model and theory of capitalist breakdown, and in episode 69 we interviewed author Ted Reese about his book on Grossmanism. Additionally, Andrew led three class sessions on Grossmanism last fall. Plus current-events segment: The co-hosts discuss the Trumpist tariffs, and the conspiratorial, outdated economic thinking that inspired it. They consider the serious risk of a Trump-induced global recession.

The discussants consider how Trumpism in America threatens democracy everywhere. They also discuss the rise of the Freedom Party in Austria. Franz explains the fascist roots of the Freedom Party and how a coalition government was formed to keep the far right out of power and the chancellorship. Plus current-events segment: The co-hosts discuss the latest Trumpist assault on the civil liberties of immigrants—including the illegal arrests of Mahmoud Khalil and Dr. Rasha Alawieh, and the mass deportations to an El Salvadorian prison—and the lackluster response from Democrats. Play Episode Listen Later Mar 10, 2025 57:06

Co-hosts Andrew Kliman and Gabriel Donnelly discuss Karl Marx's 1852 book “The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte,” written soon after French president Louis Napoleon—or, as Marx refers to him, Louis Napoleon—staged an auto-coup in 1851, replacing a parliamentary republic with “rule by bayonet.” Shortly thereafter, he declared himself Emperor Napoleon III. Much of the discussion focuses on how Marx considered history, political struggle, and parties in relationship to the broader class struggle. The co hosts focus especially on his claim that French political parties and figures “represented” social classes. While they note striking similarities between the assaults on democracy in Louis Bonaparte's France and in Donald Trump's US (and elsewhere) today, they also discuss the pitfalls of trying to draw simple comparisons between substantially different political, economic, and cultural situations. Plus current-events segment: Trump administration chaos creating macroeconomic chaos. The co-hosts discuss how Trump's on-again, off again tariffs and other chaos have led to widespread economic uncertainty, and the likely consequences of that uncertainty.

RFH 132 American Trade Unionism in the Face of Trumpism

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 25, 2025 65:02

Co-hosts Andrew Kliman and Gabriel Donnelly discuss Gabriel's upcoming article “American Unionism and Trump: Where are the unions in the struggle against Trumpism?” set to be published soon in Marxist-Humanist Initiative's publication With Sober Senses. The co-hosts, and the article, consider the state of trade unionism after Trump's second election. In particular, they discuss the regulatory framework of federal labor law in America. Trump has already begun meddling with existing labor-law precedent, and the response from trade union leaders has been lacking. An important aspect of their discussion is the quandary that American trade unions find themselves in. The example of the Amazon Labor Union is used to show how difficult a “new beginning” can be. The ALU had seemed like a new moment in the American labor struggle, but they stumbled and were eventually subsumed into the Teamsters. Plus current-events segment: the co-hosts discuss embattled New York City mayor Eric Adams and Trump's attempts to get Adams's corruption charges dropped. They consider how Trumpism encourages corruption and cronyism, to ensure loyalty to Trump, and they discuss how this may be combatted.

In honor of Gabriel Donnelly recently finishing his first-time reading of Marx's “Capital,” Volume I, from cover to cover, Andrew Kliman interviews him about the experience. Gabriel is asked why it took him so long, and what the experience was like. Andrew gets in on the fun, telling the story of his own first-time reading. The co-hosts also discuss several aspects of “Capital,” including the concept of labor-power and the distinction between absolute and relative surplus-value, and why it is important—and possible—to read “Capital” without a reading guide, despite the supposed difficulty of the text. The co-hosts hope that this episode will inspire any listener who hasn't yet cracked the spine to dive into this text.

Resuming a discussion of Paul Raekstad's “Karl Marx's Realist Critique of Capitalism,”the co-hosts respond to the book's interpretation of Marx's conception of socialist society. Paul contends that socialism, for Marx, centers on democratic planning, ending the division of labor, and distribution according to need. The co-hosts discuss important features of Marx's concept of socialism that this formulation leaves out and its inattention to the economic differences between socialism's lower and higher phases. They suggest that, if we want to realize socialism, here and now, and we want to critique Stalinism realistically and effectively, focus on the lower phase is needed. (The co-hosts have invited Paul Raekstad back to the podcast to discuss the issues.) Plus current-events segment: the co-hosts discuss the inauguration and the first week of Trump's second terms. Keller's report has yet to be released, but keep your eyes on Marxist-Humanist Initiative's publication, With Sober Senses, where it will be published. They also discuss the political situation in Germany, where support for the Ukrainian war effort has become a political hot topic. The hosts and Keller consider how the far-right Alternative for Deutschland is eager to abandon the Ukrainians to Putin, and how Trump and Musk are cheering that party on. Plus current-events segment: Michael Podhorzer's article “How Trump ‘Won.'” Trump's victory was not from a huge upsurge in votes, but due to a collapse in Democratic turnout. In particular, they discuss the current lack of a concerted resistance, the elected Democrats who are toying with collaboration, and what makes 2024 different from 2016. Additionally, they consider the fragile state of the global situation and of American democracy. An important aspect of their discussion is the need for a theoretical framework for understanding Trumpism to be part of any resistance. They discuss how the rise of the split-ballot voters shows the need for a serious conception of Trumpism to undergird any serious mass resistance Plus current-events segment: the fall of Assad and the bombshell events in Syria. She lays out how she thinks Western leftists should respond, discusses her optimism that the conflict will end, and stresses that most Jewish immigrants to Israel did not have “settler- colonialist” aims, but came as refugees with nowhere else to go—and that they, and Palestinians, still have nowhere else to go. Plus current-events segment: “Has Trump finally ‘crossed the line' into fascism? What line?” Andrew responds to an Atlantic piece by NeverTrump conservative Tom Nichols.
