If money makes the world go round, then data tells you how fast it's spinning and when it might stop. 90% of all data was generated in the last 2 years and every 2 years the volume of data doubles. With 11 billion devices connected to the internet today, the annual global data generation in 2025 is expected to be 181 zettabytes, that's 181 trillion gigabytes. To put it in context, we use about 3 gigabytes to stream netflix in high definition for an hour. In other words, the modern world can't live without data. To continue to understand the world, especially as we move ever more into the digital age of AI, we must better understand the data we are creating. And this means in every part of life, including in business. Alexander Igelsböck, Co-Founder and CEO of Adverity joins us to show how data can unlock business opportunities and create a competitive advantage. Florian Jacquier, Global Head of Data Consumer Engagement at Nestlé, discusses the importance for large global companies to see, understand and action your data correctly. Dr Clare Walsh, Director of Education at the Institute of Analytics, highlights how data is used by organisations and governments and the importance of data policy and governance. Spurious Correlations in Financial Markets

In the financial markets, it's common to spurious correlations based on historical data. However, the economic landscape has evolved, and banks now invest more in treasuries and borrow from the Fed rather than traditional lending. This shift questions the yield curve's predictive power. Additionally, spurious correlations show absurd links between unrelated data points, emphasizing the need for critical analysis of data to avoid misleading narratives.  Today we discuss...  Financial markets often draw conclusions from patterns, such as the inverted yield curve predicting recessions. Today's economy differs from 30 years ago, with banks favoring treasuries over traditional lending, altering the yield curve's predictive power. Correlation does not always imply causation; the inverted yield curve's causative effect may be weakened. Spurious correlations can be humorous but highlight the pitfalls of finding meaning in random data patterns. The bond market, at $130 trillion, dwarfs the $50 trillion US stock market and $100 trillion global stock market. The increasing debt and bond market highlight the importance of access to capital. AI's impact is currently seen as limited by many CEOs, viewing it as a potential rather than immediate profit driver. Microsoft's expenses on data centers have increased significantly, reflecting the infrastructure investment for cloud and AI services. Commercial real estate faces challenges, with significant losses on properties due to rising interest rates and reduced demand. Residential real estate is also under pressure, with 41.4% of median income now spent on new mortgages, surpassing 2008 levels. Do Doctors know best? How do you explain the risks and benefits of a medicine when you yourself don't really know? We chat to Maricarmen Climént, Research and Editorial Officer at Sense about Science about risk communication and how we best help patients to make better choices in the face of uncertainty?Maricarmen has a diverse background in science journalism and risk communication and holds a degree in Veterinary Medicine and an MSc in Science Communication. She also worked for four years at the Winton Centre for Risk and Evidence Communication at the University of Cambridge, which we discuss. Do clinicians, deep down, think they know best? How can you teach risk to those whose career is predicated on supposedly knowing everything? How do you explain complexity in a simple way when the reality is rarely simple?Things are never certain and we discuss how clinicians can best navigate this difficult terrain and the importance of training in understanding and explaining risk. Dr Julian Treadwell's research we mention - " GPs' knowledge of the absolute benefits and harms of treatments is poor, with inaccuracies of a magnitude likely to meaningfully affect clinical decision-making and impede conversations with patients regarding treatment choices" https://bjgpopen.org/content/4/1/bjgpopen20X101016In our micro-discussion we delve into the paper “Bad news: how the media reported on an observational study about cardiovascular outcomes of COVID-19”. The co-hosts expose a real-world case of spurious correlation—the correlation between industry-level “values” and “prices,” drawing on chapter 11 of Andrew's book, Reclaiming Marx's “Capital,” and “Christianity versus Alternative Faith Bases,” his parody of the value-price correlation “studies.” They discuss why the value-price correlations are spurious, who started value-price correlation mania and why, what it has to do with Karl Marx's actual value theory, how Andrew became involved, and more. He refutes objections to his findings made by Paul Cockshott & Allin Cottrell and by Emilio Díaz & Rubén Osuna. Plus current-events segment: Razing Arizona—and the US? Near-total ban on abortion resurrected by Arizona's Supreme Court. Anne Jaclard joins the co-hosts to discuss the implications. Niche Pursuits Podcast

Welcome back to another episode of the Niche Pursuits News Podcast, where Spencer and Jared talk about the biggest news over the last week in Google, SEO, and AI.  They also give an update on some of their side hustles and top it all off with some very weird and entertaining niche sites. They kick off this week's call by announcing big news: Google has just finished rolling out the spam update, although the core update will continue to be rolled out for another two weeks. The spam update targeted three types of abuse: scaled content, expired domain, and site reputation (also known as parasite SEO), though the latter will technically be targeted in May.  They share a tweet from Lily Ray, where she details the winners and losers from the update, and then Spencer looks at a handful of their data in Ahrefs.  If you take a closer look at the “winners,” you can see examples of sites that are crushing it and do your own deep-dive analysis. They also look at sites that were absolutely crushed in the update, as we can learn from both.  Listen to the full episode to see their analysis and which sites are doing well and poorly. Moving along, the next news item is that Google is shaking things up a bit internally, replacing the Head of Search, among other roles.  What do Spencer and Jared make of this? And what does the new head, Liz Reid, talk about primarily in her announcement? What does she see as the future of search? And what's motivating these changes at Google? Tune in to hear what they think! During the Side Hustle Shenanigans segment of the podcast, Spencer goes first and talks about his Amazon Influencer business. He reveals his current earnings and reports that his earnings have become almost entirely passive since he hasn't really uploaded videos since December. Jared just finished his call with the Niche Pursuits Community, where he talks in detail about his business and how he's grown it. Spencer did a call the previous week where he shared all the details behind his Amazon Influencer business as well. If you want to see those videos and enjoy many other aspects of the Community, you can join right here!  When it's Jared's turn, he talks about deleting 18% of the subscribers to his Weekend Growth newsletter. He shares the process for culling the list and trying to re-engage with disinterested subscribers, and the resulting open rate after the process. Spencer then shares his process for managing the people on his list who are disengaged. Which approach resonates the most with you? Check out the episode to hear how their strategies differ.  When it's time to talk about Weird Niche Sites, Spencer goes first with Ling's Cars. From the psychedelic background to Ling's bobbing head, the site definitely leans into its weirdness. The owner also uses some unique real-life marketing strategies but doesn't have a very strong SEO game. Most of its traffic is direct or comes from social media, reaching 84k visitors last month. When it's Jared's turn, he shares the personal website, Tyler Vigen. The section that has gone viral is called Spurious Correlations, where he shows correlations between two completely random things, like Amazon's stock price and the popularity of the name Stevie. There's a very entertaining AI component to this DR74 site, although it's not ranking for a lot of keywords or getting much traffic, and the owner is not monetizing in any way. And that brings us to the end of another episode of the Niche Pursuits News podcast, where Spencer and Jared break down the latest important news in the sector and seek to motivate listeners with their side hustles. In the 1980s, whilst the media stirred up frenzies over Satanists in our midst or a nuclear bomb landing in Washington, a reporter made a documentary adding vaccines to the growing list of dangers. Vaccine Roulette claimed the pertussis vaccine caused brain damage in kids, which led to a drop in immunizations, a rise in whooping cough, and a near-end to the production of vaccines. On Strange Country, cohosts Beth and Kelly talk about this antivax movement spawned during the time of leg warmers and Alf, and continues to impact the current vaccine hesitancy we see today. The news is full of contradictions. We hear talk of an inflationary bubble and runaway housing costs are met with Fed tightening and the end of the stimulus. A record number of Millennials are starting families, experiencing record low unemployment and rising wages. And yet those wages aren't keeping pace with record inflation. Add to this supply chain problems, a lack of affordable housing, bank tightening and rising commodity prices seem to add a level of uncertainty not seen in our lifetime. This week we want to talk economics. We are trying to separate the signal from the noise. Our guest is a man who has been studying housing prices since founding his firm in 1986. We'll ask Jonathan which of those headlines matter most to the real estate market, and which we can safely ignore.

But it is expected and does indicate we're at (or near) a bottom with quality at really cheap valuations. Top40 just holding above 45,000 making us literally a few hundred points away from an official bear market locally. El Niño likelihood now at 70%, bad for food producers and consumers. I have found a website that tracks the likelihood, it Australian but weather don't care for borders.  Saudi Arabia oil chief says OPEC in ‘produce as much as you can’ mode and Brent drops to $76 after peaking at $84 recently. Bad news for Sasol* (JSE code: SOL) but coupled with ZAR at R14.40 potentially good news for consumers. Long4Life* (JSE code: L4L) results, they have cash and cash equivalents of R1.05bn, about 115c a share. Still mostly the old Holdsport business at 60% of revenue and 64% trading profit. Nu-World (JSE code: NWL) results show HEPS +11.5% and dividend +11.9%. Really good results in a very tough economy (helped by a swing in currency translation gains of some R46million). One concern is a bank overdraft of R133million, up from R59million and I always ask why an overdraft and not a formal loan structure? The stock is on a PE of under 5x and a dividend yield of over 6%, staggeringly cheap, but this has always been the case with this stock and the question is what will trigger a rerating higher? MTBPS R27.4bn revenue shortfall for 2018, and a R85bn shortfall in revenue over the next three years. Treasury revised down its growth projection for 2018 from 1.5% to 0.7%, rising to 2.3% in 2021. Debt as a percentage of GDP will continue rising, reaching 59% at the end of 2022, from 50.7% in 2016/17. Three items – white bread flour, cake flour and sanitary pads will be zero VAT rated from next year. "Demolish the walls between public and private sectors." Privatisation? Subscriber to our feed here Subscribe or review us in iTunes Correlation is not causation Correlation is when two things are seemingly linked but more important is causation when they really are linked and one leads to another. As humans we live by the mantra of 'what causes what' and this remains very important to our species, but we get it wrong far to often. Some are simple and correct, increasing earnings from a company will in time result in a higher share price. But in the short term all sorts of issues are driving price that most often have nothing to do with the state of the company underlying that share price. Hence stocks get cheap and expensive creating opportunity for investors. But we need to be very careful of linking events that while they seem linked are not linked. A great website Spurious Correlations has many correlations that have no bearing on each other. One example is “people who drowned after falling out of a fishing boat” correlates 95.24% with “marriage rates in Kentucky”. Now nobody really believes that in this example one causes the other. We're constantly being bombarded with data and trying to figure out what drives that data and what impact it'll have. Part of the problem here is the 24 hour instant news agenda. Markets move and news needs a reason beyond buyers vs. sellers. So we find a reason, one that seems to fit but may very likely not be true. The point here is two fold; Understand our desire as humans to link one event to another (think of the things we 'see' in the clouds). More often then not the links that we take for granted are weak at best and more likely Spurious. Be very skeptical about supposedly causation. Interrogate the logic and confirm it for yourself, don't just trust what seems right. JSE – The JSE is a registered trademark of the JSE Limited.
