(This episode was recorded before the tragic murder of ICU nurse Alex Pretti by ICE in Minneapolis yesterday). On this episode of The Siren Podcast, Jo is joined by Siren contributor Kaivan Shroff to discuss his latest piece for MS NOW, titled: “Cell phone videos are protecting Americans — and eroding our privacy.” There is no doubt that the thousands of videos from citizens documenting ICE are protecting Americans, and in some cases, have even saved lives. In the face of a brutal regime that lies to its citizens with every breath they take, the videos are playing a crucial role in spreading rapid-response information and organizing strategies to on the ground ICE protestors. The videos are also shining a light on the atrocities ICE is committing everyday for Americans who either once supported Trump, or never took the time to deeply examine the immigration issue. In other words, the video documentation is rapidly turning Americans against Trump, and radicalizing them against ICE and the regime. A reported 73% of Americans saw the video of Renee Good's murder by ICE, and 45% say they support abolishing ICE. That number will only grow with yesterday's execution-style killing of ICU nurse Alex Pretti. But as Kaivan tells us, this firmly accelerates our march towards a surveillance state. He writes in his piece: “Every viral video, live-streamed arrest or crowdsourced map expands the mass-surveillance landscape in the United States. Our phones become both a shield and a monitor. The Feisty, former Navy Helicopter Pilot got right to work, signing two executive orders during her inaugural speech, declaring a state of emergency on utility costs in New Jersey. One order freezes utility rate hikes, and another aims to develop new sources of electricity production to lower utility costs in the long term. The newly sworn-in Democrat sought to contrast the history and character of her state against the Trump Regime. Speaking on the Declaration of Independence, Sherrill says "The people of New Jersey recognize the parallels" between British King George III and President Trump. She accuses the president of "illegally usurping power" and imposing a "Tariff Regime" that hurts New Jerseyans so he can enrich himself. Gov. Sherrill promised to make New Jersey a "New Ark" for "Liberty and Prosperity," drawing on the state's motto. She says she will sign executive orders to freeze energy rate hikes and will fight what she views as abuses of power by the Federal Government.

On today's show, host Esty Dinur is joined by Alfred W. McCoy to talk about his latest book, Cold War on Five Continents: A Global History of Empire and Espionage, available from Haymarket Books. His book offers an intimate portrait of both covert operatives and antiwar activists, thus humanizing a history often told in impersonal terms of nuclear arsenals or diplomatic ententes. Turning away from the usual focus of the Moscow-Washington stalemate, McCoy looks at the regions of the world where the Cold War was actually fought, arguing that Southeast Asia experienced the worst of Cold War violence. From South Vietnam to the Middle East, to Africa and Latin America the major world powers fought surrogate wars amounting to 20 million deaths.  McCoy describes how the US spread its military around the world and operated covertly in Afghanistan, Angola, and elsewhere. He says that the first success of “the man on the spot,” Kermit Roosevelt Jr., was in Iran where he helped to install the Shah in “a spectacularly successful exhibit of regime change.” McCoy says that we're currently seeing a “radical shift in US geopolitical posture” moving away from “an international system of law and commerce to becoming a regional hegemony” as seen in what McCoy calls Trump's “tri-continental strategy.” Trump has decided to concentrate US power in the Americas, from Canada to Greenland and Venezuela. He says that Trump views oil and power as synonymous, but this is a miscalculation on Trump's part. McCoy sees the era of oil as over and the next horizon is in renewables and will be dominated by China.  Alfred W. McCoy holds the Harrington chair in history at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Since earning a history doctorate in 1977, his teaching and writing have focused on Southeast Asian history, modern empires, and the covert netherworld of syndicate crime and state security.
