Co-hosts Andrew Kliman and Gabriel Donnelly dive into the archives! This is the first of a two-part discussion of the text of a presentation that Raya Dunayevskaya gave in the early 1950s, titled “Form and Plan.” She argues that the alternatives are not whether or not to plan, but the “despotic” plan of capital vs. the cooperative plan of “freely associated men.” The despotic plan is a form of capitalism that reveals its despotic essence. Thus, Dunayevskaya sees “form” in a new light, not as something opposed to and less important than “essence,” but as something that forms and reveals essence. This insight gives her a new appreciation of volume 3 of Capital, which deals with the forms that capitalism takes in the market and in thought. She argues that “we” (the Johnson-Forest Tendency) “have greatly underestimated” that volume, because the JFT focused on counterposing form and essence in order to combat opponents who regard private property and markets, not capitalist production, as capitalism's distinctive feature. Plus current-events segment: On Josh Marshall's Talking Points Memo piece, “Trump's Already Lost.” The co- hosts discuss the kind of loss that Marshall has in mind, and the great distance between it and the total, thoroughgoing loss that is needed, They also discuss the Canadian election results, and the fact that Polievre's loss does not equate to an outright rejection of Canadian Trumpism. Radio Free Humanity is co-hosted by Gabriel Donnelly and Andrew Kliman, and sponsored by Marxist-Humanist Initiative (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/ ).
Co-hosts Andrew Kliman and Gabriel Donnelly dive deep into Henryk Grossman's model and theory of capitalist breakdown. They discuss Andrew's upcoming new article on Grossman, and Andrew's dialogue with a Grossman defender. MHI has recently published an article by Michael Rednitz, “Grossman's “Correction” of Marx's Law of the Tendential Fall in the Rate of Profit,” and the co-hosts also discuss its contributions to the critique of Grossmanism. This episode is a continuation of MHI's prior engagements with Grossmanism, including two prior episodes of this podcast series. In episode 53 we first discussed Grossman's model and theory of capitalist breakdown, and in episode 69 we interviewed author Ted Reese about his book on Grossmanism. Additionally, Andrew led three class sessions on Grossmanism last fall. Plus current-events segment: The co-hosts discuss the Trumpist tariffs, and the conspiratorial, outdated economic thinking that inspired it. They consider the serious risk of a Trump-induced global recession.
Co-hosts Andrew Kliman and Gabriel Donnelly welcome Franz Schaefer, a Communist and political activist in Austria, on the show to discuss Trumpism and the rise of the far-right. The discussants consider how Trumpism in America threatens democracy everywhere. They also discuss the rise of the Freedom Party in Austria. Franz explains the fascist roots of the Freedom Party and how a coalition government was formed to keep the far right out of power and the chancellorship. Plus current-events segment: The co-hosts discuss the latest Trumpist assault on the civil liberties of immigrants—including the illegal arrests of Mahmoud Khalil and Dr. Rasha Alawieh, and the mass deportations to an El Salvadorian prison—and the lackluster response from Democrats. Radio Free Humanity is co-hosted by Gabriel Donnelly and Andrew Kliman, and sponsored by Marxist-Humanist Initiative (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/ ).
Co-hosts Andrew Kliman and Gabriel Donnelly discuss Karl Marx's 1852 book “The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte,” written soon after French president Louis Napoleon—or, as Marx refers to him, Louis Napoleon—staged an auto-coup in 1851, replacing a parliamentary republic with “rule by bayonet.” Shortly thereafter, he declared himself Emperor Napoleon III. Much of the discussion focuses on how Marx considered history, political struggle, and parties in relationship to the broader class struggle. The co hosts focus especially on his claim that French political parties and figures “represented” social classes. While they note striking similarities between the assaults on democracy in Louis Bonaparte's France and in Donald Trump's US (and elsewhere) today, they also discuss the pitfalls of trying to draw simple comparisons between substantially different political, economic, and cultural situations. Plus current-events segment: Trump administration chaos creating macroeconomic chaos. The co-hosts discuss how Trump's on-again, off again tariffs and other chaos have led to widespread economic uncertainty, and the likely consequences of that uncertainty.
Co-hosts Andrew Kliman and Gabriel Donnelly discuss Gabriel's upcoming article “American Unionism and Trump: Where are the unions in the struggle against Trumpism?” set to be published soon in Marxist-Humanist Initiative's publication With Sober Senses. The co-hosts, and the article, consider the state of trade unionism after Trump's second election. In particular, they discuss the regulatory framework of federal labor law in America. Trump has already begun meddling with existing labor-law precedent, and the response from trade union leaders has been lacking. An important aspect of their discussion is the quandary that American trade unions find themselves in. The example of the Amazon Labor Union is used to show how difficult a “new beginning” can be. The ALU had seemed like a new moment in the American labor struggle, but they stumbled and were eventually subsumed into the Teamsters. Plus current-events segment: the co-hosts discuss embattled New York City mayor Eric Adams and Trump's attempts to get Adams's corruption charges dropped. They consider how Trumpism encourages corruption and cronyism, to ensure loyalty to Trump, and they discuss how this may be combatted.
In honor of Gabriel Donnelly recently finishing his first-time reading of Marx's “Capital,” Volume I, from cover to cover, Andrew Kliman interviews him about the experience. Gabriel is asked why it took him so long, and what the experience was like. Andrew gets in on the fun, telling the story of his own first-time reading. The co-hosts also discuss several aspects of “Capital,” including the concept of labor-power and the distinction between absolute and relative surplus-value, and why it is important—and possible—to read “Capital” without a reading guide, despite the supposed difficulty of the text. The co-hosts hope that this episode will inspire any listener who hasn't yet cracked the spine to dive into this text.
Resuming a discussion of Paul Raekstad's “Karl Marx's Realist Critique of Capitalism,”the co-hosts respond to the book's interpretation of Marx's conception of socialist society. Paul contends that socialism, for Marx, centers on democratic planning, ending the division of labor, and distribution according to need. The co-hosts discuss important features of Marx's concept of socialism that this formulation leaves out and its inattention to the economic differences between socialism's lower and higher phases. They suggest that, if we want to realize socialism, here and now, and we want to critique Stalinism realistically and effectively, focus on the lower phase is needed. (The co-hosts have invited Paul Raekstad back to the podcast to discuss the issues.) Plus current-events segment: the co-hosts discuss the inauguration and the first week of Trump's second terms. Radio Free Humanity is co-hosted by Gabriel Donnelly and Andrew Kliman, and sponsored by Marxist-Humanist Initiative (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/ ).
Co-hosts Andrew Kliman and Gabriel Donnelly welcome past guest and Marxist-Humanist Ralph Keller on the show to discuss the status of the Ukrainian struggle against Putin's invasion. They discuss the Ukrainian incursion into Kursk, the rising resistance in Russian, and the imperative need for foreign aid to Ukraine's struggle. Keller's report has yet to be released, but keep your eyes on Marxist-Humanist Initiative's publication, With Sober Senses, where it will be published. They also discuss the political situation in Germany, where support for the Ukrainian war effort has become a political hot topic. The hosts and Keller consider how the far-right Alternative for Deutschland is eager to abandon the Ukrainians to Putin, and how Trump and Musk are cheering that party on. Plus current-events segment: Michael Podhorzer's article “How Trump ‘Won.'” Trump's victory was not from a huge upsurge in votes, but due to a collapse in Democratic turnout. The co-hosts also discuss the issue of political disengagement and highly alienated voters Radio Free Humanity is co-hosted by Gabriel Donnelly and Andrew Kliman, and sponsored by Marxist-Humanist Initiative (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/ ).
Co-hosts Andrew Kliman and Gabriel Donnelly discuss Marxist-Humanist Initiative's upcoming editorial “The New Stage of Struggle Against Trumpism.” The co-hosts, and the editorial, consider the situation we all face after Trump's second election. In particular, they discuss the current lack of a concerted resistance, the elected Democrats who are toying with collaboration, and what makes 2024 different from 2016. Additionally, they consider the fragile state of the global situation and of American democracy. An important aspect of their discussion is the need for a theoretical framework for understanding Trumpism to be part of any resistance. They discuss how the rise of the split-ballot voters shows the need for a serious conception of Trumpism to undergird any serious mass resistance Plus current-events segment: the fall of Assad and the bombshell events in Syria. Almost everyone was taken aback by these developments, the co-hosts included, and they consider how this situation is still in flux. Radio Free Humanity is co-hosted by Gabriel Donnelly and Andrew Kliman, and sponsored by Marxist-Humanist Initiative (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/ ).
Author and communications expert Tim Ward joins co-hosts Andrew Kliman and Gabriel Donnelly to discuss what it means to stand up for truth in politics. The discussants considered how the Harris campaign handled the issue of post-truth politics, how Trump will continue to erode truth, and cognitive biases that help fuel the power of post-truth lies. Much of the discussion considered how a positive movement for truth, in the face of post-truth's encroachments, would actually look like and what such a movement would prioritize. To that end, the Pro-Truth Pledge was considered. Tim Ward is the coauthor with Gleb Tsipursky of Pro Truth: A Practical Plan for Putting Truth Back Into Politics, formerly sat on the executive board of the Pro-Truth Pledge, and blogs at Medium. The Pro-Truth Pledge can be read and signed at its website. Plus current-events segment: the co-hosts discuss the recent protests in Georgia after the cessation of talks for the country to join the European Union. Radio Free Humanity is co-hosted by Gabriel Donnelly and Andrew Kliman, and sponsored by Marxist-Humanist Initiative (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/ ).

Carlos Ezquerra and Sebastián Hernandez join co-hosts Andrew Kliman and Gabriel Donnelly to discuss the rising influence of libertarianism in the Spanish-speaking world. Much of the discussion focuses on the influential book “Anti-Marx,” published by Spanish libertarian Juan Ramón Rallo in 2022, and Andrew's recent response to it. Andrew demonstrated that Rallo's attempt to destroy “Capital's” theories of value, the origin of profit, and the falling rate of profit is a complete failure. Sebastián's translation projects are also discussed. Plus current-events segment: the co-hosts discuss Doug Henwood's recent apologetic in “Jacobin” on behalf of Trump voters. Radio Free Humanity is co-hosted by Gabriel Donnelly and Andrew Kliman, and sponsored by Marxist-Humanist Initiative (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/ ).
Radio Free Humanity celebrates its 125th episode with a two-hour Zoom chat between participants and the co-hosts, Andrew Kliman and Gabriel Donnelly. Listeners and some former guests joined the co-hosts on Zoom to make comments or ask questions. The discussion was overwhelmingly focused on the 2024 American presidential election and its consequences. Beyond the election, the co-hosts and participants discussed a variety of political and philosophical topics— the Marxist orientation towards liberal democracy, the political stature of trade unions, and the thinking behind the production of Radio Free Humanity. You can listen to the audio version of ChatRFH 2.0 broadcast here. The video version is on YouTube. . The co-hosts welcome Christos Balomenos of the University of Athens to discuss his recent articles that seriously challenge Michael Heinrich's allegations against Marx's falling-rate-of-profit theory. After painstaking archival research, Christos flatly rejects Heinrich's claims that Marx had second thoughts about the theory and that Engels' editing distorted Marx's texts on the topic. In addition to reviewing the evidence, Christos and the co-hosts discuss why Marx's theory is important, what motivates Heinrich's allegations, and related matters. Plus current-events segment on Jack Smith's superseding indictment. Has he succeeded in outwitting the Stench Court and its immunity ruling? ChatRFH 2.0 on SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 10, STARTING at 1 PM EST! Chat with Gabriel and Andrew in a live videocast ep. of RFH. Jane Michaels, a Marxist-Humanist and lifelong rural white Wisconsinite, joins the cohosts to discuss Tom Schaller and Paul Waldman's recent book, “White Rural Rage.” They talk about the book's focus on rural whites as the base of Trumpism and resurgent authoritarianism in the US, negative feedback the book has received, J.D. Vance's “Hillbilly Elegy,” causes of “white rural rage,” and what can be done to stop the ascendancy of white supremacism and authoritarianism. Plus current-events segment: The Real Trump Mystery: why does half of the voting public support a malignant narcissistic Mussolini wannabe who is unfit to breathe our air? ChatRFH 2.0 COMING SOON! Sunday, November 10, starting at 1 pm EST. Chat with Gabriel and Andrew in a live videocast ep. of RFH. Check MHI's website for Zoom link and details (also coming soon). Aaron Williams talks with the co-hosts about his experiences during decades of work as a union staff member. He stresses that the job of a staffer is “not emancipatory,” because a union is a “service organization.” He and the co-hosts also talk about how the labor movement and the challenges it faces have changed over the years, including some positive developments. Plus current-events segment: the struggle over “judicial reform” in Mexico. Radio Free Humanity is co-hosted by Gabriel Donnelly and Andrew Kliman, and sponsored by Marxist-Humanist Initiative (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/ ).
The co-hosts welcome Ralph Keller, author of “Treating the TSSI Like a Dead Dog: A Response to Seth Ackerman,” which responds to a “Jacobin” piece by Ackerman. Ralph explains why he regards Ackerman's conduct as “unscholarly” and “intellectual immorality.” He calls out Ackerman for ignoring the fact that the “Okishio theorem” has been disproven. He and the co-hosts discuss several related issues, including Marx's ”failure” to prove that the rate of profit must fall. Toward the end of the interview, Andrew and Ralph discuss their forthcoming article that charges Ackerman with having egregiously misused simulation results to produce a revised rate of profit that skyrockets from 1985 onward. Plus current-events segment: Implications of Joe Biden's Abysmal Debate Performance. SUMMER 2024 SCHEDULE: We intend to release new eps once a month, on the first Friday of the month. The next episode, Ep. 120, is slated for release on August 2. The regular schedule will resume with Ep. 121, slated for release on Sept. 6. The co-hosts respond to Suresh Naidu's piece in “Jacobin,” “What Marx Really Meant.” They begin by discussing norms of interpretation (of texts and of history), with emphasis on why principled interpretation is ethically important. They critique Brill, a major publisher, for insinuating that texts can't be misinterpreted. They then respond in detail to Naidu, showing that he was not telling the truth when he claimed not to be concerned with “what Marx really meant,” and defending the importance of getting the meaning of texts right against his vitriolic attack. Plus current-events segment, “People of New York 34, Trump 0,” on the historic felony conviction of Donald J. Trump. SUMMER 2024 SCHEDULE: We intend to release new eps once a month, on the first Friday of the month. The next episode, Ep. 119, is slated for release on July 5. The regular schedule will resume with Ep. 121, slated for release on Sept. 6. Gabriel and Andrew welcome William Clare Roberts, author of Marx's Inferno: The Political Theory of “Capital,” in which he reads the first volume of Capital as a work of political theory. They discuss differences between this and other ways of reading Capital, its engagement with Proudhonism and related non-Marxist tendencies on the left, Marx's relation to the radical republican tradition, and the specificity of his concept of capitalist exploitation. They also discuss “Hell” imagery in radical literature, Will's contention that “volume one of Capital must be taken as Marx's last testament,” and more. Plus current-events segment: The situation in Rafah and the current state of the Hamas-Israel war SUMMER 2024 SCHEDULE: We intend to release new eps once a month, on the first Friday of the month. The next episode, Ep. 118 is slated for release on June 7. The regular schedule will resume with Ep. 121, slated for release on Sept. 6. Episode 116: Is There Life After Tankieism?: BadMouse Recants, BadMouths Stalinism The co-hosts welcome Dave, aka BadMouse, who was a prominent Stalinist YouTuber but has since recanted. They discuss why some youth find Stalinism appealing, and why Dave himself turned to it. He then recounts how and why he became disillusioned. He and the co-hosts discuss “becom[ing] OK with not necessarily having all the answers,” and how to help people resist the pull of Stalinism, including the work that Dave is now doing on his BadMouse YouTube channel. Plus current-events segment: Internal divisions in GOP allow US to (finally) provide aid for Ukraine's defense against invasion. Radio Free Humanity is co-hosted by Gabriel Donnelly and Andrew Kliman, and sponsored by Marxist-Humanist Initiative (https://marxisthumanistinitiative.org/ ).
The co-hosts expose a real-world case of spurious correlation—the correlation between industry-level “values” and “prices,” drawing on chapter 11 of Andrew's book, Reclaiming Marx's “Capital,” and “Christianity versus Alternative Faith Bases,” his parody of the value-price correlation “studies.” They discuss why the value-price correlations are spurious, who started value-price correlation mania and why, what it has to do with Karl Marx's actual value theory, how Andrew became involved, and more. He refutes objections to his findings made by Paul Cockshott & Allin Cottrell and by Emilio Díaz & Rubén Osuna. Plus current-events segment: Razing Arizona—and the US? Near-total ban on abortion resurrected by Arizona's Supreme Court. Anne Jaclard joins the co-hosts to discuss the implications. Radio Free Humanity is co-hosted by Gabriel Donnelly and Andrew Kliman, and sponsored by Marxist-Humanist Initiative (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/ ).
Andrew Kliman and Gabriel Donnelly welcome Scott Homan and Chad Rhiger to discuss their film, “Witness Underground,” a documentary about young Jehovah's Witnesses with a shared interest in music who managed to break free from the religion. They discuss Scott and Chad's lives, the religion's attitude to truth, and its cruel practice of shunning. The discussion also takes up cultish practices by other groups, religious and political; how to combat cultism; and the experience of “absolute possibility” upon leaving the Jehovah's Witnesses. Plus current-events segment: SCOCO DQs DJT. Anne Jaclard and Andrew talk about the Colorado Supreme Court's disqualification of Trump from running for president, and negative hot takes on the ruling coming from parts of the left (Eric Levitz, Ben Burgis).
Andrew Kliman and Gabriel Donnelly interview Yuval Idan, author of “To my Western leftist friends, from your leftist Israeli friend.” This widely read Medium post addresses Western leftists who treated Hamas' terrorist attack as “an unfortunate situation,” “stayed silent,” or “lecture[d] us about context and resistance.” After recounting her own political history, Yuval and the interviewers discuss the prevalence of such “Western leftist” reactions, why they shocked her, what accounts for them, and why she thinks they have harmed Israeli and Palestinian leftists' struggle. She lays out how she thinks Western leftists should respond, discusses her optimism that the conflict will end, and stresses that most Jewish immigrants to Israel did not have “settler- colonialist” aims, but came as refugees with nowhere else to go—and that they, and Palestinians, still have nowhere else to go. Plus current-events segment: “Has Trump finally ‘crossed the line' into fascism? What line?” Andrew responds to an Atlantic piece by NeverTrump conservative Tom Nichols.
Andrew Kliman and Brendan Cooney discuss this famous principle of distribution, in the context of Marx's work and as discussed in a recent Ph.D. dissertation by Edoardo Bellando, ”From Each According to His Ability, to Each According to His Needs”: What Could it Possibly Mean, and What Lies Behind this Marxian Principle? After briefly reviewing the origins of the principle and pre-Marx advocacy of it, Andrew and Brendan talk about what the principle means and doesn't mean as well as the part it plays within Marx's overall argument in the Critique of the Gotha Program. Plus current-events segment: Mike Who? Anne Jaclard, organizational secretary of Marxist-Humanist Initiative, joins Andrew to discuss the new Speaker of the US House of Representatives, a Christian nationalist who played a key role in the Trumpite conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election.
Brendan and Andrew discuss the Ukrainian fight for national self-determination, drawing lessons from V. I. Lenin's responses to “imperialist economists” and Rosa Luxemburg, who all claimed that national self- determination is unachievable under imperialism. The co-hosts review what “imperialist economism” meant at that time and they discuss parallels today, including a new variant––campist imperialist economism. The issues discussed include: what “national self-determination” and its achievement mean; how it is achievable, even in the context of inter-imperialist conflict, as in Ukraine today; and how arguments that national self-determination is unachievable often misuse the axiomatic method. (Owing to the special nature of the above discussion, this episode does not include a distinct current-events segment.) The next episode of Radio Free Humanity is scheduled to air starting on December 23, not December 16. Radio Free Humanity is co-hosted by Brendan Cooney and Andrew Kliman, and sponsored by Marxist-Humanist Initiative (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/ ).

Este episódio estará disponível com legendas no Youtube.
Marxist-feminist author Rohini Hensman joins the co-hosts to discuss her recent article “Ukraine's Protracted Struggle for National Liberation” as well as “pseudo-anti-imperialism” within the left. Hensman details the relation between Ukraine and Russia under Tsarist rule, the changes that occurred with the Bolshevik revolution, and then Stalin's recolonization of Ukraine. She and the co-hosts then discuss the situation since the USSR collapsed––widespread support for independence throughout Ukraine despite US opposition; what the Putin regime hopes to achieve by invading Ukraine; and why attempts to appease it are futile. The discussion of pseudo-anti-imperialism takes up the one-sided stances of Noam Chomsky and his followers. Current-events segment: Recent centrist Democratic proposals (from William Galston & Elaine Kamarck, and from Stanley Greenberg) to save US democracy from Trumpism by placating swing voters. This is part two of our discussion with Prof Andrew Kliman, where we debate my current love affair with ‘The Fundamental Principles of Communist Production and Distribution' by Jan Appel and the Group of International Communists.
This week we welcome back Prof. Andrew Kliman to the show. We get deep into some more value theory, specifically discussing the difference between concrete and abstract labour, simple and complex labour, and do slaves create value....The really excellent Patrick Murray value form debate episodes mentioned in the episode:https://soundcloud.com/mhi-120639128/rfh-murray-interview-ep-1https://soundcloud.com/mhi-120639128/rfh-murray-interview-part-2Also, the paper we are discussing is from the book 'The New Value Controversy and the Foundations of Economics' and is called 'The Duality of Labour'.
The co-hosts welcome Keith Kahn-Harris, author of Denial: The Unspeakable Truth. They discuss what the various kinds of denialism have in common, strategies to fight denialism, and confronting the “post-denialist” environment into which Kahn-Harris thinks we're moving. Much of the discussion focuses on his claims that denialism is a bad-faith strategy that people resort to when their true desires have become unspeakable, and that conflicts between denialists and their opponents are not just about the facts, but ultimately about morality. The co-hosts welcome back Ravi Bali to discuss his recently-published essay, “On Conducting Arguments in an Honest, Revolutionary Manner.” Ravi explains why he thinks truth-seeking should be an important goal for revolutionaries, and why revolutionaries should debate differences among us, instead of assuming that it's sufficient to agree about “the fundamentals.” He and the co-hosts also discuss procedures that allow for proper debate; examples of bad, and better, argumentative practices; and much more. The co-hosts take a new look at V. I. Lenin’s 1917 work, The State and Revolution. They discuss the significance of its return to Marx and Engels’ view that the state machine needs to be broken (“smashed”)––it isn’t a neutral mechanism that can simply be taken over––and how this differed from orthodox post-Marx Marxism. They also discuss the work’s relevance to today’s struggle for Black lives and why Lenin developed his argument through careful interpretation of what Marx and Engels wrote. In the latter part of the segment, they turn to the economic dimension of The State and Revolution. Was Lenin’s understanding of what he called the “transition” from capitalism to communism a return to Marx’s view? Was Lenin right that “accounting and control” is the main thing needed in the first phase of communism? How does that claim relate to his conception (rooted in Second-International Marxism) of how modern economies function? An essay by Andrew, “Why No Call to ‘Smash Capitalist Production’ in Lenin’s The State and Revolution?,” is referred to during the segment. The episode’s current-events segment focuses on the landslide victory of Larry Krasner, a tough-on-cops district attorney, in Philadelphia’s Democratic Party primary. Brendan and Andrew welcome Gabriel Donnelly, author of “Minneapolis After the Third Precinct,” and Anne Jaclard and Aaron Williams, main authors of Marxist-Humanist Initiative’s (MHI’s) editorial, “On the Conviction of George Floyd’s Murderer.” They discuss the implications of the verdict in Minneapolis––was it justice, a victory for Black Lives Matter, a breakthrough in the struggle for police accountability?––as well as Justice Department investigations of police departments, police-reform legislation, and how the struggle for Black lives can move forward now. Donnelly discusses why the Minneapolis police department wasn’t dismantled, even though a veto-proof majority of the city council voted to dismantle it. And Williams, author of “Death by Cop (Again) in Columbus, Ohio,” provides detailed commentary on the recent upsurge in police violence in Columbus and its vicinity. * ~ * ~ * ~ * Radio Free Humanity is a podcast covering news, politics and philosophy from a Marxist-Humanist perspective. Joining the co-hosts are Dr. Michael Fitzpatrick, a London physician active in the fight against COVID; John Gillott, a British sociologist of science and author of Bioscience, Governance and Politics; and Ravi Bali of Marxist-Humanist Initiative. They discuss governmental efforts to contain the pandemic, the backlash against these efforts—often justified by invocations of “freedom”––in the United Kingdom as well as the United States, and how opponents of containment efforts have spread misinformation. Some of the discussion focuses on recent articles, by Fitzpatrick and by Gillott, which criticize the “lockdown-skeptical” line taken by Spiked, a British online publication that emerged out of the revolutionary left. In the discussion, reference is also made to the Great Barrington Declaration and to Amanda Marcotte’s article, “The NRA way of life is ruining our nation.” In the episode’s current-events segment, Brendan and Andrew discuss Georgia’s new voter-suppression law and the fightback against it. The co-hosts continue their interview with David Norman Smith (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/episode-36-trumps-base-interview-with-david-norman-smith-part-1), a sociologist at the University of Kansas, about his research into the characteristics of Trump supporters and why they support Trump. Smith discusses questions about authoritarian attitudes that he contributed to a major voter survey, links between prejudice and desire for authoritarian leadership, and how Trump supporters’ attitudes compare to those of other voters. He and the co-costs also explore different views of economic policy within Trump’s base and whether support for Trump is due to “economic anxiety.” Much of the discussion deals with the “74.2 Million Question”––why is support for Trump so unshakeable?––and what to do in light of that. Smith criticizes as utopian the presumption that mass support for Trump is rooted in ignorance and can thus be countered by fact-based appeals. The episode’s current-events segment is about Tommy Craggs’ recent discussion (https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2020/12/whats-the-matter-with-cultural-politics/) of Stanley Greenberg’s famous focus groups (https://democracycorps.com/wp-content/uploads/1996/03/Middle-Class-Dreams-Chapter-2-Macomb-in-the-American-Mind.pdf) of “ Reagan Democrats” in Macomb County, Michigan, which offers further evidence that Trumpism was a pre-existing condition. * ~ * ~ * ~ * Radio Free Humanity is a podcast covering news, politics and philosophy from a Marxist-Humanist perspective. Anne Jaclard of Marxist-Humanist Initiative and the co-hosts defend Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s video (https://www.instagram.com/p/CKxlyx4g-Yb/?hl=en) on the Trumpites’ fascistic Capitol Insurrection, and AOC’s refusal to collaborate with Ted Cruz, against Glenn Greenwald’s sexist, red-brown attack on her (starting at 11:17 here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_tpgGvUUro). Much of the discussion focuses on Greenwald’s presumption that women who suffer no physical injury haven’t been harmed, and on the desire to unite “the left” and “the right” that underlies his rant. Limitations of other criticisms of Greenwald from the left are explored, and Jaclard raises the issue of why––over 50 years after “second-wave” feminism emerged––misogyny remains pervasive within “the left,” and what to do about that. Articles by the following authors, on the controversy and related matters, are cited during the discussion: Lichi D'Amelio (Jacobin - https://jacobinmag.com/2021/02/aoc-capitol-riot-instagram-assault); Jill Filipovic (Substack - https://jill.substack.com/); Jeet Heer (The Nation - https://www.thenation.com/article/politics/capitol-riot-aoc-accountability/); Eric Levitz (New York magazine - https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2020/12/jimmy-dore-aoc-medicare-for-all-strategy.html); Seren Morris (Newsweek - https://www.newsweek.com/michael-tracey-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-emotional-manipulation-backlash-1566099); and Ashley Reese (Jezebel - https://theslot.jezebel.com/the-cynical-sexist-fantasy-of-aoc-1846189707). Brendan and Andrew take a new look at the extensive “notes” that Raya Dunayevskaya made (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/RD-on-Coolidge.pdf) in preparation for a May 1946 Workers Party debate with “David Coolidge” (Ernest Rice McKinney) on the “Negro Question.” Coolidge held that class oppression is “primary” while racial oppression is “secondary”––a view that has resurfaced in recent years in Jacobin magazine and elsewhere (see our “Jaco-dustbin of History” ep.) (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/episode-21-consigned-to-the-jaco-dustbin-of-history). Similarly, Coolidge rejected, while Dunayevskaya advocated, the idea that revolutionaries should support an independent Black movement distinct from the “labor movement,” and their attitudes toward national self-determination for Black Americans differed sharply. While Dunayevskaya’s “notes” mostly summarize and respond to Coolidge’s 1945 “Bulletin on the Negro Question,” (https://www.marxists.org/history/etol/document/workersparty/misc/0444-1945-Bulletin%20on%20Negro%20Question.pdf) they also include other material, such as her recollection of discussions with Leon Trotsky about the issue. These “notes” and many other writings by Dunayevskaya on “the Black dimension” are available on the Archives page (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/archives-of-marxist-humanism) of our website. In the episode’s current-events segment, the co-hosts discuss the aftermath of the failed Capitol Insurrection. Will the US government finally fight back against violence perpetrated by Trumpites and other white nationalists? What effect will the deplatforming of Trump have? Brendan and Andrew take a new look at Raya Dunayevskaya’s 1944 polemic, “A Restatement of Some Fundamentals of Marxism Against Carter’s Vulgarization.” (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/a-restatement-of-some-fundamentals-of-marxism-against-carters-vulgarization-2) They explore its relevance to vulgarizations of Marxism that we confront today, which identify surface manifestations of capitalism as the system’s essence. The discussion also situates Dunayevskaya’s contribution within its political-theoretical context—a debate over whether Stalinist Russia was a bureaucratic collectivist or a state-capitalist society. Joseph Carter, a leading Workers Party theorist and proponent of the former view, argued that Russia could not be capitalist because it was not dominated by the “drive for the capitalists for profits,” which he took to be the driving force of capitalist accumulation. It was this claim, especially, that Dunayevskaya regarded as a vulgarization of Marxism. The episode’s current-events segment is on the Trumpites’ violent insurrection of January 6 to overturn the voters’ will and keep Trump in power, including the economic-populist spin on the coup put forward by David Sirota in Jacobin. Brendan interviews Andrew about his role in the development of the temporal single-system interpretation of Karl Marx’s value theory (TSSI). The interview focuses especially on Andrew’s personal experiences during the early years. In response to charges that Marx’s value theory and falling-rate-of-profit theory are logically invalid––leveled with increasing stridency in the late 1970s and early 1980s––Andrew and others independently discovered the TSSI and thereby showed that the logical errors attributed to Marx are actually created by his critics’ misinterpretations. In the episode’s current-events segment, the co-hosts discuss recent Salon pieces by Amanda Marcotte (https://www.salon.com/2020/11/25/trump-isnt-the-reason-we-cant-quit-trump--the-obsession-is-really-about-his-followers/) and Bob Cesca (https://www.salon.com/2020/11/24/enough-cowardice-democrats-must-forge-ahead-without-caring-what-the-trumpers-say/), on Trump’s implacable “base” that will continue to endanger us once he leaves office. * ~ * ~ * ~ * Radio Free Humanity is a podcast covering news, politics and philosophy from a Marxist-Humanist perspective. Brendan and Andrew welcome back (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/episode-19-spanish-edition-of-reclaiming-marxs-capital-interview-with-translator) Guillem Murcia López, a translator of the Spanish edition (https://www.elviejotopo.com/libro/reivindicando-el-capital-de-marx/) of Reclaiming Marx’s “Capital.” They discuss a forthcoming Spanish book collection that defends various dimensions of Marx’s work. The interview focuses on a chapter by Guillem that pushes back against the criticisms––in an influential book (https://www.akal.com/libro/el-orden-de-el-capital_34494/) by Spanish leftists Luis Alegre and Carlos Fernández Liria––of Marx’s falling-rate-of-profit theory and its place within his theory of economic crisis. The co-hosts discuss a Yale University colloquium talk, “Use-Value and Exchange-Value … and Value,” that Andrew delivered on October 7. Much of the discussion is about common misconceptions regarding the concepts and the relations among them. The co-hosts also discuss how the key opposition in Marx’s theory––between use-value and value––differs from the opposition between use-value and exchange-value that classical economists had focused on, and the significance of this difference for revolutionary theory and practice. And Brendan inquires about Andrew’s writing process. The video of the colloquium talk and the discussion that followed, the text of Andrew’s text, and the quotations he discussed are all available here (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/economics/video-klimans-yale-colloquium-on-use-value-and-exchange-value-and-value.html). The co-hosts and Anne Jaclard interview Dr. Pauline Muchina, author of “Please Aid Kenyan Children & Women Facing COVID-19, Floods, Locusts.” (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/international-news/please-aid-kenyan-children-women-facing-covid-19-floods-locust.html) Although Kenya is much poorer than the United States, and corruption remains rampant there, the death rate from COVID-19 in Kenya is only two percent of the US rate. Muchina accounts for this difference by discussing how the government, the public, and civil-society organizations in Kenya have responded to the pandemic. During the interview (recorded on Sept. 11), the participants also discuss Kenya’s other social and economic problems (debt, ethnic violence, land distribution, etc.) and the response to COVID-19 in neighboring African countries. Dr. Pauline Muchina is recognized as one of the world’s foremost female religious leaders. A native of Kenya’s Rift Valley Province and founder of the African Women & Youth Initiative (a design company that produces handicrafts for the global market), she currently serves as the American Friends Service Committee’s policy, education, and advocacy coordinator for Africa. Raya Dunayevskaya’s pamphlet, “American Civilization on Trial: Black Masses as Vanguard” (ACOT) (http://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/American-Civilization-on-Trial.pdf) argues that the pivotal moments of forward movement in the US have always been those moments when white working people took their lead from the black masses and coalesced with them. When some young Costa Rican progressives read Marxist-Humanist Initiative’s (MHI’s) editorial on the uprising following George Floyd’s murder (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/mhieditorial/us-explodes-with-protests-over-police-murder-of-george-floyd.html), which drew attention to Dunayevsakaya’s argument, they decided to read ACOT. They formed a study group, in which Anne Jaclard of MHI also participated. In this episode, which leads off Year 2 of Radio Free Humanity, Anne and the co-hosts interview three members of the study group—Arturo, Ellian, and Francisco. Brendan and Andrew continue their dialogue with Patrick Murray, the noted value-form theorist. (The value-form paradigm is a Marx-inspired strand of political economy that focuses on the market.) Patrick responds to Andrew’s arguments that Marx’s views on the origin of profit, intra-firm trade, and the quantity theory of money presuppose that commodities’ prices are determined before they are sold. And, as in Part 1 (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/episode-25-dialogue-with-patrick-murray-on-the-value-form-paradigm-part-1), much of the discussion focuses on whether, in Marx’s theory, a commodity’s value is only potential before it is sold; whether “co-constitutive” value-form theory collapses into a more extreme version; and whether Marx held that the magnitude of a commodity’s value is determined exclusively by the amount of labor that is socially necessary to produce it. Brendan and Andrew welcome Patrick Murray, the noted value-form theorist, onto the podcast. (The value-form paradigm is a Marx-inspired strand of political economy that focuses on the market.) Patrick responds to the recent, two-episode RFH discussion––“The Value-Form Paradigm vs. Marx’s ‘Capital’”––and enters into extended dialogue with the co-hosts. Much of the discussion focuses on whether, in Marx’s theory, a commodity’s value is only potential before it is sold; whether “co-constitutive” value-form theory collapses into a more extreme version in which actual values are ultimately determined only in exchange; and whether Marx held that the magnitude of a commodity’s value is determined exclusively by the amount of labor that is socially necessary to produce it. (Part 2 of this discussion will be released in the near future.) Brendan interviews Andrew about his With Sober Senses essay, “Not by Politics Alone: Thinking Through a Post-Capitalist Future.” (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/alternatives-to-capital/not-by-politics-alone-thinking-through-a-post-capitalist-future.html) They discuss what’s wrong with thinking that we can transcend capitalism simply through decentralized decision-making, or experimentation, or by putting different people, with different priorities, into power—and why it’s dangerous to put the whole burden of working out answers on the backs of the completely “new people” that revolution will supposedly create. The discussion calls attention to the economic problems that will need to be solved, such as the need for economic coordination, and why they will need to be solved in a different way than under capitalism. Brendan has Andrew explain why he rejects claims that the economic problems can be solved simply through income redistribution and overcoming the wastefulness of capitalism, and why, instead, a new liberatory mode of production needs to be worked out. The episode’s current-events segment focuses on the Trumpite drive to re-open US schools in the midst of the worsening COVID-19 pandemic. * ~ * ~ * ~ * Radio Free Humanity is a podcast covering news, politics and philosophy from a Marxist-Humanist perspective. Owing to the leading role of African-Americans, Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign imploded, and now an uprising for Black lives and against police violence has swept the US and the world. The co-hosts lay out the case that these events have delivered body blows to the theory and strategy of Jacobin magazine and others on the anti-neoliberal “left,” consigning them to the Jaco-dustbin of history. Brendan and Andrew argue that the recent upsurge constitutes mass repudiation of so-called “class-based”—economistic and color-blind––politics. They also argue that Sanders’ campaign imploded, not because of directives issued by Democratic Party bosses, but because voters, led by millions of Black “neoliberal shills,” wanted to end Democratic Party infighting in order to concentrate on removing Trump from office. And they discuss why it is so difficult for the anti-neoliberal “left” to learn from its repeated errors. Scottish computer scientist Paul Cockshott and his devotees have frequently portrayed Marx as a proponent of their own “labor theory of value.” But a recent essay by “RV,” (https://paulcockshott.wordpress.com/2020/05/17/guest-post-pauls-theory-and-marxs-theory-of-value-a-response/) a young Belgian activist and theorist, has exposed sharp differences between Cockshott’s theory and Marx’s actual theory. In this interview, RV explains to the co-hosts what the differences are, why they are important, and what impelled him to push back against the efforts to “force Marx, at all costs, to hold” Cockshott’s theory. They also discuss RV’s suggestion that we should let these two different theories contend, to “see which one better stands the test of reality,” how Cockshott is likely to respond to this suggestion, and why RV rejects the “empirical evidence” that supposedly supports Cockshott’s theory. In the current-events segment, the co-hosts discuss the calls to “defund the police” and proposals to reform policing in the US. Can policing indeed be reformed? The co-hosts interview Guillem Murcia López, a translator of the just-published Spanish edition (https://www.elviejotopo.com/libro/reivindicando-el-capital-de-marx/) of Andrew’s book Reclaiming Marx’s “Capital’: A Refutation of the Myth of Inconsistency (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/product/reclaiming-marxs-capital). They discuss the book’s political and intellectual relevance to Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries, the work involved in translating it and securing its publication in Spain, the phenomenon of academics building their careers around their own clever "corrections" of Marx, and more. Later in the interview, Brendan has Andrew explain how the temporal single-system interpretation of Marx’s value theory eliminates the theory’s alleged internal inconsistencies. In the current-events segment, the co-hosts discuss US Explodes with Protests over Police Murder of George Floyd (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/mhieditorial/us-explodes-with-protests-over-police-murder-of-george-floyd.html). The second half of a two-part interview on the “value-form paradigm”—a Marx-inspired and market-focused strand of political economy. Some years ago, the noted value-form theorist Patrick Murray (http://copejournal.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/patrick-murray-avoiding-bad-abstractions.pdf) responded to criticisms of the paradigm, leveled by Andrew (http://copejournal.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/andrew-kliman-on-capitalism_s-historical-specificity-and-price-determination.pdf) and others in a published symposium. (http://copejournal.com/critique-of-political-economy-vol-1/) In this episode––guided by Brendan’s questioning, and for the first time anywhere––Andrew continues his reply to Murray. The co-hosts discuss the source of profits, the quantity theory of money, and intra-firm trade. The discussion focuses on Andrew’s argument that the implications of the value-form paradigm contradict what Marx wrote about these issues, and on Murray’s attempts to explain away the apparent contradictions. Andrew explains why he finds Murray’s rebuttals to be unsuccessful. The segment includes references to chapter 3 (https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1867-c1/ch03.htm) and chapter 5 (https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1867-c1/ch05.htm) of Capital, volume 1, and to Marx’s draft chapter, “Results of the Direct Production Process.” (https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1864/economic/ch01.htm) In the current-events segment, the co-hosts respond to a recent “anti-neoliberal left” piece in Salon (https://www.salon.com/2020/05/09/you-dont-owe-joe-biden-anything-shaming-the-left-is-immoral--and-bad-politics/), in which Varsha Gandikota-Nellutla once again puts the political interests of “the left” ahead of the life-and-death struggle against Trumpist reaction. * ~ * ~ * ~ * Radio Free Humanity is a podcast covering news, politics and philosophy from a Marxist-Humanist perspective. Some years ago, Andrew participated in a published symposium (http://www.copejournal.com/critique-of-political-economy-vol-1/) on the “value-form paradigm”—a Marx-inspired and market-focused strand of political economy. Andrew (http://www.copejournal.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/andrew-kliman-on-capitalism_s-historical-specificity-and-price-determination.pdf) and others criticized the value-form paradigm, and the noted value-form theorist Patrick Murray (http://www.copejournal.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/patrick-murray-avoiding-bad-abstractions.pdf) responded to them. In this episode (and a future one), Andrew replies to Murray’s paper—for the first time anywhere. He and Brendan discuss differences between Marx and value-form theory regarding how commodities’ values are determined and whether capitalism is essentially a monetary system. They also engage in a broader dialogue on the general features of the value-form paradigm and its political implications; some of that discussion focuses on how Marx’s critique of Proudhonism is relevant to the value-form paradigm. The segment includes references to Marx’s Capital—chapter 1 (https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1867-c1/ch01.htm), chapter 2 (https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1867-c1/ch02.htm), and chapter 7 (https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1867-c1/ch07.htm) of volume 1, and chapter 1 of volume 2 (https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1885-c2/ch01.htm#4)—and to Paul A. Samuelson’s famous paper, “Understanding the Marxian Notion of Exploitation.” (https://www.jstor.org/stable/2721055) The current-events segment focuses again on the COVID-19 pandemic––especially Lysol Don’s latest epidemiological wisdom and Nazis storming Michigan’s Capitol building. Brendan interviews Andrew about his just-published With Sober Senses article, “Ceaseless Self-Movement: Dunayevskaya’s Interpretation of the Dialectic of the Absolute.” (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/philosophy-organization/ceaseless-self-movement-dunayevskayas-interpretation-of-the-dialectic-of-the-absolute.html) They discuss Hegel’s concept of “absolute negativity” and its importance to Marx’s and Dunayevskaya’s understanding of the process of revolutionary transformation. The discussion also highlights Dunayevskaya’s radical break from the tradition of "post-Marx Marxists," who held that the Hegelian dialectic culminates in a “synthesis,” a closed system that reconciles all contradiction. Brendan and Andrew then explore the claim that Dunayevskaya was misreading Hegel. In this episode’s current-events segment, the co-hosts discuss the economic impact of the Coronavirus Crisis. The co-hosts discuss the new prototype account for the distribution of “personal income” (https://www.bea.gov/data/special-topics/distribution-of-personal-income)—what share of income is obtained by the top 1%, the bottom 10%, and so on—unveiled earlier this month by the U.S. government agency that reports Gross Domestic Product statistics. Andrew thinks that this new “distributional national account” is likely to soon change the ways in which we discuss and think about income inequality; Brendan finds out why. They also discuss how the government’s conclusions, and its approach to measuring income inequality, differ from those of the “distributional national account” that Thomas Piketty, Emmanuel Saez, and Gabriel Zucman published a few years ago. How will Piketty and associates respond to the government’s new inequality database? And how will it affect redistributionist politics more generally? In the episode’s current-events segment, the co-hosts discuss Donald Trump’s dangerous peddling of a miracle cure for COVID-19 (the coronavirus) and whether the behavior of this “very stable genius” should be normalized as a valid alternative (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/coronavirus-anthony-fauci-social-distancing-us-italy-face-the-nation/) to what “deep state” experts say—a “hope layperson’s standpoint” rather than a “medical, scientific standpoint.” * ~ * ~ * ~ * Radio Free Humanity is a podcast covering news, politics and philosophy from a Marxist-Humanist perspective. They discuss differences between what the wealthy own and what working people own––the massive difference in the amount, but also how the “wealth” of the working class differs in kind from the capital owned by the wealthy. They also discuss why Emmanuel Saez and Gabriel Zucman (associates of Thomas Piketty) claim that inequality of wealth has skyrocketed while other researchers dispute this, and how and why politicians like Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren are making use of the Saez-Zucman data. Finally, they discuss Andrew’s view that no definitive conclusion can be drawn about the trend in wealth inequality, and what we should focus on in light of that. Also in this episode: Brendan and Andrew discuss “Is America Going Fascist?” (https://www.project-syndicate.org/commentary/trump-fascist-parallels-unhelpful-by-daron-acemoglu-2020-01), a recent article published by Daron Acemoglu, the well-known social-democratic economist at MIT. * ~ * ~ * ~ * Radio Free Humanity is a podcast covering news, politics and philosophy from a Marxist-Humanist perspective. The co-hosts interview Adam Plante, a young New York City education activist and Marxist-Humanist thinker, about his work on liberal democracy. With respect to the current moment, they discuss such topics as Plante’s view that the rise of Trump and other authoritarian strongmen is a threat specifically to socialist values; why the threat of Trumpism has been minimized; Plante’s contention that the actions of “leftists” who remain silent and or encourage Trump are literally suicidal; his thoughts on efforts by anti-neoliberal “leftists” to appeal to Trump’s base; and why Plante himself didn’t get swept up in soft-on-Trump “leftism.” Taking a more theoretical turn, the discussion then focuses on his argument that it is important that socialists both defend liberal democracy *and* fight to transcend it, and on his exploration of how Marx and Lenin theorized this issue. During the interview, Plante and the co-hosts refer to his presentations on liberal democracy at a 2019 conference sponsored by Historical Materialism and Jacobin (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/philosophy-organization/video-mhi-panel-at-jacobin-historical-materialism-conference-fighting-trumpism-and-left-accommodation.html) and last year’s Left Forum (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/philosophy-organization/video-mhi-panels-at-left-forum-conference-confronting-right-left-authoritarianism-confronting-trumpism.html). Brendan and Andrew discuss Karl Marx’s Critique of the Gotha Program (https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1875/gotha/), written in 1875 to oppose the merger of two German socialist parties—one of which was supposedly Marxist—and the program of the new united party. The discussion focuses largely on the Critique’s commentary on the nature of a communist society, the transformation from one mode of production to another (and the corresponding political transition period), and the challenges of achieving real equality and freedom within a newly created communist society. Brendan and Andrew also explore the significance of Marx’s critique for revolutionary organization–– especially his opposition to the merger, even though the newly united party had 25,000 members, because he regarded its Gotha Program as a theoretical regression. In their discussion, the co-hosts refer to two talks by Andrew, “The Transformation of Capitalism into Communism in the ‘Critique of the Gotha Program’” (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/alternatives-to-capital/what-must-be-changed-in-order-to-transcend-capitalism.html) and “The Incoherence of ‘Transitional Society’ as a Marxian Concept” (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/alternatives-to-capital/video-the-incoherence-of-transitional-society.html). Anne Jaclard, MHI’s organizational secretary and a veteran of the left ever since the 1960s, joins Brendan and Andrew to discuss and offer follow-up reflections on “Both Times as Tragedy: the Resurgence of Stalinism among Today’s ‘Left’ Youth,” (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/philosophy-organization/video-mhi-panels-at-left-forum-conference-confronting-right-left-authoritarianism-confronting-trumpism.html) a talk she gave at last year’s Left Forum. They discuss her surprise upon discovering this retrograde trend; former “Tankie” youth who are now disillusioned with Stalinism and have reached out to MHI; why it is important for socialists to oppose the resurgence of Stalinism; and how to combat it. The discussion grapples with why many youth find Stalinism appealing, and it explores additional factors underlying the trend, including the prevalence of “post-truth” thinking and of reactionary Third-Worldist “anti-imperialism” that serves as an entry point into Stalinism. During the interview, Anne and the co-hosts make reference to: (1) a Stalinist-dominated forum hosted by a student group (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/alternatives-to-capital/video-boots-riley-andrew-kliman-and-rick-wolff-debate-morality-of-stalinism-and-western-capitalism.html) that she attended and at which Andrew spoke (along with pro-Stalinist panelists Boots Riley and Rick Wolff), and (2) an article by Solarpunk Anarchist, “Why this Anarchist has Stopped Using the Word Communism (an overlong explanation).” (https://solarpunkanarchists.com/2018/01/22/why-this-anarchist-has-stopped-using-the-word-communism/) This episode’s current-events segment is devoted to a discussion of MHI’s new editorial statement, “Stop Trump’s Self-interested Drive to War Against Iran—and Against the American People.” (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/mhieditorial/editorial-stop-trumps-self-interested-drive-to-war-against-iran-and-against-the-american-people.html) * ~ * ~ * ~ * Radio Free Humanity is a podcast covering news, politics and philosophy from a Marxist-Humanist perspective. This is the long-promised second part of Brendan Cooney’s reflections on his political-theoretical evolution, in an interview conducted by his RFH co-host, Andrew Kliman. The discussion now turns mainly to Brendan’s critique of David Harvey’s theory of capitalist economic crisis. This concluding part of the interview should be listened to in conjunction with Part 1 (Episode 5) (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/episode-5-a-long-journey-from-marxists-to-marx-part-1), which mapped Brendan’s initial attraction to thinkers such as Harvey, his eventual disillusionment, and his journey to Marxist-Humanism. It focused especially on what Brendan has called “That 70’s Show”––the intellectual climate in which the work of such thinkers is rooted, in which “[a] false-dichotomy between ‘open-minded reinterpretations’ and ‘deterministic orthodoxy’ is too-often erected as a substitute for a real argument.” During the interview, reference is made to Andrew’s 2007 book, Reclaiming Marx’s “Capital” (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/product/reclaiming-marxs-capital), and to his contributions in his debate with Harvey, which is available in the MHI pamphlet, “Capitalism’s Crises: A Debate” (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/product/capitalisms-crises-a-debate), and also on our website as “Harvey versus Marx on Capitalism’s Crises” (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/economic-crisis/harvey-versus-marx-on-capitalisms-crises.html and https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/economic-crisis/harvey-vs-marx-on-crisis-klimans-rejoinder.html). Why was the Labour Party trounced so decisively in the December 12 parliamentary elections? What lessons should the pro-Corbyn left take away from the elections? Given that the strategy of much of the US left—including heavy emphasis on economic populism—is similar in striking ways to Labour’s, do the election results contain lessons for it as well? And how has the election affected the likelihood of the UK’s exit from the European Union? The co-hosts discuss these and other issues with Ravi Bali, a London-based housing activist and Marxist-Humanist. Their three-way dialogue is part of MHI’s effort to develop a Marxist-Humanist perspective on the political situation in the UK. Because development of that perspective is so important, this episode of Radio Free Humanity is devoted entirely to the three-way dialogue; there is no distinct short segment. The co-hosts interview Jade Saab, a Lebanese-Canadian Ph.D. student and author of “Uprising in Lebanon Aims to Replace Entire Political System,” published last month in With Sober Senses. Saab provides us with an update on the state of revolt since his article was published and engages in additional reflections on the uprising and its trajectory. Some of the issues discussed in the interview are: the roots and causes of the continuing uprising in Lebanon; the movement’s demands; the social composition of and differences within the movement; and the directions in which Lebanon might go if the revolt succeeds in overturning Lebanon’s current political system, based on power-sharing among religious sects. Is an emancipatory direction possible? In the current-events segment, the co-hosts discuss Sacha Baron Cohen’s forceful and viral critique of the “ideological imperialism” practiced by Mark Zuckerberg and the other “high-tech robber barons” who control social media. To follow events in Lebanon, Jade Saab recommends the following English-language electronic sources: The Daily Star (daily newspaper); Al-Nahar (daily newspaper with an English-language site); Executive-magazine (focuses on economic and business issues); English-language Instagram page of Megaphone (independent news outlet; provides daily updates on the uprising); The Lebanese Politics Podcast (a weekly podcast). * ~ * ~ * ~ * Radio Free Humanity is a podcast covering news, politics and philosophy from a Marxist-Humanist perspective. Brendan Cooney reflects on his political-theoretical evolution in this two-part interview, conducted by his RFH co-host, Andrew Kliman. They discuss the founding of his educational blog, Kapitalism101; Brendan’s initial attraction to thinkers such as David Harvey; his eventual disillusionment; and his journey to Marxist-Humanism. Part 1 of the interview focuses especially on what Brendan has called “That 70’s Show”––the intellectual climate in which the work of Harvey and others is rooted, in which “[a] false-dichotomy between ‘open-minded reinterpretations’ and ‘deterministic orthodoxy’ is too-often erected as a substitute for a real argument.” In Part 2 (which will be the main segment of Episode 6 of RFH) the interview turns mainly to Brendan’s critique of Harvey’s theory of capitalist economic crisis. In the current-events segment, Brendan and Andrew discuss whether Ambassador Gordon Sondland’s bombshell testimony before the House Intelligence Committee has made Trump’s removal from office more likely. The pamphlet mentioned in this podcast, “Capitalism’s Crises: A Debate”, is available at marxisthumanistinitiative.org/literature . * ~ * ~ * ~ * Radio Free Humanity is a podcast covering news, politics and philosophy from a Marxist-Humanist perspective. RFH co-host Brendan Cooney has written and spoken extensively about “left economic populism,” including the Green New Deal (GND). In this episode, Andrew interviews Brendan about the GND, both as environmental policy and as left-populist politics. The interview includes a discussion of Brendan’s provocative call for “More Green, Less New Deal,” Bernie Sanders’ GND plan, the lack of realism of GND proposals (and why that matters)—and much more. In this episode’s current-events segment, Brendan and Andrew discuss Paul Heideman’s recent Jacobin magazine article on “white working-class” Trump voters, which doesn’t quite promise that a Democratic Party committed to economic populism would win many of these voters back. * ~ * ~ * ~ * Radio Free Humanity is a podcast covering news, politics and philosophy from a Marxist-Humanist perspective. The United Kingdom is scheduled to leave the European Union at the end of this month. Are Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s strong-arm tactics going to succeed in making Brexit happen now, “deal or no deal”? And would that be good or bad—and for whom? Is Brexit moving UK politics in a more reactionary direction? These are among main questions we discuss with Chris Gilligan, a UK pro-migration activist and author of Northern Ireland and the Crisis of Anti-racism, in this episode of Radio Free Humanity. We also discuss claims by both the Remain and Leave camps that the other side is anti-democratic, objective forces acting on the Leave camp, and similarities between Johnson and Donald Trump. The following articles are cited during the interview: Chris Gilligan, “Defend Democracy. Stop the Coup”: Scottish protest against Boris Johnson’s suspension of parliament [no open], Hard Crackers, Aug. 2019. Marxist-Humanist Initiative, The Extraordinary Dangers of Trump and Trumpism, With Sober Senses Aug. 2016. In this episode’s current-events segment, Brendan and Andrew discuss the debate among voices on the left—Matt Taibbi, Adam Serwer, Andrew O’Herir, etc.—over the Ukrainegate whistleblower. * ~ * ~ * ~ * Radio Free Humanity is a podcast covering news, politics and philosophy from a Marxist-Humanist perspective. Radio Free Humanity: The Marxist-Humanist Podcast Ep. 2: Fighting White Nationalism In this episode of “Radio Free Humanity: The Marxist-Humanist Podcast,” we draw lessons from Karl Marx’s political writings to better understand the political orientation needed today to best fight the scourge of white nationalism. Andrew Kliman discusses some of his writings on this topic. You can read more about this in Part 5 of Marxist-Humanist Initiative’s 2018 document “Resisting Trumpist Reaction (and Left Accommodation)”: https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/mhieditorial/resisting-trumpist-reaction-and-left-accommodation-marxist-humanist-initiatives-perspectives-for-2018.html We also discuss a presentation that Andrew gave at the Left Forum in NYC on June 30th of 2019. Why did some Obama voters flip to Trump in 2016? Some have argued that Obama-Trump voters were motivated by anti-neoliberal sentiment and that therefore the left should pander to the interests of this “forgotten white working class.” However, evidence suggest that this claim of the anti-neoliberal Obama-Trump voter is not accurate. In this episode we get to the bottom of the mystery of the Obama-Trump voter. We will be discussing Andrew Kliman’s recent work analyzing Obama-Trump voters, contrasting his findings with the thinking of much of the mainstream left. In this episode we also take a moment to discuss some of the current issues surrounding Trump’s increasingly brutal war on immigrants and refugees. Today we bash through as best we can Chapter 9 of Andrew Kliman's marxist masterpiece "Reclaiming Marx's Capital". This is a probably the densest of all the chapters and tables abound like a mofo. I've included the initial tables as the artwork for this episode. Many of these tables are extremely similar and repeatedly display similar phenomena, so don't worry about them toooo much. All the tables can be accessed by clicking on the image links below: Tables 9.1 & 9.2 https://www.podomatic.com/ts/b5/3f/a6/tomobrien2004/0x0_13169411.jpg Tables 9.3 & 9.4 https://www.podomatic.com/ts/b5/3f/a6/tomobrien2004/0x0_13169413.jpg Tables 9.5 & 9.6 https://www.podomatic.com/ts/b5/3f/a6/tomobrien2004/0x0_13169414.jpg Tables 9.7 https://www.podomatic.com/ts/b5/3f/a6/tomobrien2004/0x0_13169412.jpg The panel this week consists of: Lexi - https://soundcloud.com/swampsidechats Derick - https://www.mixcloud.com/symptomatic-redness Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/FromAlpha2Omega

This week I am delighted to welcome back to the show Michael Roberts, author of the ‘Next Recession’ blog. We talk about the new reports out on the world economy from the IMF and the Bank of International Settlements, and how Ben Bernanke has come out as a closet Marxist after all these years. We also discuss the recent debate between David Harvey on one side, and Michael and Andrew Kliman on the other, about the relevance / reality of the law of the tendential fall in the rate of profit, and the politics behind it all. This week I am delighted to have Prof. Andrew Kliman back on the show to talk about his latest book - ‘The Failure of Capitalist Production’. The book is a brilliant example of empirical economic research, and shows us how relevant and insightful Marx’s work still is, in helping us understand the workings of our capitalist economy. We discuss the empirical evidence in the US that supports Marx's Tendential Fall in the Rate of Profit, the stagnation of capital accumulation, and the role of the IT revolution in the state of the economy. We also talk of the Great Depression, how it sowed the seeds for the renewal of the global economy, and what is behind the growing inequality we see around us today. This week we have part two of our talk with Professor Andrew Kliman of Pace University. This week we turn our thoughts to the dynamism of capitalism and the soviet experiment, the short-term asymmetric advantages of capitalism, and the revolutionary strategies of Karl Marx. Those in New York, can go to see the Professor debate about the crisis, with a panel of very eminent Marxists, indeed! This week we talk to Professor Andrew Kliman, about the current economic crisis, and what Karl Marx would make of it all. Professor Kliman, is a Professor of Economics at Pace University and author of several publications on Marxian economics, including the books Reclaiming Marx’s “Capital”, and ‘The Failure of Capitalist Production: Underlying Causes of the Great Recession’. We talk of Marx's labour theory of value, the falling rate of profit, production for productions sake, and what Marx would think about the insights of the post-keynesian, Hyman Minsky. The Professor is a leading proponent of the Temporal Single System Interpretation of Marx's labor theory, which defends Marx’s cconomic theories against various claims of its inconsistency from other economists. I’m currently reading Das Kapital myself, so it’s a real treat to hear what one of the worlds foremost Marxists has to say about the current economic situation.
