Author and communications expert Tim Ward joins co-hosts Andrew Kliman and Gabriel Donnelly to discuss what it means to stand up for truth in politics. The discussants considered how the Harris campaign handled the issue of post-truth politics, how Trump will continue to erode truth, and cognitive biases that help fuel the power of post-truth lies. Much of the discussion considered how a positive movement for truth, in the face of post-truth's encroachments, would actually look like and what such a movement would prioritize. To that end, the Pro-Truth Pledge was considered. Tim Ward is the coauthor with Gleb Tsipursky of Pro Truth: A Practical Plan for Putting Truth Back Into Politics, formerly sat on the executive board of the Pro-Truth Pledge, and blogs at Medium. The Pro-Truth Pledge can be read and signed at its website. Plus current-events segment: the co-hosts discuss the recent protests in Georgia after the cessation of talks for the country to join the European Union. Radio Free Humanity is co-hosted by Gabriel Donnelly and Andrew Kliman, and sponsored by Marxist-Humanist Initiative (https://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/ ).

There is no end in sight to the amount of misinformation and disinformation that we are currently being exposed to. With a contentious US presidential election and the seasonal spike in COVID-19 pandemic cases, that pollution is on the rise, and information that used to be politically neutral is now being politicized and weaponized. These and other topics, including the Pro-Truth Pledge movement, are discussed with guest, Tim Ward, co- author of the book: Pro Truth: a Practical Plan for Putting Truth Back into Politics.
Tim Ward, author/journalist and a board member of ProTruthPledge.org, discusses putting the truth back into our politics.
In an age of social media and intense political passions, the truth can become very difficult to unravel from the web of lies and disinformation spread deliberately, and widely, by so many people for so many reasons. We may feel helpless against that huge world of tweets and posts - but we're not.
I interview Tim Ward, co-author (along with Gleb Tsipursky) of Pro Truth: A Practical Plan for Putting Truth Back Into Politics. We talk about the Pro-Truth Pledge, a tool to enable politicians, government officials, public personalities, and even regular citizens in sharing, honoring, and encouraging the truth as a central foundation for political discourse. For more about the Pro-Truth Movement, visit ProTruthPledge.org. For more about Tim and his work visit ChangemakersBooks.com. To buy a copy of Pro Truth for yourself, click here. Plus: The newly conservative-controlled Supreme Court has issued "injunctive relief" against an executive order (issued by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo) that sought to restrict the number of attendees at religious services in certain zones identified as pandemic hotspots. In Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn v. Cuomo, the Court agreed with the church's argument that restrictions applying uniquely to religious meetings violate the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment. (Nevermind, as pointed out by Chief Justice John Roberts in his dissent, that Cuomo had already altered his executive order so that the zone restrictions no longer apply.) Justice Stephen Breyer also dissented, insisting that governors should be given considerable latitude to act during times of public emergency. In any case, this ruling is surely a harbinger of how a SCOTUS now dominated by Trump appointees will rule favorably on behalf of religious conservatives. Theme music courtesy of Body Found. WIth the release of a single video this week, artist Donald Glover (Childish Gambino) created a frenzy that has the entire country discussing what is America really. The death of iconic scholar and theologian James Cone also reignites the argument of the need for a black liberation theology in the midst of our current socio-political atmosphere. Are we expecting our political and spiritual leaders to live in truth or be complicit with the highly charged American social climate and what role does the black church play in shifting the culture? Audio recording of January 10 presentation to North Columbus Lions Club by Gary Monti, the presenter. GOAL: Create a business-oriented presentation for the PTPNOTES: 1. working to "own" my presentation, consistent with my style and work-life. 2. Generate a PTP presentation biased towards business life. 3. work political application in tangentially after establishing rapport with the audience. 4. lead audience towards understanding that the PTP is about life, not just one particular segment. 5. Chance to work with Linda S, another PTP volunteer. She speaks some in the latter 1//3 of the recording. Please listen and comment. Use any part for your presentation in your own presentations.TECHNICAL: 1. recorded with Voice Record in my iPhone7 Plus using the built in mic. Very solid app! 2. wanted to see how the simplest setup that was stable would work. Might add lavalier mic but was concerned if people saw recording equipment it might turn them off. 3. recorded at 33kHz (odd setting, not sure how that happened), edited, and exported as a WAV file at 48kHz. 4. did some editing to boost the voices that were at-a-distance from the iPhone.5. feedback was provided stating the presentation was not only excellent it was entertaining. 6. Also, 7 out of 16 people took the pledge!Let me know what you think. If you are thinking of talking with groups, please feel free to use anything from the presentation that would work for you. Also, if you want to discuss, send Gary an email at gary.monti@ctrchg.com

It took us two days into the New Year, but it finally happened - TRUMP ESCALATED NUCLEAR TENSIONS AGAIN! Oh, and famed senator and sometimes songwriter Orrin Hatch announced his retirement after forty years in the senate and zero years on the billboard top 100. We talk with Ken Whitaker about how to be better media consumers. We take a look at how we can lower our expectations about things getting better - yet maintain that wonderful, optimistic glow about us! Ryan and Courtney also panel.
On our pre-holidays show we welcome Jelena back after a bit of a hiatus, then Pontus corrects himself before we turn our skeptical ears towards fellow skeptics Dr. Gleb Tsipursky and David Fitzgerald who talk about the Pro-Truth Pledge and why Jesus probably never existed, respectively. We then finish with possibly the most relevant song about Christmas, written and performed by George Hrab. Hope you'll enjoy the show. Happy holidays, everyone!

Tired of living in a “post-truth” political world where lies become “alternative facts” and social media facilitates the spreading of nonsense faster than ever before? Worried about the way we often find ourselves, and others, in walled-off political and cultural silos, only hearing things that reinforce our pre-existing assumptions? Concerned about the way our brains seem almost wired for irrationality? You’re not alone. And luckily, things are not hopeless! On today's episode, I'll speak with Dr. Gleb Tsipursky, a professor at Ohio State University who specializes in the science of irrational decision making, and is committed to fostering fact-based inquiry and rationality in our daily and political lives. As co-founder of the “Pro-Truth Pledge,” Tsipursky is pushing for a renewed commitment to accuracy, fact-checking and honesty in our daily discourse, whether on social media or in politics. And as Tsipursky explains, there are strategies we can employ to foster the search for truth, short-circuit our own tendencies to irrational thinking, and encourage the same in others. This episode also features my commentary on the “post-truth” claims of conservatives and Republicans, to the effect that “they are the party of civil rights and anti-racism,” in which I explain the historical deception behind such a claim.

A conversation between Dr. Gleb Tsipursky and two hosts from "Fermenting Opinions" podcast, one from the right and another from the left, about the Pro-Truth Pledge. Fermenting Opinions is a podcast hosted by David Popiden and James McVeigh. David works in special education and leans left politically. James is an attorney who leans right and identifies as a Libertarian. It is the mission of Fermenting Opinions to promote civil discourse in political debate in an attempt to bridge the political divide that is currently plaguing the United States. To promote this mission, Fermenting Opinions utilizes a traditional interview format that presents questions to guests from both sides of the political aisle. In essence, as David tells us at the start of every podcast, Fermenting Opinions is the podcast in search of a more palatable political ferment. This is the audio recording of the October Ohio Pro-Truth Pledge Strategy Meeting. We focused on preparing for the upcoming election and in general strategic considerations for the PTP in Ohio.
Mid-Atlantic - conversations about US, UK and world politics
I’m joined by Gleb Tsipursky, Co-Founder, of the Pro-Truth Pledge. In a week that has seen that Russia used hundreds of fake accounts to tweet about Brexit, we look at the psychology around Fake news and demonising legitimate media scrutiny. Are we are facing a systematic danger for our democracy with Alabama front-runner Senate candidate Roy Moore calling The Washington Post “fake news” after the newspaper published a thorough investigative report of his sexual improprieties. He forms just part of a broader pattern of prominent public figures using the label of “fake news” to denounce mainstream media stories they do not like. On this episode of Fermenting Opinions, we talk with Gleb Tsipursky, a proponent of the Pro-Truth Pledge. In doing so, we seek to understand more about discerning fact from fiction or opinion in sources we read daily online, and we seek to establish a groundwork for doing just that.
Professor Gleb Tsipursky joins us on this episode to walk us through an endeavor that he and his wife started called the ProTruthPledge.org. It's a system of 12 behaviors that, when followed, promote truthfulness and rational thinking. We also read a letter in response to the Jon Sarkin episode from an audience member who is, technically, in a coma.
Recently the headlines have been full of news about POTUS Trump and his less than eloquent and empathetic conversation with the widow of a fallen soldier. POTUS Trump has taken time to undermine any efforts of the truth coming to light regarding his comments. While this is nothing new for POTUS Trump, it does beg to question when will those Christian leaders who support him speak up and demand truth from him. Also in the news, political commentator Bill O'Reilly made remarks regarding him being mad at God for not protecting him from his sexual predatory behavior. You can read more about that here: https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/oreilly-im-mad-at-god-over-allegations-of-sexual-harassment/ar-AAtXStu?li=BBmkt5R&ocid=spartandhp. We're all aware of the problem of fake news, but why do we fall for it? When we read a post on Facebook that sounds a little questionable, why don't we check into it further? You better believe there's some psychology going on here. In this episode I interview Dr. Gleb Tsipursky of Ohio State university. He's been studying this in great depth. We'll apply theories from Daniel Kahenmann (Thinking Fast and Slow) as well as examine the "backfire effect", emotional reasoning and emotional contagion to better understand what's going on. In the upcoming second part of this interview we'll look at what Gleb is up to with his Pro Truth Pledge where more psychology is being applied to help us all stop spreading fake news.

Cass Midgley and Bob Pondillo interview Gleb Tsipursky. He's an Assistant Professor in the History Department at Ohio State. He earned a bachelors from NYU, a masters from Harvard, and a PhD from UNC Chapel Hill. He specializes in behavioral science and is keen on how authoritarian regimes take over countries. He was raised in a Jewish household in Russia til he was 10 , but never personally adopted Judaism and is today non-religious. As a part of the Rational Politics project, Gleb co-founded Intentional Insights (dot org) and the Pro-Truth Pledge (dot org). A current tragedy of the commons we're all experiencing today is our eroding confidence in differentiating truth from lies. Gleb is inviting everyone to take the Pro-Truth Pledge. It provides a tool that motivates all who take it to share accurate information and avoid sharing misinformation. As you've probably figured out, this episode is highly political and if you're a Trump supporter, this is not gonna be a fun ride for you. Gleb paints a much scarier picture of things than I previously assessed. Up until this conversation, I had deemed Trump an idiot. And appealing to idiots. Gleb says otherwise. Gleb even says that Trump is emotionally intelligent, that he knows exactly what he's doing, and knows what to say and what persona to present in order to get elected and to influence people. This is a game-changer. Now keep in mind, Gleb is a Russian immigrant, he has a PhD in History with an emphasis on behavioral science. This is not a conspiracy theorist. This isn't a talking head punding shit out of his ass. This is research based observations, first hand accounts, and historical patterns and examples from other countries and eras. I know this is a bit doomsdayish, but Chris Hedges concurs with Gleb's perspective as voiced in a recent article titled, "The End of the Republic." The following is an excerpt from that piece: "Trump and our decaying empire have ominous historical precedents. If the deep state replaces Trump, whose ineptitude and imbecility are embarrassing to the empire, that action will not restore our democracy any more than replacing Commodus restored democracy in Rome. Our republic is dead.Societies that once were open and had democratic traditions are easy prey for the enemies of democracy. These demagogues pay deference to the patriotic ideals, rituals, practices and forms of the old democratic political system while dismantling it. When the Roman Emperor Augustus—he referred to himself as the “first citizen”—neutered the republic, he was careful to maintain the form of the old republic. Lenin and the Bolsheviks did the same when they seized and crushed the autonomous soviets. Even the Nazis and the Stalinists insisted they ruled democratic states. Thomas Paine wrote that despotic government is a fungus that grows out of a corrupt civil society. This is what happened to these older democracies. It is what happened to us." After this conversation, Bob and I both took the Pro-Truth Pledge. I hope you benefit from our talk with Gleb Tsipursky. We taped these conversations on April 18th, 2017. We interview people you don’t know, about a subject no one wants to talk about. We hope to encourage people in the process of deconstructing their faith and help curb the loneliness that accompanies it. It is time for another installment of the podcast that you love to hate, The Podunk Polymath Podcast! In the pre-ramble I talk briefly about the Predators success in the playoffs and also a concert O attended this past weekend. I then go into how some douchepickles decided to bring up #reasoncongate from a couple of years ago in order to attempt to invalidate any arguments I made on a totally unrelated subject. I put a video up on the Facebook page and on YouTube to thoroughly explain (once again!) for my newer friends who perhaps didn't know so that they can make their own determination on how they look at me. Hopefully people can see that I regret what happened and I am doing everything I can to be a better person. On the palaver this week I talk to Gleb Tsipursky, professor at Ohio State and creator of the the Pro-Truth Pledge. We talk about his insights regarding how people who have strong disagreements, especially on political issues, can find a way to communicate while still staying true to their personal ethics. In a world where the election of Trump has polarized people more than ever, this is a valuable resource for trying to bridge that gap, or at least making the attempt. I thought it was a fascinating conversation, and I hope you agree. Music by Dot Dot Dash, cdbaby.com/cd/dotdotdash

Help fight lies in politics, and other life areas, by taking the Pro-Truth Pledge (PTP) https://www.protruthpledge.org/ and sharing about it with other folks you know. The PTP was created by a group of social scientists led by Dr. Gleb Tsipursky: http://glebtsipursky.com/about/ The purpose of the PTP is to change the incentive structure for public figures, establishing rewards for truth-oriented activities and penalties for sharing misinformation. It targets politicians and other public figures, with the intent of committing them to spreading accurate information as informed by behavioral science research. Another goal is to get ordinary citizens to take the pledge, and advocate for others and especially public figures to sign the pledge, as well as monitor them for violations. The pledge clearly defines misinformation, for example as going against reputable fact-checking sites or the scientific consensus. Public figures get substantial rewards for signing the pledge, in the form of positive media and public recognition. However, there are substantial penalties for public figures who share misinformation. If they are caught doing so by PTP advocates, and refuse to retract their statements, they get penalized with significant negative media and public pressure. You can read more about how this would work in the FAQ section of the PTP website: https://www.protruthpledge.org/So take the pledge, become an advocate, and spread the word! Please express your thoughts on the podcast through leaving comments, clicking Like if you like it, and if you do like it, Follow us! Jesse and Brittany interview Gleb Tsipursky, a professor from The Ohio State University. Gleb runs an organization called Intentional Insights, which “unites reason-oriented people to popularize science-based strategies for wise decision-making and rational thinking in politics and other life areas.” He is passionate about truth in politics and information shared via the Internet. We discuss... This podcast comes from a rally for the launch of the Pro-Truth Pledge (PTP). The goal of this project is to get thought leaders to commit publicly to orienting toward spreading accurate information, reward those who do so, and penalize those who do not. A secondary goal is to get ordinary citizens to take the pledge, to decrease them sharing misinformation on social media, to provide pressure on thought leaders to sign the pledge, and to have Pro-Truth citizen-advocates both promote the PTP and monitor thought leaders for violations of the PTP. We see the PTP as a game-changer that would use behavioral science-based insights about rewards and punishments to create much better incentives for thought leaders, as well as ordinary citizens, to share accurate information and avoid sharing misinformation.
