Recorded in a basement in Whitby, Ontario, Ready Golf is the ultimate destination for the amateur golfer. Join hosts Eric Acosta and Brent Jones as they cover the biggest headlines from the tours, interview guests, and chase their ultimate goal of breaking 80.
It has been a few weeks since our last episode so we thought we'd get together to catch up. In this week's episode we wrap up our own personal golf seasons and discuss what went well, what didn't, and what we're hoping for next year. We also sit down and do a fly-by wrap up of both the PGA and LPGA Tours' fall events. Finally, the other big headline that has been dominating golf circles for the past few weeks has been the announcement of Greg Norman as CEO of the newly formed LIV (“Live?” “forty-five” “L-I-V?”) Golf Investments that will be funding a 10-tournament series within the Asian Tour, of which Norman will serve as commissioner. The rival tour is not without controversy as it is fully backed by Saudi investors and aims to lure away some top talent from the PGA and European Tours. We discuss what we know so far (not much) and speculate who may make the jump and discuss some larger implications. Since our offseason schedule will be a bit more sporadic, make sure you follow us at any/all of the below to make sure you don't miss out on any new episodes. After crushing defeat in 2018, Team USA stormed back with a historic 19-9 victory at the Ryder Cup, the most lopsided win of the modern era. In this episode we recap all of the action, discuss not only what went wrong for Team Europe, but what Team USA did so well at Whistling Straights on their way to victory. There is a lot of hype around this fresh, young core that will likely become the base of Team USA for many years to come. But what will future teams actually look like? Will USA continue to roll out these 12 guys and expect to keep winning? How big of an overhaul is needed for Europe? We get into some standouts and disappointments for each side and predict who we may be seeing again in Rome when the Cup is once again up for grabs in 2023. Hot off the heels of a great Solheim Cup earlier this month, it is time for another one of the most exciting events in golf - the Ryder Cup! This week we'll watch as the teams from the United States and Europe square off at the renowned Whistling Straits in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Team USA suffered a crushing defeat the last time the event was played in 2018, falling 17.5-10.5 to the Europeans. They are coming out this time with a fresh, younger looking team that features 7 out of the top 10 golfers in the world as they look to return the favour. Meanwhile, team Europe will feature the current best player on the planet, Jon Rahm, as well as matchplay legends including Rory McIlroy, Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood and Sergio Garcia. Though they'll enter the week as underdogs, they have relished in this position historically. The Ryder Cup kicks off on Friday, with the final singles matches taking place on Sunday, September 26th. Catch all the action this weekend and then check back with us for our recap next week! Until then, keep up with us at: Instagram - @readygolfpod Twitter - @readygolfpod Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/readygolfpod/ Or drop us a line at info@readygolf.ca
We're a day late this week, but that's a good thing since there is a TON of news to cover! We kick things off talking all about Team Europe's surprise upset of Team USA at the Solheim Cup. Europe defended the cup as well as won in the US for the first time since 2013. The team featured standout performances from Matilda Castren, superstar in the making Leona Macguire, and the clutch Emily Kristine Pedersen, who came out victorious in the anchor match with her boyfriend caddying for the opponent. Another big tournament going on this weekend was the Tour Championship, which was won by Patrick Cantlay. Though we have more than a few qualms with the format of the entire playoffs, this was a great performance by Cantlay and resulted in a very deserving winner. Now that the Tour season is (finally) behind us, we can shift our attention to the next big event: The Ryder Cup. On Wednesday morning, captain Steve Stricker announced his 6 captain's picks to round out Team USA. We discuss who is in and who is out as well as the overall makeup of this younger, more exciting roster who will look to avenge their 2018 loss to Team Europe when the tournament kicks off in two weeks at Whistling Straits. Check back in the coming weeks for more Ryder Cup talk, but until then, keep up with us at: Instagram - @readygolfpod Twitter - @readygolfpod Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/readygolfpod/ Or drop us a line at info@readygolf.ca
One of the most exciting weeks in golf is upon us - it's Solheim Cup week! This weekend we will be treated to a matchplay spectacular as Team Europe looks to defend their victory over Team USA in 2019. The teams will travel to the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio, for a combination of team and singles matches that make for incredible drama and some must-see moments. This episode we break down the course, the teams, and some potential partners we can expect to see battling it out. We also relive the glory of Suzann Pettersen's clinching putt in 2019 and set up what's at stake for both teams. Before getting into all of that, we also recap Patrick Cantlay's win at the BMW Championship and set the stage for the final leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. John also regales us with his stories from beautiful PEI where he not only spent some time as a tourist, but got to play in the pro-am tournament of the Mackenzie Tour's PEI Open at Dundarave Golf Course. Check back next week as we break down all of the action from Toledo. Until then, keep up with all things Ready Golf at: Instagram - @readygolfpod Twitter - @readygolfpod Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/readygolfpod/ Or drop us a line at info@readygolf.ca
The final putt had barely fallen, but we're here recapping Tony Finau's big win at the Northern Trust, defeating Cam Smith in the first playoff hole on Monday night. This is Finau's second PGA Tour victory, his first since the 2016 Puerto Rico Open. With the win, Finau launches into first place in the standings after the first leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. We also set the stage for who is out and who is in at the BMW Championship as well as who is on the bubble and needs a big week to get into the Tour Championship. Taking place across the pond, veteran Anna Nordqvist came out on top at the AIG Women's Open at historic Carnoustie Golf Links, taking home the final major on the 2021 calendar. The win was her 9th career LPGA Tour victory and 3rd major, which also ended her winless drought dating back to the 2017 Evian Championship. Last big headline of the week, the captains have made their picks and the teams are finalized for the upcoming Solheim Cup. We briefly run through the lineups for both Team USA and Team Europe, but check back next week for the full, in-depth preview of the event, which will take place Sep. 4-6 at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. Until then, keep up with all things Ready Golf at: Instagram - @readygolfpod Twitter - @readygolfpod Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/readygolfpod/ Or drop us a line at info@readygolf.ca
The whole gang is back together this week as we wrap up the end of the PGA Tour regular season and get ready for the Northern Trust, the first leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. We talk about who is in, who's out, and what are the implications on tour status. Keeping the notes short and sweet this week since this is a pretty loose episode - enjoy!
To a lot of us, the Olympic golf tournaments brought a lot more excitement than anticipated. Though the viewing hours in our part of the world weren't ideal, there were a few great storylines to follow and stacked podium in both the men's and women's tournaments. This episode we begin by recapping all of the action from Tokyo including: Full rundown of the men's and women's podiums A Cinderella story more than 3 years in the making for the nation of Slovakia The chaos of a 7-man playoff for bronze Another display of dominance from the best female golfer in the world Potential team scenarios and adjusted leaderboards should the event have went with a different format As the Olympics wind down, so does the PGA Tour's regular season. This week's Wyndahm Championship represents the final opportunity to crack the top 125 and qualify for the FedEx Cup Playoffs (and the excessive bonus money that comes with it). We spend some time talking about which players are at risk of slipping out of the top 125 as well as a few big names who need big weeks since they're currently on the outside looking in. As always, keep up with all things Ready Golf at: Instagram - @readygolfpod Twitter - @readygolfpod Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/readygolfpod/ Or drop us a line at info@readygolf.ca
Light week for headlines, so we dedicate the majority of this episode to breaking down what to expect in Tokyo as team Canada competes for their spot on the podium at the Olympics. Canada will be represented by two golfers on both the men's and women's tournaments - Corey Conners, Mackenzie Hughes, Brooke Henderson and Alena Sharp. We discuss what we know about the historic Kasumigaseki Country Club, whose East course will play host to both tournaments. We also discuss the makeup of the field, how golfers qualified, and which countries look strongest heading into the event. If you're the night owl type, the men's tournament kicks off on Wednesday, July 28th at 6:30pm EST. The women's event is the following week, on Wednesday, August 1st at 6:30pm EST. Both events will be streamed at CBC.ca.
While we were unfortunately unable to get Collin on the show this week, we were more than happy to discuss his spectacular victory at the Open Championship in Sandwich, England. Morikawa put on a masterclass in ball striking, playing a near-perfect, bogey-free final round to win the 4th and final men's major of the year at Royal St. George's Golf Course. Morikawa is barely two years into his pro career, but he has already cemented himself into the history books and joins some elite company by winning his second major before the age of 25. In addition to Morikawa, we also take some time to discuss: what could have been for Jordan Spieth, who is now officially “back,” and how links golf really suits his game Louis Oosthuizen coming up short once again A fantastic week for Canadians with both Mackenzie Hughes and Corey Conners finishing in the top 20 Bryson's latest hissy fit, this time directed at the folks at Cobra Golf Some other noteworthy performances, including Phil, Will Zalatoris and Jon Rahm If you're worried about the upcoming major draught, then fear not! There are still two majors left on the Ladies' Tour, the first of which is this week at the Evian Championship. World #2 Jin Young Ko looks to defend her title from 2019 after the event was cancelled last year. Check back next week as we gear up for the Olympics and get into the field, the course, and potential podium we'll see out in Tokyo. Until then, keep up with all things Ready Golf at: Instagram - @readygolfpod Twitter - @readygolfpod Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/readygolfpod/ Or drop us a line at info@readygolf.ca
As the title suggests, we spend most of this week's episode previewing the highly-anticipated Open Championship, back after being cancelled in 2020. As per usual, Brent takes us through the historic course, some design elements that make it unique, as well as some notable holes to watch out for. While the weather forecast for the weekend isn't looking too harsh, this course is a great example of true links golf in the most traditional sense and should be a real test for the field. We do things a bit differently with this preview when it comes to breaking down the field. Rather than devoting too much time on the big names who you'll surely know plenty about, John takes us a bit deeper down the field list and helps identify some great value picks for the week. We also take a look at players who have seen success in their careers playing the Open and find a few stats that will lead to success at St. George's. Before getting into the preview, we also cover a few headlines: John's most recent golf excursion Glen Abbey is saved! Recap of the Tours, including some great results for Canadians at the US Senior Open PIP moments of the week Check back next week as we recap all the action from the UK and see who takes home the Claret Jug. With Brent away at the cottage this week, Eric and John recap the action from the Atlanta Athletic Club where Nelly Korda put on a dominant performance to bring home her first major victory at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship. Nelly has been on absolute fire this year, also winning the previous week at the Meijer LPGA Classic. Her final score of -19 was only two strokes shy of tying the record score relative to par at a women's major championship. We also discuss a valiant effort put forth by Lizette Salas who was unable to match Nelly's play, but also separated herself from the pack, finishing in second place, 6 strokes clear of the third place finisher. And what would any major championship be without some controversy? The one knock against Salas' play was her pace, as she routinely took well over a minute to take her shot. While a slow play penalty was assessed in this tournament, it actually wasn't against Salas. After a great finish in Atlanta, we turn to a somewhat less exciting finish up in Cromwell, Connecticut where The Travelers Championship took EIGHT playoff holes to determine a winner. While this should has set up to be one of the most thrilling finishes, it ultimately fell completely flat as viewers watched Harris English (the eventual winner) and Kramer Hickok trade pars for over two hours. We wrap up the episode talking about the final qualifiers for the women's Olympic golf event and John takes us through his PIP moment of the week, which, unsurprisingly, is not PIP related at all. Jam-packed episode this week! We start things off by recapping yet another fantastic major as Jon Rahm takes down a loaded leaderboard and emerges victorious as the 121st US Open champion. We discuss Rahm's clutch play down the stretch as well as some other highlights from an exciting final round. The week also had a ton of other headlines worth discussing, including: Nelly Korda getting her second win of the season at the Meijer Classic Olympic qualifiers have been set for Tokyo A special Father's Day edition of This Week in PIP Finally, we wrap up by discussing the next major on the LPGA schedule, the KPMG Women's PGA Championship. This week we skip the headlines and get straight to the good stuff: our 2021 preview of the US Open! This week we see golf's biggest tournament return to Torrey Pines in beautiful La Jolla, California. Last time the event was hosted at this venue, Tiger woods came out victorious completing his 3rd career grand slam, defeating Rocco Mediate in sudden death holes on a broken leg. Here's to hoping that something equally as historic will go down this week! In our standard preview format, we open up by talking about the course and some differences we may see from the USGA's setup vs. the PGA Tour event that takes place here every year. Brent also takes us through some challenging stretches and some ongoing themes and challenges that the course will present all week long. Then we break down some of the field and discuss who we'll be watching out for this week. John does a deep dive into some key statistics that will lead to success at Torrey and we debate which type of player should come out one top: someone who plays Torrey Pines well, or someone who plays well at the US Open. Finally, we wrap up the episode with some picks for who we think will take home the Championship Trophy and the largest payout of the year. Check back next week for our recap and in the meantime, keep up with all things Ready Golf at: Instagram - @readygolfpod Twitter - @readygolfpod Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/readygolfpod/ Or drop us a line at info@readygolf.ca
Another exciting weekend of golf and we're here to talk about it! First, we kick off the episode with a recap of the 76th US Women's Open at The Olympic Club which was won by 19-year-old Yuka Saso. Saso held off Nasa Hataoka on the third playoff hole to capture her first major victory. We discuss her impressive round as well as a complete meltdown from Lexi Thompson who saw a 5 stroke lead evaporate and the title slip through her fingers. We also talk about a couple of surging amateurs who found themselves in the top 20, including 17-year-old Megha Ganne, whose name we'll be hearing plenty more of in the coming years. At the same time, a ton of excitement was going down at Jack's Place as Patrick Cantlay took home his second victory at The Memorial, also in a playoff beating out Collin Morikawa. Although the two put on a great display down the stretch, the victory was certainly overshadowed by some controversy surrounding Jon Rahm as he was forced to withdraw from the event while holding a 6-stroke lead after the third round due to a positive COVID-19 test. Check back next week as we do a full preview of the 121st US Open at Torrey Pines. Thank you for joining us once again for our DIAMOND episode of Ready Golf! We are happy to have arrived at #75 and even more grateful to everyone who has been along for the ride! This week we devote most of our time to a preview of the US Women's Open taking place at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, California. The course is steeped in history and is sure to provide an incredible challenge for the world's best golfers this week. Our preview covers some details of the course and what makes its design so challenging, some notables that we'll be watching out for, as well as a rundown of a few of the amateurs in the field who could give some of the more seasoned Tour veterans a run for their money. Before the preview we also do a rundown of this week's headlines, including: Mollie Marcoux Samaan named as the new LPGA Tour commissioner Results from the Bank of Hope LPGA Match Play and a controversial decision by Shanshang Feng to concede the 3rd place match Jason Kokrak's 2nd victory of the year at the Charles Schwab Challenge A new Match coming this summer Roundup of the week in PIP As always, keep up with all things Ready Golf at: Instagram - @readygolfpod Twitter - @readygolfpod Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/readygolfpod/ Or drop us a line at info@readygolf.ca
What an incredibly fun weekend of golf that was! On this week’s episode we discuss all of the excitement around Phil Mickelson’s historic victory at the PGA Championship. The win represents his 6th major victory, which puts him in some pretty elite company. It also earns him a place in the history books as he sets the new record for the oldest major champion. Most impressive was the way Phil was consistently the best player in the field and pulled off some very creative golf shots on his way to taming an incredibly difficult course setup at the Ocean Course. Of course as we discuss Phil, we need to give plenty of attention to Brooks Koepka and his inability to show up when it mattered most on Sunday. But Brooks wasn’t alone; several other big names were unable to capitalize down on Kiawah Island, including DJ and JT, who both missed the cut. Such an exciting event will be difficult to follow up, but we’ll be back next week with our diamond episode - #75! Until then, keep up with all things ready golf at: Instagram - @readygolfpod Twitter - @readygolfpod
This week’s episode is all about setting up the year’s second major, the PGA Championship taking place at The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort, South Carolina. We get into details on the course’s history, some unique design elements and discuss the challenges the field will be facing this week in what Golf Digest has named the most difficult course in America. We also break down the players and debate which style of game should see some success out there. We also make our standard head/heart/wildcard picks for who we think will take home the coveted Wannamaker Trophy. But before getting into the PGA Championship we also (quickly) take you through the headlines of the week, which include: A feel-good victory at the British Masters for journeyman Richard Bland A *shrug* victory for K.H. Lee at the AT&T Byron Nelson Another botched handling of a prestigious women’s event by the NCAA The Ocean Course is set up to be the longest course in Major tournament history measuring at 7,876 yards and we hope you all enjoy every moment of it! Check back with us next week for our recap.
It’s a mish-mash of headlines this week where we break down: Rory’s victory at the Wells Fargo Championship Team USA’s tight victory over Great Britain & Ireland at the Walker Cup A victory on home turf for Ariya Jutanugarn at the Honda LPGA Thailand Updates on the PGL/Super League situation We also discuss some PIP highlights from the week and make our picks for the upcoming AT&T Byron Nelson, which is being held at a new TPC course with probably the worst name on the PGA Tour rota. It’s another loose one this week, folks, as the golf content machine wasn’t firing on all cylinders this week. As usual, we break down the few headlines we did have, including Mike Weir taking home his first career Champions Tour victory at the Insperity Invitational. We also discuss Sam Burns’ win at the Valspar, LPGA results from Shanghai, and Rickie’s special invitation to the upcoming PGA Championship. As we head into May we are also approaching the delayed start to golf season here in Ontario. Brent and John have been putting in some work this offseason to improve their games, so we discuss what they’ve been doing and how they can implement it on the course. Books discussed were “Dave Pelz’s Putting Bible,” “Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible,” and “Harvey Penick’s Little Red Book,” (all highly recommended by Ready Golf!). Check back next week as we break down the results from a loaded field at the Wells Fargo Championship, recap some Walker Cup action, and set the stage for the following week’s PGA Championship As always, keep up with all things Ready Golf at: Instagram - @readygolfpod Twitter - @readygolfpod Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/readygolfpod/ YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdRQUuPahG9lFq9DpdNqyDg Or drop us a line at info@readygolf.ca

In other Canadian news, after an incredible year on the Korn Ferry Tour, Taylor Pendrith has officially locked up his Tour card for the 2022 season. Lots to get to this week as Brent and John take the reins and recap another exciting week of golf at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Lots of talk about winner Bryson DeChambeau as well as a fantastic tournament from Canadian Corey Conners. They also run down some other notable performances from Jordan Spieth and Lee Westwood, among others. After the recap, we get to an interview with Mackenzie Knowles, owner of Ada’s Golf Boutique, which just launched this week. The shop is a curated collection of women’s golf apparel that aims to address a major gap in the marketplace for women who typically need to deal with expensive prices and very limited selection at the major retailers. To learn more about Mack’s project and browse the spring collection, visit goshopada.com. You can also check them out on Facebook or Instagram (@goshopada) for updates. Finally, turning the calendar to March signifies the arrival of the PGA Tour’s crown jewel, THE PLAYERS (all caps) Championship. This also marks the one year anniversary of the Tour’s initial shutdown and the official arrival of the COVID-19 Pandemic to the world of golf in North America. Brent and John break down the stacked field and give us their picks for who will take home the massive $2.7 million winner’s cheque. After getting a bit distracted last week by Patrick Reed’s most recent cheating incident, we are back once again to give our rundown of new product launches and gear announcements for 2021. Though this is very top-line, we cover some of the major releases from the big club manufacturers, including TaylorMade, Titleist, Callaway and Cobra Golf. If you’re considering upgrading your bag this year, this is a great place to start! We also spend the first half of the episode discussing Brook’s win at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, whether or not we can consider Jordan Spieth “back,” as well as some initial reactions to the joint Distance Insights Report from the USGA and R&A. With further proof that the universe doesn’t care about karma, Patrick Reed has taken home his 9th PGA Tour victory this week at the Farmers Insurance Open. However, the win doesn’t come without controversy. Reed benefitted from a highly-scrutinized move during his 3rd round in which he took relief from an “embedded” lie. This week, the guys break down the incident itself and discuss its implications for the tour and how incidents like this can be avoided in the future. After a lengthy conversation, we talk about the upcoming Waste Management Phoenix Open and make our picks for the week. With only 5,000 spectators allowed on the grounds each day, the event will look significantly different than it has in the past; most notably on its famed Hole #16 that typically sees a raucous crowd of 20,000 on that hole alone. If you need to brush off all of the Patrick Reed-induced negativity, check out this video featuring Gary Woodland and Amy Bockerstette from the 2019 WM Open. Yes, it’s unadulterated PGA Tour propaganda and yes, you will probably see it multiple times over the next few days (especially if Gary is in contention). But good luck not smiling anyway. After taking the week off we have lots to get to this week as we recap the official end to the 2019-20 PGA TOUR season, the Tour Championship. We also spend some time previewing the upcoming ANA Inspiration, the second major of the year on the LPGA Tour schedule. While it’s usually played in early spring, this year’s iteration of the event will bring unprecedented heat and some tough conditions that will prove to be a great challenge for the world’s elite golfers. After 6 consecutive top-10 finishes, the new-look Bryson DeChambeau finally gets it done this week, bringing home his first win of the season at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Bryson absolutely dominated the field with his driver, averaging over 350 yards off the tee and setting multiple records along the way to his 6th career victory on Tour. We’ve talked a lot about Bryson in recent weeks and the massive transformation he’s gone through in pursuit of increased club speed and distance. After putting on over 40 pounds of mass since the fall, It’s truly incredible to see things actually working the way he had it planned.
