In this first installment of our four-part conversation with two-time major champion Jane Geddes, FORE the Good of the Game co-hosts Mike Gonzalez and Bruce Devlin take listeners on a journey back to Jane's unlikely beginnings in golf—and what a story it is.Born and raised on Long Island, Jane Geddes never set foot on a golf course until the age of 15. A move to Summerville, South Carolina left her feeling like an outsider—until a chance introduction to the game changed her life forever. With no prior experience, no clubs of her own, and no country club pedigree, Jane's golf journey began with a single seven-iron and a generous teaching pro, Derek Hardy, who saw something special in her swing from day one.Jane reflects with honesty and humor on the cultural shock of moving to the South, the loneliness of high school, and how golf became her unexpected refuge. From shag bags and Walmart clubs to developing her game on a neighborhood driving range, this is a raw and inspiring look at how talent, curiosity, and a bit of fate launched one of the great careers in women's golf. You'll hear how she went from a complete unknown to walking onto the Florida State team, and how pivotal influences—including Derek Hardy, Dave Pelz, Jim McLean, and Dr. Bob Rotella—shaped her game and mindset. This episode offers a rare glimpse into the humble and heartfelt beginnings of a future major champion. If he doesn't, he runs the risk of losing credibility in the golf world. This will be interesting. While this new research is hardly comprehensive and is a far cry from being strategically helpful, it does add to the body of work, which is great. This wedge play technique changed my golf life. I was able to turn an absolute fear of 30, 50, 60 yard wedge shots into a strength of my game. These shots require a special approach that brings distance control and consistent impact with the golf ball every time. I'm super passionate about this part of the game, and I think this lesson is one that's going to help every single player out there. In this episode, I start things out with some data to help convince you this is an area of the game that you really need to focus on. Dave Pelz figured out some important things using the scientific process - that these shots are the biggest correlation to money earned on the PGA Tour and they require their own kind of technique.  For me personally, I absolutely feared these shots for a very long time - to the point of nearly quitting golf. Once I figured a way to make consistent contact and control the distance of these shots, wedge play became the hallmark of my game.  The golf swing has many different sources of power - weight shift, body turn, coil, release of the club, hand action, etc. To control distance, we want to soften things up and limit our power to a single source. When we do this well, we're able to calibrate distance and make some great things happen around the greens.  I'll fill you in on setup and swing technique to get you started in the right direction.  • Narrow stance • Noodle arms • Your unique rhythm  • Rotate without coil • Maintain soft pressure throughout • Ball comes off like a marshmallow • Consistent impact every time This technique is the absolute foundation of so many things we're going to talk about around the greens - pitching, bunker play, and even chipping.  Listen in and get in touch if you've got questions.  --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/golf-essentials/message

631: Phil Mickleson’s coach, Dave Pelz, may be the most recognized short game instructor in golf today. Part of his mastery comes from being a physicist who loves golf, the other is that he possesses one of the most spectacular practice areas in his backyard that you’ll ever see.  In Part 1 of our conversation with Dave, we discuss how having a backyard practice area has improved both his game and his family life. When he was on Golf Smarter last April (episode 586), Dave introduced Host Fred Greene to an outdoor practice product called SynLawn. As we record this episode Fred’s new 5 hole putting green/chipping area installed by SynLawn Bay Area is being completed. Up next week, Dave returns to provide us with drills, games, and advice on how to best utilize your home practice to impact your scores on the course. This week on the Golf Smarter Academy, Dustin from Ohio has done a lot to improve his swing, but can't seem to stop his head from moving back and forward during his swing. Also, his backswing is just too long. Can our Academy Professor, Tony Manzoni help? What do you think? Let us help you! The Dave Pelz you see in 2017 isn’t all that different from the Dave Pelz you would have seen in 1957. The golf fanatic was then playing on scholarship at Indiana University, and competing against Jack Nicklaus, no less, so to see where he is today—as a world renowned short game instructor—comes without surprise. The astonishing part is how he got there, because shortly after enrolling at Indiana, and losing to Nicklaus on a number of occasions, he realized he wasn’t Tour ready. His ascension to the top of the short game world—which includes advising Phil Mickelson, one of the greatest short game players of all-time—begins at NASA, and has to do mainly with physics, his major at IU. As you can tell by listening, he’s pretty good at telling the story. Topics include: 2:25 — Playing junior/college golf against Jack Nicklaus 7:30 — How a college golfer ended up working at NASA 11:10 — His introduction of the 60-degree wedge on Tour 21:45 — Phil Mickelson’s greatest short game shot 25:20 — His annual work with Mickelson 31:50 — His new green-reading project

586 Dave Pelz could be the most sought after and successful short game golf coach on the planet. But he’s so much more! Dave’s a scientist, researcher, author, entrepreneur, club designer, short game guru, and a dedicated family man. In our conversation that goes longer than an hour, Dave gives us a glimpse into his personal history that starts with being a frustrated college golfer at Indiana University who was repeatedly beat by Jack Nicklaus. He then moved on to NASA working as a scientist/researcher/data analyst for the Goddard Space Center. But his love of golf never left his blood, so he took a year off to start a business that ended as a total disaster.  He provides a lot more about his history, and of course provides some short game and practice advice. He also shares his prediction for this year’s Masters. Keep your eyes/ears open for his newest Kickstarter book/video project on Green Reading. The crowdsource funding program will run for 60 days starting May 8, 2016. Help support the project and get your package earlier and for less than the regular public.
