Ep.K198: Why Are There More Successful Older Golfers Today?   From the 18th fairway in the final group of the British Open in 2009, Tom Watson, the five-time Open champion, hit a shot that flew right at the pin. For a moment, it looked like Watson, then age 59, would win the tournament for a record sixth time and become the oldest player to win a major championship. A firm bounce sent the ball off the back of the green, and Watson needed three more shots to get the ball into the hole. That dropped him into a tie for first. In the four-hole playoff, he ran out of gas and lost by six shots. A decade ago, the idea of an older golfer contending in, let alone winning, a major championship was something few considered. That was still the time when most golfers petered out in their mid-40s and kicked around the golf world before having a brief resurgence on the Champions Tour when they turned 50. Leading these middle-age mavericks is Phil Mickelson, 51, won the PGA Championship in May. He beat Brooks Koepka, a four-time major winner, and Louis Oosthuizen, the 2010 British Open champion, who are both in their 30s. “All these guys have taken a new approach,” said Dave Phillips, co-founder of the Titleist Performance Institute, which focuses on golf and fitness. “There's a lot of money out there. They realize they can still compete with the younger guys, but they need to spend more time on their body and what they fuel their body with.” Phillips said what Mickelson and the others were doing provided lessons for older golfers. “It's not strength, but the recovery and the downtime that matter,” he said. “It's letting your body recover. Everyone wants to get fitter, stronger, faster. They're upset when they don't see the results. But what they're doing is fatiguing to the body more so than a round of golf.” Crucial for older players? Maintain leg strength, Phillips said, and that means walk, don't ride, when you play golf. It is experience, for sure, but that is a double-edged sword: With age, players are more knowledgeable about the nuances of the game and have, in theory, a better psychological understanding of what to do. But they have also failed to do that in similar moments in the past. “The reason we're going longer is we have the financial security to go longer,” he said “We also have the sports science to reinvent ourselves.” Source article: https://udn.com/news/story/6904/5656437

A week after a major is always a tough one, as you never know how the market leaders are going to react after a tough few days in the biggest of tests, but Matt Wallace will look to move on as he headlines the Cazoo Open, presented by Gareth Bale (LOL), while the trio of Dustin Johnson and Louis Oosthuizen will look to put Royal St George's disappointments behind them and go well at the 3M Open. Tom and Jason unsurprisingly look elsewhere in both events, and try and find some value in players that can take on the favourites this week.  As ever we highly recommend you check out Tour-Tips.com for all the relevant statistics required to make informed selections each week. Just when you think the sports world will start to slow down a bit, it always delivers another level of excitement. Here to bring you up to speed on all that's happening, Episode #205 promises to heat up your speakers and earbuds. On deck: (6:00) The Sports Dead Zone, Pt. 2 hasn't arrived during this different sports year as the NBA is set to crown a champion tomorrow night possibly with the Milwaukee Bucks, flexing their experience, toughness and grit that they've accumulated over the past two plus postseasons and exhibited in Games 4 & 5 of the Finals. I'll discuss the potential legacy games for both Giannis Antetekoumpo & Chris Paul as Game 6 looms. Do the Suns keep their season alive and push the series to a deciding Game 7? In other news, there is a new coach in Washington with a familiar name, the play in tournament will be back in 2021-22 and Kawhi Leonard's secretive diagnosis has been revealed. (29:16) MLB has one of the most bizarre weeks in recent memory. From Pete Alonso's arrogance at the Home Run Derby, to a ho-hum All-Star Game, the Yankees, including Aaron Judge coming down with COVID, a wild weekend in Pittsburgh for the Mets with two major injuries to dissect, a shooting outside of Nationals Park and the Brewers take back the NL Central (well, sort of). I'll go through the divisions as we're just 12 days from the Trade Deadline. (47:12) Collin Morikawa wins his second major tournament in 10 months by coming from behind to beat Louis Oosthuizen and Jordan Spieth to win the British Open at Sandwich Bay. At 24, how bright is his future? Also, how did the rest of the field fair? (i.e. Bryson Dechambeau, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, etc.) (57:15) I have to apologize to #1 women's tennis player and Wimbledon winner Ash Barty. (58:12) The newest team in the NHL, the Seattle Kraken will have two drafts to look forward to this week as they'll build their roster through the Expansion Draft (Wednesday) and the Entry Draft (Friday & Saturday). Will they become a similar version to the Vegas Golden Knights of four years ago? Plus, a big trade for Edmonton that could pay dividends to a young Connor McDavid and their franchise next year. (1:04:57) No players have opted out (as of yet) of the upcoming season in the NFL as training camps open next week. And let's add another story to the already legendary status of a one Thomas Edward Brady! (1:07:32) The Olympics open up on Friday in the midst of COVID as it's affecting Tokyo. Will anyone watch? Does anyone care? (1:12:45) Of course, my Hero and Zero of the Week.
