The 1955 U.S. Open Golf Championship was supposed to be the crowning achievement to one of the greatest careers in the history of sports. Golf enthusiasts and sports fans all thought the U.S. Open, staged at San Francisco's Olympic Club, was a virtual lock for Ben Hogan to win. In fact, Hogan almost proved everyone to be right. The Hawk calculated what he needed to shoot to win on this "terror" of a course. And, he wasn't that far off. Hogan found himself 5-strokes back after the first round having shot a 2-over 72. He then started working his way up the leaderboard by shooting a 3-over 73 in round 2, a 2-over 72 in round 3 and an even-par 70 in the final round, five strokes better then all but one other golfer. No one ever considered journeyman Jack Fleck to contend. But, he too worked a little magic that weekend. After a first round 76, Fleck fired a 1-under 69 in the second round, followed that with a 5-over 75 in the third round and then he masterfully conquered the course by shooting a 3-under 67 in the final round and found himself in a tie with Hogan. The two would face each other in an 18-hole playoff the next day. Fleck was a huge fan of Hogan. In fact, he was the first to carry Ben Hogan golf clubs in his bag. He was would follow Hogan around the course to see how Ben played. He even wore the same type of hat, sweater and slacks as Ben. Fleck had never won an official TOUR event. And now he was going to face his idol over the course of 18 holes for a date with infamy. Incredibly, he did it. He outlasted Hogan in the playoff to win the 1955 U.S. Open and enter his name into golf lore. On this episode of Sports' Forgotten Heroes, Neil Sagebiel who wrote the book "The Longest Shot," joins the podcast to talk about the career of Jack Fleck and that one magical weekend in June of 1955 when Davey took down Goliath.

Welcome back to the Brain Booster for another week. Thank you for supporting the show, it really is appreciated. From time to time people question me about my seemingly indifferent approach to ‘working' on the golf swing. And that all I want people to do is ‘just play' This couldn't be further from the truth as I have always believed that the key to great golf is a blend of swing efficiency coupled with a great mindset. I do not believe in endlessly dissecting your swing and obsessing over positions but I do believe in having a good understanding of what creates your SHOTS. It was with that in mind I wanted to welcome back a great coach from the USA and a big supporter of the podcast Kelvin Kelley to discuss how best to make your swing more efficient. We discuss: How the set up is the very best place to start making your swing more efficient. Why you can set up in a way to help you create a powerful impact position Feeling a dynamic impact position with an impact bag Hitting angles at address How to turn the switch to performance on the golf course Becoming a ‘shot detective' out on the golf course Letting the shot create the swing How your physiology affects your performance How your lifestyle dramatically affects your performance Some really solid and interesting concepts from a top coach Kelvin is a Class A PGA golf professional in San Francisco, California. Today we welcome back onto the Brain Booster my good friend Vin Harris. The previous shows with Vin and the discussions around mindfulness have been so well received and I believe this one will be no exception. We get the chance to look at chaos, uncertainty and impermanence in your game and in the game of life. We seem to be living now in such a chaotic world. Nothing seems to be solid and reliable and the old models seem inappropriate. Uncertain economics, worrying international conflict. So many changes which can be really disturbing. Our thoughts can become so unsettled. We can end up in a ‘sea of thought' and this type of thinking can easily follow us out onto the golf course When our mind is so busy it becomes increasingly difficult to be PRESENT to the next shot in front of you. What can we do about it? How can we begin to have a different relationship to our thinking so we can NOTICE our thinking as opposed to being lost in the endless flow of images and sensations. Vin provides us with a CALM and SAFE voice of reason to help us navigate the uncertainty. When we make peace with the uncertainty things seem to settle down We look again at GRATITUDE and how this idea is not just a flaky concept but an essential element of great performance How to care without worrying How to get out of the way of ourselves How to basically be a better friend to ourselves both on and off the course. A wonderful session with a man who has trained with some of the foremost Buddhist and Meditation teachers over the past 40 years or so As always you will gain so much listening to the wise words of Vin Harris Vin Harris was involved in writing and editing “Mindful Heroes – stories of journeys that changed lives”. The authors share their inspiring stories of how mindfulness has been applied to a variety of setting across Education, Health, Business, Sport, Creative Arts and Community work.  The book includes Vin's chapter “Its Golf…but not as we know it: Golf as a mindfulness practice and a metaphor for life” and an introduction to the Sport section by Karl. Vin has offered to send listeners to the Brain Booster Podcast the eBook versions of these two chapters.  To claim your free chapters or if you want to learn more about Mindfulness for Golfers you can contact Vin by email vinharris.hkt@gmail.com For details of an annual golf week that Vin helps to facilitate go to Home - Fairway to Heaven (spiritualgolf.com) To become a CERTIFIED MIND FACTOR coach Come and join us either in Manchester or at the Olympic Club in San Fransisco Go to www.themindfactor.com

As a senior in 2019 he earned Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) Division I First Team All-America honors. The inaugural Bucknell water polo player to earn First Team All-America recognition, the laurel marked his fourth All-America nod after previously garnering Second Team honors in 2018, Honorable Mention in 2017 and Third Team honors in 2016. A four-time Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) Player of the Year honoree and the 2019 MAWPC Championship Player of the Tournament, Joksimovic proved an instrumental part in helping Bucknell win the title to advance to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championships for just the second time since 1985. In the Bucknell record books, Joksimovic finished his Bucknell career second in points (714), second in goals (527), fifth in assists (187), first in steals (317), and tenth in ejections drawn (124). Hello Fellow Golfist,Yesterday and today I was able to watch the best golf coverage by any network of 2021.   At the time of this recording the 2021 US Women's Open was being held at The Lake Course at The Olympic Club in San Francisco California.  I love The Olympic Club.  I have been there 4 total times in my life and it has been an amazing experience each time.  The course is just below Daly City in South San Francisco California and it is a part of the 4 corners of world class golf all surrounding Lake Merced.  Other courses include, TPC Harding Park which held the 2020 PGA last year and I found out this week that the next LPGA stop will be at Lake Merced Country Club next week, and then there is the California Golf Club that I have never seen before.  Anyway I wanted to thank Rolex for sponsoring the uninterrupted NBC coverage of this years US Women's Open because it has been glorious to watch a golf tournament with no commercials.   It was like it was 1987 again when Scott Simpson won the US Open at The Olympic Club on ABC Sports.  I was a spectator in 1993 when the PGA Tour held its Tour Championship that was on ABC Sports with Brent Musberger and Peter Jacobsen in late October opposite the 49ers on the other side of town.  Jim Gallagher Jr won the event over Greg Norman who collapsed at the end.  I also was a spectator at the 2012 US Open when Webb Simpson won the US Open after Jim Furyk collapsed.  I went into a bit of detail remembering what the 2012 US Open experience was like.  I look forward to watching the end of this US Women's Open tournament.  Don't forget to check out my latest product review videos on my YouTube channel The Knackered Golfist where I talk about the new Srixon Q Star Tour Red and Yellow DIVIDE golf ball.  https://youtu.be/OD6DAull7DMhttps://youtu.be/1yrh-LSvFVQThanks for listening to The Knackered Golfist Podcast. #uswomensopen#theknackeredgolfistpodcast#theknackeredgolfist#theolympicclub#srixonqstartourdivide

We are happy to be speaking to Panos Tzivanidis, the Director of Corporate Events and Services for the International Olympic Committee (IOC), today.  Panos has a lot to share about the power of networking, time, talent, technology, the Tokyo Olympic Games, and what is going on in the events industry. We hope you will enjoy our conversation!  Panos Tzivanidis's bio: Panos Tzivanidis is the Director of Corporate Events & Services for IOC, the International Olympic Committee, widely known for the Organisation of the Olympic Games, with headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland. Panos and his team are responsible for a large variety of activities, including all events organized by the IOC worldwide, as well as all accommodation needs, travel, accreditation for the Olympic family for all events around the Games period, as well as the Olympic Club; the main and exclusive Hospitality area for the Olympic family, Head of States, their Top VIP & Dignitaries guests. Under his responsibility is also Facilities Management and general services for all IOC premises.  Panos has direct responsibility and decision power for a large variety of activities including all strategic marketing events organized by the International Olympic Committee worldwide. Reporting for specific projects, directly to the President and Director-General of the IOC, is accountable for a budget of over USD 50M and a team of 88 permanent staff and over 100 contractors during major events.  Panos is responsible for the strategic planning, all operational aspects, content coordination as well as all events during and around the Olympic Games period. His role often brings him to the negotiation table with local authorities and government representatives to create a win-win situation for all parties involved.  He joined IOC in June 2013 after having spent two years as the Head of Conferences for UEFA, widely known for the organization of the Champions League, Europa League, and National teams EURO soccer tournaments, and previously having spent 11 years with SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication), and organizer of Sibos, the world's premier annual financial services event. Panos was the Head of Events at Sibos, dealing with all organizational aspects and strategic planning of the exhibition and the conference in all five continents that the Sibos event was organized.  His profession has allowed him to travel to all corners of the world becoming an expert on international relations, having represented the companies he worked for and negotiated with the highest authorities in many different countries and cultures. Panos is a great believer in the power of networking amongst the people in the events/conference & marketing industry worldwide. He is also a great believer in team spirit and its positive impact on success.  Personal motto: Those who speak, don't know, and those who know, don't speak. Some background From a young age, Panos enjoyed being in the hospitality industry, being among people, and socializing. His parents sent him to a hotel management school in Switzerland. Later, when he started working after his military service, he went into the Banqueting Department of a hotel, where he became involved with events. He realized that that was what he wanted to do, and since then, he has never left that path. The world of sports While living in Belgium, Panos got headhunted back to Switzerland and into UEFA. It was a challenge for him because he knew nothing about sporting events at the time. Panos was fortunate enough to organize Champions League Finals and European Cups and spend time with the big players. Joining the IOC and the Olympic Movement Being Greek, Panos felt that it was a tremendous opportunity for the IOC (International Olympic Committee) and the Olympic Movement.  The mix of time, talent, and technology Panos believes that if you miss one of what he calls “The Three T's” (time, talent, and technology), nothing is happening. He feels that those three T's are vital in all industries. Time is valuable Time is valuable. Over the last few years, every individual from the participants to the organizers, started realizing that the time that they invest is valuable and will give them a return.  Time well spent Panos wanted people to leave his events feeling fulfilled and knowing that their time was well-spent. That has not changed since COVID.  Panos Tzivanidis's thoughts on technology  Panos believes that technology is moving so fast that the events industry will always have followers. For him, technology is not about following. It is about sometimes taking small risks. Talent Talent in the events industry has always been a challenge. Panos feels that is because there is a problem with defining the events industry and marketing it. Young people want to know what the events industry is all about and why they should get into it. Empowering the younger generation Panos feels that the events industry is not empowering the younger generation because they may not take the initiative and do things differently. Things are changing Things are changing, so we need to adapt. The President of the IOC uses the motto of “change, or be changed.” Do things differently People should have the right to think and do things differently. Management, and team leaders, should also be trusted to live up to what they say. A misconception There is a misconception that the younger generations are constantly behind screens and do not care about human interaction. Panos believes that they are capable of communicating in a way that the older generations cannot understand.  Hybrid The world will never be completely virtual in years to come. It will be hybrid. Panos thinks that many good things will come out of hybrid. Ecology and the planet In the future, new ways will have to be found for airlines to fuel themselves. Like biofuels, for example. What Panos Tzivanidis has to say about networking Networking will become easier, according to Panos. New technology will allow for the possibility for people to interact better and in more spontaneous ways. Emotions People need emotions. With events and big groups of people, Panos has not yet found a way to create the same emotions as those created in one-to-one conversations. That is why he thinks that physical networking will always be most important. The museum The museum had to close due to the coronavirus. When the coronavirus measures became more relaxed, however, and the museum reopened, Panos could see that many people were eager and willing to visit, even with the coronavirus restrictions in place. He attributes that to the emotions that the museum evokes. The museum had the same number of visitors as in any normal year recently, even with the restaurants and outlets closed due to COVID-19. Tokyo They have been pumping up everything to do with Tokyo in the museum.  Tokyo Olympics Many people from all over the world are busy gearing up for the Tokyo Olympics, even though it will be different because of COVID-19. The priority is the safety and wellbeing of the athletes because the Olympic Games are essentially about the athletes. In this episode, I talk briefly about the coverage for the 2020 Tour Championship.  But, I predominantly reminisce about the 1993 Tour Championship that I attended back on Saturday's 3rd round.  Jim Gallagher Jr won the tournament but it meant the ultimate collapse of Greg Norman on the final 2 holes of the event.  I remember the ambiance, the blimp, the balata balls, the persimmon woods, and the 348 yard 18th hole at the Lake Course at The Olympic Club.  And my love affair with forged bladed 1 irons.  Thanks for listening.
