Lizette Salas is an LPGA Tour golfer. She's a US Solheim Cup team member. But her identity encapsulates so much more. During the height of the pandemic, when the LPGA Tour was shut down, Lizette was forced to ask herself big, difficult questions about how golf made her feel. For six months, she went through a process the Shrinks call "burning down the forest to see what grows back." Lizette worked hard on developing the vocabulary to describe how she was feeling to the people in her circle. It took time, but eventually she made it back to the golf course, ready to start competing again. Lizette is thoughtful, kind, insightful, deeply funny, and much, much more than a professional golfer. In this session: broadening your identity, hit-and-giggles, don't touch my clubs. After Seiya Suzuki popped out, Hoerner’s liner into center drove in Contreras from second for a 3-2 lead. Hoerner finished with three hits. Rowan Wick pitched a scoreless inning for the win, and David Robertson got three outs for his 13th save. Tigers at Guardians, PPD – Tigers-Guardians game postponed by rain The finale of the four-game series between the Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Guardians on Sunday has been postponed by rain. The Guardians have had nine home games postponed by inclement weather and have played seven doubleheaders at Progressive Field. The scheduled 1:40 p.m. game was called off about two hours before the first pitch. The game will be made up as part of a traditional doubleheader Aug. 15. The Tigers optioned rookie first baseman Spencer Torkelson, who batted .197 in 83 games, to Triple-A Toledo after the postponement was announced. Alonso is trying to become the first player to win the derby three straight times. He tops the majors with 78 RBIs and has hit 24 home runs this season for the NL East-leading New York Mets. Alonso takes on Atlanta’s Ronald Acuña Jr. in the first round. The other pairings are Schwarber vs. Pujols, Juan Soto vs. José Ramírez and Julio Rodríguez vs. Corey Seager. MLB – Sons of All-Stars Holliday, Jones go 1-2 in MLB draft Jackson Holliday and Druw Jones, sons of All-Stars Matt and Andruw, were taken by Baltimore and Arizona with the first two picks in baseball’s amateur draft. Holliday, whose father is a former batting champion Matt Holliday, was chosen first by Baltimore over Jones in somewhat of a surprise. Justin Crawford, a son of four-time All-Star Carl Crawford, was taken by Philadelphia at No. 17. Texas used the third pick on Kumar Rocker, a big right-hander who failed to sign with the New York Mets after being selected 10th overall last year. With the 7th pick, the Chicago Cubs took RHP Cade Horton from the University of Okalhoma.  The Tigers chose Texas Tech 2B Jac e Jung.  The White Sox at 26 chose LHP Noah Schultz from Oswego East High School in Illinois. WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Yesterday Seattle Storm 81, Indiana Fever 65 Storm 81, Fever 65 – Stewart hit 4 3s, scores 25 to help Storm beat Fever 81-65 Breanna Stewart scored 25 points, Jewell Loyd and Tina Charles added 15 points apiece and the Seattle Storm beat Indiana 81-65 to extend the Fever’s losing streak to nine games. Seattle (17-8) is a half-game behind the Las Vegas Aces (18-7) and two games back of the WNBA-leading and defending-champion Chicago Sky (19-6). NaLyssa Smith led Indiana (5-22) with 15 points and nine rebounds. Golf – British Open – Smith rallies to beat McIlroy at British Open for 1st major Cameron Smith is the British Open champion not many saw coming. The Australian and his magical putter stormed from behind at St. Andrews to overcome Rory McIlroy and win the British Open for his first major. Smith made five straight birdies to start the back nine. He saved par on the dangerous Road Hole at the 17th. And he finished with two putts from 80 feet for birdie and a 64. It’s the lowest final round ever by a winner at St. Andrews, and Smith matched the major championship score to par at 20 under. Cameron Young finished second. Golf – LPGA – Jennifer Kupcho, Lizette Salas win LPGA Tour team event Jennifer Kupcho and Lizette Salas won the Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational on Saturday, closing with a 9-under 61 in best-ball play for a five-stroke victory. The U.S. Solheim Cup partners finished at 26-under 254 at Midland Country Club. They opened Wednesday with a 68 in alternate shot, shot a best-ball 61 on Thursday and took a four-stroke lead Friday with an alternate-shot 64. Kupcho won for the third time this year and in her career, while Salas won her second tour title. Kupcho won the major Chevron Championship in early April in the California desert and the Meijer LPGA Classic last month in Belmont, Michigan. Salas also won the 2014 Kingsmill Championship. Matilda Castren and Kelly Tan were second after a 62. NASCAR – Bell crashes NASCAR playoff field with win at New Hampshire Christopher Bell crashed the NASCAR playoffs, winning Sunday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway to become the 14th Cup Series winner this season. Bell mastered the track where he won Xfinity Series races in 2018, 2019 and 2021, holding off Chase Elliott, last week’s winner at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Bell is the 14th driver to earn a spot in the 16-driver playoff field. With six races left in the regular season, it leaves open the possibility that more than 16 drivers could win a race and the final playoff spot or spots would be decided on points. IndyCar – Scott Dixon ties Mario Andretti with 52nd career IndyCar win Scott Dixon snapped a 22-race winless streak Sunday and moved into a tie with Mario Andretti for second on IndyCar’s career wins list when he held off pole sitter Colton Herta and Felix Rosenqvist in the series’ return to Canada. Dixon’s first win since May 2021 at Texas extends Dixon’s streak of winning at least one race in a record 18 consecutive years, and it leaves him trailing only A.J. Foyt’s 67 wins on the career list. It also shoves Dixon into the thick of the points race as he chases a seventh title, which would match Foyt for the most in the history of the open-wheel series. USA Soccer – Alex Morgan has assumed a more vocal role for US women Alex Morgan and the U.S. women’s national soccer team are in Mexico preparing for a showdown with rival Canada on Monday night in the title game of the CONCACAF W Championship. The United States and Canada have already qualified for next summer’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand as top finishers at the tournament. But the winner of the final also earns one of the region’s berths at the 2024 Olympics in France. Morgan, 33, is now one of the more senior members of the team, which has brought in budding players like fellow forwards Sophia Smith, Mallory, Pugh, and Trinity Rodman since the Tokyo Olympics. With Brent away at the cottage this week, Eric and John recap the action from the Atlanta Athletic Club where Nelly Korda put on a dominant performance to bring home her first major victory at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship. Nelly has been on absolute fire this year, also winning the previous week at the Meijer LPGA Classic. Her final score of -19 was only two strokes shy of tying the record score relative to par at a women's major championship. We also discuss a valiant effort put forth by Lizette Salas who was unable to match Nelly's play, but also separated herself from the pack, finishing in second place, 6 strokes clear of the third place finisher. And what would any major championship be without some controversy? The one knock against Salas' play was her pace, as she routinely took well over a minute to take her shot. While a slow play penalty was assessed in this tournament, it actually wasn't against Salas. After a great finish in Atlanta, we turn to a somewhat less exciting finish up in Cromwell, Connecticut where The Travelers Championship took EIGHT playoff holes to determine a winner. While this should has set up to be one of the most thrilling finishes, it ultimately fell completely flat as viewers watched Harris English (the eventual winner) and Kramer Hickok trade pars for over two hours. We wrap up the episode talking about the final qualifiers for the women's Olympic golf event and John takes us through his PIP moment of the week, which, unsurprisingly, is not PIP related at all. It's another "post-major" let-down week, but the guys are still amped up to recap the KPMG PGA Championship and Nelly's rise to the World No. 1 in women's golf! It was a valiant--yet slow--effort from Lizette Salas, in what was essentially a two-horse race down in Atlanta! On the PGA side, it was another two-horse race, but this was a marathon and not a sprint, as Harris "F-ing" English held off UT's Kramer Hickock in an epic, eight-hole playoff to win the Traveler's Championship up in CT!!! Plus, we talk some Euro Tour action as Oklahoma State's Vik Hovland wins the BMW in Munich (without the eye patch) and we talk local golf, as a few friends of the pod made a good account of themselves in last week's OGA Stroke Play Championship held at "the Jimmie" in Norman! All that, plus picks/best bets for the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit this weekend, which J-Teal will have you know, is actually slightly north of the Canadian border (shout out to all our listeners in Windsor)!!! Enjoy this week's YSO podcast, and happy birthday, 'Murrica!!!

Andy and Brendan had enough of the pillow fight between Harris English and Kramer Hickock, so they just hit the record button hoping it would end before they ended the episode. They begin with thoughts on the Women's PGA Championship, where Nelly Korda ended the American drought at the majors and became the new No. 1 ranked player in the world. They discuss her immense distance advantage over Lizette Salas, who hung in during a weekend that became a two-horse race. In between incredulous groans about more pars, they then move onto the other events from the weekend. The spread at the Senior Players is discussed as is Viktor Hovland's win in Germany. The wildlife at the Live and Work In Maine Open is noted. The longest conflicts in human history are relayed as they continue watching the English-Hickock bout. On the Travelers, Bubba's complete barf down the stretch is panned before they sign off with a potential resolution from Hartford.

This Friday episode is late but it's a fairly evergreen ramble about the structure and shortcomings of professional golf, at multiple levels. Andy and Brendan begin first with the Women's PGA, where Lizette Salas is back on a leaderboard and speaking candidly about her recent struggles. There are also options on the board for ending the American drought. At the Travelers, they hit on the post-major hangover effect. They discuss Alex Cejka reprising 1953 Ben Hogan, missing a “major” and chance at the Social Security Slam because he had to play his home open on the Euro Tour. There's debate on some KFT “members” suggesting that PGA Tour University is insulting and that members should get priority over the college studs. News of the strict British Open regulations for the players, while allowing 32,000 fans in the gates, has provoked grumbling among the pros. Could we see some abstain from going? There's also further discussion on the Olympics, how Ponte Vedra has done it no favors, and how NBC, with rights to both, has to balance its precious Olympics priority with the precious FedExCup. Precision Pro Flashback Friday goes back to a past Women's LPGA Championship, when a fast-food joint put its thumb on the scale and demanded 51 years of history and regulations be thrown out the window.
