Welcome to Slow Day Radio! Featuring the talents and personalities of Justin, Theo, Ethan, Sara and Andrew. Each episode features small talk, smack talk, 5-Minute Reviews (the team reviews a different game every week - both new and old, The Main Quest (weekly topic of discussion or central theme of the podcast, ranging from silly to serious), Community Shout-Out (a plug of a gaming-related website, YouTube channel, Twitch streamer, developer, Twitter personality or whomever we find interesting or would like to draw attention). Half of the fun of podcasts comes from audience interaction – be sure to share your thoughts on our Facebook page or Twitter.
(We apologize that we don't have a new episode this week. However, we'd like to highlight an older episode we very much enjoyed! Thanks for listening.) This week’s 5-Minute-Review game is Fable: The Lost Chapters. Developed by Lionhead Studios and published by Microsoft, this Xbox/PC game is a fantasy action RPG with an large, bustling world to explore, an intutive leveling system, engaging combat and a satisfying story. The game features an unique morality and infamy system: your character's behavior and choices changes the world around you. If you act heroically, NPCs will cheer for you and give you gifts and praise. If you commit evil, NPCs will boo and jeer or scream and run away from your terrifying appearance. While short, the story really makes you feel like a hero (or villian). Join in on our fun adventure for this week's Main Quest, as Justin and Theo try to guess a game's title based on the description on the back of the box. Can you beat their scores? In our Community Shout-Out this week: - Ally McLean (of Robot House games) @RobotHouseAU - Acid Wizard Studio As always, we love hearing from you! Welcome to episode 14 of Slow Day Radio! Today, on The Patch Notes (gaming news) - eSports coming to the Olympics - Nintendo facing lawsuit - Atari suing KitKat - Gaming collections sells for major $$$! This week’s 5-Minute-Review game is Paragon, by Epic Games. This third-person free-to-play MOBA is a gorgeous, polished beta build with a potentially bright future. The map structure and strategic gameplay should be familiar to most MOBA players, and the third-person combat is reminiscent of titles like Smite. [Our team played mostly PVE modes, so our experience cannot reflect character balance.] This week's Main Quest dives into the world of polygons as we explore our favorite titles from the N64, Playstation 1, and Dreamcast. What are YOUR favorite early 3D games? Let us know! In our Community Shout-Out this week: - Incredible Critics, a movie & tv podcast - Wrestling with Gaming - a YouTube channel - History Nerd - YouTube channel As always, we love hearing from you! Welcome to episode 13 of Slow Day Radio! Today, on The Patch Notes (gaming news) - Sonic Mania delayed for PC - Xbox One X definitive price and release date - Major No Man's Sky patch - Riot loses in skin-related lawsuit - New DOTA 2 heroes incoming - Valve announces new video game This week’s 5-Minute-Review game is Destiny, by Bungie. Destiny is an online-only massive multiplayer first-person-shooter in a science fiction setting. Years in the making, this ambitious project didn't measure up to the expectations of most of it's playerbase, but still managed to be a very enjoyable experience. In the distant future, humanity (and allied races) are fighting dark forces converging on our galaxy. Hostile alien species seek to destroy humanity as it's been blessed by an entity known as "The Traveler." The game features several explorable planets with open-world maps that offer various quests, strikes and raids to earn loot. Storytelling is very light, which is one of the major complaints. Some balance changers, diversity of classes and bullet-sponge enemy bosses are a few of Destiny's more glaring issues, but solid gunplay and an intriguing galaxy to explore still makes this an enjoyable title. This week's Main Quest, for better or worse, delves into the underbelly of gaming culture and subcultures. Language, communities, and social interaction have all been influenced by gaming culture. What causes these changes? What subcultures have we seen emerge from gaming communities? Does gaming perpetuate or discourage individualism found in American culture? What are YOUR thoughts on the culture of gaming? In our Community Shout-Out this week: - Adam's Apple, opening in Mansfield, PA - EA Access new games - Team USA in the Overwatch World Cup As always, we love hearing from you! Be sure to like & comment on Facebook.com/SlowDayRadio or tweet us @SlowDayRadio!
Welcome to episode 12 of Slow Day Radio! Today, on The Patch Notes (gaming news) - StarCraft to be remastered - Horizon Zero Dawn DLC launch date announced - Possible Spyro remaster in the future - The USA will be playing in the Overwatch World Cup this weekend This week’s 5-Minute-Review game is the early-access game, Fortnite, by Epic Games. This mission-based co-op survival third-person shooter is the latest addition to the Epic Games lineup. Currently in early access, the game has a lot to offer and is well optimized. The gameplay features missions in open world maps where players collect resources and complete objectives to build a base and protect themselves (and usually a target) from monster attacks. The gameplay is pretty fun and varied amongst the different hero classes, however, the missions feel pretty repetetive in the early game. The loot crate system present in the game can hold some players back behind a paywall (or extremely heavy grind) that is somewhat disheartening. This week's Main Quest takes a trip back in time to the 8-bit and 16-bit era as we discuss our favorite retro games. Let us know your favorites on Facebook or Twitter! In our Community Shout-Out this week: - Johnny'z Hot Rod Cafe in Wellsboro, PA. - Natural Selection 2 PC game - YouTuber Olan Roger's new animated YouTube series, The Lion's Blaze. As always, we love hearing from you! Be sure to like & comment on Facebook.com/SlowDayRadio or tweet us @SlowDayRadio!
Welcome to episode 11 of Slow Day Radio! Today, on The Patch Notes (gaming news) - Overwatch forms 7 pro teams for new league - PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds seeing ban reforms - DOTA 2 makes changes to accomodate new players - BBC to air eSports on BBC3 channel This week’s 5-Minute-Review game is the early-access PC game, Dark and Light, by Snail. Originally launched in 2006 as an MMORPG by NPCube, Dark and Light saw mostly negative reviews. Years later the license was picked up by Snail and is now developed into a fantasy survival sandbox RPG. The game hits most of the marks of a survival game, with thirst, hunger and other meters to maintain to fulfill your character's needs. The ability to craft many objects and structures is also present. A relatively unique spell-casting system for magic users exists. However, the game is very poorly optimized (even for an early access game) and is graphically underwhelming - especially compared to the promotional materials and "gameplay trailers." Dark and Light has the makings and potential for something incredible in the future, but in its current state, it's difficult to justify the somewhat hefty $30.00 price tag. It's all fun and games in this week's Main Quest, but on a professional level. The eSports has grown exponentially in the past couple years and there are exciting changes and additions coming soon. Blizzard recently announced the introduction of The Overewatch League and released information regarding professional Overwatch league player salaries. What does the future hold for this new entertainment industry? Enjoy Part 1 of our discussion! In our Community Shout-Out this week: - Overwatch University subreddit (tips and tricks for Overwatch players) - YouTuber Olan Roger's new tv show coming to TBS, Final Space As always, we love hearing from you! Welcome to episode 10 of Slow Day Radio! Today, on The Patch Notes (gaming news) - Retro arcade game Galaga may see an tv show adaptation - PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds greater character customization incoming - Oldschool and new RuneScape coming to mobile This week’s 5-Minute-Review game is the early-access PC game, Battlerite (also coming to Xbox One). Developed by Stunlock Studios, Battlerite is something of a spiritual successor to their previous game, Bloodline Champions. As a team-based, top-down shooter/arena brawler, Battlerite has many familiar traits to two currently popular genres, MOBAs and hero shooters. The game pits 3v3, 2v2, or 1v1 players against each other in an arena fighting with a champion from a roster of 21 characters. Each champion fills a role in a particular class, including melee, range, and support. The object of the main game mode is to eliminate enemy players through battle, using each of the champions unique, defining abilities. In early access the game is fairly polished and offers a decent level of content, but it will require further balance changes, some additional content, and a strong player base for it to really take off. However, we see great potential. This week's Main Quest ventures into the human mind. How does gaming affect us and the way we think and react? What does psychology say about video games. Are they a waste of time? Do video games cause violent behavior? What benefits can be found from playing? Join us for part 1 of our gaming psychology session! In our Community Shout-Out this week: - Pacific Rim 2 teaser - Ready Player One teaser - Bright, a Netflix film As always, we love hearing from you! Welcome to episode 9 of Slow Day Radio! This week's feature include a special guest (and former Grubby's Games star) - Zach Pearson! Today, on The Patch Notes (gaming news) - Half Life releases a patch update...19 years later? - Bad news for the Wild West MMO This week’s 5-Minute-Review game is Sony exclusive, Horizon Zero Dawn by Guerilla Games. This open-world action roleplaying game takes place on future Earth, when a cataclysmic event in the past caused machines to take over and revert humanity (and the world as we know it) to a psuedo-prehistoric state. The machines have evoloved to take the form of robotic beasts and humanity lives in tribes. You play as Aloy - a young woman seeking to uncover the mysteries of the machines, the past and the secrets of her parents. Horizon Zero Dawn is a gorgeous title with tight controls, a massive world and an intriguing story. Join us for our Main Quest (our weekly dicussion topic): tell us your favorite video game protagonists and antagonists. Some mentioned in today's episode: Jak (from Jak & Daxter), The Illusive Man (from the Mass Effect series), Nathan Drake (from Uncharter), and M Bison (from Street Fighter). We'd love to hear who you like, and why! Leave a comment on Facebook or Twitter! This week's Community Shout-Out: - Zach Pearson, our special guest. Check out the commercial for Grubby's Games he starred in here! - RocketJump (film company and video game enthusiasts), especially their Video Game High School and Dimension 404 series. - Nabisco & Oreo (Sara wants cookies!) Welcome to episode 8 (a special LIVE edition) of Slow Day Radio! This week's feature was recorded in-store at Grubby's Games in Wellsboro during the town's First Friday event and includes interviews with customers! Today, on The Patch Notes (gaming news) - Sony makes a surprising announcement about an upcoming partnership - DOOMFIST punches into Overwatch PTR - Playerunknown releases update on roadmap to the game's future This week’s 5-Minute-Review game is the 2015 Star Wars Battlefront, by DICE and EA Games. This online multiplayer shooter (and successor to the earlier series released on Xbox, PS2 and PC) is a lackluster addition to the collection and, frankly, a major disappointment to Star Wars fans and gamers alike. The Main Quest - our weekly discussion and main topic - explores a very serious topic this week: if we got to pick any video game character as our college roommate for the next 4 years, who would we choose? Who would YOU choose? We'd love to know! Leave a comment on our Facebook page or tweet us! This week's Community Shout-Out: - Johnny'z Hot Rod Cafe in Wellsboro, PA (for some of the best food in town, and great service!) - All of our listeners, Grubby's Games customers, and anyone who stopped in during First Friday! As always, we love hearing from you! Be sure to like & comment on Facebook.com/SlowDayRadio or tweet us @SlowDayRadio!
Welcome to episode 7 of Slow Day Radio! Today, on The Patch Notes (gaming news) - Many new E3 games were announced the past two weeks - Crazy huge new CPU - Atari announces new game console This week’s 5-Minute-Review game is The Stanley Parable, by indie developer/publisher Galactic Cafe. Originally a mod of Half Life 2, The Stanley Parable was eventually redeveloped into it's own title, expanding the experience. The game is a first-person exploration "choice simulator" of sorts, featuring multiple endings. While there isn't any combat or action sequenced gameplay, there are interactive moments during exploration and the entire experience is narrated with humorous commentary. It currently costs around $3.00 on G2A.com and is on sale on Steam for the duration of their summer sale special. The Main Quest - our weekly discussion and main topic - delves into the world of indie gaming and development. Indie games are difficult to define, but many consider any game that is both developed and self-published by a non-AAA studio could be labled an indie game. Sadly, the indie scene in gaming is in a sour state due to developers' lack of accountability. Learn more in our episode this week. This week's Community Shout-Outs: - Nerd On a Budget (YouTube channel with budgeted PC builds) - Nabisco (and Oreo) - Alligators (the animal) As always, we love hearing from you! Today, on The Patch Notes (gaming news) - Updated Fortnight gameplay revealed - Absolver closed beta starts today (Monday, June 12 at 4:00pm) - CD Projekt Red hacked and blackmailed - New Bubsy game This week’s 5-Minute-Review game is Dishonored, by Bethesda. Dishonored follows the story of Corvo, royal protector to an empress in a fictional world with a steam punk / industrial revolution-esque setting. When the empress is murdered, Corvo is framed.
