In this episode, we dove into how game design can create toxicity in communities. How do the design choices behind popular MOBAs like League of Legends, DOTA, and Honor of Kings encourage (intentionally or not) toxic player behaviour? //SUPPORT Help us produce new and exclusive content! Matchmaking: it's hard. Wait, not the online dating kind (well, maybe that too) but the kind where you have to match a bunch of different players with different hardware and different geographic locations together over high-speed Internet and let them have fun in a game together. Prompted by Activision's release of a white paper about Call of Duty's skill-based matchmaking methodology, this week we dig into the technical and sociological ins and outs of creating a rewarding online experience for players, from server types to hosting heuristics, player behaviors, ranking types, and a bunch more.Activision's COD white paper about matchmaking: https://www.activision.com/cdn/research/CallofDuty_Matchmaking_Series_2.pdf Support the Pod! I am open to other perspectives, but a lot of the love of games to me is down to how it feels to hit a button. When the jump feels bad, the game is bad. When the jump feels good, the game is good. That's oversimplifying, intentionally. But so many games ARE just a collection of button presses, and how good they feel to hit. Platformers, action games, shooters, MOBAs, all of these are represented on our nominees. Whose buttons feel the best to hit? Let's decide that. The Nominees Are: Peppino (Pizza Tower) Chai (Hi-Fi Rush) Kai (Gravity Circuit) Spark (Spark the Electric Jester 3) Blaster Stance (Star Wars: Jedi Survivor) Wild Dancer (Like a Dragon: Ishin) Sybil (Pseudoregalia) Xeku Zwei (Gundam Battle Operation 2) GM [Gatherroad Type] (Gundam Battle Operation 2) Alex [CA] (Gundam Battle Operation 2) Sisquiede (Gundam Battle Operation 2) MSN-04FF Sazabi (Gundam Battle Operation 2) Woundwort (Gundam Battle Operation 2) Mega Mewtwo X (Pokemon Unite) Mario Mario (Mario Wonder) Here's our write-up for the winners! Back when MOBAs were the flavor of the day - replaced, in time, by CCGs, Battle Royales, and farming sims - I found myself a little at odds with League of Legends' character designs. Specifically, they were fantastic.
StarCraft (gotta love that one word and double capitalized title). This is a cool game. Even the metallic lettering of the title is cool. The music is good. The voice lines are funny. If not entirely dignified, StarCraft feels mature where other games in the 90s were often irreverent or puerile. The human campaign follows the rise of a terrorist faction in the midst of a galactic race (species) war. The Zerg campaign follows the quest to bring their species to biologic perfection, where the Protoss campaign is somewhat more muddled, and has maybe aged the worst. The Protoss are sort of Roman? Having an honor culture that is a bureaucratic nightmare for those just trying to save the galaxy. But their units are maybe the coolest so there's that. The campaign is long and it really shows its age. It has almost no tutorials and the beginning of almost every mission is the same: a 15 minute period where you plod along and get your economy up to a point where you can actually build an army. The pathing of the units is also atrocious: marines can fight but pray that they never encounter an elevated path/ramp because that is the ultimate counter. A lot of our StarCraft opinions are informed by and likely inferior to observations made by game designer David Sirlin. Kind of essential listening is his podcast on both StarCraft and Starcraft 2 as we reference it a lot (links below) Join our discord!!! https://discord.gg/ACbDjNhMpJ Everywhere that you can find us: https://linktr.ee/wideflank Timestamps: 0:00 - Intro 4:25 - What is an RTS 6:40 - MOBAs are the new RTS 14:57 - New to the RTS genre 16:38 - The campaign is a challenge (to learn) 32:40 - Overcooked and replayability 35:25 - VIBE 48:00 - Strategy beyond rock paper scissors 54:00 - Balance and meta 1:04:25 - StarCraft 2 1:16:40 - Skill ceilings, do they really exist 1:25:00 - Ratings 1:30:41 - Next game, IMMORTALITY. One of our traditions over here at the Gimmick Awards is this category, in its various incarnations. The name might confuse, but it's a straightforward idea: in any variety of action game, moves and tools are given to specific characters. Which character has the most interesting and fun overall toolset? When this category started, our focus was purely on fighting games, but over the years we've broadened it to character action games, shooters, MOBAs, and more. And with so many of these being live service games, a lot of effort is made to lovingly add new friends to their respective game's roster, with an associated movelist. The Nominees Are: Pale Rider (Gundam Evolution) Sazabi (Gundam Evolution) Unicorn (Gundam Evolution) Dozle Zaku (Gundam Evolution) Omega Rugal (The King of Fighters XV) Athena (The King of Fighters XV) Shez (Fire Emblem: Three Hopes) NecoArc (Melty Blood Type Lumina) Edmund Dantes, the Count of Monte Cristo (Melty Blood Type Lumina) Lab Coat 21 (Dragon Ball FighterZ) Baiken (Guilty Gear Strive) Testament (Guilty Gear Strive) Bridget (Guilty Gear Strive) Sin Kiske (Guilty Gear Strive) Splatana (Splatoon 3) Tri-Stringer (Splatoon 3) Striker (DNF Duel) Inquisitor (DNF Duel) Hitman (DNF Duel) Schuzrum Galluss (Mobile Suit Gundam Battle Operation 2) The Three RX-0s (Mobile Suit Gundam Battle Operation 2) That's it for this week! We'll see you next week with more Gimmick Awards, starting Monday! Here's the write-up for our winners! Adam Tuckwell, Managing Director for Mobas, a brand transformation business in the UK, crafts, seeds, amplifies, and channels corporate messaging to affect change as social media and other communications platforms shift information power dynamics between leaders and their constituent audiences. Adam brings communications experience spanning video gaming, traditional publishing, and brand agencies to explain how customers' and employees' voices generate and facilitate transformation externally and internally. KEY TAKEAWAYS [02:49] Adam imagined his career differently to how it turned out. [03:36] People have helped Adam identify his skills and what they are best suited for. [04:34] Adam recognizes the importance of communications. [05:59] The challenge of engaging teens in the video game sector. [09:45] Updating how Cambridge University Press communicated with their audiences. [10:16] Adapting to different pace and process challenges at his new job, Adam also launches a podcast. [11:20] The role of empathy in interviews—stopping broadcasting and starting to listen. [12:03] Being naturally inquisitive, the next move was to an agency to explore diagnosis and problem-solving. [14:16] The Future of Work manifests differently for SMEs versus for large enterprises. [15:10] The Future of Work is being driven by workers—not management—being empowered. [16:03] Companies' transformation involves exploring different ideas and ways of working, getting beyond blinkered views of their situations. [17:30] How the Future of Work is entirely changing the way we work. [20:35] Clients want to solve a particular problem and don't initially recognize how the issue fits within their wider organizational structure. [19:08] The ongoing journeys of change—some are iterative, some are fundamental. [21:39] Helping future leaders identify where there are issues as iterations are ongoing. [22:30] In the current environment, where everyone is strained and stretched, how to identify the opportunities. [25:17] Customers now have choices and voices which mean companies need proactively to manage how they are viewed so issues don't snowball. [27:20] Adam gets excited about inward communications and the Employee Value Proposition, which is hard for some organizations to adapt to. [30:30] The next generation of workers give Adam hope with their openness and different expectations of the workplace. [31:52] As a child, Adam communicated visuals for his parents and appreciated the experiences of others and the relevance of tailoring messaging. [33:40] The importance of trust and sensitivity to bring people along, combined with transparency and openness. [34:20] Different types of leaders are rising now with diverse backgrounds and experiences. [36:08] The future for leaders who can channel Gen Zs' insights and appetite for change. [39:12] The importance of investing in failure, experimenting for the future. [40:52] Encouraging companies to focus 70% of their energies on today. [43:40] IMMEDIATE ACTION TIP: Don't be alone as a leader. Ensure you have a friend or a group of friends with whom you can be vulnerable and who will be honest and critique what you do. Invest in relationships that ensure the decisions you make are the right ones for everybody. RESOURCES Adam Tuckwell on LinkedIn Adam Tuckwell on Twitter@adamtuckwell adam.tuckwell@mobas.com Mobas website QUOTES “People have helped me along the way to identify what I'm good at and how my skills might best be used.” “The future of work is already here, it's just that some companies haven't opened their eyes to it yet.” “So what I really like about transformation within the organizations we work with is that there's a real appetite to try different ideas and concepts and ways of working that they wouldn't have done before.” “I think so many organizations are purely built to be reactive and they have too many layers that stop issues from being dealt with when they're small and instead they snowball into big issues.” “We need to have an understanding of where our people are, what they're experiencing, whether they're up or they're down, whether they've got issues outside of work.” “Gen Z is seen as being a bit more entitled or set in their ways which are very negative traits. But then on the positive side, they're really passionate about the environment, they want to save the world — they really don't like what we've done to it.”
Needless to say, there's a ton of source material in the Pokémon world for Unite to create Pokémon from, and your answers showed that. More and more new Pokémon are being added to Unite, and with good reason - the multitude of ways to use Pokémon has already been established, and MOBAs are already far and away proven in their concept. Kevin and Mike discuss what Pokémon would be cool to see! They also discuss Scarlet and Violet, and which Pokémon, of those already revealed (new or otherwise), are going to be worth taking a look at.

Welcome back! This week, Ryan talks to Jeremy from PopCap about Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2, while Sid finally faces his fear of MOBAs and shares his impressions of Epic's accessible-yet-hardcore Paragon. Justin is once again crippled by his inability to choose between Destiny and Final Fantasy XIV, and we can only assume Nick is lost in the wilderness somewhere, because he's not in this episode. I'm sure he's fine.
Ryan and Matt "Ryan please stop nicknaming me in the podcast descriptions" Amberg are back and talking about The Superbowl, Comedy Bang Bang live, Dumb and Dumber To, Bridge of Spies, Foxcatcher, and Mazerunner 1 and 2 before it's on to time spent with Xcom 2, Churchill Solitaire, Tales from the Borderlands Episode 4, Tetris Ultimate[ly futile], Star Wars Battlefront as Hitplay, LEGO Dimensions' Portal pack, Batman Arkham Knight's rough stuff, and good ol' Destiny. Honestly that should have been enough, but they go on unsolicited about Destiny's February update, the return of Overwatch and pretending to understand MOBAs, Street Fighter 5's cinematic trailer, The Division's division, Hitman's new trailer and beta, Doom's date, Mirror's Edge's Catalyst's trailer's and's beta's, H1Z1's split and release, Titanfall 2's campaign (it exists!), and Red Dead's brief reappearance on Xbox One.
We've been writing about and playing video games together for awhile now, but how well do we really know one another's tastes? We also spend some time talking about the Kojima/Konami fiasco, retro side-scroller Odallus, and why MOBAs are […]
Jon has been playing the Heroes of the Storm closed beta, and he has a lot to say about it. Plus: tune in for a MOBA 101 recap, and hear how Jon thinks it’ll fare against other popular MOBAs like League of Legends and Dota 2! Click here to download this Unqualified Gamers Podcast episode Show Notes: * Cody and Jon discuss what they’re hoping to accomplish on the show * Minnesota is a tundra where nobody lives, and that is why the WiiU works better there than it does in Chicago; also, Cody is radioactive * Daylight Saving is stupid, and is comparable only in practice to a dry handjob on your birthday * Jon took his son on a walk because the weather is nice, which organically leads to Cody asking Jon how hard it is to produce breast milk * Now that Cody’s girlfriend is listening to podcasts and she has identified the worst part of terrible podcasts, Cody finds this episode getting caught up in the same pitfalls * Jon nearly died of a sinus infection, which he compared to that one time he was stabbed in the face * Cody went to a pretentious but incredibly delicious and amazing bar in Wicker Park called Violet Hour, and then he talks about pharmacists and basically the best whiskey ever * KFC’s secret recipe is kept in a vault and guarded by a sorcerer * Cody and Jon debut “Qualifying Round,” a segment where they explain a gaming term before delving deeper into a related subject. This week: learn about the MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) genre of video games (also a very popular type of e-sport) * Jon explains League of Legends’ drafting system and how it contributes to making games take around an hour to play * Jon explains how Heroes of the Storm features shorter games than League of Legends and Dota 2, has multiple maps, and has other traits that make it distinctly different than its peers in the MOBA genre * Jon also talks about the Heroes of the Storm community is more inviting/forgiving than the community he experienced when playing League of Legends, and Cody compares it to other e-sports * Cody goes on an inane tangent about unlocking stuff in video games, using Batman: Arkham City and Hyrule Warriors as examples * Getting back to the main point, Jon gets to some listener Q&A, answering a question about micro-transactions within Heroes of the Storm * Another question asks if we at Unqualified Gamers actually show game play, which Cody tackles before giving an overview of their YouTube content * Cody incidentally mentions #GamerGate for the first time ever on the podcast, but only to tell the story of how he got really drunk one time and talked about it on a one-man episode * Check out Cody’s video on “flipping,” especially as it applies to consoles, and find out why he doesn’t own a Limited Edition 20th Anniversary Sony Playstation 4 * Jon has been playing Adventure Mode in Hyrule Warriors, even though he continues to insist that it’s not a “good” game, and he can’t seem to stop himself from playing more of it * Cody posits that Hyrule Warriors, at this point, may have surpassed Final Fantasy XIII-2 as the most...

AIE NEWS AIE WOW: Cross-realm raid LFG Here's something I just found out, and even though I bet every other World of Warcraft'er already knew it, I thought I'd share, just in case. If you open the Raid window, there is an “Other Raids” tab at the top that will let you LFG for for cross-realm raids. This seems like a very helpful feature for finding a raid during low-population times, including for those pesky Timeless Isle Celestials that I never seem to catch anyone killing. AIE EVE: The most expensive battle ever waged What started out as a missed payment has led to the largest battle to ever take place in EVE Online. Hoots describes it as “a struggle between multiple coalitions that has involved nearly every nullsec entity in one form or another”. The end result has been the destruction of over $300,000 equivalent dollars worth of ships. Hoots posted a video in the AIE EVE forums showing some of the destruction. AIE STO: 4 Year Anniversary Event is live We can't put this any better than Perfect World did themselves, so we'll just tell you what they said: “To celebrate our Four-Year Anniversary, from now until Thursday, February 27, Q is hosting parties and giving away prizes on Earth Spacedock, Qo'noS and New Romulus Command. In addition to the festivities, we are also proud to release our latest Feature Episode, “A Step Between Stars,” with the talented voice work of Voyager's own Tuvok, as played by Tim Russ! This special episode continues the thrilling Solanae Dyson Sphere storyline and will leave everlasting repercussions on the STO universe as you know it. Don't miss out on the fun, and make sure to read the rest of this news post for a glimpse of what is in store for you, as well as our Anniversary Rewards Blog to find out what epic rewards await you.” AIE FF: House collection reaches 6 million gil Big kudos to the AIE Final Fantasy gang; They just passed 6 million gil collected towards purchasing their guild house. You can help earn earn gil just by jumping into a treasure hunting group with a level 45+ character. You don't have to be any good, you just have to be there. For more information and other ways you can help, see Jasmine's post the AIE Final Fantasy section of the forums. AIE General: Imperium Ludi forums reminder Don't forget, while AIE has official presence in a large number of games, we have explorations going on into almost every game out there, from MMOs to F2Ps to MOBAs. If you want to see what other people are playing, or throw out an idea for a game we should look into, check out the Imperium Ludi section of the forums. AIE General: Skyrim pre-order deals And speaking of other games, there is a thread in the Imperium Ludi forums concerning Elder Scrolls Online that contains information on a number of discounts towards pre-orders of the new Skyrim MMO. For example, there is a code for 20% off from Green Man, and a link for 25% off from Gamefly. If you've been thinking about pulling the trigger on a purchase of the game, check the thread and get a good deal. AIE Nomads: Rift reminder We mentioned it last week, but just to remind everyone, if you've been thinking about jumping into Rift, the AIE Nomads, that group of game wanderers, are roaming their way into Rift starting on Saturday and lasting all month. See Lotwook's post in the forums, or even his AIE Wiki entry for more information. AIE General: Town Hall Just a head's up: AIE is planning another AIE Town Hall meeting...
