Welcome to another exciting episode of Startup Your Small Business and Learn. Hosted by Ola Williams, this podcast aims to enable budding entrepreneurs with the psychology of retail and enhance financial awareness, all while staying positively optimistic. In this episode, we continue to delve into the world of balance sheets, explaining how you can negotiate your payables to effectively improve your financial standing. Entrepreneurial success comes down to strategic management of liabilities—something that has been discussed extensively in previous episodes. It's all about your business's ability to not feel pressured and to have the freedom to operate smoothly. But what about the warning signs on your balance sheets? Are there obvious signs of danger? And are there practical steps you can take to maintain balance? Drawing from years of experience as an accountant, Ola Williams advises that assets must be capable of generating cash to ensure your business's survival. The secret lies in turning these assets into liquid cash, often referred to as 'working capital'. Further, your current assets could be cash in the bank or items that can easily be converted to cash. But if you're finding that your current liabilities exceed these, then you may be in financial distress, and it might be time to reassess your small business's financial standing. By the end of this episode, you should understand balance sheets better - from a non-finance background lens and you should be equipped to spot trouble in your finances and, with the strategies shared, be able to navigate through them. Remember to apply these lessons according to your personal circumstances and seek professional advice when necessary. Please do share the show to foster a community of startup solopreneurs learning together. Stay tuned for the concluding episode of the series. In the balance sheet, equity is usually presented in the form of the owner's money brought into the business and any profits or losses the business has accumulated over time. You see when you want to buy a business, you want to take a quick snapshot of the balance sheet. This is so that - at least, when your professional advisers such as accountants are discussing with you, you can follow reasonably. Even when you already have your business, it doesn't hurt to from time to time review your business balance sheet. So far, we've looked at what assets are, and in the last episode, we looked into short-term liabilities. We've also done a bit of introduction on long-term liabilities. I encourage you to listen to episodes 25 and 26 for a catch-up. Also, a reminder that I'm intentionally keeping these episodes on finance short as they are meant for non-finance businesspeople, and I do appreciate it can be a lot to take in from that perspective. This episode continues with what long-term liabilities are. And it is part of an ‘8-series' show on how to read and interpret balance sheets. This is part 3. Do you find accounting intimidating? Or even boring? But then, hardly can we do any business without accounting. And of course, you can hire the right staff to do the technical bit for you. But, you may still find it beneficial to at least understand how to interpret some accounting/financial reports. And, believe it or not, it's far more approachable than you think. Why should you bother with this? Isn't this the job of your accountant? Well, you're right it is. But, paying attention to this and understanding it can save you significant cash in your business. After all, what harm can a 2nd level review of what your accountant is doing do? This episode is part of an ‘8-series' show on how to interpret financial reports. This is part 2. Imagine a car with no gas gauge- this means you buy gas and use it with no tracking of usage. What do you think will happen if you miscalculate and your car stops due to zero gas while on your way to an important appointment? Yes! You guessed right! That's not a situation we all want to be in. Same principle applies to the opportunity to track your personal finances. Last episode, I shared some of the results of the research I'm doing on saving time with the use of personal finance apps. This episode is the concluding part with my perspective on what personal finance apps can do and why you may want to consider using them as such. So here we go. Connect with Ola Williams: Website: https://bit.ly/3rxixue Instagram: https://bit.ly/3Qc5qH9 Linkedin: https://bit.ly/3Mbtzwz Let's chat! https://bit.ly/3MBwLSt
For over 5 years now, I've been researching how to save time by tracking personal finances. And my thought process is this: if we can track gas in our cars, which saves us time by letting us know how much gas we have in tank before embarking on a trip, then why shouldn't we track personal finances? And I'm particularly interested in personal finance because I believe business finance is structured enough. At least, most times, we need to keep records of spending to continue in business. But, personal finance can easily go untracked and lead to a waste of time if not approached intentionally. I interviewed and surveyed working professionals and entrepreneurs to feel their pulse on their use of automation in their personal finances. An alignment from one card may be all you need to go on in a moment. If words like intention, alignment, abundance, positivity, manifest, belief, and gratitude resonate with you, then this episode is for you. This episode features 28 statements from manifestation cards I have created. Plus 3 bonus statements. See if they resonate with you. Do you, your friend or your family member know a store that seemed to be doing well but suddenly closed shop? Did you wonder why they closed up as you had noticed they were busy? Did you wish they hadn't closed up as they were your go-to place for certain needs? Imagine if you could help that your favourite store supposing things were in your control. Well, you don't have to imagine it; I'm on a mission to unpack how you can help if you were in charge. In this episode, I'm going to show what can help and why I believe it can help. The solution, from my perspective, is "How to balance liquidity and profit. Is there a trade-off and why should you care how this impact your small business?" Take a listen. These days, one of the questions I get asked more and more is about starting or buying a small business. My DM is full of them. Also, when I'm at events, that's what people pull me out to ask. I also get a lot of calls just on this. So, because I find myself repeating the same conversation over and over again, which is unproductive, I thought it would be more helpful to do a recording of it. That way, I can direct anyone wanting to know to this episode. Now, I need to say these are from a general point of view so do your own research and seek professional advice as may be applicable to your context. If you want more specific guidance based on my own personal experiences, I encourage you to book a discovery call with me. So here we go. As an entrepreneur, you wear all the hats of your business - sales, marketing, admin, bookkeeping etc. You may come to a point where you have some help with these, but ultimately, the ownership and the success of the business is on you. If you're not going to be marketing your own services, your own products, who will do it for you? On this episode, I had a conversation with Kathy Colaiacovo, a marketing strategist, President of Pepper It Marketing Services Inc. and host of the Marketing Your Private Practice with Kathy C podcast. Kathy shared her expertise on how an entrepreneur can communicate offerings effectively. Take a listen to the conversation and learn! In this new episode I introduce the concept of kindness and Niceness from the lens of being fair using a story someone told me. The story is about a lady named Pat who wanted to be served to her liking, without consideration for how that may or may not be helpful to others. Could it be that we sometimes consider kindness to be a sign of weakness and maybe that's why we don't practice it enough? Take a listen to learn much more! In this new episode, I had a conversation with CeeCee, the Founder and CEO of Dapper Style Mint Inc. and an expert in costume design, and personal and wardrobe styling, where we unpacked the link between appearance and confidence. I have often been puzzled about whether the way we show up on the outside contributes to having confidence. Someone once said that it is because of the crispness of notes that the ATM will accept some notes and reject some even though the value hasn't diminished. Therefore, presentation on the outside does seem to matter. However, sometimes, the most well-dressed people are not necessarily the most confident. Confidence is a muscle, which means you have to exercise that muscle regularly in order for it to build. Take a listen to the build-up of this conversation and much more! This week, I explore retail further by talking about 'Retail Therapy'. Would you like to consider how retail may be able to provide some comfort to you? Take a listen
Hello everyone. Today, I'm going to be exploring retail reality. The reality is, we are bound to exchange what we have with what we need. And so, it falls upon us to do it with some form of wisdom. What do I mean by this? Take a listen to find out more.
If you like to watch Formula 1, you would have noticed that there are needs for pitstops. Now, the race organizers try to make services at each stop as efficient as possible. So the issue is not whether there should be pitstop. Rather, it's more of an issue of "how do we make efficient use of time during the stop" They ask this so race contestants can get back on track. If we understand this, then we must know that there would be pitstops on our life journeys as well. On this episode, I aim to explore how you can manage these stops using practical examples. Take a listen.
How do you like to be greeted when you visit stores? Would you rather be left alone or appreciate some exchange of pleasantries? On this episode, I talk about two different scenarios. I believe each is valid. Hopefully, either resonates with you. Take a listen.
I've realized that networking is like a buffet, no matter what you are offered, once you're full, you're full. If you're taking a 3-course meal, you start with starters, next you eat your main dish. Once you're full, you can't take in more. But you may be able to take in some dessert. Because, it's not quite the same flavour as the main meal. When we collaborate, over time, we reach our capacity of a particular offering. Then, we would need a different taste. Networking can ensure that you still take a dessert, even when you're full. Want more details? Take a listen.
On this episode, I share a talk I gave at a wellness retreat - "Why You Should Practice Kindness". I believe how we say things (plus act) is tangible. That's why you can feel either positivity or negativity in an environment. I prefer the former and hopefully, you do as well. So, if you believe you can feel these things, why then don't you say things that translate into positive energy? Take a listen.
This week, I speak on the principle of "beginning with the end in mind". Whatever goals you have set, try starting with the end plan and work backwards. Take a listen to hear how it works.
On this episode, I share the story of Tina. It was clear Tina was due for a promotion. But the promotion wasn't forthcoming. Listen to learn how Tina navigated the situation which resulted in progress.

Today's episode is titled ‘Making Each Day Count' For the next few minutes, I'm gonna be talking about what I think matters, which is different for everyone. And by no means is this list exhaustive or ranked in order of importance. But I do hope that listening to this prompts you to have some reflection to see to it that you're spending your time on what really matters to you.
On this episode, I talk about “Friendship Bubbles”. I strongly believe that many of us find ourselves sometimes lonely, isolated, if you like. And if we can just be a bit intentional about friendships, perhaps, that could help. I think the major point is we cannot do life alone. And we are not being naïve to think that there are no bad people. But then, we are also recognizing that there are good people and through careful intention, we can attract our likes.
On this episode, I tell the stories of two ladies, Melon and Carrot, who surrendered to their pains before receiving what they were waiting for. Whatever it is that you're going through, for a change, think about how you can accept it. And maybe that could help.
