In today's episode I had the honour of speaking with Davey Lloyd who many of you might recognize from Sam Frost season of The Bachelorette and his appearance on Bachelor in Paradise. Once widely known as the ultimate party boy, Davey's life is currently undergoing a significant transformation. After battling cocaine and alcohol addiction for many years and almost losing his life in December 2023 he entered rehab and is now on a path of recovery. From the moment we introduced ourselves I was blown away by his vulnerability as a 34 year old male bravely overcoming addiction. His journey deeply resonated with me and I seriously could have chatted to Davey for hours. You will soon hear that his family means the world to him and that he struggles to accept the word proud when someone throws that his way. but Davey I am so proud of you and I know that once the listeners hear your story you will have that word thrown your way many more times. Davey serves as a reminder that the party boy persona is just a facade and what truly matters most are the layers underneath. I feel honored to have Davey as my first male guest on the podcast and I couldn't be happier to share his story with you. Trigger warning though…..this episode is not for the faint hearted or for young ears but one that you will most likely never forget.I hope you enjoy the episode With love and sobriety,Georgie I xVisit our website: https://thrivalistsobriety.comFollow Thrivalist here on InstagramJoin the free Facebook Community here. For this episode, we took a unique approach, delving into my personal journey amidst thought-provoking questions thrown at me in the kindness of ways by my marketing and social media manager, Bec. We embarked on an unexpected heart-to-heart, followed by a few tears as we peeled back the layers of my past experiences with alcohol. We shared tales of navigating the allure of alcohol from the confidence it seemed to promise in my teenage years to the empowerment I ultimately found in sobriety. We explored the evolution of our Aussie drinking culture, from the casual norms of adolescent binge drinking to Friday night knock-off drinks, to the mummy wine culture, corporate world and the heightened pressures of adulthood. We examined the social expectations we have been brought up to believe to be true around alcohol and how one morning, I decided to turn my back on those societal norms and rewrite my own story. In the midst of our conversation, we delved into the parallels between the restless nights after a few glasses of wine and the inner turmoil they reflected. We unpacked the myths surrounding alcohol, particularly its deceptive allure as a sleep aid and self-medication for anxiety. We also reflected on the fear of missing out (FOMO) that haunts the sober-curious, restless nights, and lingering anxiety post-night out, along with the subsequent daytime fatigue that follows. And, I recounted that pivotal morning that steered me toward a life of sobriety—not from a place of rock bottom but from a desire to regain my power and thrive. This episode extends beyond my own personal story; it's our hands, reaching out to those struggling and considering a similar path. Thrivalist offers a range of resources, coaching, courses, and community connections to support your journey, whether you're tentatively questioning your drinking habits or confidently striding towards a life of sobriety. I've always admired the quiet strength that comes from overcoming personal battles, and Leesa's story is one of true resilience. At 68, this mother and grandmother shared with us the intimate details of her journey, starting with casual drinks in a culture of social imbibing and escalating to the grips of alcohol dependency. Her candid recount of how her successful career in advertising both masked and exacerbated her struggle is as eye-opening as it is poignant. But Leesa's narrative isn't just about the challenges she faced; it's a testament to the liberating power of sobriety, which she found through the unconventional path of Thrivalist—a departure from the traditional routes many have tried and felt disconnected from.In our conversation, we peeled back the layers on the societal pressures women face, the balancing act of their many roles, and how self-care is often lost in the fray. Leesa's account illustrates the significance of setting boundaries and the courage it takes to prioritize one's health, even when it means altering the dynamics of close relationships. The dialogue opened a window into the importance of communication and community, which for many women, including the supportive souls at Thrivalist, becomes a lifeline. Their stories go beyond individual struggles, revealing a tapestry of shared experiences and collective triumphs that can only be woven together through vulnerability and mutual support. As we wrapped up our exchange, the spotlight turned to those curious about what a sober lifestyle might hold for them. The conversation wasn't just a retelling of past events; it was a beacon for those contemplating a similar path, laden with encouragement, practical advice, and a treasure trove of resources. "You might think you're deliberating with yourself and making choices. However, once you understand Addictive Voice Recognition, you realize that the Lizard brain or 'Addictive voice' or wine witch is not you."In this episode, Lucy discusses the concept of the Wine Witch and how tuning into our inner mentor can help us overcome cravings and grow as individuals. The brain is divided into two parts: the primitive reptilian brain (Lizard brain) and the more evolved primate/human brain (frontal cortex). The Lizard brain initiates cravings for alcohol, tricking us into believing it is essential for survival. The inner voice that compels us to drink is not our true self but the Lizard brain trying to meet its survival needs. Lucy shares a personal experience of the internal struggle between the rational decision to quit drinking and the Lizard brain's urge to drink. By understanding Addictive Voice Recognition, we can detach from the Lizard brain's deceitful nature and consciously choose not to listen to it. Lucy also suggests putting our inner critic in the same category as the addictive voice or wine witch, as both are driven by fear. To combat the wine witch, Lucy introduces the concept of the inner mentor, the version of ourselves we aspire to become. Tuning into this grounded, self-assured self can help us resist the wine witch's cravings. Lucy also shares a powerful visualization practice to help you tune in to this part of yourself.
