The final two. Guess who got the job.... JULES LUND! It would be another 4 years until Maz got her big break on TV and by then Jules was hosting Getaway and really smashing his career goals. This pair of TV and radio gems sit down and get personal about alcohol, the industry and what sobreity means to each of them. In this special crossover episode, Maz Compton from Last Drinks interviews Matt from Sober Friends Podcast about his unique and unexpected journey to sobriety. Matt shares how he had his last drink without even realizing it, how a TV show made him confront his alcohol problem, and how he felt like his body was on fire for weeks after quitting. Matt also opens up about his family history of alcoholism, his rules for drinking, and his challenges and rewards of living sober. Maz and Matt discuss the importance of asking yourself why you drink, how to deal with your feelings instead of numbing them, and how the universe speaks to us in whispers to guide us to our purpose. They also offer some practical advice and encouragement for anyone who is thinking of quitting drinking or struggling with sobriety. They also share how sobriety is not a magic bullet that will stop life from happening, but rather a key that will unlock your true potential and help you cope with whatever comes your way. In addition, Maz shares her own story of how she landed her dream job at MTV, but struggled with imposter syndrome, insecurity, and social anxiety. She reveals how alcohol became her coping tool for dealing with the pressures and expectations of being in the spotlight, and how she realized that she had a me problem, not a TV problem. She also talks about how she resigned from her dream job, went through a divorce, and faced other big life challenges that tested her relationship with alcohol. She also talks about how she discovered that she is an extroverted introvert, and how she learned to recharge her batteries in the right way without alcohol. She also shares how her job in breakfast radio gives her a sense of escapism and fun, but also can be exhausting and challenging. You might have heard the name Maz Compton over the years - that's because Maz is a bit of an Aussie great when it comes to media - she's been a personality in the space for over 12 years - with experience in radio, TV and online media. But what you might not know is that Maz battled with her relationship with booze… with regular drinks and parties stock standard in the media scene, drinking high volumes, often, was not only accepted but encouraged. Soon, Maz noticed that booze had become a coping mechanism for stress - before slowly creeping towards a dependence. If this sounds familiar, listen up Peachy, because this episode is for you. We love the way Maz isn't afraid to ‘have the conversation' around drinking - within Australia, it's basically a glorified answer to everything from celebrations, stress relief, practically any social engagement and for many - is simply routine. But why is it that our ears prick up, and our irritations arise when a mate turns you down for a drink at the pub? Are our reactions to someone ‘going sober' or even just ‘taking a break' from the booze a little judgemental, and perhaps unhelpful? Especially when we remember that alcohol, whether we like it or not, is actually a toxin that screws with our sleep, moods, weight and overall health? In this week's episode I sat down with breakfast radio and podcast host, Maz Compton. From landing her dream job as an MTV VJ to becoming the host of Sydney's top breakfast radio show, Maz was living a fast-paced life fuelled by parties, celebrities and booze. Maz has interviewed everyone from Alicia Keys to Dave Grohl, all the while playing a role to suit her environment. Working in entertainment media, Maz was often required to put on a smile and get the job done, which over the years, created a deep divide between the person she was presenting to the world, and how she was really feeling on the inside. In this conversation, Maz talks about her problematic relationship with alcohol and how she knew if something didn't change, she would inevitably hit rock bottom. Choosing a different path, Maz made the decision to quit drinking for good in January 2015 and hasn't looked back. In this episode we discuss what it means to reconnect with your authentic self in sobriety and how to remove the fear and lean into the unknown. Maz also shares what the most annoying part of being sober is (hint: avoiding the d**kheads). Finding your identity in sobriety can be scary for many women when they stop drinking. For years I described myself as a “red wine girl” and drinking was essentially my favorite hobby. I surrounded myself with other people who loved to drink so my social life, activities, favorite places, traditions and relationships were deeply intertwined with alcohol. When I stopped drinking I didn't know what I enjoyed without drinking. Maz Compton, host of the Last Drinks podcast and I are here to dig into how to find your identity in sobriety. Maz knew she had a problem with alcohol when she couldn't stop saying yes to it, despite having a high-powered career and success in all the externally visible areas of her life. Once she stopped drinking Maz had to figure out who she was, her interests and identity without alcohol. Maz Compton has been a fixture in Australia media for over a decade, from the early days of hosting MTV, to the heights of hosting a National Breakfast Show. She's a Co-Owner of F45, an ambassador for Dry July Foundation and Variety The Children's Foundation and author of The Social Rebellion - True Freedom Begins with A Cheeky Month Alcohol-Free. Maz has spent most of her adult life in front of the camera or behind a microphone hosting over 3million shows. She got her break on MTV as a VJ (video jockey) and spent a few years on red carpets and globe trotting hosting Awards shows. She moved into radio and within a few years went from the graveyard shift, to National Drive and Sydney Breakfast time slots. She's carved out an extraordinary career which she reflects fondly upon and has practically interviewed every celebrity you can think of. On January 1, 2015 Maz decided to experiment with living alcohol-free for 31 days and (six years later) has not had a single drink. During this time she experienced an ‘Aha moment' that ignited a passion to create a platform that helps people redefine their relationships with alcohol and discover true freedom. Join me on today's episode as Maz shares her story on manifesting her dream job (twice) and her newfound passion for helping people redefine their relationship with alcohol, equipping them with better coping strategies, how to effectively handle rejection, rewrite social norms and educate women about the unspoken shame of drinking to cope with life.
