My name is Rebecca LeMasters, I grew up in rural Ohio, and attended technical colleges in SE Ohio for radio and television communication. I have always had the PR bug especially for “The Underdog” type stories. Somehow the advocate in me took over and I entered into a Registered Nursing program. Which led me into working for local Public Health settings and managing a local Homeless Shelter and Domestic Violence Home for women and children. My medical side has never gone too far out of the picture and I also landed in the field of Memory care as the Lead Director of a Dementia Care Unit for residents age 50 and older. This is where I learned I needed to research what the link was / is between Addiction and Alzheimer Disease and TBI seemed to be a big part of that equation. I entered back into KSU at a smaller branch and I transitioned into working inside of an Ohio Treatment Center for Addiction. Which four years later has landed me where I am today working for DreamLife Recovery as Regional Outreach Manager of NE Ohio stretching down to Dayton, Columbus, St. Clairsville, Toledo and branching into bordering states when necessary. I love to travel and learn about different cultures and diversities here in the United States, and it’s a dream to do that all over the world. Until COVID is a thing of the past I’m just happy I’m happy for the outpouring of social media. It’s been a blessing in what I do, and for those trying to reach me for help. I love to host events, especially recovery based. We just put on a Softball tournament “Swing for Recovery, CO-ED teams came from all over Ohio and DreamLife Sponsored. Networking with community leaders is a great way to educate one another on how to better one another and stop the stigma surrounding Addiction and Mental Healthcare. In closing, I am married to someone in long term recovery and I feel it is one of the toughest things a couple can do when combining two different outlooks on Recovery. Thankfully I have had some strong Mentors in my life who have helped me progress in every way. We meet in the middle and keep out all of the unwanted noise and I am very proud to share my success story. Life is one day at a time , but having goals, meeting those goals and allowing people to see the struggle and success that can come with it is my definition of Living in Recovery and hopefully inspiring someone else to live here right beside me! Robb Kelly, PhD - The Recovery Expert - was born in Manchester England. He grew up in a family of musicians and developed a strong love for music at an early age. He was performing on stage at the age of nine. During his early twenties, he worked at the elite and influential Abbey Roads Studio, as a session musician in London. Addiction was always close to his heart as Dr. Kelly was born into a family that had a history of alcoholism. He began drinking and using drugs at an early age, but he managed to stay on a path of success, moving to Oxford in the early 1980’s to pursue a PhD in Psychology at the prestigious University of Oxford. He continued to drink heavily during his time in Oxford – but still managed to complete his Doctorate studies, graduating with a PhD in psychology in 1984. Even though he was a heavy drinker – no one would have predicted, that he would be living on the streets of Manchester, homeless and alone. He recalls the night where he had a staggering revelation when it came to his own alcoholism. It would later coin two of his most popular catch phrases: "The Problem is not our Drinking, it is our Thinking" and "Step out of the Disease, and into the Solution." Dr. Kelly was standing on a street corner one night in Manchester. His body was shaking from alcohol withdrawal, and he stood in front of a liquor store, trembling, desperately waiting for the store to open. He knew that as soon as he drank that first sip of alcohol, he would feel relief. As soon as the liquor store opened, he rushed into the store. The clerk grabbed a bottle of Vodka from the shelf, and placed it in a brown paper bag in front of him. As he lifted the bag in his hands his trembling stopped. His body stopped shaking and his mind rested at ease. He had not even taken that first sip; it was just the promise of alcohol that stopped his shaking and eased his restless mind. THE AH-HA MOMENTThis was the moment that he refers to as his, "Ah-Ha" moment, –and he realized that the problem was not the alcohol, but how he thought about the alcohol. Dr. Kelly would RECOVER from his disease. Living as a RECOVERED alcoholic, he made it his mission and life purpose to help other chronic addicts and alcoholics recover. Dr. Kelly has witnessed the miracle of recovery – he has worked with over five thousand addicts and alcoholics, who appeared just as desperate and hopeless as he did, and he has helped lead them to the solution of permanent recovery. His personal slogan, "Step out of the disease, and into the Solution" was created from his own philosophy of recovery. Robb Kelly contact... When Preston Moore was 12 years old he remembers gathering the All-Star team together before a big game and giving them a pep talk. When he played high school sports he was more of a hype man than a competitive athlete. He pretended to be the mayor in most situations, trying to get in good favor with everyone. On one hand, the ability to connect with people can be attributed to the fact that he is an extreme extrovert. On the other hand, and it took him a long time to see it, it could be due to an immense desire to be liked and people please everyone around him! As far as addiction is concerned, Preston found it difficult to accept the fact that he was a drug addict and alcoholic. He was just doing what everyone else is doing. He would show up to work everyday, pay his own bills, and he was never sloppy or the one causing trouble. If it wasn’t for four arrests in three years, he might still be fighting a battle today. His sobriety date is September 10, 2001, one month after his 21st birthday. Today his entire life revolves around being an advocate for counseling, therapy and support groups like AA, NA, Alanon, ACA and NAMI. He works in outreach for a mental health and addiction hospital, he hosts a podcast called The High Cost of Anonymity and is a speaker, trainer and a coach. “I think the solution to normalizing mental health and addiction is by making coaching, counseling and other mental health and addiction supports as common as going to the gym, hiring a personal trainer or going to a group fitness class.” Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/k.preston.moore Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/543980706306073/?ref=share - Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/high-cost-anonymity-podcast-exploring-cost-keeping/id1357105789 For more information: www.stigmatizedpodcast.com Our Team... Mike Sipple, Jr. is tireless in his quest to be the best leader possible. He is the leader of several organizations and is as busy as any one person can be. There are often not enough hours in the day to get everything done that needs to get done. A big difference with Mike is his concentration on compassion, especially when it comes to mental health. With family history of anxiety and depression coupled with the loss of a dear friend to suicide, Mike and his team make sure to keep mental health at the top of mind when leading. He openly admits that he might work too hard and not take enough time for himself. This is the way he was born and has to manage it the best he can. The team has agreed to take personal days as they see fit and hold each other accountable. Transparency and a “come as you are” outlook is how they choose to operate. Mike is also a leader in the business community and mental health awareness is an initiative that he spearheaded locally. The goal is to get the word out about mental health in business. Everyone deals with mental health challenges no matter if you are at the top of an organization or not. Matt Conway grew up in Ohio and from an early age he admits he was a scared little kid. He started getting praise and attention from older kids and it was something he liked. His behavior became more risky as he got older. By high school he was experimenting with drugs and alcohol. He was a gifted athlete but was unable to stay on the straight and narrow. He started selling marijuana to the kids in his school and realized he was good at it. Matt liked the hustle and lifestyle that came with selling. Pretty soon he started selling other drugs to a wider net of people. He was kicked out of his high school and graduated from a neighboring school. When he got to college, he found a fraternity that he liked. It didn’t take long for him to find a hookup for drugs and pretty soon he was the “go to” guy for pretty much anything that was available. Life would only get more complicated as his selling became more sophisticated and on a higher level. Eventually he would get caught, numerous times and ended up doing time in prison. Today Matt has several years of sobriety and feels blessed to be alive. He has a strong relationship with God and the church and says that this is the main driver behind his new lease on life. Danny Mangulabnan is a friend of 30 years and took some time to join me on the podcast. Danny’s life has been full of ups and downs but his childhood was normal and he was part of a very christian upbringing. School was always tough for Danny and he was kicked out of several times. He said as he went along that it always seemed easier to do bad than to do good. This would be the story for a lot of Danny’s life. He started using hard drugs in high school, he would later quit school which proved to be detrimental. Without the structure of school, Danny found himself running with crowds that liked to do the things that he was interested in. In most cases, this meant doing drugs. Crime soon followed which brought long stretches of jail and prison time. He found God and a 12 step fellowship that has kept him clean for 3 years. Today he is very involved with service work and helping others in need. For more information: www.stigmatizedpodcast.com Our Team... Erin Horn discusses how life was growing up in central Ohio. She recalls a happy and active childhood with her parents and 3 siblings. Like most families, mental health was not discussed. She does realize that most of her family members have experienced depression and anxiety at different times and at different levels of severity. All of Erin’s siblings had an innate drive to do well in whatever they were doing. Inherently, this brings about pressure which can bring on instances of anxiety and depression. She courageously takes us through the story of her youngest brother who passed away from an overdose a few years ago. Looking back on it, she sees that he struggled from an early age. It was hard for the family to spot any problems at the time because mental health was not a topic of proactive discussion or education. Like many kids, Erin’s brother was prescribed pain medication for headaches he was having. Soon he was taking more than he needed because he liked the way the medicine made him feel. This was the beginning of a long struggle with addiction. This is a story of a family’s unwavering love and how they left no stone unturned in order to get him help. Despite having stretches of sobriety and attending great rehab facilities, the disease of addiction took his life. Erin’s passion for mental health awareness really shines through in her work. She joined an organization called 1N5 that works to destigmatize mental health, especially in youth. Scott Robertson joined me on the podcast to discuss mental health in the workplace. Scott is a leader in the business and philanthropic community in Cincinnati as well as nationally. He sits on the board for many organizations but one in particular as it relates to mental health is the Lindner Center of Hope in Cincinnati. He was invited personally by the Lindner family to help join their cause to address mental health in the community and around the world. Scott is a rare individual in that he is very successful in business but also extremely compassionate and educated when it comes to behavioral health. He knows how important it is to open the flood gates around mental health and for us all to participate in open, honest dialogue around this topic so we can work to end the stigma that is associated with it. Mental health in business is rarely talked about but Scott is helping to lead a charge to change that. He wrote an article for the Cincinnati Business Courier in 2019 where he put his flag in the ground as someone who wants to be an advocate for change. We need more leaders like this in the business community to put themselves out there for the greater good. For more information: www.stigmatizedpodcast.com Our Team... Brian McConnell has experienced trauma throughout his life and in this episode he explains how it has shaped him. He talks candidly about growing up in the south and the difficulty in his youth with understanding racism and religion. Navigating life in his early years was difficult as he saw different behavioral challenges within his own family unit. After high school he chose to enter the military, this experience proved to bring about more trauma which he would struggle with for some time. Brian would fight depression and suicidal thoughts for years to come until a friend had the courage to get involved. This interaction encouraged him to seek help from a professional. He has been working on himself ever since. Brian is a father now and is helping his own family navigate the difficulties that life brings. He is thankful that he got help, now he is equipped to assist others in the process of opening up and being vulnerable. For more information: www.stigmatizedpodcast.com Our Team... Samantha (Sam) Arsenault is the Vice President of National Treatment Quality Initiatives for Shatterproof, a national nonprofit dedicated to reversing the addiction crisis in America. In this role, Sam is responsible for the development and implementation of the organization’s programmatic and research priorities to increase the adoption of evidence-based practices by the addiction treatment sector. This includes leading ATLAS, a first of its kind quality measurement system for addiction treatment facilities. ATLAS combines methodologies from existing health care measurement platforms with innovative crowd-sourcing and consumer review approaches to bring transparency to the quality of addiction treatment facilities. The first phase of ATLAS, a $5 million project supported by Arnold Ventures, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and a coalition of health plans, is currently being implemented in six states before phased national expansion. The project has a triple aim of: first, empowering people impacted by substance use disorders to make informed, educated decisions about treatment from a trusted source. Second, creating feedback loops to addiction treatment facilities to inform quality improvement efforts and accelerate the adoption of best practices shown to improve patient outcomes. Third, to equip policymakers, regulators, and payers with information to make data driven policy and payment decisions, such as the allocation of technical assistance dollars and alignment of incentives with the appropriate clinical care. Sam advocates for solutions in the addiction treatment space on national addiction working groups, at conferences and speaking engagements around the country, and in the media. Prior to joining Shatterproof, Sam worked on the Substance Use Prevention and Treatment Initiative at the Pew Charitable Trusts. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics, summa cum laude, and a Master’s Degree in Community Development and Planning both from Clark University. Dr. Mike Kalfas is a trailblazer in the field of addiction medicine and helps thousands of people in their fight against addiction. He is an expert in Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) and loves his work. It didn’t start out like this and certainly wasn’t the plan. Dr. Kalfas always wanted to be a family doctor and treat the families in his community. Pretty soon he found himself sharing office space with the local drug and alcohol unit. Because of a lack of staff, he was politely urged to take a role within that very rehab center. Begrudgingly, he agreed and started seeing patients suffering from addiction. Dr. Kalfas, on some level, was stigmatized like many others and he openly admits that. He felt that he would be working with a population that was breaking the law and they had to face the consequences. It didn’t take long for him to realize that addiction was much more complex than that and also a very “real” thing. He pledged to do anything and everything he could to help and he has been doing so for over 20 years. For more information: www.stigmatizedpodcast.com Our Team... Joycelyn (Joyce) Johnson is an African-American licensed professional counselor in Cincinnati, Ohio. She is the owner of True Calling Counseling & Consulting Services, LLC. After 25 years of working for the Procter & Gamble Corporation, she decided to retire and go back to school full-time to get her Masters in Professional Counseling. Joyce has personally dealt with anxiety, depression, and PTSD which motivated her to study mental health counseling. After receiving her Masters, she opened her own mental health private practice, so that she could begin to more intentionally help people of color (and others) with their own mental health issues. This is her second career, but it is more than that – this is her TRUE CALLING. Her childhood was filled with abuse – sexual, physical, verbal & emotional – which left some very deep wounds that she covered with excelling in school. She received an engineering degree from the University of Illinois @Urbana/Champaign in 1990. More importantly, the childhood abuse left Joyce with the inability to connect with people on any real level because of the shame, guilt, fear, and anger that she felt toward the world. Joyce believes that all of the trauma that she experienced and the awareness & insights that she has gained on her own personal mental health journey - gives her the ability to better connect with people of color, specifically, and others who have experienced trauma to assist them in their unique personal journey toward healing. Joyce identifies as a Christian, African-American, woman, mother, divorcee, former Corporate employee, sister, daughter, and friend which highlights the areas of growth and development in her continuing journey toward wholeness. The one message that she would like everyone to know is to not allow the stigma of seeking help for mental health related issues to prevent you from living your best life. YOU MATTER!!! YOUR MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS!!! For more information: www.stigmatizedpodcast.com Joyce Johnson contact... Martin Warne was born in England where he enjoyed his early years. He moved to the United States at the age of 8 and his life changed. As the new kid in a new school, Martin was bullied. He realized he was gay from a young age but without a good support system, he struggled coming to terms with this fact. Martin tried many different ways to hide his pain and loneliness and he was doing it all alone. In college his mental health started to deteriorate and he began binge eating. Drugs and alcohol soon followed and out of that came an addiction to methamphetamine that would ravage his life. After numerous geographical cures and lost job opportunities, Martin was left homeless and hopeless. It was time for a change. He flew home across the country one last time and made a phone call out of desperation. He was introduced to long term recovery through a 12 step fellowship and sober living. Today he is 4 years sober and works in the field of Peer Support helping others get their lives on the right path. For more information: www.stigmatizedpodcast.com Martin Warne contact... She has a passion for suicide awareness that was sparked by several deaths in her hometown. “In my small community of Columbus, Indiana, we had a series of adolescent suicides. In our initial crisis mode, I rallied our community strengths and resources to start a movement to prevent suicides. We are still working toward this goal together. Since then, I have developed a community-based suicide prevention model that I have spoken about nationally and regionally.” She is the lead researcher of a nationally implemented school-based, peer-to-peer suicide prevention program called Hope Squad. My dear friend Paul Grever tells his story in this episode. Throughout his life he never felt comfortable in his own skin. Suffering in silence, he operated under the strategy “Fake it until you make it”. People pleasing is a common thread between those that suffer with behavioral health challenges. Paul always put the happiness and health of others above his own. He started using drugs and alcohol in high school and it progressed slowly throughout his life. It eventually became unmanageable and he contemplated taking his own life on several occasions. Finally, he was presented with the opportunity of a lifetime. Paul moved out of town and checked in to a treatment facility. This geographical change worked and he is thriving in recovery away from the old people, places and things. Being introduced to opiates at a young age, his life would spiral out of control and ultimately sent him on the run from the police. Scarlet Hudson, affectionately known as “Mama Scar”, is a beacon of hope for thousands of at-risk individuals, mostly women who have been cast aside and living in the darkness of addiction. She was very successful in the corporate world for over 30 years, but she got a calling from God to help those in need. She began driving around at night with simple brown bag meals and gave them to women who lived on the street. Over time she decided to make this her full time mission. She started a non-profit called The Women of Alabaster and it quickly became a safe haven for those in need. It is a faith-based organization that desires to meet the needs of those caught in human trafficking by offering alternatives to a life on the streets. We fulfill our mission by developing relationships; gaining trust as an opportunity to offer support in “off the street” facilities, faith based programs, life skills, and educational opportunities; and sharing and showing them the unconditional love of Jesus Christ. Michael Fehler just celebrated 7 years of sobriety, his recovery started at the young age of 25. In this episode, he talks about how his journey was one he found on his own. There is no blame on any outside influences or factors that led him down his life’s path and where that ultimately took him. Even though he had a good upbringing, addiction still found him. Michael’s story is a great example of the fact that mental health and addiction do not discriminate. For more information: www.stigmatizedpodcast.com Michael Fehler...
