Getting people to think differently when deciding where to travel next is a specialty of the travel journalist Andrew Nelson, a writer for two decades with National Geographic Travel and a two-time Lowell Thomas prize winner. Andrew joins Bruce on the podcast to discuss places in his new National Geographic book, Here Not There, revealing 100 alternative travel destinations to the ones we've probably all heard about 1,000 times. Andrew tells us about the places that are overlooked and why they're worth visiting, in addition to the obvious benefit of often being less crowded and less expensive. He guides us to the Miami of the North, the Amsterdam of the Midwest, and a place he describes as the most accessible yet mysterious places he's ever visited. He'll even tell us where you can dance until dawn and drink (responsibly) like a fool. Andrew doesn't just list places in this Travel That Matters episode, but tells us about the history, the tours and events you can attend, and the food that's there for you to enjoy. He emphasizes the element of surprise in travel, while adding in bragging rights that come with being among the few who have traveled to some of these alternative destinations. --- You can find out more details about the locations below mentioned in the episode: Zozobra Festival: https://burnzozobra.com/ The Secret Stairs of Los Angeles https://secretstairs-la.com/ San Cassiano, Dolomites https://www.altabadia.org/en/italian-alps-dolomites/villages/san-cassiano.html Kotor, Montenegro https://www.turismomontenegro.es/ciudades-de-montenegro/kotor/ Alamos, Sonora https://www.gob.mx/sectur/articulos/alamos-sonora Bottleworks Hotel: https://www.bottleworkshotel.com/ --- To learn more about Andrew Nelson, check out his website https://andrewtnelson.com/ --- Travel That Matters is a CurtCo Media production. MAY 2023Spring has arrived in Manchester, bringing with it a mix of blossoming flowers and seasonal allergies. Despite the sniffles, I'm enjoying settling into a good routine and discovering all that Manchester has to offer. This month, I felt very near to the King's Coronation on May 6th and celebrated with the locals. I also visited the John Rylands Library (like being in a Harry Potter movie) and explored the Castlefield Viaduct, marveling at its impressive architecture. Robb Kelly, PhD – The Recovery Expert – was born in Manchester England. He grew up in a family of musicians and developed a strong love for music at an early age. He was performing on stage at the age of nine. During his early twenties, he worked at the legendary Abbey Roads Studio, as a session musician in London.Addiction was always close to his heart as Dr. Kelly was born into a family that had a history of alcoholism. He began drinking and using drugs at an early age, but he managed to stay on a path of success, moving to Oxford in the early 1980's to pursue a PhD in Psychology at the prestigious University of Oxford. He continued to drink heavily during his time in Oxford – but still managed to complete his Doctorate studies, graduating with a PhD in psychology in 1984.Even though he was a heavy drinker – no one would have predicted, that he would be living on the streets of Manchester, homeless and alone. He recalls the night where he had a staggering revelation when it came to his own alcoholism. It would later coin two of his most popular catch phrases: “The Problem is not our Drinking, it is our Thinking” and “Step out of the Disease, and into the Solution.”Dr. Kelly was standing on a street corner one night in Manchester. His body was shaking from alcohol withdrawal, and he stood in front of a liquor store, trembling, desperately waiting for the store to open. He knew that as soon as he drank that first sip of alcohol, he would feel relief. As soon as the liquor store opened, he rushed into the store. The clerk grabbed a bottle of Vodka from the shelf, and placed it in a brown paper bag in front of him. As he lifted the bag in his hands his trembling stopped. His body stopped shaking and his mind rested at ease. He had not even taken that first sip; it was just the promise of alcohol that stopped his shaking and eased his restless mind.Today, Robb Kelly, PhD is a world-renowned addiction expert who believes in treating the problem, not the symptoms. He has worked for many years helping addicts and alcoholics to Recover their lives from the disease of addiction. Based on his own experiences working with addicts and alcoholics over the last 20 years, combined with a PhD in psychology, and as a recovered alcoholic himself – he is a triple threat against the disease of addiction. Dr. Kelly's philosophy may seem unconventional and unorthodox. But, they are based on extensive research and behavior studies that he conducted over the last 20 years. He pulls the disease out of his clients and empowers them to fight their disease head on.Robb Kelly, PhD has worked with thousands of people including celebrities of film, music, and sports. He has lectured at many high profile universities and hospitals on the subject of addiction, and is recognized as a leading authority on addiction recovery methods that are changing lives all around the world.Find all Robb's work herehttps://robbkelly.com/Support the showYour host is Laban Ditchburn aka "World's Best Courage Coach".Have you read Laban's book? This month for the album spotlight Danny takes us to the year 1987 for the brilliant debut album "It's Better To Travel" by the Manchester England band Swing Out Sister.Although Swing Out Sister are currently a duo, they began as a trio in the UK. The group was formed by Andy Connell (keyboards) and Martin Jackson (drums); they were later joined by Corinne Drewery (vocals). According to the group's website, "They christened themselves after an obscure Billie Burke "B"-musical from the '40s [a 1945 movie starring Arthur Treacher, called Swing Out, Sister] because it was the only name they could agree upon - they all agreed they hated it." Both Connell and Jackson had been playing in other bands prior to forming SOS, while Drewery was a fashion designer and model before she became the band's lead vocalist. 52nd Street's Diane Charlemagne was influential in the period just prior to the band signing to Phonogram Records. Connell and Jackson, outside of their usual roles as Manchester musicians in A Certain Ratio and Magazine, were producing Electro tracks for Morgan Khan's Streetwise label with a degree of underground success. This activity triggered interest from a few major labels including Phonogram/Mercury Records. Vocalised songs were asked for, so Connell, who knew Charlemagne through Factory Records, approached her to sing on the Phonogram demos. These demos helped secure Connell and Jackson's major label contract. This was the period in which 52nd Street moved from Factory Records to Virgin Records and as a result, Diane Charlemagne's Swing Out Sister involvement ended. Beginnings and debut album: It's Better to Travel (1985–1987)Together with their producer, Paul Staveley O'Duffy, they signed with Mercury Records. Before their first album, they released the single "Blue Mood" in the UK in November 1985. However, it did not chart. In late 1986, the single "Breakout" was released. It reached the number four position on the UK Singles Chart in November 1986, and number six on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States in November 1987. When they released their debut album, It's Better to Travel, on 11 May 1987, it reached number one on the UK Albums Chart. The album blended real horns, synths (arranged subtly, to sound like strings), drums, and xylophones, scored by producer/arranger Richard Niles. The follow-up single to "Breakout" was "Surrender", which featured a trumpet solo performed by John Thirkell. It rose to number seven on the UK charts in January 1987. The next single was the more serious and jazzy "Twilight World". This song was the subject of many remixes and was a dance club favourite worldwide. The final single, "Fooled By a Smile", returned to the upbeat pop orientation characteristic of "Breakout".The group were subsequently nominated for two Grammy Awards in 1988: Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Group or Duo ("Breakout").In addition to long-time partner O'Duffy as well as Thirkell, Swing Out Sister have also enlisted the talents of saxophonist Gary Barnacle (who with Thirkell also comprise the Phantom Horns known for their work with Level 42); percussionist Luis Jardim; guitarist Tim Cansfield; trumpet/fluegelhorn master Jerry Hey; and songwriter-arranger Jimmy Webb.Complete Setlist- 3/7/23BreakoutTwilight WorldAfter HoursBlue MoodSurrenderFooled By A SmileCommunionIt's Not EnoughIt's Better To TravelRecorded live at the She Shack Studio on March 7th 2023.© Copyright Danny Diess

Joshi Herrmann is the founder of The Mill, a newsletter focused on Manchester – England, not New Hampshire, for those who call it “soccer” – as well as sister publications in Sheffield and Liverpool. Joshi started The Mill in June 2020, and across the three newsletters, the company has 45,000 email subscribers and has converted over 7% to paid subscribers. The Sheffield Post has 12,000 email subscribers and has managed to convert an impressive 950 to paid, according to Joshi. The company is near profitability with a small full-time staff augmented with freelancers. The common knock on the newsletter model applied to local journalism is that it can't scratch much beyond the surface, and it tends to be mostly aggregation of original reporting still done by local newspapers, however depleted they are. The Mill and its sister titles are leaning on original reporting and in-depth features as opposed to just aggregation or fluff about local events.

Robb Kelly, PhD – The Recovery Expert – was born in Manchester England. He grew up in a family of musicians and developed a strong love for music at an early age. He was performing on stage at the age of nine. During his early twenties, he worked at the elite and influential Abbey Roads Studio, as a session musician in London. Addiction was always close to his heart as Dr. Kelly was born into a family that had a history of alcoholism. He began drinking and using drugs at an early age, but he managed to stay on a path of success, moving to Oxford in the early 1980's to pursue a PhD in Psychology at the prestigious University of Oxford. He continued to drink heavily during his time in Oxford – but still managed to complete his Doctorate studies, graduating with a PhD in psychology in 1984. Even though he was a heavy drinker – no one would have predicted, that he would be living on the streets of Manchester, homeless and alone. He recalls the night where he had a staggering revelation when it came to his own alcoholism. It would later coin two of his most popular catch phrases: “The Problem is not our Drinking, it is our Thinking” and “Step out of the Disease, and into the Solution.” Dr. He had not even taken that first sip; it was just the promise of alcohol that stopped his shaking and eased his restless mind.Support Dismantled Life: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/DismantledlifeSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Today's episode is one of the most brutal we have covered, it is uncomfortable to listen to, but the topic is SO important and dear to both Lisa & I. Kelly Ann Bates was a young girl growing up outside Manchester England when she was swept off her feet by her first love. But as secrets and lies come to light, and bruises start to be seen, the story takes a dark and horrific turn when her boyfriend turns himself in for accidentally killing Kelly during 'physical' displays of their love. When you hear Dr. Robb you cant help but be lifted up ! Today on the show he shares his story that lead him to losing everything from his business, his wife, his children and being homeless on the streets of Manchester England for over a year . On a cold and wet English night, he fell to my knees and begged God to help him find a way from the endless nightmare that was his existence and moments later a man carrying a bible rounded the corner and offered me a helping hand. His story is remarkable. His level of commitment and compassion to help others who are struggling with addictions is tremendous. He does not mince words. He had me laughing. He had me crying. He challenges us all. And left me knowing that if we can help others have a better tomorrow than today , then we should do it. You can find Dr. Robb Kelly on his site here. In this episode Dr. Robb Kelly shares insights from his work and from his own personal experience about the realities of struggling with addiction. His uncle gave him his first drink when he was just nine years old. When I asked him how he defined addiction he said it was “a mental obsession with an aspect of physicality.” An obsession that addicts will pursue to the detriment of the things and people they value in their lives. You may not be struggling with addiction but find yourself unable to break the trauma cycle that is causing you unnecessary pain and despair. During our conversation Dr. Kelly Shared the root causes of addiction and detrimental behavior cycles, as well as what perpetuates them. Conversely, what are the attitudes and behaviors that are the antidote to addiction? How can we move from an inward focus and pain, to forming connections that allow us to contribute to others, discovering our own value in the process?
