Nick Stone is a Lead Director and Board Member for Wilderness. Known for its once-in-a-lifetime safari experiences, Wilderness was founded in Botswana in 1983 with the goal of introducing visitors to the country's natural beauty while protecting the environment and providing local jobs. Today, the company has more than six million acres of land under its stewardship and provides an economic support system for the communities where it operates, creating durable, well-paying jobs for roughly 2,600 people from more than 20 different ethnic groups and supporting local farming and infrastructure. Nick is also a board member of LedderTech and Kelvin Inc. For his day job, Nick is a Partner at FS Investors, a private investment entity with long-term capital. Nick graduated cum laude from Harvard and was an Arjay Miller Scholar at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. In this episode, we discuss: ● How combining tourism with conservation is changing the economic model for protecting nature ● How expansive wilderness can be a catalyst for deepening interpersonal connection ● The outsized influence of company culture in setting the trajectory of a business Key Takeaways: ● There's an elusive quality to the energy a place holds. Anyone who's attempted to capture a sunset in a photograph understands how it pales in comparison to the real thing. It's a mere two-dimensional representation of an experience that's inherently three-dimensional and engages all five senses. Nick mentioned the difficulty of articulating the essence of a journey with Wilderness, and I can't help but think there's a similar challenge at play here. How do you convey the profound experience of venturing into the unspoiled wilderness, where the world still echoes with the rhythms of millennia, when our daily lives have drifted so far from that primal connection? It's akin to stepping back in time, immersing oneself in a natural equilibrium unlike anything we're accustomed to today. ● Exposure to different cultures is a transformative journey of self-discovery. As we engage with diverse customs, beliefs, and perspectives, we gain valuable insights into the human experience, fostering a deeper awareness of our own values and biases. Through these experiences, we become not only more culturally sensitive but also more compassionate and empathetic individuals, contributing to a more harmonious and interconnected world. ● The tragedy of the commons occurs when individuals, acting in their self-interest, deplete shared resources. It's a collective action problem that often arises with public goods - like open wilderness - where individuals have an incentive to exploit the resource to their own advantage. We see this with deforestation across nations, overfishing the oceans, and the shrinking African wilderness. The business model Wilderness has created develops a more attractive alternative to the tragedy of the commons by using the natural resources of the African wilderness to educate on the importance of conservation, to earn funds necessary to support the conservation of the land, and to increase economic opportunity for local communities through well-paying jobs. Where else can we change the economic model away from the tragedy of the commons—which in the short term profits a few—to a model that values community building, increased access and education, and protecting resources for generations to come? In this podcast we talk about the challenge and opportunities of reforming the UK rail network and specifically ask how this vast and complex national asset can be effectively and successfully transitioned back under public sector control and management.A bit of background: In May 2021 the Williams/Shapps Plan for Rail set out the government's plan for transformation. In short, the plan will see control of the rail network, trains and operations passed from the current fragmented and largely private sector run ownership to a new, public body, known as Great British Railways. This will own the infrastructure, receive the fare revenue, run and plan the network and set most fares and timetables. Network Rail, the current infrastructure owner, will be absorbed into this new organisation, as will many functions from the Rail Delivery Group and Department for Transport. It has been described as one of the most ambitious changes to our railways in a generation. While no longer in control, the private sector will remain critical to asset management and operations and incentivised to “run safe, high-quality, punctual services, manage costs, attract more passengers and innovate”.The Great British Railways Transition Team, is now preparing the ground, and working with government to change the culture and approach to rail investment from the centre and, as they put it “getting the whole railway thinking commercially through reform”. The challenge is to embrace this new way of working and bring Great British Railways into being by autumn 2024.It's a huge task. And to discuss challenges that lie ahead, my guest today is Anit Chandarana, Lead Director at the GBR Transition Team, the man very much in the hot seat when it comes to leading those vital changes.ResourcesWilliams/Shapps Plan for RailGreat British Rail Transition Team websiteDepartment for TransportOffice for Rail and Road Network Rail

It is becoming increasingly clear to the brands in this industry – just as it has to those in many others – that comms can raise awareness and even drive bottom-line results as nothing else can. And sometimes, divine inspiration can help. Any doubts? They will be erased by this podcast. Featuring:-Jennifer Kamienski, EVP, Coyne PR-Denny Marie Post, Co-President of Nextbite, Lead Director at Vital Farms and Bluestone Lane, Board Member of Travel + Leisure, Libbey Glass and P.F. Chang's “PR allows you to punch above your weight class as a brand,” says Nextbite's Denny Marie-Post, who is also a former CEO of Red Robin. Its unique ability to tell an experiential story better than any other discipline is a key reason. It also helps that comms pros in the space have proved incredibly adaptable. As Coyne's Jennifer Kamienski explains to PRWeek's Gideon Fidelzeid, the incredible impact the pandemic had on the sector necessitated such flexibility.“It's not just about the food in the restaurant space,” she asserts. “It's about appealing to all five senses. It's about the overall experience.” And she proudly discusses numerous examples of how PR pros in the sector have gotten creative with the reality that people are increasingly accessing restaurant food off-premises.That creativity can also be so simple sometimes. Case in point, a 2015 Red Robin campaign on which Post and Kamienski collaborated. It involved a new fish sandwich, Lent, and an invitation hand delivered to the Vatican for Pope Francis. Check out this podcast to learn more about this inspired initiative.Follow us on Twitter: @PRWeekUSwww.prweek.com

In this episode, which is hopefully the first of many, we talk about how a strong director's concept of a well-known play can breathe new life into it and reveal themes and aspects of the play that were previously unnoticed or unexplored. And how you can even do this without changing a single word of the script. We're calling this "When the Production is the Adaptation." We're beginning with Sam Hull's 2003 post-apocalyptic, punk goth production of Arthur Miller's The Crucible. Yes, you read that right. In this episode, Sam reveals:How he even came up with a post-apocalyptic, punk goth Crucible and why he thought a small, Catholic, liberal arts college in rural Minnesota was a great place to mount it.
