#54 Davey Du Plessis|English| Veganism, surviving & seeing life from a different perspective

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 31, 2020 68:40

Episode #54 Davey Du Plessis|English| Veganism, surviving & seeing life from a different perspective How did this podcast happen? One, I did a podcast with a 50-year old gay Afrikaans recovering addict called Freddie (ep #4) whom now is one of my best friends. A year later I asked all my former podcast guests to hook me up with someone interesting. Freddie introduced me to Chris Barnard Hospital's trauma surgeon Dr Denis (ep #33). Denis in turn got me in touch with trauma counselor Robyn (ep #48) who in turn introduced me to her son Davey (ep#54). Davey was, and still is, a young adventurer whom in 2012 during his solo crossing of the Amazon river was ambushed on his kayak and shot 5 times. Through a sequence of events he survived and continued his life as a adventurer. Check him out at http://www.daveyduplessis.com/ As an interviewer, I want to make the make the conversation with the guests as stimulating as possible not only for the listener but also the interviewee. A lot of times this means to step away from previous asked questions and to try and find a different side to the person by asking them things they have not yet been asked in order to gain experience from their whole being in a way where they enjoy talking. To hear about Davey's horrendous Amazon experience, please read his book http://www.daveyduplessis.com/buy-the-book/ watch his seminar on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7Oztg_F9AU or listen to other podcasts such as WORDS WORDS SPEAK https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpegF5xkr-g. I went more into what makes him tick, how nature and nurture played roles in his mentality, and, how veganism changed his life and what we non-vegans can consider. Luckily at the end he acknowledged the refreshing approach which is a high-note for me to finish my podcast while I immigrate and consider if I want to continue. Davey was a tough nut to crack and by the second half we really got going and talked long after the podcast finished. I am very grateful for him meeting me - a complete stranger and someone he didn't know until our Skype session started on this evening - and sharing his life experience very honestly. I learned a lot from his thoughts and although not converting me, he actually made me appreciate a new perspective to life i.e. veganism.

TO PODCAST #53 Derrick Jenson |English| Author, Philosopher & Radical Environmentalist How did I get to have this chat? I asked my friend and fellow podcaster Freddie Van Rensburg (Meet me in the Field podcast) to hook me up with people whom I will have a nice chat. He referred me to Dr. Denis (Ep#33). Denis hooked me up with trauma counselor Robyn (Ep#48) whom in turn hooked me up with Derrick. When I researched Derrick, this is what his website said: Derrick Jensen is hailed as the philosopher poet of the environmental movement. Learn about Deep Green Resistance & his other anti-civilization works. https://derrickjensen.org/ I was instantly intrigued. This podcast, and its the research that went into prepping it, helped me to start thinking about life and the way we interact with it in a different way. If you are like me and not 100% sure you are living the way you should or could, take a listen to not only this podcast but many of the others that Derrick has done (other podcasters) and is doing (Resistance Radio) https://deepgreenresistance.blogspot.com/p/derrick-jensen-resistance-radio-archives.html

Ep #52 Truchen Vorndran |Afrikaans| Teaching English in Korea As jy 'n onderwyser in Korea was, is dit maybe 'n walk down memory lane vir jou.

During her studies to become a part-time waitress, I heard she is about to fly out to Italy for three months to work as a model. I instantly thought 'why the hell would you continue to study to be a waitress'. She finished the course - which I probably would not have if I heard I am working internationally as a model; plus; waiters are not treated all that well in SA - and showed a resilience, desire and humility during the training. These hardworking qualities are rare not only in humans but especially younger people. When hearing she used to do MMA - mixed martial arts - I really got curious to see who the person is behind the 'plain / rebel' looking image. Our conversation almost went two hours where we talked about: 1) How she became a model 2) What to expect when you are a model 3) Her tertiary degree from TUKS in Information Science 4) Healthy lifestyle & nutrition 5) Her MMA 'career; 6) Working abroad 7) We analysed/ discussed 10 pictures from her career 8) Social Media 9) Modelling agencies 10) Being a professional model FOLLOW ME aka Talking Orangutans Podcast INSTAGRAM https://www.instagram.com/talkingorangutans/ FACEBOOK https://www.facebook.com/talkingorangutanspodcast WATCH ON YOUTUBE CHANNEL https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLWJDEk2aNGfqBYbc5InLyA LISTEN TO: STITCHER https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/anchor-podcasts/talking-orangutans-podcast APPLE PODCASTS https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/talking-orangutans-podcast/id1460575770 SPOTIFY https://open.spotify.com/show/1ysF7a3nH1A4sb5Y3JCdp5 CAST BOX https://castbox.fm/channel/Talking-Orangutans-Podcast-id2133608?country=us ANCHOR FM https://anchor.fm/talkingorangutans BREAKER https://www.breaker.audio/talking-orangutans-podcast GOOGLE PODCASTS https://podcasts.google.com/?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy9hYTFmMzI0L3BvZGNhc3QvcnNz OVERCAST https://overcast.fm/itunes1460575770/talking-orangutans-podcast POCKET CASTS https://pca.st/A4J9 RADIO REPUBLIC https://radiopublic.com/talking-orangutans-podcast-6V5BnM

Son Surf as an added dimension of being a Christian based surf school. As I understand it, it is an added element that can be discussed or enjoyed if that was your desire. Otherwise, surfs up!! I met Mik through my wife whom I bought 5 surf lessons as a Christmas gift 3 or 4 years ago. If it were not for Mik and the way he does his classes, I am not sure my wife would be a 'surfer' right now. He somehow managed to provide a learning environment which 1) got my wife to stand on her board and surf on day one 2) wanted her to do it again 3) pushed her to go outside her comfort zone 4) feel comfortable where she was operating and 5) made a surfer out of her. In the process she has gained a women's group of surfer that attempts to paddle out together weekly. The vibe I get is a school with no ego, a desire to have a positive influence on others be it through a break from life through being in the waves, or a safe space for people with a spiritual desire. This conversation was to meet the guy who helped do the above mentioned and see who he is and what makes him tick. In the process he liked it so much he has been living there for over 12 years - periodically coming home for visits. #20 Leslie - Dog Expert/ German Shepherds [English] Leslie and I stay on the same farm in Stellenbosch. She has been my go-to person for any dog related issues over the last 4 years. Like most humble people, she happily refers me to other people in case I ask her something she does not feel 100% sure about - which is very rarely. She helped me see dogs more as members of your family as opposed to a 'pet' i.e. creature around your house. She grew up with German Shepherds which makes her an expert in my opinion. This podcast is dedicated to educating dog owners upon the basics needed to understand, raise and enjoy your dog. If you have questions or are unsure, please comment on Youtube under the video and I will discuss them on a follow-up podcast with either Leslie or Horse Vet Monty. BACKGROUND: I know Andre via the usual 'everyone in Stellenbosch knows everyone'. I really got to know him 4 years ago through downhill mountain biking. He undertook a journey to Namibia by himself which I have always had much appreciation for. He does a lot of semi extreme activities by himself which is very different from normal people. I admire this. I wanted to talk to him about the mental and spiritual journey in deciding why to go no this journey, how to prepare, what you experience along the way and interesting stories during the trip. EPISODE #14 with ERIC PALMER www.instagram.com/afreakineric I met Eric in High School @ Paul Roos Gimnasium. I know of him due to my younger brother Johan being into skating and also the fact that everyone in Stellies know each other. Eric was known to me as a rollerblader and early on I knew of his photography. In adulthood about 15 years after school I got reacquainted with Eric due to a mutual friend called Koos - whom introduced met to the world of downhill mountain biking, jumps, concussions and broken bones :) By this time, Eric got very successful in Action Sports photography. He not only took photos of riders we watched in DVDs, YouTube and videos; he hanged out with them and knew their personalities. He got to see how they build and prepare for events and specific tricks. Unreal. I talked to him about the how he got into photography, what he aims to capture in his pics, Dark Fest, Night Harvest, Trails Crew, Politics in the industry, seeing bails & fails, who is underrated in SA and who deserves more credit and much more. Welcome everyone. I give a quick rundown of what this podcast is about, who I am, and why I started this. In short, due to too many concussions, I can't do a lot of sport. Combine that with spinal injuries, I am quite limited. Podcasts helped me greatly to improve myself and get a different perspective on life and many things. It is not always possible to meet people with the stories you need to hear. But podcasts make it possible. I wanted to join this as I am in an unique position where I meet a lot of interesting and inspiring people.
