The Eating Disorder Therapist
Eating Disorder Recovery, A Cancer Diagnosis and Finding Greater Meaning and Purpose, with Cindy Spratt

The Eating Disorder Therapist

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 27, 2024 30:49

Today I'm talking to Cindy Spratt, who's a holistic & functional nutritionist that specialises in eating disorder recovery. Cindy speaks about an all-encompassing approach that teaches fundamentals of nutrition, listening to the body, learning how to respect and love the body, and rebuilding a loving and joyful relationship with food, so that people can thrive long term and feel good about food and in their body. Cindy has been on her own healing journey. As a young girl she loved being in the kitchen and creating and connecting through food. Her first job was at a local tea house, aged 11, and with a local catering company soon after. Throughout her teenage years, however, Cindy's relationship with food morphed into something different. She spent almost a decade as a competitive gymnast, where weight and body image were of heightened focus. When the time came to step away from gymnastics, the drastic drop in exercise, along with puberty and the complex mental/emotional challenges of adolescence, her once loving, and rather normal relationship with food, was replaced by something deeply dysfunctional. From Cindy's teens well into her twenties, her food journey became her biggest struggle. She found herself in the throes of bingeing and purging, starving, dieting, over-exercising, and popping pills. She describes the shame and guilt that engulfed her during those years as devastating, and the loneliness, unbearable. In her mid-twenties, Cindy came to the realisation that her health was suffering, that there was more to her than an eating disorder, and more to this life than struggle. Determined to find a way to bring back her love of food and turn her life's journey into something positive, she aligned herself to a new path and began to look to the health world for guidance. And then…Cindy's life was turned upside down At 32, as a young wife and mother, and well on her way to being fully recovered from the eating disorder, doctors found a cancerous tumor in her colon. She endured a life altering colon resection and was advised to endure several rounds of chemo. Opting out of chemo, Cindy set out to up her health game. She went back to school, turned to exercise for therapy, and opened up her spirit to life's teachings. What she found was a calling: to help others find their own positive food journey and to be the help she didn't have when she was younger. Since then, Cindy has spent years in school becoming a nutritional enthusiast, a kitchen muse, and a food and body advocate, receiving certifications in Holistic Nutrition, Functional Nutrition, Culinary Nutrition, Eating Psychology, and Eating Disorder Recovery Coaching. Her kitchen is now a joyful and creative space, once again. She has learned how to listen to her body, reuniting it with athleticism, dance, and the wondrous outdoors. Cindy's life story with food has taught her endless lessons: to embrace every moment with gratitude and compassion, to listen to life's teachings, and that believing in oneself is half the battle. She hopes to pass this along to others. In the episode today, Cindy explores her healing journey with food, and the ups and downs along this tumultuous path. She talks about getting started in recovery with nutrition and also shares some of her best tips for addressing psychology and a bigger picture of recovery. It's an inspiring episode and I hope that you enjoy it. Her experience began with a love of food which led her to pursue a degree in Culinary Arts from Johnson & Wales University. As her love of science and helping people wove with that initial path, she continued on to a Bachelor of Science in Culinary Nutrition with a dual concentration in clinical dietetics and culinary food science. From there, her background spanned diverse roles across the food, nutrition, and healthcare sectors as she went on to ground in medical nutrition therapy.    Kymber is especially passionate about disordered eating management and prevention. In this vein, she focuses on educating clients about the multi-faceted ways history, marketing, food systems, culture, psychology, and body image affect health and relationships to nutrition, food, and body. She works with clients to restore & build their relationship with food, acknowledging not only its nourishing properties, but truly embracing its comforts, tradition, and fun! Kymber is a strong believer in a whole person approach, embracing integrated body image counseling which often goes far deeper than simply body or image.    Working in a client-guided manner and Health at Every Size-informed, she strives to help each unique person reach their idea of peace and satisfaction in their bodies and their overall lives. My guest this week is Meghan Telpner, a Toronto based author, nutritionist and Founder of the Academy of Culinary Nutrition. She has written two best selling books (both of which I have) and she is really a leader in a global community of culinary nutrition experts.  Today Meghan and I are talking all about heart coherence:  what it is, how it came into Meghan's life, and how she is using it to impact the lives of her community and beyond. Her journey to hear coherence is really a powerful one. We are living in a time where resilience is low, tensions are high and patience is in the gutters. This topic and technique has the ability to change your brain and assist in better emotional regulation, lower stress levels, less reactivity, better cognitive function and deeper sleep — without needing to sit in meditation for extended periods of time.  Meghan shares how you can experience the positive effects in as little as 30 seconds.  And you already have everything you need RIGHT NOW to practice heart coherence ... she even walks you through the technique so that you can begin to integrate this into your life right now.  There are so many humans in a frozen state of fear right now. This is a time when inner harmony is so needed -  I truly believe that the information that Meghan shares on this podcast can truly be life-changing for many.  In this episode: Heart coherence: what it is, and how it came into Meghan's life How to practice heart coherence – a step-by-step instruction. The research behind tapping into the power and the energetics of the heart.  Meghan has noticed that the way she interacts with others is now very grounded, softer and more genuine ever since she has integrated an ongoing practice of heart coherence into her life. When we know that happiness comes from within, we are secure.  Find joy in your life. Meghan challenges us all to write down 5 things that brought us joy at the end of the day.    Key quotes from Meghan Telpner: “By your own breathing and focus, you can bring your whole being to harmony where everything can function optionally.” “Everyone needs to be in coherence.” “If you can get into a coherence state, you are helping everyone around you.” “Love, care, gratitude, and appreciation are the heart centered emotions.” “Breathe in through the heart, out through the heart, and embody the emotions of love.” “When we start to think about how we communicate via the heart, it changes the way that we go out into the world.” “You can become a magnetic leader.” “Compassion is the title wave emotion of humanity, but you cannot get there when you are in fear.” “What we expose ourselves to is what we will become cemented in.” “You need to cut off exposure to the things that trigger your fear.”   Take Dr. Laura's Free Quiz! — What's your Divine Feminine Sovereign Style?
