In 2003, Dennis R. MacDonald published an important monograph with Yale University Press entitled: Does the New Testament Imitate Homer? Four Cases from the Acts of the Apostles. In the provocative opening salvo, MacDonald explains: ‘"'Who would claim that the writing of prose is not reliant on the Homeric poems?' This rhetorical question by a teacher of rhetoric requires a negative answer: no ancient intellectual would have doubted that the Iliad and the Odyssey informed the composition of prose, including potentially the stories of the New Testament." Come along this week as Jeff and Dave tackle the big questions about the form-criticism take on the New Testament vs. imitation (μίμησις). MacDonald lays out his six criteria, and we get into the nit and grit of some first century compositional realities. Is MacDonald's thesis ultimately persuaive? Did Luke in Acts imitate Vergil, Homer, neither, or something else altogether? It's a complicated topic, for sure, with a long and thus far intractable history.

Where to begin? (No really, what date is this film even taking place in?) Ridley Scott returns us to his vision of ancient Rome that was laid out over twenty years ago. While we do see a lot of new faces in the Eternal City, the overall story is wrapped up in its mythologizing of the original. Joining the crew is a very special guest (and Maximus/mentor figure to two of your hosts), Dr. Glenn Storey to discuss this Hollywood take on the Roman Empire. From ships and sharks in the Colosseum to a slightly morbid excerpt from Vergil written on a child's bedroom wall, there are quite a few moments that give us pause. Looking beyond the little inaccuracies that feel designed to troll ancient scholars (Persians vs. Trojans at the Battle of Salamis?), we focus on what the film is trying to reflect about our own modern society. And what we see is a lot scarier than the CGI baboons.

Rives returns with Insider Dan Rafael of his Fight Freaks Unite substack/newsletter and BigFightWeekend.com to cover it all.Was Ortiz's narrow decision win over Serhii Bohachuck in a 12 round slugfest in the Golden Boy main event one of the fights of the year? It certainly looks like it, as Dan has more on how Vergil got off the ground not once but twice and still won. And, what happens for him next at 154 lb. now that he's the interim WBC champ? Then, we get to Leo's KO of Luis Alberto Lopez in the Top Rank/ESPN main event in Leo's hometown in New Mexico. HIs devastating left hook KO of the IBF featherweight champ, certainly has to be considered for knockout of the year, as Lopez remained motionless on the ground for several seconds and was counted out. Ismael Barroso is the old man we all want! This weekend, he took on Ohara Davies and put him away in the first round. He reminded everyone that he may be 40, ancient in the sport of boxing, but he's got the mythical old man strength. With the win, Ismael Barroso captured the interim WBA World Super Lightweight title and possibly a rematch with Rolando Romero. Of course that is possibly up to whatever Ryan Garcia decides to do. Regardless, Ismael Barroso had a spectacular performance and it was fantastic to see. In the main event, we had Vergil Oritz returning, this time at 156 against Fredrick Lawson. It showed us that not all first round knockouts were created equal and his was disappointing. After hurting Fredrick Lawson, Vergil Ortiz pounced on Lawson and referee Tony Weeks called the fight off. Fair or foul? Weeks responded on social media that he saw that Fredrick Lawson had two scans tell them he had a brain aneurysm. Then a third doc was brought in to change all that. Now we're looking down the barrel of Vergil Ortiz vs. Tim Tzyu, and that's a fight we all can appreciate. What did you think of Vergil Ortiz and Ismael Barroso on DAZN? In The Greek State, Friedrich Nietzsche argues that the Greek polis existed in order to hold the many in slavery so that the Olympian few could give birth to the beautiful Helen known as Greek culture, and that the Greek state had to be periodically renewed by war so that it could continue to create geniuses.
