Two years after its onset, the world's response to the COVID-19 Pandemic will be generational event studied for years. It is a reminder that tail risk events happen more frequently than we think. Pandemics have been a feature (not a bug?) throughout the American experience. POLLY PRICE's new book sheds light on the US government's response to epidemics throughout history- with larger conclusions about COVID-19 and reforms needed for the next plague. Polly J. Price is the Asa Griggs Candler Professor of Law and is also Professor of Global Health in the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University. A public health law scholar as well as a legal historian and citizenship and immigration law expert, she has published, lectured, and taught widely about immigration and citizenship, public health law and regulatory policy, federalism, property rights, and the judiciary. KQuick explains how to become a successful music producer, going from selling $20 an hour studio time in his dorm room to 2x Platinum/Grammy Nominated record producer, working with major artists like Chris Brown, Nelly, Jeremih. KQuick's Bio: Kaleb “KQuick” Rollins is a Multi-Platinum Grammy-nominated songwriter/producer/engineer raised in the Roxbury section of Boston, Massachusetts who currently resides in New York City, USA. KQuick discovered his affinity for music at the young age of 14. Under the mentorship of renowned producer/artist Ryan Leslie, he honed his skills as a producer and a songwriter, landing placements on a Grammy Nominated album while in college. After graduating from New York University’s Clive Davis Institute Of Recorded Music, KQuick has worked with artists including Chris Brown, J Cole, Nelly, Jeremih, Alessia Cara, Queen Naija and Bas. He has also written and produced songs for numerous placements in film and television, including scoring a Sundance Film Festival short film selection. Now signed with Sony ATV as a writer and producer alongside his business partner Marc Soto as production-duo/band ClickNPress, KQuick is busy developing a sound for the current and next generation of music creatives. High Level Discussion Flow: K Quick’s Origin Story Making Music Your Career You’re “in” the Music Biz - Now What? Behind The Music Biz - Major Labels + Technology Disruption Building a Brand (as a producer) Important Links: KQuick - Instagram KQuick - Twitter Musicians in Tech - Instagram Musicians in Tech - Twitter Musicians in Tech - LinkedIn KQuick's Baseball Card Stats: Singer/Songwriter/Producer/Engineer/Musician - how many instruments do you play? Video Director / Producer Signed to Sony-ATV Publishing - writer/producer Credits: Chris Brown J Cole Ryan Leslie Nelly Jeremih TV / Film Gaetano's Music Jay Lex's Music Important Takeaways: KQuick started producing with Fruity Loops in high school and learned the basics of live sound engineering in church. This was when he knew he wanted to do music for the rest of his life. KQuick says that going to school for music gave him a leg up on the competition because it taught him the mechanics and technical skills. He says you don’t need a degree to make it in the music business, but if you can afford the risk, it’s definitely worth it. KQuick says he never had a real “9 to 5” When he was at NYU he started hustling by building a small little studio and selling studio time in his dorm room for $20 an hour. He was 17 when he stopped selling beats online. Even though his sound click was getting millions of streams (NO HACKS) but he didn’t know how to leverage that to make money. After moving out of the NYU dorms, KQuick started producing artists and selling studio time out of his apartment. From there KQuick saved enough money to rent an official studio space in Brooklyn for $900. In order to make enough money to get by, HE WOULD RUN 4-5 STUDIO SESSIONS A DAY to make revenue to sustain and pay back loans and become profitable. Should you quit your day job and do music full-time? KQuick says - you need multiple revenue sources outside of music that is giving you enough to sustain. But the key to unlocking revenue is a brand strategy. Everything around the music should bring you money. Shows, merchandising, etc. KQuick says being a one trick pony will hurt you. Specialization is good, but you need diversity in order to succeed. When are you “in the music industry” ? As soon as you make music and put it out. Take ownership of that. KQuick's first placement - Chris Brown’s “Famous Girl” with Ryan Leslie in 2009. First royalty check was 1 cent. It was so low it didn’t even pass the threshold of cutting a check. ASCAP just sent him a notification. He then got a deal with VIACOM which gave him an “aha” moment. KQuick says the relationships are the #1 key that enabled him to produce for Chris Brown, J Cole, Nelly and others. Keeping your network fresh and doing as many favors for people as possible is what enabled him to work with “major artists.” KQuick says that working with up and comers is critical to career success - because you never know who the next big star, or next big executive will be. “When you start skipping steps is when you land somewhere you’re not ready for, and that’s when you get knocked down and it’s a lot harder to get back up.” Popularity vs Talent - Do A&R’s need to get back to finding real talent, versus scouring for “viral” singers / rappers on Instagram and YouTube? KQuick says - the A&R’ing is happening on the creative level now. It’s producers and songwriters finding talent. You don’t have to rely on labels to tell you what’s hot anymore. It’s the other way around. The culture tells the labels what’s hot. Your Instagram should be a highlight reel of your career. Consistent and focused. Biggest problems independent musicians make is that they’re too erratic on social media, which is a symptom of poor strategy. They post too much, too often, and about too many different things. On the flip side of that, not posting enough can hurt you as well. Dreamville is the poster child example of a brand that’s leveraging Instagram the way a label or brand should be. Creativity is the most important thing about the music industry. Without the creativity, there is no industry. Without the creatives, there’s nothing to sell and nothing to buy. Making music your career: Jay - You went to NYU Tisch School of Arts and got a degree in music - most of your peers in the game didn’t go that route. What do you feel were the benefits of going that route vs the school of hard knocks that most of your peers have taken? G - What was the point when you realized you didn’t need a “9 to 5” or “day job” to support yourself. How did you make that transition to where music became your passion + your bread winner? What advice would you give to upcoming artists who want to quit their “day job” to do music full time? G - Music business is such a grind - many people early on take a lot of L’s and call it quits. Did you ever have that moment where you thought maybe this business wasn’t for you? You’re “in” - Now What? Jay - What was the first moment where you felt like “OK - I’m really doing this” - was there an artist or producer you were working with, a placement, etc? G - What was the amount of your first royalty or publishing check? G - How do you even get to work with artists like J Cole and Nelly? Was it a plug? Manager? This is the holy grail for music producers. This is what every single person is trying to do. How did you beat out the thousands if not millions of other people trying to do this? Jay - You have spent a lot of time in the studio with some pretty big names. But you continue to work with a lot of independent artists like Gaetano and myself. You’re obviously at a point in your career where you can afford to be selective - why do you continue to work with indie artists and what are the things that you look for when deciding which ones to work with? Behind The Music Biz - Major Labels + Technology Disruption G - So Quick, you have a lot of experience working with artists who are signed to major labels with record deals. From your perspective, what is the common pattern among artists who are getting signed now, vs artists who are not? In other words, what are the big companies looking for when deciding on what types of artists to sign? Jay - On the other end of the spectrum are indie artists who now enjoy a larger platform than ever before as a result of platforms like Spotify, Soundcloud and social media i.e. Instagram, that didn’t exist 10 years ago. Talk to us about the impact that technology has had on the industry and is it truly the great “equalizer” for unsigned artists to get exposure. G - Let’s talk about popularity vs talent for artists - there’s a lot of debate of what it means to be an “A&R” today. Is it just a bunch of interns sitting in a label office scavenging through YouTube looking for the next big viral thing? Is it really just all about numbers? Or is there still some element of - “this artist has star potential, works hard and has remarkable talent. I believe we have something here that’s worth taking a shot on, despite very low followers counts / views on social media.” Building a Brand (as a producer): Jay - Aside from all the accomplishments and accolades - there is something notable about the KQuick brand. Visually, your instagram feed has an aesthetic. Your Tweets have a distinct style and tone. Is this something you intentionally think about, or does it come naturally? G - What are some of the biggest mistakes you see upcoming artists, songwriters and producers make when it comes to building a brand for themselves? Jay - How are you doing this for your group, Click n’ Press and are there any other examples of artists in the game who are doing it right, indie or otherwise? What’s Next? G - Quick, you’ve already done sooooo much, but we know you don’t sleep! What are some projects you’re working on right now that you’re excited about? What’s next for you? Where do you see yourself in the next 5-10 years. Jay - Do you have any regrets? Anything you would have done differently? Any situations with major fuck ups on your part? Have you ever been burned by anyone in the industry? If so, what happened? G - What’s the #1 piece of advice you have for business leaders or entrepreneurs today who are building a brand or company, or simply striving to achieve something great in their life or career? Jay - What’s the #1 piece of advice you have for creatives / musicians that are seeking to take their career to the next level?

We dig into authorial intent, the challenges of animation, and fan work (and entitlement) as we talk about Rooster Teeth's RWBY and its fans! ## Episode Outline **Topics:** RWBY (obviously), Anime, Linguistics, the _Tales of_ series, authorial intent, dudebros, expectations and fan work ### Fandom Facts “RWBY (pronounced "ruby") is an American anime-style web series and media franchise created by Monty Oum for Rooster Teeth. The show is set in the fictional world of Remnant, where young people train to become warriors (called "Huntsmen" and "Huntresses") to protect their world from monsters called Grimm. The name RWBY is derived from the four main characters' forenames: Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang, as well as their associated theme colors; Red, White, Black, and Yellow. Episode Outline Topics: RWBY (obviously), Anime, Linguistics, the Tales of series, authorial intent, dudebros, expectations and fan work Fandom Facts “RWBY (pronounced "ruby") is an American anime-style web series and media franchise created by Monty Oum for Rooster Teeth. Since 2017, Nick and Justin of the Epic Film Guys have dedicated a block of time each year to livestream their podcast and other content in order to raise funds for the Cancer Research Institute. This organization researches immunotherapy with the goal of curing all forms of cancer. They are among some of the most reputable charities out there with a rating of 92% on CharityNavigator.org. Last year's Livestream for the Cure 2.0 (check it out here) was a resounding success. In 30 hours live on the air, the Epic Film Guys raised over $5,000 for cancer research and an additional $780 for Perry Johnson, a fellow podcaster who guested on the event and was diagnosed with stage IV esophageal cancer shortly before it began. Because they smashed their goal and because of their amazing community of peers and fellow podcasters, they decided this year’s event should be even bigger and better. The 3rd Annual Livestream for the Cure will be held from May 17th through the 19th, and the Epic Film Guys will be live for FORTY hours as they try to hit their biggest goal yet and raise $7,500. The event will be held live at https://twitch.tv/epicfilmguys and will include dozens of fellow content creators and podcasters who are joining them to reach this common goal. They will be live for 40 hours from the following times (all are EST): May 17th: 10:00 AM to 2:00 AM May 18th: 10:00 AM to 2:00 AM May 19th: 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM Follow the event on Facebook or follow @livestream4cure on Twitter for updates and guest information. Links for merchandise (all proceeds go toward the total) and other information will be coming in the near future. To make a donation before and during the event, visit LivestreamfortheCure.com. Let's make this the biggest year for the Livestream for the Cure yet! Together, we can make a difference! ### Fandom Facts * Relative to Mushrooms (general), not a lot of folks are looking up information on magic mushrooms (Psilocybin), [or even mycology](https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=%2Fm%2F052sf,%2Fm%2F057v5,%2Fm%2F09l4w) and are getting more interested in mushrooms over time * There are at least five different subreddits on mushrooms, all tackling a different aspect of mushrooms ([identifying mushrooms](https://www.reddit.com/r/ShroomID/), [psilocybin](https://www.reddit.com/r/PsilocybinMushrooms/), [anything mushrooms](https://www.reddit.com/r/shrooms/), etc.), the largest being [r/mycology](https://www.reddit.com/r/mycology/) (but just by a few thousand) * In _Star Trek: Discovery_ there is a character, Lieutenant Paul Stamets, who is an astromycologist and is named after a real U.S. scientist of the same name who is investigating how mushrooms might be able to [save the world in different ways](https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/paul-stamets-star-trek-mushroom-expert-mycology-1.4454204) (e.g. treating disease, cleaning up oil spills) * ...His obsession with mushrooms started at age 19 where he ate an entire bag of magic mushrooms. * Only about 5% of the world's fungi are thought to be identified ### First Impressions #### Z: Ever since I had a mushroom dipped in ranch dressing at some sort of party when I was a kid, I've enjoyed their texture. And, as I tried things like portabellas, and shitake, and cremini, and beech mushrooms, I found that there was a whole world of mushrooms out there. So, when it came to mycology, my impression was that people interested in it were either foodies looking to explore perhaps the most varied, unprocessed, vegetarian/vegan(?) food, or scientists classifying them. #### T: I put mycology up there with philatelists and numismatists; something that you can go quite deep into, but that I know nothing about. I've heard bits and pieces about it (pressings, how the mushroom responds to metal, etc.) and I know friends with an interest in wild mushrooms (not for use as a drug, but as general survivalist interest)... but beyond that, it's mostly been an unknown (popularity-wise) known unknown. ### Famous Last Words What did we have to say about an upcoming topic, _Digimon_, with only our first impressions? **G:** How do fans of Digimon feel about it being diet Pokemon?_ _ **T:** What is it about Digimon that helped it stand above some of its contemporaries?_ _ **Z:** Do fans of Digimon hold any sort of grudge against fans of Pokemon? This week, we make sure that everything is cleared by the ethics committee before we talk about SCP-001. That's right we're talking about fans of the SCP Foundation! ...And that's it for this season! Main episodes will be back in two weeks, but stay tuned because next week we have a special introduction to the podcast, our first regular minisode! ## Episode outline ### Fandom Facts **History and Origins:** The SCP Foundation (Secure, Contain, Protect) is a fictional organization launched in 2008 that is the subject of web-based collaborative writing project of the same name. Stories from the project often describe situations that violate natural law, and are written in an academic, scientific writing style. The series of stories started with SCP-173 on 4chan's paranormal _/x/_ board. The SCP Foundation has hundreds of different stories about various SCPs and the SCP Foundation itself, and has also inspired many spin-off works such as _SCP - Containment Breach_. **Search Data:** Interest in the SCP Foundation [follows a strange trend](https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=%2Fg%2F1q2xhks7f). From 2004 to January 2012, interest was on a steady decline. However, after that point there was a sharp increase in interest followed by a mostly upward trend in interest with spikes in May 2012 (Possibly Markiplier playing _Containment Breach_ ), August 2014, and April 2017 (Series IV opens up?). The top 10 countries, by search volume are: Japan, South Korea, Poland, United States, Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Australia, and Taiwan. **Fan Demographics:** Fortunately, the [SCP Foundation website holds an annual community survey](http://www.scp-wiki.net/2017-survey-results). We arrive in Italy, and rather than diving into a fandom, we dive into a history lesson on Italy, Progressive Rock, and its liberating love child, Rock Progressivo Italiano (RPI)! What is it? How is it different than prog rock in general? Why is its own subgenre? Some of these, an more, on this week's episode! Next week, we'll be travelling to Turkey to talk about fans of that delicious dark beverage, coffee! ## Episode outline ### Fandom Facts **Origins:** Progressive Rock (prog rock) is a subgenre of rock music developed in the UK and US throughout the mid to late 1960s (initially termed progressive pop). It is based on a fusion of styles and is an outgrowth of psychedelic bands who moved away from pop tradition in favour of different instrumentation an compositional techniques more often found in jazz, folk, or classical music. Rock Progressivo Italiano (RPI) is a subgenre within a subgenre. Italy was generally uninterested in rock music _until_ the early 1970s when the italian prog rock scene developed. RPI is notable as it tends to emphasize the classical rather than rock elements of the music, often including some operatic influences. **Most Active:** The fandom was definitely more active towards the inception of the subgenre. In terms of [Google Trends](https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=Rock%20Progressivo%20Italiano,Prog%20Rock) data, search interest is quite low (with the most interest taking place in July 2004). Interest in RPI is also significantly less than prog rock (which is not in decline by comparison; interest in prog rock is mostly flat). There is not enough data to determine any particular regionalism, but one might expect that it is popular in... Italy. **Related fandoms:** Prog Rock. ### [Last Episode's](http://fanthropological.com/e/38-arsene-lupin-fans/) Famous Last Words **Z:** Are all of the prog rock bands in Italy fans of each other? **G:** How much of Italian prog rock is taken from British prog rock? Using imperatives to tell people to do something Hi and welcome to another great lesson from New English Academy. I’m Giles Parker and I’m your guide for this course. Today we’re going to look at some really useful phrasal verbs. Phrasal verbs are verbs that have two words to them, always a verb and either a preposition or a particle. You hear them all the time in spoken English so it is a good idea to start learning them. We’re also going look at how to tell people what to do. This is called the imperative form and it is very useful for giving instructions and giving directions or orders. Our comprehension text today is called ‘Pass the paint pot’ and features a dialogue between yours truly and a friend of mine, Marian, who helped me paint my house recently. He is just starting to learn English, so please forgive some of his pronunciation. I think he does very well. As ever, you can download the free transcript and the free guidebook with 25 different activities on how to improve your English using these podcasts from the website, www.newenglishacademy.com. Don’t forget to check out the catalogue of free online English courses too. This podcast is aimed at beginner level students but there is something useful here for everyone. Grammar explanation: Here in the Green Heart of Italy, I have made lots of new friends. Some friends are local people and other friends come from foreign countries to find work here. My friend Marian comes from Slovakia. He is a stone-mason, which means he knows how to build things with stone. Marian speaks pretty good Italian, but many of the people he works for don't come from Italy and they don't speak much Italian. So, he has to speak to them in English. Often, they want to help him do his job. This means Marian has to speak to them in a mixture of Italian and English. He has to give them instructions and directions and tell them what to do and how to do it. When Marian tells someone to do something, he uses a very useful bit of grammar - the imperative form of a verb. The imperative is the verb when you tell someone to do something, when you give directions or instructions or give an order. It's very easy to use. It is also very direct and straight so it is a good idea to be polite with it. To tell someone to do something with the imperative just use the base form of the verb - that is, the verb without to. You don't have to change it or add anything to it.  So for example: Give me that nail gun. Start the compressor. If you want to tell someone not to do something, I mean, if you want to use the imperative in the negative, that is really easy too. Just add Do not before the verb. To make it friendlier, or politer add Please and make a contraction from Do not to Don't... So for example: Don't stand there. Please don't do that. Marian always tries to be polite so he doesn't always use imperatives. Instead, he makes them into requests. This means, he asks you to do something. It is very easy to take an imperative and change it into a request. All you need is a simple modal auxiliary, such as Can or could and make it into a question.  For example: Could you pass me that hammer, please? Can you put away the tools, please? When someone uses imperatives or requests, you can answer in a couple of ways. If you want to do it, you can say Sure! or OK! For example: · Put that hammer in the box there. Sure! · Don’t throw out that newspaper. OK. But…if you don't want to do it then you have to find a polite way to refuse. Refusing or saying no to anything in English is not as simple as just saying No! We’ll look at how to refuse things in more detail in another lesson. Lastly, a quick word about some of the verbs in today’s lesson. We’re going to look at phrasal verbs, or two-word verbs. This means they have a preposition or a particle after the verb.  They are very common and you’ll hear them all the time in spoken English.  And like everything in any language, there are some rules. Some phrasal verbs need an object. This means they need a something or someone to receive the action of the verb. For example: · You should put away the tools – put away is the phrasal verb and tools is the object. You can put the object either after the verb and the particle OR between the verb and the particle. So, for example; · Don’t turn on the radio. · Don’t turn the radio on. Did you see where the object is? The object of both these sentences is the radio. In the first sentence it is after the phrasal verb, in the second it is between the verb and the particle. Lastly, one important rule: When the object is a pronoun, it has to go between the verb and the particle. So for example; · Turn the radio off. · Turn it off. Some phrasal verbs don’t take an object so there is no problem with where to put the pronoun. As I said, phrasal verbs are really common in spoken English. There is no easy way to learn them other than by reading and listening and remembering them. You can get a list of which phrasal verbs in the vocabulary lesson in the online course on imperatives and phrasal verbs on the website. Now for some reading and listening comprehension. With the right imperatives to tell his friends and helpers what to do, Marian can build and fix houses. Last week Marian and I worked together. He is the boss so he asked or told me to do lots of different things. While you listen to the dialog try to find all the imperatives. Then, listen again and find all the requests. You can check them on the transcript. Also, check what phrases we use to say yes! when we give an order or make a request. On the transcript, use a highlighter to show the imperative and the answer. Enjoy! That’s an imperative! Comprehension text A couple of weeks ago, Marian and I worked together to paint my house. It was a lot easier with two guys doing the work. I had painted houses before but Marian has more experience than me so he told me what to do sometimes. It all started when I asked him to help me. G: Marian, could you take a look at the paint in my house sometime soon? Some of it is old and needs fixing. M: Sure! When is a good time for you? G: How about tomorrow morning? M: OK. Phone me when you are ready. G: OK. Can you give me an estimate tomorrow too? M: Probably. Let me look at it and we'll see. I have to measure the walls. G: Oh, and could you let me know tomorrow what things we need? M: Sure. It depends on the house, you know? Do I have to prepare an invoice too? G: What? An invoice? So the next day I phoned him and he came over. Here is how it went. G: OK, this is the living room... M: Hmm... look at that damp patch in the corner. We will have to fix that. G: OK, what else? M: Could you help me move the sofa? Thanks. OK - come here a minute. G: What's up? M: There is something wrong with the skirting board here. G: OK, I see. Can you fix it too? M: Sure. No problems. I'll do it later. Now, pass me the ladder, will you? G: Here you go. M: OK, we need to put masking tape all around the doors and windows. G: Sure. Give me the tape and I'll get started over here. M: Pick up the tool box - I think the tape is under it. G: OK, I got it. M: Right. Let's get started. You finish putting up the tape; I'll take a look at the damp patch. G: OK... We worked together and put up the masking tape. The damp patch was difficult to fix, however. M: OK we have a small problem here. Could you hand me that trowel? I want to dig out some of the old plaster here in this corner. G: Here you go. Can I do anything to help? M: Sure. Get the new plaster for me, please. Then put some of it on this float and pass it up to me when I'm ready. G: Right. Watch out for the old plaster here. Don't let it get in your eyes. It isn't good for you. M: No worries. Here we go. I finished. Now, could you hand me the float with the new plaster? Thanks. G: Sure. Be careful around the edges there. M: It's OK - I know what I'm doing. G: Great - that looks better already. What next? M: Well, we have to wait for it to dry before we can paint it. But we can tidy up the room and get ready for the first coat.... So we started tidying up the place and moving the furniture. M: OK, could you give me a hand with this cabinet? I want to put it into the middle of the room, under the light. It will be safer there. G: Got it. Gee, it's heavy - difficult to move... M: Don't worry - just use koshi mawashi... G: Ha ha, funny guy. What about the tools? They are everywhere... M: OK - put them away. The brushes, mixer and the float go in the bucket. Put the trowel and the tape back in the toolbox. Don’t throw out that paint thinner – it will be useful later. G: Sure. Anything else? M: Hmm... could you turn on the light and turn off the radio? I need perfect light and peace when I'm painting a room. G: OK, Picasso. Lights on, radio off. Right. Let's go have a coffee before we start painting. M: Good idea! After the coffee we mixed up the paint, climbed up the ladders and started painting. The first coat went on the ceiling and walls nice and smoothly and after a couple of hours we were ready to stop for the day and let the paint dry. M: OK, I think we can quit now. Let’s stop here, clean up, and start again tomorrow morning. G: Alright. I’ll wash the rollers and brushes. M: OK, but don’t wash them in hot water, just use cold water. And when you have finished, don’t let them stay wet. Dry them on the tree outside. G: Got it. How about pay? M: Don’t pay me today. Pay me tomorrow when we finish the job. G: Fine – see you tomorrow, then. M: Ciao.  G: Ciao.

What we learned is that [interest in the McRib](https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=hipster%20food,fad%20food,mcrib), for example, dwarfs interest in search terms like 'fad food' or 'hipster food'. If you remove that, there is a noted increase in interest in 'hipster food' and decrease in interest in 'fad food' since 2004 (though overall, fad food is the more popular search). The vast majority of results come from countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. ### [Last Episode's](http://fanthropological.com/e/breakfast-cereals-part-of-a-fanss-complete-breakfast/) Famous Last Words **Z** Is there a fad food fan out there who collects wrappers (or similar)? **G** What was the first fast food restaurant to have a secret menu? **T** Are there people who collect and preserve fad foods? What happens when you take strong subtext, immortal beings, and over forty years of writing? It's not fanfic, but it is a fascinating history of the Vampire Chronicles fandom! **History and Origins:** > The Vampire Chronicles is a series of novels by American writer Anne Rice that revolves around the fictional character Lestat de Lioncourt, a French nobleman turned into a vampire in the 18th century. > > — [Wikipedia - The Vampire Chronicles](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Vampire_Chronicles) The book series encompasses 16 separate novels (including crossovers) from 1976 to 2018, and has been adapted into films—Interview with the Vampire in 1994, starring Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Antonio Banderas, Christian Slater, and Kirsten Dunst; and The Queen of the Damned in 2002—and as of July 2018, it was announced that a TV series adaptation of the novels is in development by Hulu. **Search Data:** Interest in _The Vampire Chronicles_ [has been on a slow decline since 2004](https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=%2Fm%2F02f5gv,%2Fm%2F02p76f9,%2Fm%2F0mb0). [//A better question might be, why vampires ever? Looking back, it's hard to think of a period when we weren't in the middle of a vampire craze. In the late 1970s, Anne Rice started raking in the money with Interview With the Vampire, and movies like Werner Herzog's Nosferatu the Vampyre and the comedy Love at First Bite were critical hits. Then came The Lost Boys, Near Dark, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Innocent Blood, Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the movie), four more Anne Rice books, and Interview With the Vampire (the movie)—which could all be lumped into a rage for vampires that lasted clear through from the mid-1980s to the early 1990s. Vampires were back again in the mid-1990s, with Buffy (the TV show), the Blade movies, Southern Vampire Mysteries (the book series), and From Dusk Till Dawn. Following several promotional trailers, the first episode was screened at the Rooster Teeth convention event RTX and then released on their website in July 2013.” ‒ [Wikipedia - RWBY](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RWBY) * A fan survey from about a year ago gives us [some idea of the demographics](https://www.reddit.com/r/RWBY/comments/6ckube/rrwby_user_survey_results/) (and other interesting tidbits about the fandom) with over 700 respondents: * 86% of respondents identified as male (and a non-zero percentage as assholes: Attack Helicopter) * Almost 86% are under age 24 (67% are between 18 and 24); if we do some math, its reasonable to assume that means that folks probably started watching between ages 13-19 (i.e. five years ago) * Just over half (55%) watch Rooster Teeth's podcast ### First Impressions #### Z: I knew absolutely nothing about RWBY before starting the research for this episode. I'd seen some cosplayers and had no idea who they were until someone told me, but had no idea that it was a web series or “anime” or whatever. Also, had no idea that it was something Rooster Teeth did - and had no idea how big Rooster Teeth is until digging into the research for this episode. #### T: I couldn't even tell you what my first impressions of RWBY were, not because it was so long ago, but because a lot of life happened between now and then. I was following along pretty closely for a period, though digging into the research, that was probably only the second season. I … definitely was watching for the Anime-ness of it all. ### Famous Last Words What did we have to say about next week's topic, _Beyblade_ with only our first impressions? **G:** How much is focussed on the battle tops in the anime? 50/50? 90/10? **T:** Is Beyblade still running?
