Games and movies. Rarely anything worthwhile.
Robocop Remake > Modern Disney Remakes, should Disney sanitize all their old material for Disney+? I don't think so whereas Dave is more understanding of the need. I watched the Star Trek Discovery finale, and Dave is watching Game of Thrones final season. Lastly Sekiro is cool and exciting.
Bad news, we're back! At first we talk a bit about They Shall Not Grow Old, but the bulk of the show is us complaining about Star Trek Discovery and Anthem. Hope you enjoy.
I finished Resident Evil 7 and found it to be dramatically worse than the RE2 Remake, but I still found merit in the first person perspective. We both saw Alita: Battle Angel and we liked how it avoids all the negative trends of recent years. It's mostly gushing with some criticism. Then in our ongoing commentary on Discovery season 2 we found ep 5 to be one of the worst episodes of anything ever whereas 6 was fine.
Dave started playing Dishonored 2, but instead of talking about it we keep drifting off to talk about computer hardware, the pros and cons of PC gaming and such. The Anthem demo came out last weekend so we obviously complain about it, I finished all the endings in Resident Evil 2 and it's truly a triumph of outsourcing. Then I think we remember to talk about Dishonored 2 again, we sing the praises of keyboard+mouse, we kind of want to replay Bioshock Infinite, and finally we discuss episodes 3 and 4 of Star Trek Discovery which is a frustrating idiotic trainwreck we can't stop watching. I had plans of editing this episode, but then I couldn't be bothered so here it is kind of as is.
Nobody is happy with the direction of Facebook, Youtube, or anything at all. Nintendo canned Metroid Prime 4 because it was garbage, we're both watching Star Trek Discovery Season 2 which is better than the first one but not nearly good enough to be actually good. I finished Detroit: Become Human and is mostly happy with how it turned out, and afterwards I started the Resident Evil 2 Remake which is brilliant. Dave's been streaming games so we talk about that for a bit.
Despite the horrible first season Dave tries to convince me to watch the second season of Star Trek Discovery. I started playing Detroit: Become Human and I'm having a nicer time than the internet made me expect. Dave's continuing Shadow of the Tomb Raider, we talk about demos, I saw Black Mirror: Bandersnatch and I wish the series would be cancelled. Then we talk about Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse which despite being brilliant we think should have been better. Finally Dave talks about the musical Miss Saigon.
We ruin Christmas by watching youtube and social media, a little about our bleak future, I finally played through The Last Guardian and loved it, Dave started playing Shadow of the Tomb Raider and is also having a nice time, and we watched the Doctor Who New Years special and liked it better than anything in the most recent season.
What is worse in life, the nuclear apocalypse or watching Cars 2? We decided to find out. We watched Cars 2 and 3, Dave has finally begun watching the Eva Rebuild movies, and I watched Threads with the director's commentary track.
Dave tries in vain to avoid normies, Pornhub should buy Tumblr, I watched the Mnet Asian Music Awards, Doctor Who ended and we're not all that happy with how it turned out, we bash the live action Beauty and the Beast some more, why a project can go off the rails, the horrible Sonic movie poster, I saw Incredibles 2 and was as underwhelmed as you'd expect, and we make bad plans for the future.
For this week I watched a bunch of Disney live action adaptations such as Beauty and the Beast which was poorly judged and pointless, Alice in Wonderland which was so bad it redefines the concept of bad itself, Maleficent which becomes worse the more you think about it, Cinderella which was actually acceptable but slightly annoying, and The Jungle Book which was surprisingly good.
Is there a causal relationship between the rise of mono bluetooth speakers and nazism? Dave watched a musical that was inspired in some miniscule amount by him, I gave up on Doctor Who, a style of sci-fi on TV is dead, low and mid budget art is the best because they're the only ones that can make our deepest hopes and dreams come true, which leads into Settlers news, and finally we grouse about animated movie sequels and Disney’s modern 3d remakes.
Threads is coming out on bluray! The White Album got remastered, Delta Rune is pretty good, I watched The Red Turtle, the new Doctor Who season is turning out bad, and Dave started watching Deep Space 9.
Fasting, the Rosa Parks Doctor Who episode, and music rights.
The second episode of Doctor Who was more divisive than the first, but it gave me the opportunity to recommend old Who. Dave is almost done with the first season of The Haunting of Hill House and is loving it, we touch on the looming threat of Disney's streaming service, and then we just babble about random stuff until we show enough decency to stop recording. I trimmed the end so it's probably not as bad as I remember.
Doctor Who is back with a whole new staff and we're pretty happy with how it turned out, and I finished Shadow of the Tomb Raider which I also liked quite a bit.
Dave went to Thought Bubble, I'm not mourning Telltale's passing, the new Hardcore History episode, Dave watched Black Panther and Infinity War so we talk about how superhero movies can't possibly be as satisfying as the video game adaptations. Then Dave recommends Maniac, and we both rewatched The Last Jedi and made lots of notes. I think this was a more productive conversation than the last one.
We're idiots who bought brand new games released this week, audio logs are stupid, Shadow of the Tomb Raider is better than I dared hope, Dave is enjoying Spiderman a lot. We haven't really played either of them for more than a few hours, but that won't stop us from talking about them for over an hour.
The justice system could be better, Henry Cavill to play Geralt, the Battlefield 5 beta rubbed me the wrong way, we talk for way too long about the Mr Plinkett Last Jedi review, we don't want to watch any Cyberpunk 2077 videos, Spiderman puddle controversy, and probably more I can't remember.
We've done almost nothing this week, but I compared a bunch of mice aimed at different demographics in Overload & Quake Champions, and Dave has a Dragon Ball update.
I watched Hereditary, A Quiet Place, and Mission Impossible 5 & 6, we briefly talk about Yakuza 0 on PC, we talk at length about Emuparadise and emulation, I played the remake of Ys 4 that came out on PC two weeks ago, I then sing the praises of Unavowed, Dave's reading Dragon Ball, and we go on and on about how comics in the West aren't living up to their potential.
Disney fires James Gunn for 9 year old tweets, I read Man's Search for Meaning and found it surprisingly relevant for modern day maladies, then I listened to the new episode of Hardcore History, and Dave watched Les Mis and tells us why it's no good.
I watched the Sense8 finale, the Aliens: Colonial Marines AI typo, I saw Purge 4, I listened to the audiobook version of The Art of the Deal, AT&T will ruin HBO, Dave is enjoying Settlers II, and the Surface Go looks nice.
E3 is a ridiculous waste of money that inspired me to gripe about how developers chose to present their games, we noted the absence of Final Fantasy 7, and the Resident Evil 2 trailer made Dave upset you don't play it from the perspective of a rat.
E3 is almost upon us, I'm done with The West Wing, I saw the 2018 Tomb Raider movie, Dave watched Guardians of the Galaxy 2, and then Dave watched a bunch of trailers and came away annoyed.
We don't care about poker, Solo wasn't terrible, and Dave watched Guardians of the Galaxy again and is bothered by how it depicts murder.
I watched Deadpool 2 and didn't like it as much as the first one, Dave saw the first 20 minutes of Paddington and found it to be exactly as bad as he feared, I then saw Pacific Rim Uprising which was kind of crap but also not as bad as I expected, I played Tyranny for 7 minutes, Dave experienced an archaic technology known as "television", I played a few hours of Persona 4 for the first time, and Dave saw three episodes of Brooklyn 99 and was unimpressed. This summary kind of makes it seem like we're grumpy assholes, which is correct.
I went to Japan for 17 days and have important things to say about their toilet paper and washing practices. While in Japan I saw Avengers Infinity War, so, unfortunately, we talk about that. This week I finished Yakuza 6, Dave is annoyed by muscle men character design and is excited by Thundercats Roar, I played the free weekend for Shadow of War, Dave played King's Quest for the first time, and Dave is watching 80s magical girlfriend movies.
Amazon doesn't seem able to afford their streaming service, we sing the praises of Mac & Me, I played Yakuza 6 and of course have a lot to say about it, people crunching to make a Warhammer Diablo clone, Dave watched Steve Jobs (the movie).
Why there was no podcast last week, expiring music licenses strike again, I watched Coco, I saw The Big Lebowski for the first time, Dave saw Annihilation, I made the mistake of watching the latest Ridley Scott trainwreck All The Money in The World, I then watched the Aaron Sorkin directed Molly’s Game, which then caused me to start watching The West Wing for the first time, and finally Dave brings up the new production of Jesus Christ Superstar for some reason.
I made the mistake of watching Ready Player One, and Dave watched Blade Runner 2049.
Dave got a biscuit tin, London is Shenmue 2, Dave watched London Hamilton, stereo is neat isn’t it, more waffling on about London Hamilton, I watched Annihilation, Dave’s watching Blade Runner 2049, I finished Yakuza: Dead Souls, and I ask Dave a deeply profound question about the origin of birthdays, and more!
I cast judgment on all of Mighty No 9 after playing for 20 minutes. Dave is grumpy about upcoming games he doesn't care about. Then we dive into movies where I watched a bunch of Oscar-winning films. Darkest Hour, and Phantom Thread, and Shape of Water. There are positive and negative things to say about all of them. In addition, I saw In This Corner of the World, and three "Netflix Original" anime shows, specifically A.I.C.O. Incarnation, B - The Beginning, and Devilman Crybaby. Finally, Dave watched Bill & Ted 2, where he discovered the origins of Mario Bros The Movie. Business as usual.
I played the Yakuza 6 demo, I watched Thor Ragnarok, Black Panther, The Death of Stalin, Call me by your Name, and Lady Bird, and Dave watched Bill & Ted.
Dave watched Wrath of Khan this week, so we talk about it and other Star Trek movies for almost the entire show. In the end we talk a bit about JJ Abrams now that he's talking about Episode 9, and I dove into PS2 emulation, to a greater extent than I've already been doing.
The Solo trailer doesn’t bode well, MrPSB joins in and we talk a bit about his Train Simulator streams, and then we review the first season of Star Trek Discovery and spoil all of it. Finally a bit about the current anime season, and Dave has a Witcher update.
Final Fantasy 15 vs Trails of Cold Steel, Altered Carbon doesn’t seem great (not that we’ve seen it), I played a bunch of King’s Field 4, and Dave defends Star Trek Discovery.
I finished Hellblade and give a quick summary, I then started playing Trails of Cold Steel which is one of the best PC ports I’ve ever played with unusual convenience features. Both Dave and I read Fire and Fury which we talk about briefly, Transformers games removed from sale because the license expired, then we gush over the Nintendo Labo.
I played Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice which I’m not enjoying, Dave has a little Breath of the Wild update, we talk a bit about the Mini Direct, which leads to Joseph Anderson’s 2 hour Mario Odyssey video and his unreasonable way of playing games. Finally I watched Encounters at the End of World, and Dave recommends Detectorists.
I played Xanadu Next, Dave recommends The Butterfly Effect with Jon Ronson, we talk about Logan Paul, some general social media griping, and finally, Dave talks a bit about Zelda Breath of the Wild.
For the last show of the year: I binged Black Mirror Season 4, I watched An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power, Dave watched Your Name, we complain about the dull art direction in 3d animated films, I finished Finding Paradise & Quantum Break, Dave & Abby were given a Switch and played Mario Odyssey and Zelda, and I watched the Squadron 42 presentation.
We watched Star Wars Episode 8: The Last Jedi. I felt it was alright, but kind of slapped together in a hurry, whereas Dave was more willing to go along with it. This is the only thing we talk about in this episode.
Loads of trailers came out this week, like Death Stranding, Metro:Aurora, unnamed FromSoftware game, and details about Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and we end up complaining a bunch about superhero comics, we talk about the Alita: Battle Angel trailer, I watched Michael Jackson's This is it, and Noah Caldwell Gervais 2+ hour bus driving video.
Dave's editing nightmare is over, I played Titanfall 2 which turns out to be both brilliant and generic bland paste, I saw The Good Place, then saw Kathryn Bigelow's Detroit, and Dave played Slightly Magic.
I watched Netflix’s The Punisher, The Deuce, and Star Trek Discovery. I complain about how Marvel/Netflix don’t seem to care about making genuinely great shows, and then Dave recommends The Good Place.
The main topic this week was inspired by a visit to the Steam page for Okami HD, which included so inappropriate "other games are like this" recommendations that it ticked me off to no end. After that, we talked a little bit about Tesla's new trucks, and Dave finally finished Witcher 3.
I played Life is Strange Before The Storm, the Telltale layoffs, we’re confused about who is excited for Xbox One X, Sonic Forces sucks; what a surprise, we complain about garbage micro transactions and more.
