Act 1 of A Bird Story and Finding Paradise.
In January, the month of resolutions, join 5x15 to hear the acclaimed author Pico Iyer on how we might find paradise in the present. Paradise is a universal but elusive concept; a place we might spend our whole lives looking for. Moving between Iran, North Korea, the Dalai Lama's Himalayas and the temples of Japan, Pico Iyer's new book The Half Known Life: Finding Paradise in a Divided World reflects on ideas of utopia and ways of finding solace in these fractious times. Does religion lead us back to Eden or only into constant contention? Why do so many seeming paradises turn into warzones? And does paradise exist only in the afterworld – or can it be found in the here and now? Don't miss the chance to hear from one of the most inspiring and perceptive travel writers of our time. Pico Iyer will be in conversation with the internationally best-selling writer and podcaster Katherine May, author of Wintering and the forthcoming Enchantment. Praise for Pico Iyer 'Nothing less than a guided tour of the human soul ... This is a book not only for the ages, but for our very specific, very troubled age. A masterpiece' — ELIZABETH GILBERT “Immersive and profound…. Iyer matches penetrating insights with some of the most transportive prose around. This further burnishes Iyer's reputation as one of the best.” — Publishers Weekly PICO IYER was born in Oxford, England in 1957. Since 1982 he has been a full-time writer, publishing 15 books, translated into 23 languages, on subjects ranging from the Dalai Lama to globalism, from the Cuban Revolution to Islamic mysticism. They include such long- running sellers as Video Night in Kathmandu, The Open Road and The Art of Stillness. At the same time he has been writing for Time, The New York Times, Granta, the Financial Times and more than 250 other periodicals worldwide. His four talks for TED have received more than 10 million views so far. Since 1992 Iyer has spent much of his time at a Benedictine hermitage in Big Sur, California, and most of the rest in Nara, Japan. KATHERINE MAY is an internationally bestselling author and podcaster living in Whitstable, UK. Her hybrid memoir Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times became a New York Times, Sunday Times and Der Spiegel bestseller, was adapted as BBC Radio 4's Book of the Week, and was shortlisted for the Porchlight and Barnes and Noble Book of the Year. Her journalism and essays have appeared in a range of publications including The New York Times, The Observer and Aeon. Katherine's podcast, The Wintering Sessions, ranks in the top 1% worldwide, and she has been a guest presenter for On Being's The Future of Hope series. Her next book, Enchantment: Reawakening Wonder in an Exhausted Age, will be published by Faber in March 2023. Katherine lives with her husband, son, two cats and a dog. She loves walking, sea-swimming and pickling slightly unappealing things. Accepting the consequences is a repentant heart saying ‘Yes' to what has been done, praying for mercy, and possibly discovering grace. A few years ago I was caught speeding. I was going too fast. The police officer pulled me over and asked if I knew what speed I was traveling. I didn't. He told me and then wrote out a ticket with a fine. I duly paid the fine. There was a consequence – embarrassment and a hit to my wallet. There was justice, no mercy, and certainly no grace. I accepted the consequence of my actions. However, thinking back now, I'm glad that the consequence was only a fine and not something much worse, such as hitting a pedestrian because of my excessive speed. When you've been caught doing something wrong, what is your very first reaction? You may run, hide, blame someone else, or get angry, even at God. Anything to avoid an awareness that the consequences are entirely on your shoulders. My ancestors have always done this. My parents tried to hide their crime under some figs leaves. My first father blamed my first mother, and my first mother blamed Satan. Satan laughed with glee. We are all stuck in the same curve. You did it. Your choices got you where you are today, but your choices will also lead you out. Yes, I know we live lives where so many other people's choices affect us. But you have to take responsibility for that which is in your control. I was the one that pushed the accelerator down too much—no one else. Read this further here FOLLOW ME! So about a year ago, we did a thing. Ethan and I (Tyler) shared our stories of leaving the Jehovah's Witness religion with the world. We talked about all the good, bad and ugly that comes with that choice. Some people have listened to it, and some have been brave enough to share their stories as well. Over the past 375 days, we've laughed, cried, drank some beers, told some (mostly dirty) jokes, said some (ok, a lot of) curses, and just generally supported each other through all of it. And we've all learned a little more about what it means to find paradise. To everyone that's joined us along the way, we can't thank you enough. Especially Amanda, for continuing to subject herself to the antics of a couple fuckin' clownshoes in a dark smoky basement. So… We're having a reunion. We've been planning this for a while, and we're happy to finally get nearly everyone that's honored our silly little show with their presence back together in one episode. And you're all family now, so we'll see you same time next year. And hopefully we'll have some new faces with us. Thank you for checking us out. Episode 008, Part 2: It's afternoon on Sunday morning. Anyone interested in going out in service this afternoon, please make your way to the front of the Hall. We start out with some educational material that we think the householders, and our brothers and sisters will also enjoy....a few self help books to help you heal and meditate on how much better this new life can be. We added to our book recommendations list, of which most can be found on Audible or other audio book platforms. They are: Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents by Lindsay Gibson. **READ/LISTEN TO THIS** Rewire Your Anxious Brain by Catherine Pittman and Elizabeth Karle This Is Your Brain On Anxiety by Faith Harper What Happened To You by Oprah Winfrey and Bruce Perry Raising Resilient Children by Margalis Fjelstad and Jean McBride How can you wake someone up? One suggestion is by watching documentaries or TV series of "sister religions". These can help deprogram someone that is questioning JW teachings or doctrines. Here are some recommendations: Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief (Let us know if you also have a recommendation). For the rest of the episode, we covered: Tyler's surprise birthday party, relationship with parents, school, court and legal stuff. Let's play the game of "who is the ex reeling in"? Amanda tries out the Squid Hat. Then the latest in legal stuff, shenanigans from the ex, and newest court orders. One child's progress in "the wonder years", a "rite of passage", "coming of age", you get the idea... Wire hangers, freezing of video and 'swaying' to see if it's unfrozen. Compared 2020 vs 2021 annual report, push for volunteers to help with construction, and the super secret auditions for members to be apart of 'East Coast Hollywood', and Lloyd Evans taking a well deserved break. Looks like we make up one car group, and picking up one more brother after lunch before we head out into the ministry. We'll encourage each other and have up building conversations by discussing the latest recommendations in our car group. Stay tuned as we continue our Sunday by having another 'brother' join our Finding Paradise alumi. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/findingparadise/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/findingparadise/support

In this episode we kicked the guys out of Carrol Town (basement we record in) and Amanda talked with the partners of past Finding Paradise participants. Mariah (Dylan's girlfriend), Shannon (Nick's fiancee), and bPann -- it's not a typo (Ethan's fiancee). All three have never been JW, but their partners were either raised in it or mostly raised in it. We discussed what shocked them the most, their first impressions, interactions they've had with JW's in general and with JW 'in-laws', what they're grateful for and advice they have for partners of ex JW's and how to support them. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/findingparadise/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/findingparadise/support

This episode we're doing something a little different. We've pretty much just told stories on Finding Paradise, and that's something that we love to do... and will definitely be doing more of soon. But... every once in a while, you gotta take a minute to sit down with your buddy and do a little catsup. So we plan on keeping a somewhat separate feed of episodes where we just sit around and talk. Because life happens everyday, and things change. So if we don't keep those that we love (yous guys

This week we discussed Finding Paradise, a wonderful sequel to To The Moon. It follows the two doctors traveling through a man's mind to change his memories and past, yet he wants nothing changed nothing at all. Topics include: Memories, perceptions, privacy, and one more that I can't say because it's a spoil! I promise it's very interesting! Intro/Outro Music - Music track: High SpiritsComposer: Bjorn A. Good end, bad end, noncommittal end. But what are the worst endings of all time? Matt reckons the big ol’ fart noise at the end of Mass Effect 3’s deserves a mention. And Noa thinks Dragon Age: Inquisition’s final moments were rubbish. Meanwhile, Brendan doesn’t like the ending of Tacoma. What? Shut up, Brendan. But we’ve also been polishing memories in Finding Paradise, hacking chocolate bars in Exapunks, and punching the money out of people’s faces in Yakuza 0. Super. Welcome to show 415. This week we really get into the Christmas spirit as Chinny got his guitar out to play us some festive songs and it made us all feel warm inside, (well apart from Duke, he hates Christmas). We also talked about games which this week included, Finding Paradise, Tracks, Jackbox Party 3, PuBG on Xbox One and Duke finally got done with Fallout 4 - Far Harbour. As always Chinny brought us this week's news in his unique style and we rounded out the show with Speakpipes and Emails. Enjoy. On this pre-holiday episode the gang staves off the lack of news by talking about recently played games such as To The Moon, Finding Paradise, and STALKER. They also discuss topics such as what makes a good sequel, and commit a cardinal sin by talking about something that isn't video games. (Hosted by Cam, Sam, Zack) Email Questions: Han Solo vs Indiana Jones? Warrior/Mage weapon of choice? What's it like to work, college, and run a podcast?

A Bird Story, Kan Gao's second indie hit, is a preview for the upcoming game Finding Paradise, but is a beautiful silent film of a game in its own right. With zero lines of dialog and a runtime of under 90 minutes, A Bird Story won't take up much time to play, but it quickly seized the hearts of these two Retro Encounter panelists.

The Scriptures tells us more about ourselves and our relationship with the Lord than we often choose to believe. After all, Hebrews 2:7-8 states:"You have made him a little lower than the angels; You have crowned him with glory and honor, and set him over the works of Your hands. You have put all things in subjection under his feet." For in that He put all in subjection under him, He left nothing that is not put under him.But what does this have to do with you and me? How can this passage help me survive the encroaching darkness that threatens to engulf me and my family? For the answer, keep listening. The following is a study on Hebrews 2:5-9.
