Jerry Hey is a Grammy Award-winning arranger, composer, and trumpeter with an incredible career that spans decades. His work as an arranger has brought him into close collaboration with legends like Quincy Jones, and he's crafted arrangements for some of the most iconic artists in music. If you've ever listened to major hits, chances are you've heard his brilliant work. As a trumpet player, Jerry's journey began with the group Sea Wind in Hawaii and later led him to become a top player in the Hollywood studios. His life is full of remarkable experiences and unforgettable stories, and I had the privilege of sitting down with him to hear all about it.In Part 1, we kick things off by diving into how Jerry approaches the art of arranging, using three classic songs as examples: "In the Stone" by Earth, Wind & Fire, "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" by Michael Jackson, and "Rosanna" by Toto. Jerry takes us step-by-step through the magic behind these arrangements. Then, Jerry shares his own unique process for crafting his arrangements—it's an art form that's both meticulous and inspired, and he walks us through his creative approach. We also chat about Jerry's close working relationship with Quincy Jones. I couldn't resist asking Jerry what made Quincy such a remarkable force in music. Jerry's studies at Indiana University were a key part of his musical journey, particularly his time under the mentorship of the legendary Bill Adam. It was also at IU that he met Larry Hall, a friend who would remain by his side for life. After leaving IU, Jerry's career took him to Hawaii, where he joined the group Sea Wind, before eventually making his way to Los Angeles, where he became a sought-after player in the studios. To wrap up this section, Jerry shares an unforgettable story from his time recording with the incredible Al Jarreau. Picture this: four intense days of recording from 11:00 PM to 6:00 AM, followed by more studio sessions during the day—surviving on just 13 hours of sleep in four days. It's a wild story, and you don't want to miss it.[Part 2, Subscriber Content] Throughout his career, Jerry has had the privilege of playing alongside some of the world's greatest musicians. I ask him to reflect on four of his close friends and musical partners: Larry Hall, Gary Grant, Chuck Findley, and Wayne Bergeron, each of whom has had a significant impact on his life and career. We also explore the differences between recording in New York City versus Los Angeles, especially when it comes to the use of headphones in the studio—a fascinating detail that highlights the unique studio culture in each city. Jerry is also a huge admirer of Sergei Nakariakov, and he shares a hWould you like more inspirational stories, suggestions, insights, and a place to continue the conversations with other listeners? Join Amy and Mark as they break down this chilling case: Was payback the motive for the murder of a detective's 7-year-old son? On January 12, 1984, young Gary Grant Jr. enjoyed a rare midweek holiday in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He lived with his mother, May, after his parents’ separation. That morning, Gary mentioned having a secret appointment later in the day, but when he failed to return home by 4:00 PM, his mother grew worried. Despite his father’s frantic search, Gary’s body was discovered two days later in a vacant lot, just two blocks from home. He had been beaten to death with a heavy pipe, likely the murder weapon, found nearby. The initial investigation focused on Carl Mason, nicknamed “Boo,” a 12-year-old with a low IQ who was close friends with Gary. After hours of questioning, Boo signed a confession, though he continued to insist on his innocence. Despite his confession being ruled inadmissible and Boo being cleared of charges, no other suspect was ever identified. Two years later, the case took a sinister turn when a cryptic message appeared on the side of an Atlantic City patrol car: “Gary Grant's dead. I am living. Another will die on January 12th if all goes right.” This message, found just days before the second anniversary of Gary’s murder, suggested a connection to the crime. Weeks later, another chilling message was scratched into a sidewalk: “Gary Grant Jr. lives. I still killed him. Son of a pig officer. Payback is a M.F.” These messages led to speculation that Gary's murder was an act of retribution for an arrest made by his father, but the case remains unsolved. Gary’s family continues to hope for justice, longing for the day when the person responsible will be brought to account. Join Amy and Mark as they delve deeper into this haunting case, exploring the theories and uncovering the details that still leave so many questions unanswered. A brief catch up of our story in case you want to jump in laterSpoilers for Cornfield CryptidsPreviously in Cornfield Cryptids, we picked up after the murder of Roger Clean 29 years later when the Kinder Center Heroes had largely retired and a new generation of heroes was getting ready to make their way in the world. Alice, Thomas, Cheats, and Kayl tracked down a serial burglar only to find that it was a man named Gary Grant who had been turned into a Missouri Monster by some malevolent force. Rescuing him and giving him a place to stay with Alice's mentor, White Rabbit, the gang all went to the neighborhood cookout put on by Kayl's dad, Kyle Redni. Fights were had, noses were kissed, and the gang eventually all got back together to watch some movies and bond. Not all was well however, Alice got home and realized her dads had been kidnapped! Calling her friends over, the young heroes headed to Spriggan Labs where Alice realized her dad, Dusty Starr, was none other than the thought dead hero, Smiles Per Hour. The teens teamed up with Alice's other dad, Radford Starr, to fight off security and find Dusty. With quick thinking and back up from the adults, they were able to save Dusty's life. Though as our heroes are about to learn, they may have survived this crisis but that nightmare has just begun…

Welcome to Episode #112 of "The Other Side of the Bell", a podcast brought to you by Bob Reeves Brass. In this episode, John talks with Wayne Bergeron and Jeff Bunnell about their recently released album called "Homage" by the Los Angeles Trumpet Ensemble. We hope you'll enjoy their conversation as well as the album. Join us at Dillon Music, November 9-11 for valve alignments and mouthpiece consultations. Email sales@dillonmusic to schedule an appointment! About the Los Angeles Trumpet Ensemble Album "Homage" The recording scene in Los Angeles has a long history of great and highly versatile trumpet playing. For the most part, though, these trumpet players rarely get a chance to be featured. In 1957, Tutti Camarata arranged and produced a record called Tutti's Trumpets that featured some of the top session trumpet players in Los Angeles at that time. That was over 60 years ago. Wayne Bergeron and Jeff Bunnell started talking about doing another recording that would feature some of the current session trumpet players here in Los Angeles. Wayne suggested recording a trumpet ensemble CD to Jeff and they loved the idea and thought a choir of trumpets would work well. With that, the Los Angeles Trumpet Ensemble came into being. In choosing the music Jeff arranged for this CD, he wanted to pay tribute to some of the film composers who are part of the Los Angeles recording scene (and who write so well for the trumpet), and also pay tribute to some of the great trumpet players of the past and present. Jerry Hey graciously wrote the arrangment for the last track, the iconic Al Jarreau tune "Roof Garden". Los Angeles Trumpet Ensemble Members Jeff Bunnell Wayne Bergeron Jon Lewis Dan Fornero Marissa Benedict Dan Rosenboom Rob Schaer Larry Hall Dan Savant About Wayne Bergeron Wayne Bergeron is enjoying a career as one of the most sought-after musicians in the world. Studio sessions, film dates, international touring, jazz concerts, guest appearances, and clinics keep him busy not only in his hometown of Los Angeles but worldwide. Born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1958, Bergeron came to California at age one. He originally started on French horn but switched to trumpet in seventh grade where he found a natural upper register ability. Bergeron credits his junior high and high school teachers, Ron Savitt and Bob Smith, for molding his talent into practical working skills. Bergeron first caught the ear of many when he landed the lead trumpet chair with Maynard Ferguson's band in 1986. Bergeron can be heard on Maynard's recordings of Body and Soul, Big Bop Nouveau, Brass Attitude, and The One and Only Maynard Ferguson. Bergeron demonstrates daily why Maynard remarked, “Wayne is the most musical lead trumpet player I've had on my band.” As a sideman, Bergeron's list of recording credits reads like a “who's who” in contemporary jazz and pop, running the stylistic gamut from Ray Charles to Green Day. Other names include Katy Perry, Beyoncé, Barbra Streisand, Michael Buble, Indina Menzel, Leslie Oden Jr., Herb Alpert, The Jonas Brothers, Burt Bacharach, The Dirty Loops, Seth MacFarlane, Natalie Cole, Celine Dion, Seal, Diana Krall, Tito Puente, Christina Aguilera, Dianne Reeves, Michael Bolton, Earth Wind & Fire, The Pussy Cat Dolls, My Chemical Romance, The Mars Volta, Chicago, Rosemary Cloony, Diane Schuur, Barry Manilow, Lee Ann Womack, Lou Rawls, Eric Marienthal, Kenny G., and David Benoit. Bergeron has worked on over 500 TV & motion picture soundtracks. A partial list of film credits includes Red Notice, Turning Red, Soul, Bob's Burgers, Ford vs. Ferrari, Toy Story 4, Frozen 1 & 2, The Lion King (2019), The Secret Life of Pets, Wreck it Ralph 2, Crazy Rich Asians, Sing 1&2, Moana, Frozen 1 & 2, Get On Up, Toy Story 3, Monsters University, High School Musical 3, Get Smart, Superman Returns, The Simpson's Movie, Dreamgirls, Hairspray, Mission Impossible 3, Ice Age 2, Spiderman 1 & 2, Team America and South Park. After being behind the scene for so many years, Bergeron stepped out on his own with his first solo effort, You Call This a Living? This debut project earned him a Grammy nomination in 2004 for Best Large Jazz Ensemble, as well as rave reviews from fans and press worldwide. Bergeron's second CD, Plays Well With Others, released on the Concord Jazz label in 2007, was met with the same acclaim. Bergeron's most current (and personal favorite) CD, Full Circle, was released in January of 2016. Bergeron performs various events for the Hollywood Bowl summer season. He has done guest appearances with the L.A. Philharmonic, The New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, Dallas Symphony, Taiwan Symphony, and Tokyo Philharmonic. Bergeron is a National Artist for the Yamaha Corporation of America and is co-designer of the YTR-8335LA trumpet and YFH-8315G Flugelhorn. Bergeron also designed a series of trumpet mouthpieces with Gary Radtke of GR Technologies that are available through Bergeron's website. Bergeron was mentored by legends Uan Rasey, Bobby Shew, Warren Luening, Gary Grant, Rick Baptist, and George Graham. Bergeron hopes to inspire a new generation of young players and enjoys his work as a clinician and educator. “Nothing makes me feel more accomplished than hearing a young musician say that I inspired them or had a positive influence on their life. For me, that's the real payday.” Bergeron is currently on faculty at California State University Northridge. Perhaps Grammy winning composer and bandleader, Gordon Goodwin said it best, “Wayne is a once in a lifetime lead trumpet player.” About Jeff Bunnell Trumpeter Jeff Bunnell has enjoyed a successful career in many musically diverse settings. A great giggle from the get go, the final episode of series one joins the non-geniuses back to where it all started, as they revisit Gary Grant and his bees. Things are very different in the height of the honey making season. The bees are active, and their numbers have grown. Dressed in fabulous, all in one white numbers for protection, the pair finally get close to these hard working little honey makers. Gary - as always - is on great form and shows Rodney and Tanya around his ever-growing bee estate portfolio. He now has a couple of new hives, and a bee hotel he created from an old wooden table leg. They get up close and personal, as Gary literally reveals a hive of activity. He also talks the intrepid idiots through his honey collection and bees wax making process. We say intrepid, because one of the hosts is a big wuss when it comes to flying black and yellow insects. Apparently, just the mention of ‘Sting' can make him break out in a sweat. They say “you should never go back,” particularly if you dinned and dashed. But that doesn't apply here, as we learn even more about these fascinating creatures in the company of this hilarious host and his growing bee empire. They said they'd come back and they did, plus they got to play dress up. The second visit was as good as the first, that's for sure. The question is, will there ‘bee' a trilogy? Did you get that? In the very first episode of The Looking For A Third Podcast, the Mensa rejects talk to Gary Grant a long suffering friend of Tanya's about his passion for bee keeping. Gary talks about the how, when, where and why he got into bee keeping, but goes on to talk about the fascinating behaviours, the societal structure and the greater wider world of bee keeping. However, he is unable to do this without several puns, and despite Rodney's best efforts to avoid them, once Tanya gets going he's fighting a loosing battle. Gary Grany Jr would have been in school on the average Thursday; however, on Jan 12th, 1984; his school held teacher conferences. This would give him a day to play with his friends and do other activities seven-year-olds typically do. When his mother asked him at breakfast what he planned to do with the day, he told her that he had an appointment that afternoon. While she thought this was just an innocent cover for playing with his girlfriend, when Gary neglected to return home that evening, the seemingly innocent appointment turned into something much more sinister. January 12, 1984. Atlantic City, New Jersey. Seven-year old Gary Grant Jr., the son of a local police detective, leaves his home after telling his mother he is meeting someone for an appointment. Two days later, Gary's body is discovered in a vacant lot after he has been bludgeoned to death with a pipe. A 12-year old friend of Gary's named Carl “Boo” Mason soon confesses to the murder and is charged with the crime, but since Boo has a mental disability and a low IQ, his confession is thrown out and the charges are dropped. Over the next three decades, Gary's father would be taunted by cryptic graffiti and also uncover a recording of an anonymous 911 caller confessing to the crime. Was Boo Mason involved in the murder of Gary Grant Jr. or was someone else responsible? On this week's episode of “The The Path Went Chilly”, we examine the incredibly tragic unsolved murder of a police officer's son.Additional Reading:https://unsolved.com/gallery/gary-grant-jr/http://www.pressofatlanticcity.com/news/audiotape-offers-clue-in-gary-grant-jr-s-atlantic-city/article_284556fe-adc6-11e5-b17b-7b445d3715ea.htmlhttp://www.pressofatlanticcity.com/news/press/atlantic_city/retired-a-c-officer-goes-online-to-find-son-s/article_a8b09dfc-93c8-5552-a1ce-bd7d2d5887f6.htmlhttp://www.foxnews.com/us/2015/12/30/long-forgotten-tape-could-provide-clue-in-1984-cold-case-murder-new-jersey-boy.html

Today, we'll be discussing a case where a young boy went missing and was later found brutally murdered. Authorities had their sights set on the culprit from the very beginning, but with protocol seemingly thrown out the window, their investigation would soon be jeopardized. The case would then become stagnant for several decades, until newly discovered evidence came to light. With renewed vigor, authorities now believe they're inching closer to tracking down this vicious killer.

Sure, Hollywood had its Golden Age. There's a cultural reverence for the Studio System. Greg loves those movies. Turner Classics, anything Black-and-White or MGM. Author and Researcher Donald Jeffries loves those movies, too. But what was happening with the flawed human beings of classic cinema when the set wasn't so hot? The stars, the starlets, the Producers, Directors, Marilyn Monroe, Alfred Hitchcock, Walt Disney, Jimmy Stewart, Gary Grant, John Lennon, Natalie Wood, Judy Garland? Sex, the CIA, murder, DRUGGING, suicides, the mafia, underpaid actors, the casting couch...In his new book, "On Borrowed Fame: Money, Mysteries, and Corruption in the Entertainment World," as well as on this episode, Donald sits down with Greg to shatter the mythology of Golden Era Hollywood and drown out Greg's nostalgia with pure darkness. Here's looking at you, kid. But don't look too hard or Spencer Tracy will punch you out.

The loss of any life is a tragic event. What makes it even more unbearable is when the killer gets away uncaught and the case goes cold. For these families the pain and grief keeps going on and on because there is no closure. But sometimes there is a clue that could possibly solve the mystery of the identity of the killer. In today’s episode, I’ll be talking about two cold cases where the clue is a 911 call. And hopefully, someone out there might be able to help solve the mystery of who made these calls. The Gist of Freedom Preserving American History through Black Literature . . .
The Gist of Freedom and host Natasha Demosthene is pleased to present to you Mr. Gary Grant President of The BLACK FARMERS, AGRICULTURALISTS ASSOCIATION &THE LAND LOSS FUND. Natasha and Mr. Grant will discuss topics such as preserving Black Heir Property. The struggle for the survival of the Black farmer is not over. During the lead up to the now historic settlement of the Black farmers lawsuit, Pigford v. Glickman, Secretary of the USDA, Howard University was working with the Black farmers' leadership to host a "mock trial" that would have exposed the racial discrimination and other atrocities inflicted by the agents of the Farmers Home Administration (FmHA) - now the Farm Service Agency (FSA) – on Black farmers across the nation. The USDA could not afford for these stories to be told for they would show the limit to which this government would and will go to keep a people dependent and not able to raise their standard of living or be able to safely feed themselves. African American people are becoming a landless people in the United States. We are losing the land and wealth that our parents, grandparents and great grandparents worked, fought and died to acquire for us. We owe our ancestral warriors a debt and our youth an opportunity for safe and healthy food. USDA has not helped us and certainly the courts have proven more devastating than we ever dare thought. So, who will help us? WE must help ourselves by insuring that the next generation is ready to maintain and conserve the land. Come and let us reason and plan together, our enemies do.
